Microsoft Word starts through winword.exe, and its command-line startup switches change how that launch behaves. Use /safe to start in Safe Mode, /a to suppress add-ins and global templates, /m to block AutoExec macros, /n or /w to create an isolated Word instance, and file-oriented switches such as /t, /f and /h to open content in a specific way. The complete Microsoft-documented list is below, with syntax distinctions, troubleshooting workflows and the limitations that matter when applying it to Word 2010.
What is a Word command-line startup switch?
A command-line switch is a modifier appended to an executable file. For Word, the executable is winword.exe; the switch follows it after a space. Microsoft documents these options primarily as one-switch startup commands, so treat each launch as a separate test rather than assuming several switches can be combined reliably.

A path or filename containing spaces must be enclosed in double quotation marks. When the executable path itself contains spaces, quote the complete path and put the switch outside the closing quote, as in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficerootOffice16WINWORD.EXE" /a.
How do I run a Word switch?
- Close any Word session relevant to the test, then open the Windows Run dialog with
Windows key + R, or open Command Prompt. - Enter
winword.exefollowed by one switch and its required argument. For an installed executable whose location is not on the system path, use the quoted full path. - Quote every filename, template path or other argument that contains spaces. Keep the switch outside the executable’s closing quotation mark.
- Press Enter and observe whether Word starts, opens the requested content, or exits after performing a registration task.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions specifically use winword /a in the Run dialog. The shorter name works when Windows can resolve the Word executable; the .exe form is explicit and clearer in scripts.

Which switch should I use when Word will not start correctly?
Start with the least invasive diagnostic and move toward options that suppress more startup components. The objective is to determine whether the failure is caused by startup automation, a global template, an add-in or a damaged registration.
Use /safe for a Safe Mode launch
winword.exe /safe starts Word in Safe Mode. Word 2010 support guidance also documents holding the Ctrl key while launching Word as a way to request Safe Mode. A successful Safe Mode launch shows that Word can open with its ordinary startup path reduced, but it does not by itself identify which component caused the failure.
Use /a to isolate add-ins, global templates and settings
/a is Microsoft’s designated troubleshooting switch. It prevents add-ins and global templates, including the Normal template, from loading automatically and locks settings files. If Word behaves differently with /a, compare the normal launch against add-ins, global templates and settings changes one category at a time.
Use /m to test AutoExec macros
/m starts Word without running AutoExec macros. This is useful when the program opens but hangs, displays an unexpected dialog or performs an unwanted action during startup. It does not mean that all macro execution is permanently disabled after Word has opened; it specifically suppresses the AutoExec startup action.
Use /q only to remove the splash screen
/q suppresses the Word splash screen. It changes startup presentation, not the add-ins, templates or macros that Word loads, so it is not a substitute for /safe, /a or /m when diagnosing a crash.

How do I open a template or document from the command line?
Start a new document from a template with /tfilename
Attach the template name directly to /t, with no intervening space: winword.exe /tc:Myfax.dotx. Word creates a new document based on that template rather than using Normal. Quote the entire argument when the template path contains spaces, for example winword.exe /t"C:Shared TemplatesInvoice.dotx".
Open existing files with the spaced /t filename form
With a space after /t, Word opens an existing file. The documented form also permits multiple filenames: winword.exe /t c:MyFile.docx c:MyFile2.docx. Use separate quoted arguments when names contain spaces, such as winword.exe /t "C:ReportsJanuary report.docx" "C:ReportsFebruary report.docx".
Create a new document based on an existing file with /f
/f uses an existing file as the basis for a new document: winword.exe /f "c:DocumentsMyFile.docx". This differs from the spaced /t filename form, which opens the existing file itself.
Open a SharePoint document with /h
The /h argument takes a document URL, for example winword.exe /h http://MySite/Documents/MyFile.docx. Word opens a read-only copy when the document is stored on a SharePoint site; a document checked out to your account opens for editing instead.
How do I control add-ins and macros at startup?
Load one add-in explicitly with /ladd-in
Use /l immediately followed by the add-in path, such as winword.exe /lc:Sales.dll. Because this option loads executable add-in code, verify the file’s origin and maintain the macro and add-in security controls appropriate to your environment.

