The Creaking is a hostile Minecraft mob tied to a Creaking Heart in a Pale Garden. It freezes when a nearby player looks at it, then advances when the player looks away. You cannot defeat a naturally spawned Creaking by attacking it: follow the particle trail revealed by a hit to find and break its connected heart.
What is the Creaking?
The Creaking is a hostile mob introduced with Minecraft’s Pale Garden. Its defining mechanic is its gaze: it can move toward a player when unobserved, but stops while that player watches it. Minecraft’s launch article describes the encounter this way: “The creaking won’t move while you’re staring at it, but look away and it’s sure to follow.” (Minecraft, “The Garden Awakens is here,” December 3, 2024.)

In Java Edition 1.21.4, an activated Creaking also has full knockback resistance while watched. Its melee attack deals 3 damage points, equal to 1.5 hearts, and it is fire-resistant. These are version-specific mechanics documented in the Java Edition 1.21.4 changelog.

Where does the Creaking spawn?
Naturally generated Creakings appear at night in the Pale Garden, connected to a Creaking Heart inside a Pale Oak tree. The heart generates between aligned Pale Oak logs; its activation depends on the day-night cycle, not the light level. It is active at night and dormant during the day. Why does the Creaking stop when I look at it?
That is the mob’s core survival mechanic, not a bug: when activated, it remains still while a player looks at it, and can move when the player looks away. The official Bedrock changelog puts it plainly: “An activated Creaking will not move if a player is looking at it.” (Mojang, Bedrock Edition 1.21.50 changelog.)
In Java Edition 1.21.4, a player in Survival or Adventure mode activates it by looking at it from within 12 blocks; it remains active while a player is within 32 blocks. A carved pumpkin is a useful exception: wearing one lets you look at the Creaking without freezing it, so you can move while keeping track of it. Java’s changelog also notes that illagers flee from Creakings.

How do you defeat the Creaking?
For the naturally spawned, heart-connected Creaking, the objective is to destroy its Creaking Heart—not to deplete the mob’s health. Hitting it with a weapon or having a pet hit it reveals a particle trail pointing toward the linked heart. Follow the trail through the Pale Oak tree and break that heart; the connected Creaking is then removed. Java describes a twitching animation, while Bedrock says it crumbles.

- Hit it once to reveal the clue. The hit does not kill a naturally heart-connected Creaking; watch for the particle trail leading to its heart.
- Follow the trail and break the linked Creaking Heart. Destroying that heart removes the Creaking.
If you need to look around while moving, wear a carved pumpkin; unlike ordinary viewing, it does not make the Creaking freeze. In Bedrock, a heart-connected Creaking trapped with a player in a hole for more than five seconds crumbles. That is a documented soft-lock prevention behavior, not the usual way to deal with the mob.

Can you kill a Creaking with a Spawn Egg?
Yes, but a Spawn Egg creates a different variant from the naturally generated Pale Garden mob. The Spawn Egg version is not connected to a Creaking Heart, persists through day and night, and can take damage. Both Java Edition 1.21.4 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.50 document its health as one point, or half a heart. The naturally heart-connected version is invulnerable to damage in Bedrock and is removed by destroying its heart instead.

What does the Creaking Heart drop?
The rewards come from interacting with or breaking the heart, not from the Creaking as a conventional loot-bearing enemy. In Java Edition 1.21.4, attacking the connected mob makes its heart exude 2–3 Resin Clumps, with a five-second cooldown. Breaking a naturally generated heart awards 20–24 experience; a Silk Touch break can obtain the heart block, while a break without Silk Touch drops resin clumps. Bedrock Edition 1.21.50 also documents 20–24 experience from breaking a naturally generated heart and says Creakings do not drop experience.
