Microsoft Message Analyzer is retired software, not a currently supported Microsoft download. Microsoft removed its download packages on November 25, 2019, after the final release in October 2016. An existing installation can still perform limited offline analysis with assets and OPN parsers that were downloaded before retirement, but it cannot obtain new parser or feed content. For new packet-capture work, Wireshark is the practical general-purpose replacement: it is free, open source, actively maintained, and available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and UNIX. It is not a feature-for-feature substitute for every Windows ETW or Message Analyzer workflow, so migration starts by identifying whether you need live packets, ETL data, protocol dissection, conversion, or repeatable automation.
What was Microsoft Message Analyzer?
Microsoft Message Analyzer (MMA) was Microsoft’s packet and protocol analysis application. It captured network traffic and displayed messages in a human-readable form, while also handling broader trace and system-message workflows. The tool was aimed at troubleshooting communications rather than merely showing raw bytes: an investigator could collect data, inspect protocol fields, correlate messages, and examine Windows Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) information in one workspace.

Its scope went beyond a conventional network sniffer. Microsoft documentation described workflows involving live captures, saved collections, network traces, logs, and ETW data. Message Analyzer could also participate in ETL-to-PCAP conversion workflows, which mattered when Windows tracing produced ETL files but another analyzer required PCAP.
That combination made MMA useful in Windows-centric investigations, especially when a problem crossed the boundary between network packets and operating-system tracing. It also created a migration complication: replacing the packet-viewing portion is easier than replacing every parser, provider, and ETW-specific workflow.

Is Microsoft Message Analyzer still available?
No. It is a retired product and is not a current supported download. Microsoft’s retirement notice says that Message Analyzer’s download packages were removed from Microsoft.com sites on November 25, 2019. The notice also records that the last release was published in October 2016, that the product was no longer under active development, and that no Microsoft replacement was in development at the time of retirement.
| Milestone | What it means |
|---|---|
| October 2016 | Last Message Analyzer release. |
| November 25, 2019 | Microsoft retired the product and removed its download packages. |
| Today | No supported public installer, parser-feed service, or Microsoft-developed successor is provided. |
Search results may still point to old installers, mirrors, or forum attachments. Those files are not a current Microsoft distribution channel, and their provenance, integrity, and compatibility cannot be assumed. Treat any archived copy as legacy software for a controlled, offline environment—not as a supported way to begin a new deployment.
What could Message Analyzer do?
Capture and inspect live traffic
MMA could capture network data and present the resulting messages in structured, readable views. Analysts could move from a conversation or message to protocol details instead of manually decoding every frame. The exact capture sources available depended on the Windows environment and installed components, so an old configuration should be documented before it is retired.
Load saved collections and traces
The application could open previously collected data, including trace collections and system messages. That allowed an investigation to be performed after the capture window had closed, which is important when a production incident cannot be reproduced interactively.
Work with ETW and Windows tracing
Message Analyzer documentation and Microsoft’s retirement notice place ETW data inside its broader analysis workflow. ETW files can contain operating-system and application events that are not equivalent to ordinary Ethernet packets. An ETW investigation therefore cannot always be replaced by opening a converted PCAP in a packet analyzer; the event providers and context may be the part that matters.
Use OPN parsers and feeds
MMA used OPN parser assets to decode supported message types. Before retirement, the application could obtain parser and feed content through Microsoft’s service. That dependency is now a hard boundary: previously downloaded assets may remain usable, but new OPN parser downloads are unavailable.

