Most Microsoft Teams sign-in failures can be narrowed down quickly if you first record the exact status code, then check identity, network access, organization policy, and the Teams client in that order. A code such as 0xCAA90018 points to credentials, while 0xCAA82EE7 points toward DNS or name resolution. Start by saving the code and any correlation ID, check Microsoft service health, and then follow the branch that matches your symptom. Users can usually restore access by completing the required account or multifactor prompts, connecting to a required VPN, updating Teams, or clearing a client cache. Persistent policy or tenant failures require an administrator to inspect Microsoft Entra sign-in logs and Conditional Access results.
Why am I having trouble signing in to Microsoft Teams?
Teams sign-in problems usually belong to one of five areas: account credentials or multifactor authentication, a required network or VPN, DNS/proxy/firewall connectivity, an organizational policy such as Conditional Access, or a damaged local client state. Whether one person or many people are affected is an important clue. A single-user failure is often account, device, browser, or cache specific; simultaneous failures across users may indicate a tenant policy issue or a Microsoft service incident.

Do not begin by repeatedly entering your password or reinstalling Teams. Capture the error first, because the status code at the bottom-left of the sign-in window gives support staff a much narrower starting point.
What should I record from the Teams sign-in screen?
Write down the complete status code, the displayed message, the time of the failure, the account being used, and any correlation ID or additional details. Take a screenshot if permitted by your organization. These details let an administrator match your report to a failed Microsoft Entra sign-in rather than guessing from a general “can’t sign in” description.

| Status code | What it generally indicates | First check |
|---|---|---|
0xCAA20003 |
Authorization problem related to the device or request. | Verify that the computer’s date, time, time zone, and automatic time synchronization are correct. |
0xCAA20004 |
The request needs approval from a resource owner or authorization server. | Ask an administrator to review Microsoft Entra and Conditional Access policy decisions. |
0xCAA70004 |
A server or proxy could not be found. | Check proxy configuration and any HTTPS-inspection or traffic-filtering software. |
0xCAA70007 |
The connection was interrupted while content was downloading. | Check the internet connection, firewall rules, and applications that may be interrupting traffic. |
0xCAA82EE2 |
The request timed out. | Investigate internet reliability, VPN routing, firewall controls, and proxy timeouts. |
0xCAA82EE7 |
The server name could not be resolved. | Investigate DNS configuration and whether the network can reach Microsoft 365 services. |
0xCAA90018 |
The credentials supplied are not correct. | Retry with the organization’s Microsoft 365 work or school account, not a personal account. |
The code is a diagnostic lead, not a guarantee that only one component is at fault. For example, a timeout can result from a VPN or firewall even when the password is valid. Include the code exactly as displayed when you contact IT.
How do I restore access to Teams as a user?
Follow these steps in order. Stop when access returns, but keep the recorded code in case the problem comes back.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Use the sign-in banner. Select the banner in Teams, enter the work or school account, and complete multifactor authentication or any other prompt. After successful authentication, the banner should disappear and Teams should become usable normally.
- Reopen the sign-in window if it is missing. Quit Teams completely, start it again, and wait for the account prompt. A hidden or stalled authentication window can make the app appear to be in a login loop.
- Connect to the required organization network first. If your employer requires a VPN or a particular network, connect before launching Teams. Avoid changing networks while Teams is open; switching between office Wi-Fi, home Wi-Fi, a hotspot, and a VPN can interrupt the authentication session.
- Complete every policy prompt. A request for a new verification method, a password change, device registration, or a compliance action is part of the sign-in flow. Do not dismiss the prompt and continue retrying the old session.
- Check the account type. Use the Microsoft 365 work or school identity assigned by your organization. A personal Microsoft account or an account from another tenant can produce a credential error even when its password is correct.
- Update Teams. Install the current update offered by your organization or the Teams client. Updating is the first client repair step; do it before deleting local data or reinstalling.
Microsoft documents several reasons a fresh authentication can be required: a network that must be present, detected sign-in risk, a forced password change after a breach, or device requirements. Those triggers are controlled by the organization’s identity and security configuration, so a user may need an administrator even when the local app is functioning.
How can I tell whether Teams is down or the problem is local?
Check Microsoft’s service-health page before spending time on local repairs. Business and enterprise tenants should also check the Microsoft 365 admin center. Service health is live and time-sensitive: a page that reports all products operational at one moment does not rule out a later incident or a regional, tenant-specific problem.
| What you observe | Most likely area | Who should act next |
|---|---|---|
| Only one user fails; colleagues can sign in | Credentials, MFA, device compliance, browser state, or local Teams data | The user, then the help desk if the account or policy is involved |
| Several users in one organization fail | Tenant Conditional Access, identity service configuration, required network, or a tenant incident | Microsoft 365 or identity administrator |
| Users in many organizations fail at once | Microsoft service incident | Monitor the service-health page and follow Microsoft’s incident updates |
| Desktop fails but web works | Desktop update, local cache, embedded authentication, or endpoint security software | The user can test client repair; IT should check managed-device controls |
| Web and desktop both fail on the same network | DNS, proxy, firewall, VPN, credentials, or policy | Network or identity administrator |
A healthy service page does not prove that your organization’s tenant, proxy, or identity policy is healthy. Treat it as a fast way to rule out a broad Microsoft incident, then continue with account, network, and policy checks.

