Minecraft’s PC release has a 93 Metascore from 33 critic reviews on Metacritic’s page captured on October 8, 2026. Metacritic classifies that sample as “Universal Acclaim.” It is a platform-specific aggregate of release-era reviews, not a fresh assessment of every later update or every version of the game.

What is Minecraft’s critic score?

Metacritic’s PC listing shows a 93 Metascore based on 33 critic reviews. In the sample displayed when the page was accessed on October 8, 2026, all 33 were classified as positive, with none mixed or negative. Those figures describe the reviews Metacritic lists for that PC release; they do not represent every review ever published.

Metacritic keeps critic reviews and user ratings separate. Its captured page also showed an 8.4 user score from 11,658 user ratings. That is a different measure from the critic Metascore and should not be read as part of the critic consensus.

How scores differ by platform

Minecraft does not have one critic score that applies to every platform. Metacritic’s platform panel, captured October 8, 2026, showed these separate aggregates:

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Platform Metascore Critic reviews
PC 93 33
Nintendo Switch 86 21
PlayStation 4 89 14
PlayStation Vita 84 8
Wii U 77 15
Xbox 360 82 63
Xbox One 88 14

These are dynamic page figures, not permanent ratings. The releases and review samples differ by platform, so compare a score only with its platform and review count attached. A PC score, for example, is not a substitute for the Switch or PlayStation 4 aggregate.

What did critics praise?

The strongest recurring theme in the cited critic reviews is Minecraft’s open-endedness: players can explore, create, and set their own goals rather than follow a single prescribed path. Reviewers also emphasized that the resulting experience can feel personal because each player decides what to make and how to play.

Eurogamer’s November 18, 2011 review described Minecraft as “a towering achievement in the very possibilities of gaming,” highlighting that players could make something and have an experience that felt uniquely theirs. A January 17, 2012 Eurogamer Germany excerpt similarly framed the game as a story players write and experience at their own pace. These are individual critics’ descriptions, not official statements from the game’s creator.

Why do release dates and review pages vary?

Review records can refer to different platform releases and dates. Metacritic lists November 18, 2011 as the PC release date, while GameSpot’s Minecraft page reports that the game was first released on May 10, 2009. Those dates describe different release contexts, rather than conflicting dates for one identical launch.

GameSpot displays its own 7/10 review score alongside the broader Metacritic aggregate and indexes separate reviews for platforms including Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3. A publication’s individual score is not the same as an aggregator’s score, which combines a finite set of reviews.

Is Minecraft worth trying based on the reviews?

The PC critic aggregate indicates a very strong reception among the reviews in its sample, especially for players drawn to self-directed creativity, exploration, and open-ended play. The platform-specific aggregates show that the reception varies by release, and no critic score can tell you whether the game’s free-form style suits your preferences.
