Yes, the warning means your Minecraft server’s tick loop is behind schedule, but it does not identify why. Minecraft targets 20 ticks per second, so the server has about 50 milliseconds to complete each tick. A single warning while starting, generating a world, upgrading, or saving can be temporary. Repeated warnings during ordinary play indicate that the workload is exceeding available CPU time, storage responsiveness, or another server resource.
Treat “Can’t keep up! Is the server overloaded?” as a measurement prompt, not a diagnosis. First confirm that the lag is server-side, then profile the server while the slowdown is happening. Only after you know whether chunks, entities, plugins, redstone, storage, or garbage collection are responsible should you change settings, remove a workload, or move to different hosting.

What does “Can’t keep up! Is the server overloaded?” mean?
The message reports missed tick deadlines. Every game tick updates entities, block logic, scheduled events, world activity, and other server tasks. At the 20-tick-per-second target, one tick should finish in roughly 50 ms. If a tick takes longer, the server falls behind real time and logs how far behind it is in milliseconds or ticks.
The text does not say that RAM, CPU, a plugin, or your internet connection is definitely at fault. It is a symptom shared by many workloads. A temporary burst can occur during first-time chunk generation, loading a large area, a world save, or server startup. A repeating message while players are moving and interacting needs investigation.

What “running behind” numbers tell you
A small, isolated delay is usually less urgent than a stream of warnings that grows during play. The number is the amount of schedule time the server has missed at that moment; it is not a percentage of CPU usage and is not a direct measure of memory consumption. Watch the pattern alongside player symptoms and a profiler rather than treating one line as a complete diagnosis.
How can I tell whether the lag is on the server, network, or client?
Identify the layer before changing server configuration. Server lag affects the simulated world, network lag affects packet delivery, and client lag affects one player’s rendering or input.
| Lag type | Typical symptoms | Useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Server lag | Mobs freeze or move in bursts, furnaces and crops update late, block breaking or placing is delayed for everyone. | Observe several players and inspect tick performance or a profile during the incident. |
| Network lag | One player rubber-bands, chat or actions arrive late, while nearby mobs continue moving normally for other players. | Compare affected players, server connection statistics, and route or packet-loss measurements. |
| Client lag | Low frames per second, stuttering camera, or slow rendering on one computer while the world simulation remains responsive. | Check the client’s frame rate, render settings, and local resource use. |
If every player sees delayed world actions, prioritize server profiling. If only one player is affected, do not assume the server warning is the cause of that player’s problem.
How do I diagnose the warning while it is happening?
Profile during the active slowdown. A report captured after a restart, when nobody is online, may describe a healthy idle server instead of the workload that caused the warning.
- Reproduce or observe the incident. Note the time, player count, location, recent exploration, large farms, redstone activity, backups, and whether the warnings occur only during startup or continue during normal play.
- Start a Paper profile during the lag. On Paper, run
/spark profiler start --timeout 600. This records ten minutes and then stops automatically. Save the report URL returned by the command. - Read the hottest areas of the report. Look for the tasks consuming the most tick time. Chunk generation or loading, entity ticking, plugin methods, hoppers and redstone, saves, and garbage collection point to different remedies.
- Test the leading hypothesis. If a plugin dominates, update it and temporarily disable a group of related plugins. If chunks dominate, stop generating new terrain for a test. If a farm or redstone build dominates, disable that build or move players away from it.
- Use binary isolation for plugins. Disable roughly half of the suspected plugins, reproduce the workload, and keep narrowing the group that changes the profile. This is faster and more reliable than removing plugins one at a time without a controlled comparison.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Record the old value, the new value, player count, world, and activity. Re-profile under comparable conditions so an improvement can be attributed to the change.
Paper’s documentation describes profiling as a way to diagnose server performance problems and notes that Paper bundles the spark profiler starting with version 1.21. Older Paper versions, vanilla servers, and other server forks may use different commands or require a separately installed profiler; check the documentation for the exact version in use.

What usually causes repeated “Can’t keep up” warnings?
The profile should determine which cause applies. The following workloads are common, but none should be assumed from the warning alone.
Chunk generation and exploration
Generating terrain is much more expensive than serving chunks that already exist. A player flying quickly into unexplored areas can create a sustained burst of generation, lighting, and storage work. Pre-generate likely play areas before peak hours, limit high-speed exploration while diagnosing, or move players to already-generated regions. If the report shows chunk loading rather than generation, fast storage and reducing simultaneous chunk requests may matter more than a graphics setting.
Entities, farms, and hopper networks
Living entities, item entities, villagers, minecarts, and other ticking objects consume server time. Dense farms can create thousands of updates, while hopper lines repeatedly search inventories and nearby containers. Use the profile to locate the world or region responsible, then reduce entity counts, add collection limits, redesign hopper systems, or turn off the offending farm when it is not needed. A global reduction may hide the actual build that needs repair.
Redstone and scheduled block work
Clocks, flying-machine systems, large piston arrays, and high-frequency block updates can monopolize a tick even when the player count is low. Pause the suspected machine and profile again. A build-specific redesign is usually safer than lowering unrelated server settings.
Plugins and their event handlers
A plugin can add work to every movement, block, inventory, or entity event. Update plugins to versions compatible with the server fork, review their configuration, and isolate suspects with controlled disable-and-test runs. Keep backups before removing a plugin that stores data, and verify that disabling it does not leave incomplete changes in the world.