How do I check credentials, MFA, Conditional Access, and device compliance?
Identity failures need to be separated from connectivity failures. A password error is different from a successful password followed by a policy denial.

Credentials and account selection
For 0xCAA90018, re-enter the organization’s work or school account and verify that the username belongs to the correct tenant. If the password was recently changed, sign out of other Microsoft 365 sessions where possible and use the new password consistently. Continued failure after a verified password should be handed to IT rather than solved by repeated retries.
Multifactor authentication and risk prompts
Approve the MFA request only when it matches your attempted sign-in. If the prompt never arrives, check the registered authentication method and whether the required VPN or network is connected. Microsoft can require reauthentication after detecting sign-in risk or after a security event, so an account that worked yesterday may legitimately request a new verification today.
Conditional Access and device requirements
0xCAA20004 commonly requires administrator review. Conditional Access may require a compliant or managed device, a trusted location, a particular network, or stronger authentication. The user cannot override a policy denial from the Teams window; an administrator must determine which rule matched and what remediation is allowed.
Device compliance can also explain why the password and MFA succeed but Teams still refuses access. The organization may require enrollment, an up-to-date operating system, encryption, screen lock, or another management condition. Ask the administrator which requirement failed instead of removing management controls from the device.

How do I troubleshoot DNS, VPN, proxy, and firewall errors?
Network errors are more likely when the code points to name resolution, a timeout, a missing proxy server, or an interrupted download. Test from the same device and network where Teams fails; a successful test from a different connection does not prove that the original path is permitted.
- Required VPN: Connect before opening Teams and keep the tunnel active throughout sign-in. If Teams works off VPN but not on it, send the result and status code to the network team.
- DNS: A
0xCAA82EE7failure indicates that a server name could not be resolved. Check whether other Microsoft 365 services resolve on the same network and whether an internal DNS server is returning incomplete or blocked results. - Timeouts: A
0xCAA82EE2failure can result from packet loss, restrictive egress rules, VPN routing, or a proxy that takes too long to respond. Compare a stable wired or trusted connection with the failing path if your policy permits. - Proxy and HTTPS inspection: A
0xCAA70004failure directs attention to proxy settings and HTTPS-inspection software. Confirm that the proxy address, authentication, and certificate inspection policy are correct for Microsoft 365 traffic. - Interrupted downloads: A
0xCAA70007failure can occur when a firewall, security product, or another application terminates the connection. Do not disable security software broadly; ask the administrator to review its event log and approved exceptions.
Changing networks while the sign-in window is open can invalidate a session. Close Teams, establish the intended connection, and start a fresh sign-in attempt before concluding that the account is blocked.
How do I fix a Teams desktop client that is stuck in a login loop?
If Teams works in a browser or for another user on the same computer, the desktop client’s local state is a reasonable suspect. Update first, then clear the local Teams cache and restart the app. Cache cleanup is a client repair, not an account reset.
Windows cache cleanup
- Quit Teams completely, including its notification-area process.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%appdata%MicrosoftTeamsin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that Teams folder, or move them to a temporary backup folder if your organization requires preservation.
- Start Teams again and sign in after the client recreates its local files.
macOS cache cleanup
- Quit Teams completely.
- In Finder, choose Go to Folder and enter
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams. - Delete the contents of that folder, then reopen Teams.
- Sign in again and check whether the loop has stopped.
Removing the cache deletes local web-client cache, icons, thumbnails, local message history, display images, and add-ons stored by the client. It does not delete the Teams service, your organization’s account, or server-side conversations. If your organization has retention or legal-hold requirements, follow its IT instructions before moving or deleting local files.