What happens if Message Analyzer is already installed?
An existing installation may continue to parse ETW traces and use OPN parsers that were downloaded before Microsoft shut down the public services. This is a limited offline capability, not a restoration of product support.
- Keep the installation isolated from production systems when possible, because it is no longer receiving fixes or parser updates.
- Preserve the original trace files and any local parser or configuration assets before changing the machine.
- Expect the application to display a feed-service error: its back-end asset service is no longer available.
- Do not plan on downloading a missing parser later; Microsoft no longer provides the public OPN download path.
- Record the Windows version, MMA build, parser set, and capture source used for any result that must be reproduced.
If an old installation opens a trace successfully, export the portions of the analysis that your team needs and document the workflow. A successful offline parse does not indicate that the product will install or operate reliably on a current Windows release.
What replaced Microsoft Message Analyzer?
Microsoft did not release a direct successor. For general packet capture and protocol inspection, Wireshark is the strongest maintained replacement path. It is a free, open-source network protocol analyzer with interactive capture and browsing, deep inspection for hundreds of protocols, current downloads, documentation, and support information for Windows, macOS, Linux, and UNIX.
Wireshark should be treated as a replacement workflow, not a promise of one-for-one compatibility. It handles packet-oriented analysis extremely well, but Windows-specific ETW providers, MMA-only parser assets, and some collection formats require a separate plan.

How should you evaluate a replacement?
Choose based on the evidence your investigation produces, not on the product name. A packet analyzer, an ETW viewer, and a file-conversion utility solve different parts of the old workflow.
- Capture sources: Identify the interfaces, virtual adapters, remote sources, or trace providers you must collect from.
- Input formats: List the files you already have—PCAP, PCAPNG, ETL, logs, or proprietary collections—and confirm that the candidate can open them directly or through a documented conversion step.
- Filtering: Separate capture filters, which limit what is collected, from display filters, which narrow an existing capture. Your replacement should support the kind of filtering your investigations require.
- Protocol dissection: Check whether the protocols you use are decoded and how frequently dissectors are updated.
- Operating-system coverage: Confirm support for the machines on which you capture and analyze data. Wireshark publishes support information for Windows, macOS, Linux, and UNIX.
- Exports and automation: Determine which formats, command-line utilities, scripting interfaces, and integrations are needed for repeatable investigations.
- ETW preservation: If your conclusions depend on Windows provider events rather than packets, test an ETW-focused workflow separately instead of assuming a PCAP viewer will retain that context.
- Usability: One-off troubleshooting may favor an interactive desktop tool, while recurring incident response may require documented command-line or scripted steps.
How do you move a Message Analyzer workflow to Wireshark?
The safest migration is staged. Keep the original evidence, convert only when necessary, and validate that the converted file still answers the investigative question.

- Inventory the old workflow. Write down whether each job used live packets, saved packet captures, ETL files, ETW providers, OPN parsers, log correlation, or a combination. Record the filters and exports that investigators actually used.
- Classify the evidence. PCAP and PCAPNG are packet-capture inputs. ETL can contain packet data, ETW events, or both. Do not assume that an ETL file is interchangeable with a PCAP simply because both can be called a “trace.”
- Preserve originals. Store the untouched ETL or capture files and keep the old MMA installation available for any offline parser that still works. Perform conversion on a copy.
- Convert packet ETL when appropriate. Microsoft identifies the open-source
etl2pcapngtool as an option for converting ETL-format packet captures to PCAP. Use it for the packet portion of an ETL investigation; it is not a general ETW-to-MMA replacement. - Open the resulting capture in Wireshark. Confirm that the file loads, that timestamps and interfaces make sense, and that the protocols you need are dissected rather than shown only as raw data.
- Recreate filters deliberately. Re-enter the old investigation logic as Wireshark capture or display filters, testing each condition against a known sample. Keep a written mapping so another analyst can repeat the result.
- Compare conclusions. Where the old installation still works, compare a small set of messages or conversations between MMA and Wireshark. Differences may come from parser coverage, timestamps, encapsulation, or conversion—not necessarily from an error in the capture.
- Document the new export. Record the Wireshark version, input format, filters, conversion tool, and any files generated. This turns a one-time workaround into a supportable procedure.
Can you open old ETL traces without Message Analyzer?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on what the ETL contains. Microsoft specifically identifies etl2pcapng for converting ETL-format packet captures to PCAP, after which Wireshark can provide interactive packet analysis. That path does not preserve every ETW event or recreate MMA’s OPN parser environment.
For a packet-focused ETL, conversion is usually the practical route. For an ETL whose value lies in provider metadata, system events, or application tracing, retain the original file and identify an ETW-capable analysis workflow. If the only copy can be opened by an old MMA installation, use that installation offline to export the findings and preserve the original trace rather than repeatedly modifying it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do you capture and analyze Windows traffic now?
For a new packet investigation, install a current Wireshark build from its official distribution channel, select the capture source available on the Windows machine, collect only the traffic needed for the incident, and analyze the saved capture with display filters. Capture permissions and the available interface determine what can actually be collected, so a missing interface or empty capture is usually an environment problem rather than a display-filter problem.
Plan before pressing Capture
- Define the hosts, time window, protocol, and symptom you are investigating.
- Choose the physical or virtual interface that can see that traffic.
- Decide whether you need a short live capture or a saved file for later review.
- Note whether encryption, encapsulation, or a remote endpoint limits what the analyzer can decode.
Validate the result
After stopping the capture, check that packets have plausible timestamps, expected endpoints, and the protocol layers relevant to the question. Save the capture before experimenting with filters. A filter changes what you view; it does not repair traffic that was never captured.
What are the common migration failures?
“The old installer is missing.”
This is expected after Microsoft removed the download packages. Do not build a production process around an unverified mirror. Use an existing, controlled installation only for legacy recovery, then move new captures to a maintained tool.
“Message Analyzer shows a feed-service error.”
The error reflects the retired back-end asset service. Offline parsers that were already downloaded may still work, but the application cannot fetch new feed or OPN content.