World saves and storage stalls
Saving a large world, writing region files, backups, or a storage device that pauses under load can make ticks miss their deadlines. Correlate warnings with scheduled saves and backup jobs. Move backups outside peak play, avoid running several heavy write jobs at once, and investigate storage latency before simply adding memory.
Garbage-collection pauses
Java garbage collection can pause the server while it reclaims memory. A profile or runtime metrics should show whether collection pauses coincide with the warnings. If memory is repeatedly exhausted or collections are unusually long, review the Java version, heap allocation, and plugin memory behavior. More RAM helps only when evidence shows memory pressure; it does not make CPU-heavy entity or redstone work cheaper.
Should I change simulation-distance or view-distance?
These settings can reduce work, but they control different systems and should be changed only when profiling implicates chunks or entities.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall| Setting | What it controls | Paper default | Allowed range | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
simulation-distance |
The maximum chunk radius in which living entities are updated. | 10 | 3–32 | Lower values reduce entity simulation around players but make distant farms and mobs stop updating sooner. |
view-distance |
The server-side chunk radius sent to clients. | 10 | 3–32 | Lower values reduce chunk loading and network transfer but shorten the visible world horizon. |
Paper documents a default of 10 for both settings. Lowering simulation-distance is relevant to entity ticking; lowering view-distance is relevant to chunk delivery and loading. They are not universal cures for plugins, storage stalls, or a single runaway machine. Change one value, restart or reload as required by your server version, and compare profiles at similar player counts.
Will adding RAM fix an overloaded Minecraft server?
Only if the evidence points to memory pressure or garbage-collection pauses. A server that spends its tick budget on CPU-bound entity, plugin, or redstone work can have unused memory and still fall behind. Increasing the heap in that situation does not remove the workload and can sometimes make collection pauses longer.

- Use runtime metrics or a profile to confirm frequent allocation, near-exhausted heap, or long garbage-collection pauses.
- Keep the Java runtime and server fork supported for your Minecraft version.
- Allocate a sensible heap with room for the operating system and other services; do not assign all host memory to Java.
- After changing memory, reproduce the same workload and check whether pause time and tick performance actually improve.
What is max-tick-time, and should I disable it?
max-tick-time is a watchdog limit, not a performance control. Paper documents a default of 60000 milliseconds: if one tick exceeds that limit, the watchdog stops the server. Setting -1 disables the watchdog.
Disabling the watchdog does not make ticks complete faster. It can allow a server stuck in an unrecoverable operation to remain hung instead of stopping cleanly, delaying recovery and increasing the risk of a long outage. Keep the limit unless you have a specific, tested operational reason to change it, and fix the workload that produces extreme tick times.
Is Paper better than vanilla for diagnosing overload?
Paper offers a broader operational surface for diagnosis, including the bundled spark profiler on versions starting with 1.21 and documented configuration for tick, simulation, and view behavior. Vanilla may expose fewer built-in profiling conveniences, so the exact commands and available metrics differ by version. Switching forks can change plugin compatibility and game behavior; profile the current server before treating a fork migration as the remedy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I change a setting, remove a workload, or move hosts?
Choose the least disruptive action that matches measured evidence.
| Evidence | First response | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One startup, save, or world-generation spike | Monitor and schedule heavy work away from peak play. | A transient event does not prove a capacity limit. |
| Chunks dominate active profiles | Pre-generate areas, reduce exploration bursts, or adjust distance settings. | These actions target the measured chunk workload. |
| Entities, farms, hoppers, or redstone dominate | Redesign, throttle, or disable the identified build. | Removing the source is more effective than adding unrelated RAM. |
| A plugin dominates | Update, reconfigure, isolate, or replace that plugin. | The plugin’s event work is the limiting factor. |
| Persistent CPU or storage saturation after workload fixes | Consider a host or plan with stronger single-thread CPU or faster storage. | Migration is justified when the platform itself remains the measured bottleneck. |
Re-profile after every substantial change. A quiet test immediately after restarting the server is not proof that a recurring overload has been fixed.

What should I check before declaring the problem solved?
- The warning no longer recurs during the same player count and activity that triggered it.
- Players report normal mob movement, block actions, furnace updates, and inventory response.
- The profile no longer shows the original dominant workload.
- Backups, saves, and scheduled jobs still complete successfully.
- No new errors, data loss, plugin incompatibilities, or watchdog stops appear in the logs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a single “Can’t keep up” line be harmless?
Yes. Startup, first-time terrain generation, a large save, or an upgrade can briefly consume more than one tick budget. Treat it as harmless only when normal play remains responsive and the message does not recur under the usual workload.
Does lowering render distance on my computer fix server overload?
No. A client’s render-distance setting affects that client’s rendering request, while the server’s view-distance controls how much world data the server sends. Client FPS problems and server tick delays require separate troubleshooting.
Why do mobs move smoothly for one player but freeze for another?
That pattern usually suggests a network path or client problem rather than a shared server tick failure. Compare other players’ observations and check whether the server world itself is updating normally before changing server settings.
Should I restart the server whenever the warning appears?
Restarting can temporarily clear a runaway process or memory buildup, but it removes the evidence needed to diagnose the active workload. Capture a profile first when possible, then restart only as a recovery action or part of a documented maintenance plan.