Reinstalling is useful for a damaged client; it will not fix a denied Conditional Access policy, an unavailable DNS service, or an organization-wide outage.

What if only the Teams web client fails?
Test another supported browser and a private or incognito window. A private window helps distinguish a stale browser session from an account or network failure, while another browser can reveal an extension conflict.
- Temporarily test with browser extensions and ad blockers disabled, subject to your organization’s security rules.
- Sign out of unrelated Microsoft accounts in the test window so the wrong tenant is not selected automatically.
- If the private window works but the normal window does not, clear the browser’s site data for the Microsoft sign-in and Teams sites or ask IT for the approved browser reset procedure.
- If every browser fails with the same code, return to the identity and network branches rather than repeatedly reinstalling the desktop app.
How can an administrator investigate a persistent Teams sign-in failure?
An administrator should correlate the user’s report with Microsoft Entra sign-in logs. Filter for failed sign-ins around the exact failure time and inspect the user, application, error code, failure reason, and additional details. The log entry can show whether the request reached the identity service and which policy or authentication step rejected it.
Record the failed sign-in’s correlation ID and sign-in error code. Review Conditional Access results, authentication requirements, risk detections, device-compliance status, and the network or location condition that matched. If the log shows no corresponding attempt, focus on DNS, proxy, firewall, VPN, or a local client problem because the request may not have reached Entra.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a Microsoft support request, include the exact Teams status code, the correlation ID, Entra error code, failure reason, additional details, username or user ID, approximate time in UTC, affected client (desktop or web), and relevant debug logs. Redact passwords, MFA codes, tokens, and other secrets before sharing any diagnostic file.
When should I stop troubleshooting and escalate?
Escalate immediately when a policy denial, account lock, forced password change, device-compliance requirement, or MFA registration problem is indicated. Escalate network findings when the required VPN, proxy, DNS, firewall, or HTTPS inspection is managed by someone else. If multiple users are affected, have an administrator check tenant service health and Entra logs before asking every user to repair their client.

A useful handoff contains the status code, full message, correlation ID, account or user ID, date and time, device and operating system, desktop or web client, network or VPN used, whether another user is affected, and the steps already tried. This prevents support from repeating generic cache and password advice when the evidence points to a tenant policy or service incident.
What is the fastest diagnostic order for Microsoft Teams sign-in errors?
Use this order to minimize wasted changes:
- Capture the status code, message, correlation ID, and time.
- Check Microsoft service health and, for business tenants, the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Verify the work or school account, password, MFA prompts, date/time, and any required VPN.
- Classify the symptom as one user versus many, and desktop versus web.
- Check DNS, proxy, firewall, HTTPS inspection, and timeout clues from the code.
- Review Conditional Access, sign-in risk, and device compliance with an administrator.
- Update Teams, clear the appropriate local cache, and reinstall only for a client-specific failure.
- Escalate with the complete evidence package and relevant logs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Teams keep asking for my password even though it is correct?
Repeated prompts can mean the account passed password validation but failed a second requirement, such as MFA, device compliance, sign-in-risk remediation, or a required VPN. It can also occur when the client is selecting a different work or school tenant than the one you intended. Record the status code from the prompt and have an administrator compare it with the corresponding Microsoft Entra sign-in.
Can I use Teams in a browser while the desktop app is broken?
Often, yes, if the failure is limited to the desktop client’s update, embedded sign-in state, or cache. Use a private browser window as a clean test, but do not treat browser access as proof that Conditional Access is correct: policies can evaluate browser and desktop sessions differently.
Does clearing the Teams cache remove messages from my organization?
It removes files stored locally by the client, including cached web data and local message history, but it does not erase the Teams service or server-side conversations. Messages may take time to reappear while the client rebuilds its local state after the next sign-in.
What does it mean if Microsoft Entra shows no failed sign-in at all?
The request may not have reached the identity service. That pattern shifts attention to DNS resolution, proxy or firewall blocking, VPN routing, HTTPS inspection, or a local client that never opened the authentication request. Give the network administrator the exact time and status code so traffic logs can be checked.