“The converted file is smaller or shows fewer fields.”
Conversion targets packet data. ETW events, provider metadata, or parser-specific interpretations may not survive as packet fields. Compare the converted capture with the original ETL and preserve both.
“Wireshark opens the file but does not decode the protocol.”
Check whether the traffic is actually present, whether encapsulation is expected, and whether the required dissector supports that protocol. A successful file open only proves that the container is readable; it does not guarantee complete protocol interpretation.
“The capture interface is unavailable.”
Review Windows capture permissions, interface state, and the capture components installed with the current analyzer. If the source is an ETW provider rather than a network interface, select an ETW-oriented collection method instead of trying to force a packet capture.

Practical Packet Analysis, 3rd Edition by Chris Sanders is a relevant print learning resource. The publisher describes coverage of Wireshark capture and display filters, packet-level troubleshooting, traffic visualization, and command-line analyzers. Check the live listing, edition, and marketplace before purchasing because availability can change.
Use the book to learn packet-analysis concepts, then pair it with current Wireshark documentation for interface support, installation details, and release-specific behavior. That combination is more durable than trying to preserve every retired MMA screen or parser.
What is the practical verdict?
Keep Message Analyzer only as a legacy reader for installations and parser assets you already possess. Do not treat it as downloadable, supported software or as a foundation for new Windows deployments. For packet capture and protocol inspection, standardize on a maintained analyzer such as Wireshark; for ETL, decide first whether the file contains packet data that can be converted or ETW information that needs a different tool.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still download an official Message Analyzer installer from Microsoft?
No. Microsoft removed the public download packages on November 25, 2019. An installer found elsewhere should be treated as an archive whose authenticity and compatibility require independent verification, not as a current Microsoft release.
Will Message Analyzer work on Windows 11?
There is no current Microsoft support statement that guarantees operation on Windows 11 or other current releases. A legacy installation may run in a controlled environment, but test it without relying on it for new captures or incident response.
Recommended Free Tools
Are ETL and PCAP the same file format?
No. PCAP stores packet captures, while ETL is a Windows tracing container that can include packet data, ETW events, or both. Converting packet ETL to PCAP can help with Wireshark analysis, but it may omit non-packet tracing context.
Does Wireshark replace every Message Analyzer feature?
No. Wireshark is a strong replacement for general packet capture and protocol inspection, but it does not promise the same ETW-provider workflow or legacy OPN parser behavior. Validate each Windows-specific workflow separately before retiring MMA.
What should I preserve before retiring an old MMA workstation?
Keep the original ETL and capture files, the MMA build information, locally stored parser assets, filter definitions, and exported findings. Preserving those inputs lets another analyst distinguish a conversion limitation from a change in the evidence.
