Allays are peaceful flying helpers that collect dropped items matching an item you give them. Find them in cages at pillager outposts or in jail cells in woodland mansions, assign a target item with the use interaction, and keep them within range while they search. They are not tamed like wolves or cats: the item assignment controls their behavior, and an empty-hand interaction takes that assignment back.

What an Allay does
An Allay is a small, peaceful, flying Minecraft mob built for retrieving loose items. Give it one example of an item, and it follows the player while looking for dropped copies of that item. When it finds matching drops, it carries them back and delivers them to its current target.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe important distinction is that an Allay retrieves items; it does not manufacture, duplicate, or withdraw them from storage. Showing it one iron ingot, for example, makes it look for dropped iron ingots in the area. It will not create additional ingots and cannot open a chest to take items out.
An Allay has one inventory slot for the stack it is carrying, in addition to the item used to assign its target. That limited capacity is why an Allay works best as a helper for loose drops rather than as a general-purpose storage system.

Allays are assigned, not conventionally tamed
Use the item on the Allay to assign its collection target. While it has an assigned item, it follows the player and searches for matching dropped items. Interact with it using an empty hand to take the assignment item back and end that collection task. This is the practical equivalent of resetting its behavior; there is no conventional taming progression to complete.
Where Allays spawn
Allays generate in two structure types:
- Pillager outposts: Look for dark-oak cages near the outpost.
- Woodland mansions: Search the jail cells inside the mansion.
Each applicable cage or jail-cell location has a 50% chance to generate Allays, generally in groups of one to three. A structure can therefore contain no Allays even when you have found the correct room or cage. Search every relevant cage and jail cell instead of assuming that one empty location rules out the structure.

Once you find an Allay, prevent it from wandering while you prepare a route home. Enclose it temporarily, use a lead, or move it directly into a controlled transport area. Allays are vulnerable to ordinary environmental hazards, and an uncontained one can drift away while you are exploring or building.
Assigning an item helps the Allay follow you, but it does not replace physical safety measures. Keep the assigned item available in your hand while traveling so the Allay continues to recognize you as its player target. For a long move, an enclosed path is more dependable than relying on open terrain.
How to make an Allay collect items
- Choose the target item. Hold one example of the item you want retrieved.
- Assign it. Use the item on the Allay. It now searches for dropped copies of that item.
- Create or place loose drops. Matching items must be present as world items in loaded chunks; items sitting in a chest do not qualify.
- Stay close enough. Keep the Allay within its documented following range while it works.
- Allow for delivery time. After each delivery, it waits three seconds before searching again.
- Reset it when finished. Interact with the Allay using an empty hand to reclaim the assignment item.
Operating ranges and timing
The documented maximum following range is 64 blocks from its player. Its item-search range extends up to 32 blocks. These are practical build limits: a farm can produce drops, but an Allay too far from its player or outside the relevant search area will not behave as expected.
After delivering a stack, the Allay has a three-second delay before it searches again. A collection system that produces items continuously may therefore accumulate a small queue of drops even when the Allay is functioning normally.

What counts as a matching item
The Allay looks for dropped items matching the item used for assignment. It does not copy the example item, convert similar materials, or collect arbitrary items simply because they occupy the same area. If you want it to collect a different item, take back its current assignment with an empty hand and give it the new example.
The world items must also be in loaded chunks. Unloaded areas do not provide a working search space, so moving away from a farm can stop collection even when the Allay itself appears to be assigned correctly.
The mobGriefing rule
When /gamerule mobGriefing is set to false, Allays cannot pick up world items. A player can still hand an item to an Allay, but that assignment does not override the rule preventing it from collecting loose items. If an Allay accepts an item yet never retrieves nearby drops, check this gamerule before rebuilding the farm.
Sending deliveries to a note block
By default, an Allay delivers collected items to its player. A note block provides a temporary alternative destination for automated builds.
Recommended Free Tools
If the Allay hears a note block play within 16 blocks while it is delivering, it switches its temporary delivery target to that note block. It searches around the note block and returns items there for 30 seconds. After that focus period, it targets its player again.
A vibration particle indicates that the note block has captured the Allay’s attention. This visual cue is useful when testing a collection station: it confirms that the sound interaction occurred rather than leaving you to guess why the delivery went elsewhere.

Building a note-block collection point
- Place the note block within 16 blocks of the Allay’s delivery path.
- Put a hopper or another collection point beneath or adjacent to the note block, depending on the storage design you are building.
- Play the note block while the Allay is delivering so it becomes the temporary target.
- Keep the relevant item drops and the note block inside loaded chunks.
- Separate neighboring Allay stations so a sound intended for one mob does not redirect another.
Wool placed between the Allay and the note block can block the sound interaction. Use wool when you need to isolate stations or prevent an adjacent note block from capturing a delivery. Keep each station’s sound path deliberate; nearby note blocks can redirect the wrong Allay if their ranges overlap.
Player-following collection versus a note-block station
Both arrangements use the same item-assignment mechanic, but they suit different builds.

