migstore.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The exact wording depends on the Windows version and the program or setup process that called the file.
The 60-second answer
migstore.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the Migration Engine Store. It belongs to Windows Setup, upgrades, recovery, and migration—not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a normal game runtime.
Do not download a random replacement DLL. First identify when the message appears:
- During Windows Update or an upgrade: repair Windows servicing and rerun Setup.
- When Windows starts: check system files, security quarantine, and recent changes.
- When one application starts: inspect that application and determine whether it is incorrectly calling a Windows migration component.
Microsoft’s current Safe OS and Setup Dynamic Update packages continue to include migstore.dll with related migration files such as migcore.dll, mighost.exe, migapp.dll, and migres.dll.[^1]
What is migstore.dll and where should it be?
The file’s public description is “Migration Engine Store.” Its role is strongly associated with the Windows migration engine used by Setup and upgrade processes.
On older Windows installations, it may appear here:

On Windows 10 and Windows 11 upgrade media or temporary setup files, it may instead be found here:
sourcesmigstore.dll
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSources
The path varies by Windows generation and by the stage of Setup. A missing-file message does not always mean that the DLL itself has disappeared. It can also mean that a dependency, Setup file, or temporary migration environment is damaged.
A legitimate copy should normally have a valid Microsoft digital signature. To search for copies, open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem "$env:windir" -Filter migstore.dll -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName,Length
To inspect a specific copy:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:pathtomigstore.dll"
A Microsoft signature is useful evidence, but it is not the only check. A suspicious path, unexpected surrounding files, or repeated antivirus detection still requires investigation.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- Incomplete or corrupted Windows Setup or upgrade files.
- Damage in the Windows component store or protected system files.
- Antivirus quarantine or aggressive cleanup.
- Installation media that does not match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, or upgrade path.
- A third-party program incorrectly attempting to load a Windows migration file.
- A driver, profile, disk, or malware problem exposed during migration.
The context matters more than the wording. A dialog during an upgrade points toward Setup. A dialog naming a game or application requires checking that program, but the generic suggestion to reinstall it does not prove that the program normally owns migstore.dll.
Fix 1: Run Windows Update repair options first
Use this fix when the error appeared during Windows Update, after a failed upgrade, or during normal Windows servicing.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Open Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
- Retry the update or upgrade.
Windows 11 may also provide a repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, applications, and settings when the option is available.[^2]
If Windows Update cannot repair the problem, continue with the servicing commands below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker uses that repaired store to replace damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and retry the operation that produced the error.
A successful result may say that no integrity violations were found, or that corrupt files were repaired. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more after DISM has completed.
If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, use a matching Windows source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The repair source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not point DISM at an unrelated Windows version.
Manually identifying the correct repair source and interpreting repeated SFC and DISM results can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in commands remain the primary repair path.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected Setup file.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the error began.
- Open a detection to see its path and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- It is in a normal Windows Setup or Windows directory.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- The surrounding Windows files and Setup activity are trustworthy.
- A current security scan does not identify a broader infection.
Do not blindly allow the file if Defender detects it again. Run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if malware is plausible. A suspicious copy in an application’s temporary or download folder should not be restored merely because its filename is migstore.dll.[^3]
Fix 4: Retry the upgrade with official matching media
Use this route when the error appears during a feature upgrade or when the existing Setup cache is incomplete.
Download Windows installation media from Microsoft, matching:

After obtaining matching media:
- Start Windows normally.
- Mount the ISO or insert the official installation media.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - Follow the compatibility checks.
- Select Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue the in-place installation.
Do not boot from the media when your goal is an in-place repair. Booting from it can lead to a clean installation instead, which removes applications and may remove personal data.
Windows Setup Dynamic Update can retrieve newer Setup files, drivers, Safe OS files, and related upgrade components. Leave Dynamic Update enabled unless a documented troubleshooting step specifically requires otherwise.[^4]
If the same failure returns, examine the Setup logs before trying another replacement file.
Fix 5: Check the Setup and migration logs
For an upgrade failure, these logs are more useful than repeatedly copying DLLs:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.log
C:WindowsPanthermiglog.xml
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesRollbacksetupact.log
Open the files in Notepad and search for:
migstore
MIG
abort
Also search for the final error code and the approximate time of the failure. Microsoft identifies setupact.log as the most useful general Setup log, while MIG entries point toward the migration engine.[^5]
The log may show that the real failure involves a driver, user profile, unreadable file, permission problem, or another missing dependency. In that situation, repairing only migstore.dll will not resolve the underlying issue.
Fix 6: Update or remove a driver identified by Setup
Use this step only when the Setup logs identify a driver or when the problem began immediately after a driver change.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named in the Setup log.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retry Setup.
If the issue began after an update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart and test again.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean comparing hardware IDs, Windows versions, and several vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show available updates, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional aid and follow the Setup log’s evidence.

Fix 7: Check whether an application is calling it incorrectly
If the message appears only when launching one program, note the exact program name and the folder shown in the error or event log.
A normal game or application should not generally require migstore.dll as its own runtime. If the program’s installer or launcher is damaged, use its official repair, update, or reinstall option. A game launcher’s file verification feature is relevant only when the game actually owns the file.
Do not copy migstore.dll into the application folder or into System32 merely because the dialog suggests reinstalling the program. First determine whether the file belongs to Windows Setup or whether the application is making an incorrect reference.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and OLE DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. It does not repair ordinary Windows Setup libraries.
Running this command against migstore.dll may produce an entry-point or “not self-registerable” error:
regsvr32 migstore.dll
That result does not mean another copy should be downloaded. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or matching installation media instead.
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- It may be from Windows 7, 8.1, 10, or 11 when your system requires another build.
- It may have the wrong x86 or x64 architecture.
- It may be unsigned or falsely presented as Microsoft software.
- It may not include a missing dependency.
- Copying it may damage the Windows Setup environment further.
A manual replacement is supportable only from a matching, trusted Windows image or servicing source. The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft installation media, and Microsoft repair mechanisms.
Architecture and version matching
Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit files. Do not mix files from different Windows generations simply because the filename is identical.
Older metadata references include both x86 and x64 builds, while current Microsoft Safe OS manifests contain newer architecture-specific copies. File size or version alone is not a compatibility test. The copy must match the Windows build, architecture, edition, and Setup phase using it.
When to use System Restore or reinstall Windows
Use System Restore when the failure began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup action, or security change:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, and official installation media all fail, back up important data and consider a Windows reset or clean installation. A clean installation is a last resort because it can remove applications and personal files.
FAQ
Is migstore.dll malware?
No. migstore.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows migration and Setup component. A copy in an unexpected location, without a valid Microsoft signature, or repeatedly detected by antivirus should still be treated as suspicious.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET reinstall it?
There is no established reason to reinstall those runtimes for a migstore.dll error. They are relevant when the error names one of their own files. Repair Windows servicing instead.
Does Windows Features reinstall it?
Usually not. Windows Features manages optional Windows components, while migstore.dll belongs to Setup and migration infrastructure. Enable or repair a Windows feature only when the specific error identifies that feature.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. The correct location depends on Windows generation and Setup phase. Copying an unrelated file can create an architecture or build mismatch and may hide the actual servicing problem.
Why does the message say a program cannot start?
Windows error dialogs use generic loader wording. The named program may be Windows Setup, an installer, or an application that incorrectly requested the file. The timing and Setup logs identify the real source.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if the file is missing but SFC reports no problem?
That can happen when the missing copy belongs to temporary Setup media rather than the active operating system. Check the Setup logs, retry with current official media, and avoid treating a temporary Setup path as a permanent System32 file.
