A Minecraft “alt” is an alternate player account used in addition to someone’s main account. It is not a special official Minecraft account type: current Java and Bedrock play use Microsoft accounts. Players may use another account to keep a separate identity or see a world from a fresh-player perspective, but those are common-use examples, not officially endorsed purposes. Using an alternate account to evade a suspension or restriction is explicitly prohibited by Xbox Community Standards.
What is a Minecraft alt?
“Alt” is player shorthand for an alternate account: a second account used by someone who also has a main account. Minecraft’s reviewed help and policy pages do not define “alt” as a separate official account category. For current Java and Bedrock play, players use Microsoft accounts; the Mojang-account migration period ended on December 18, 2023. Minecraft’s migration guidance explains the transition.

An account is a separate player identity, not a duplicate profile that automatically shares another account’s history. Minecraft says that a new Microsoft account joining an existing multiplayer world is treated as a new player. It does not bring the previous account’s player identity or inventory into that world. Minecraft Support’s migration FAQ describes this behavior.

Players may choose a second identity to separate different styles of play, or to enter a world as a new player while testing how an experience looks from that perspective. These are examples of possible player practices, not official Minecraft purposes or guarantees that every server permits them. The official sources do not establish how common these motivations are.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
A separate account also means a separate identity and account history. Do not assume that progress, inventory, usernames, game access, or other entitlements transfer between accounts. Minecraft’s migration guidance establishes that a new account appears as a new player in a world; it does not promise account-to-account transfers.
Are Minecraft alts allowed?
Whether an alternate account is acceptable depends on how it is used and on the rules of the server or Realm. Xbox Community Standards specifically prohibit creating alternate Microsoft accounts to get around a suspension or restriction. They also prohibit using multiple profiles to unfairly manipulate multiplayer rank. The policy lists “Create alternate Microsoft accounts to circumvent a suspension or restriction” among conduct users must not engage in. Read the Xbox Community Standards.

Minecraft’s EULA reserves the right to suspend or permanently ban users who violate the EULA or Community Standards. It also explains how Microsoft accounts apply to purchases and Realms on Microsoft platforms. See the Minecraft EULA. A reason that seems harmless to one player does not override platform rules or a server’s own conditions.

Can an alt get around a Minecraft ban?
No. Do not create or use another Microsoft account to evade a suspension or restriction. Minecraft says a banned account cannot play on servers, join Realms, or host or join multiplayer games. Its ban guidance explains that enforcement is tied to the Microsoft account’s unique ID, not the gamertag or profile name. As Minecraft Help puts it: “Bans are connected to the unique ID for your Microsoft account and not your gamertag or profile name.” Minecraft Help: Banned Minecraft Accounts and the Appeal Process.

A ban from an independently operated server is different from a Minecraft account-level enforcement action. Minecraft directs players who are banned from a privately operated server to contact that server’s administrator about an appeal. Check the specific server’s current rules and appeal process; policies differ by operator.
What to consider before using a second account
- Purpose: Decide whether a separate player identity is genuinely useful. Do not use it to bypass enforcement or manipulate multiplayer rank.
- Access: Check whether the account has the game access needed for the edition and platform you intend to use. Do not assume access or entitlements follow you from another account.
- Separate progress: Expect the second account to enter a world as a new player, without the first account’s identity or inventory.
- Server and Realm rules: Review the current rules for each multiplayer space. A use that is acceptable in one place may not be permitted in another.
- Security and family settings: Treat the second account as its own account to protect. If it belongs to a child, consider the applicable family controls.
Protect the account and manage child access
Minecraft says Microsoft-account security features, including two-factor authentication, are available to Java and Bedrock players. Use a strong, unique password, enable two-factor authentication, and do not share sign-in details. Minecraft’s parental guide covers account security and player safety.

Minecraft Java, Bedrock, and Realms require an Xbox Live or Microsoft account, and child-account age thresholds vary by location. Review the relevant settings and local age requirements before allowing a child to use an account online. Minecraft’s parental guide provides the account and family-setting information.