| Main interruption risk | The player moves too far away or leaves the working area | Another note block redirects the Allay, or wool blocks the intended sound |
| Best use | Carrying out a mobile cleanup or gathering loose drops while exploring | Routing drops into a fixed farm or sorting installation |
Choose player-following collection when you are moving through a site and want the items returned directly to you. Choose a note-block station when the drops originate in a fixed area and you want them routed toward hoppers or storage. The station still depends on loose world items; the Allay is not a chest inventory manager.
Can an Allay sort items into a chest?
Not directly. An Allay cannot take items from a chest, and its normal delivery target is the player rather than a chest inventory. To use one in a storage build, place the note block so the Allay delivers at a fixed point, then use a hopper or another collection mechanism to move the dropped items into storage.
This arrangement is collection routing, not item filtering by itself. The Allay chooses items according to the example you assigned, while the hopper and the rest of the build handle movement into containers. If several Allays collect different item types, give each one its own controlled delivery area and isolate their note-block sound paths with spacing or wool.
How to duplicate Allays
Duplication uses a jukebox, a music disc, and an amethyst shard. The sequence is:

- Bring an Allay to a jukebox.
- Play a record in the jukebox.
- Wait for the Allay to dance.
- While it is dancing, use an amethyst shard on the Allay.
- The shard is consumed and the Allay splits into two Allays.
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.19.1 release notes added the behavior that Allays dance to a record playing in a jukebox and duplicate when handed an amethyst shard while dancing. Mojang writer Sofia Dankis described the result on June 28, 2022: “The allay will consume the shard and split in two. Voila! You now have two allays!”
Cooldown and resource planning
Duplication has a five-minute cooldown. After a successful duplication, both resulting Allays share that cooldown before another duplication can occur. Amethyst shards are consumed, so repeated expansion requires a supply of shards as well as a jukebox and a record.
The cited release notes document the Java Edition 1.19.1 behavior. Mojang’s June 28, 2022 article recorded the feature as available in Bedrock at publication and coming to Java with 1.19.1. If your edition or version behaves differently, verify the mechanic against that edition’s current release rather than assuming that a Java-specific note applies unchanged.
Transporting and managing Allays safely
- Use a lead or enclosure: An open route gives a flying mob opportunities to wander or encounter hazards.
- Keep the player target in range: The maximum documented following distance is 64 blocks.
- Carry the assignment item: Keeping it in hand makes it easier to maintain the intended follow behavior while relocating the Allay.
- Protect the search area: The 32-block search radius only matters in loaded, accessible working space.
- Control sound: Unexpected note-block sounds can temporarily redirect a delivery.
- Use wool deliberately: Wool between a note block and Allay can prevent an unwanted sound interaction.
For a permanent installation, build a roof, walls, or other containment around the working area and test the route before releasing additional Allays. This is especially important when duplicating several mobs: more Allays mean more possible sound interactions and more chances for one to drift into an unsafe area.

The Allay follows me but collects nothing
- Confirm that matching items are dropped in the world rather than stored in a chest.
- Check that the drops and Allay are in loaded chunks.
- Stay within 64 blocks and make sure the items are within the 32-block search range.
- Check
/gamerule mobGriefing; a value offalseprevents pickup of world items. - Allow for the three-second delay after a delivery before expecting another search.
It delivers to me instead of the hopper
The note block must play within 16 blocks while the Allay is delivering. If it does not hear the note block, it keeps the player as its target. Confirm that the note block is active, that wool is not blocking the sound path, and that the Allay has not already ended its 30-second temporary focus.
The wrong Allay responds to a note block
Nearby Allays can hear the same note block. Separate stations, move note blocks farther apart, or place wool to block sound between unrelated stations. Watch for the vibration particle to identify which Allay captured the note block’s attention.

The Allay will not duplicate
- Make sure a record is actively playing in a jukebox.
- Wait until the Allay is visibly dancing before using the amethyst shard.
- Use an amethyst shard, not another amethyst item.
- Check whether the five-minute duplication cooldown has expired.
- Confirm your edition and version, since the cited Java behavior is specifically documented for Java 1.19.1 and later release documentation.
Practical Allay setups
Mobile cleanup helper
For exploration or a temporary work site, assign the Allay the item you expect to find, drop or expose matching items in loaded terrain, and remain within its follow and search ranges. It will return deliveries to you, making this arrangement useful when you do not need a permanent storage target. Take back the assignment with an empty hand when changing tasks.
Fixed farm collection
For a farm that produces loose drops in one place, build a contained station with the note block inside the Allay’s 16-block trigger range. Pair the delivery point with a hopper and storage, then isolate neighboring stations with spacing or wool. Test one Allay first so you can observe the 30-second note-block focus and confirm that the hopper receives the drops before adding more mobs.
Expanding a collection workforce
Start with one secured Allay, a jukebox, a record, and enough amethyst shards for the number of duplications you plan to perform. Duplicate only after the first collection route works reliably. Each successful duplication creates two Allays that share the five-minute cooldown, so a staged expansion is easier to supervise than releasing many new mobs into an unfinished build.
Edition and version checklist
Most of the collection behavior described here is presented as current Minecraft mechanics, but duplication documentation is edition-specific. Before troubleshooting a discrepancy, record:
- Whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- The exact game version.
- The value of
mobGriefing. - Whether the Allay, item drops, note block, and storage are in loaded chunks.
- Whether the relevant note block is within 16 blocks and unobstructed by wool.
Those details distinguish a genuine version difference from a range, sound, gamerule, or timing problem.
What to remember
Find Allays in pillager-outpost cages and woodland-mansion jail cells, with each applicable location having a 50% generation chance and usually one to three mobs. Give an Allay an item to collect matching loose drops, keep it within 64 blocks of its player and within 32 blocks of the search area, and expect a three-second pause after deliveries. Use a note block within 16 blocks to redirect deliveries for 30 seconds, with wool available to isolate sound. For more Allays, make one dance to a jukebox record and give it an amethyst shard; the Java Edition 1.19.1 documentation specifies a five-minute cooldown shared by the resulting pair.
