Workspaces, projects, and investigations
Organizations organize work in workspaces and projects. An investigation is a persistent, goal-driven activity rather than a one-turn conversation. The Discovery Engine keeps the investigation moving across literature searches, planning, tool execution, analysis, and review, while retaining the context needed for later steps.
Agents choose tools and methods
Researchers can define an agent in natural language, such as a molecular-properties simulation specialist or a literature-review specialist. Copilot then selects appropriate agents, models, tools, and knowledge sources and assembles a workflow. Teams can combine several specialists instead of asking one general model to perform every task.
Bookshelf turns documents into a knowledge graph
The Bookshelf knowledge base ingests documents such as PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, and technical reports. It converts their contents into structured, queryable relationships. A proposed protocol still needs a qualified scientist to check feasibility, safety, controls, sample handling, and statistical power. Can Microsoft Discovery design experiments or run simulations?
Yes. Discovery can draft an experiment with controls and validation steps, select and invoke simulation tools, and send workloads to HPC resources. The human team remains responsible for approving the design, setting acceptance criteria, interpreting uncertainty, and validating results experimentally.
What Microsoft’s demonstrations show
Microsoft has reported several illustrative outcomes. In 2025, it said a coolant prototype was found in about 200 hours, compared with a conventional process that could take months or years. In a 2024 collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Microsoft said the system screened more than 32 million battery-material candidates. Microsoft also reported that its managed Accelerated DFT service achieved a 20-fold average speed increase over PySCF.
Other reported examples include a PNNL candidate formulation using 70% less lithium than a conventional comparable formulation and a 2026 Microsoft Research report in which compound prioritization for pancreatic-cancer cell-state experiments took one weekend before wet-lab validation. These are vendor-reported demonstrations under particular project conditions, not universal speed, quality, or cost guarantees.

The app is therefore useful for learning the workflow, testing an agent, or exploring public and local material on one machine. It is not a substitute for the cloud service when a project requires shared access, private enterprise sources, large clusters, formal audit trails, or regulated-environment controls.
Can I use Microsoft Discovery without Azure?
You cannot use the enterprise Microsoft Discovery service without an Azure subscription and associated cloud resources. Azure supplies the identity, storage, networking, models, and CPU/GPU capacity that the governed service orchestrates.
You can use the local Discovery app without provisioning Azure resources. You still need a GitHub Copilot account, a supported installer, a compatible computer, and sufficient Copilot credits. Because the app uses device compute and local or public sources, its scale and collaboration features are narrower than the cloud service.
Is Microsoft Discovery safe for scientific research?

Microsoft prohibits using the system for weapons development, harmful applications, law violations, or bypassing safety controls. - HPC behavior: Does scheduling and scaling reduce time without making results harder to inspect?
- Human oversight: Can experts pause, edit, reject, or rerun a step before it affects downstream work?

Run the same benchmark cases repeatedly, include deliberately difficult or sparsely documented topics, and measure error recovery as well as successful runs. A faster answer that cannot be audited or reproduced is not necessarily a better scientific result.