Run one named macro with /mMacroName
Put the macro name directly after /m: winword.exe /mSalelead. Word runs that specified macro while preventing AutoExec macros. Microsoft warns users to use care with executable files and macro code; do not use this form for an untrusted document or macro project.
What is the difference between /n and /w?
Both switches create a new Word process whose documents do not appear in other instances’ Switch Windows lists. /n starts that instance with no document open, while /w starts it with a blank document already created.
Choose /n when another program or a later command will supply the document. Choose /w when you want an immediately usable blank editing window that remains separate from an existing Word session.
What are /r, /x, /p and /z for?
/r: re-register Word
winword.exe /r re-registers Word in the Windows registry, runs Office Setup, updates the registry and then closes. It is a registration and setup action, not a normal editing launch, so save work and expect Word not to remain open when the command completes.

/x: respond to one DDE request
/x starts Word from the operating-system shell so it responds to one Dynamic Data Exchange request, such as a programmatic print request. It is intended for software or shell integrations rather than routine interactive startup.

/p: transform XML with XSLT
The /p form takes an XSLT file followed by an XML file, as in winword.exe /pc:MyTransform.xsl c:Data.xml. Both arguments are positional; quote either path if it contains spaces.
/ztemplatename: generate Startup and New events
/z behaves like the template form of /t, but it can generate both Startup and New events. Use winword.exe /zMyTemplate.dotx when an event-driven template requires both notifications; the ordinary /t template launch generates only a Startup event.
What command-line mistakes cause failures?
- Putting the switch inside the executable quote: use
"C:Path With SpacesWINWORD.EXE" /a, not a single quoted string that includes the switch. - Adding a space where syntax forbids one:
/tfilename,/ladd-in,/mMacroNameand/ztemplatenamerequire the argument to touch the switch. - Confusing template creation with file opening: the attached
/tfilenameform creates from a template, while the spaced/t filenameform opens an existing file. - Using
/qas a repair option: it hides the splash screen only; use/safe,/aor/mfor startup diagnosis. - Running code from an unknown source:
/lcan load executable add-ins and/mMacroNamecan run macro code. Confirm trust and security settings first. - Assuming every switch is Word-2010-exclusive: Microsoft’s current command-line table is not separately labeled as a Word 2010-only table.
Is this switch list guaranteed to be unchanged across Word versions?
The documented behaviors above come from Microsoft’s Word command-line reference, while a separate Microsoft Support article specifically confirms the Word 2010 Safe Mode context, including the Ctrl-at-launch method. The command-line table itself is not labeled as a Word 2010-only table, so the evidence confirms how to use these documented forms but does not independently prove that every switch remained identical throughout every Word 2010 build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a legacy Word 2010 deployment, test the exact installed build and the intended file type in a non-production session, especially when relying on event generation, DDE integration, XML transformation or executable add-ins.
FAQ
Are Word switch names case-sensitive?
No. Microsoft describes switch names as case-insensitive, so /SAFE and /safe represent the same option. Keeping one consistent style in shortcuts and scripts still makes maintenance easier.

Why does a quoted executable need the switch outside the quotation marks?
Quotation marks tell Windows where a path containing spaces ends. The switch is a separate command argument, so placing it after the closing quote prevents Windows from treating the switch text as part of the executable filename.
Does /r leave Word open after it finishes?
No. The documented behavior is to re-register Word, run Office Setup, update the registry and close. Use it when you specifically need registration or setup processing, not when you simply want a new editing window.
Can I use /h to edit every SharePoint document?
No. The documented default is a read-only copy. Editing occurs when the document is checked out to your account; the switch does not override SharePoint’s checkout state.
