To run a Minecraft server on Windows, download the free official Java Edition server JAR, install a compatible Java Runtime Environment, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and then open the server’s port only if players outside your home network must connect. The process gives you control over the world and settings, but it also makes you responsible for Java, Windows, backups, router configuration, firewall rules, and network security.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What the official Minecraft server software does
The dedicated server download is the software that hosts a persistent Minecraft world from your own Windows computer. Players connect to that computer rather than to a world running only while one person is in a single-player session.

Minecraft states that this server setup is compatible with Java Edition only. It is not the server package for Bedrock Edition clients. The official Java Edition server software is free to download, although running it may still involve electricity, hardware, internet-service, and maintenance costs.
Self-hosting is different from using a hosted service. You control the server files, world data, configuration, and start or stop times, but your computer and internet connection become part of the service. Minecraft cautions that private-server operators change their home-network configuration and should proceed only if they understand the risks.

Requirements and decisions before installation
Use the correct edition
- The server JAR described here is for Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Everyone connecting must use a compatible Java Edition client and a version that can communicate with the server you launch.
- A Bedrock Edition device cannot be treated as a Java client simply because it is on the same network.
Install a compatible Java runtime
The official FAQ says a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE) must be installed to launch the server JAR. Java is separate from the Minecraft launcher: installing or updating the launcher does not necessarily make the java command available to Windows.
After installing Java, open Command Prompt and run:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →java -version
Windows should print the installed Java version. If Command Prompt reports that java is not recognized, install a compatible runtime or add its installation directory to the Windows PATH environment variable, then open a new Command Prompt and test again. Do not continue until this command works in the same Windows account that will run the server.
Do not confuse client requirements with server sizing
Minecraft’s published client requirements are not a dedicated-server sizing guide. For online play and continued launcher updates, Minecraft Help lists Windows 10 as the minimum operating-system version as of March 2025. Minecraft’s 2026 Java Edition client requirements describe a 64-bit system, a four-core processor, 8 GB of RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics, and a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB of VRAM for its new 1080p/30 FPS minimum target. Those figures describe the game client, not how much memory a server needs.
No official RAM-per-player figure is established in the cited Minecraft guidance. Player count, view and simulation settings, world activity, redstone machines, exploration, installed modifications, and the computer’s other workloads all affect performance. Start conservatively, watch CPU and memory use, and expand resources only when measurements show a need.
Download the server JAR and create a clean folder
- Download the official Minecraft Java Edition server JAR from Minecraft’s server-download page. Keep the downloaded file; do not open it by double-clicking yet.
- Create a dedicated folder in a location you can back up easily, such as
C:Minecraft Server. Avoid putting the world in a temporary Downloads folder. - Copy the downloaded JAR into that folder. Renaming it to
server.jarmakes later commands easier, provided you keep only one active server JAR in the folder. - Open Command Prompt in the folder. In File Explorer, click the folder’s address bar, type
cmd, and press Enter, or use Command Prompt’scdcommand to change directories. - Confirm Java from that folder:
java -version
If the version command succeeds, launch the server with:
java -jar server.jar
If you kept the original downloaded filename instead of renaming it, use that exact filename after java -jar. A filename containing spaces must be enclosed in quotation marks.

The first launch is normally an initialization run. The server creates its configuration and world files, then stops or refuses to continue until you accept the EULA. Leave the Command Prompt window visible so you can read the message and any error text.
Accept the EULA and launch again
After the first launch, look in the server folder for eula.txt. Open it with a plain-text editor such as Notepad. Change:
eula=false
to:
eula=true
Save the file without adding a second extension such as .txt.txt. The setting records that you accept Minecraft’s End User License Agreement; it is not a substitute for reading the agreement.

When startup completes, the console should remain active rather than immediately returning to the command prompt. The server is now running on the computer, and the generated world directory contains the data that must be protected by backups.

Stop the server before editing its configuration. In the server console, use the normal stop command, wait for the save to finish, edit the file, and launch again. Keep each property on its own line in the form name=value.

Start and stop the server reliably
Use a repeatable start command
From the server folder, run:
java -jar server.jar
A simple Windows batch file can save typing. Create a file named start-server.bat in the same folder with this content:
@echo off
java -jar server.jar
pause
The pause line keeps the window open if Java exits, allowing you to read the error. If you rename or replace the JAR, update the command to match the active filename.
Stop through the console
Do not routinely close the window with the X button or terminate Java from Task Manager while the world is active. Use the server console’s stop command and wait for the save to complete. An orderly stop reduces the chance of losing recent world changes.
Back up the world while it is not writing
Stop the server before copying the world and configuration folders to another disk or backup destination. At minimum, preserve the world directory, server.properties, eula.txt, and any other files your installation relies on. A backup stored only on the same Windows drive does not protect against that drive failing.

Players connected to the same home network can usually reach the server through the Windows computer’s local IP address. On the host computer, run ipconfig in Command Prompt and identify the IPv4 address for the active network adapter. The exact address varies by network and can change when the router leases a different address.
In Minecraft Java Edition, a local player enters the host’s local IPv4 address in the multiplayer server-address field. The host computer itself can connect with:
localhost
If you changed server-port from the default, append the chosen port using the same colon format described for internet connections. Every player must use the server’s current address and port, and the server must be running before they attempt to join.

Make the server reachable from the internet
Internet access requires more than starting the JAR. The configured Java port must be forwarded by your router to the Windows computer, and Windows Firewall must allow the server through. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so the exact labels and clicks cannot be universal.
1. Keep the server’s local destination consistent
Port forwarding sends traffic to a particular device on your home network. If that device’s local address changes, the rule can point to the wrong computer. Use the address-management options available in your router or otherwise ensure the server computer keeps the local address used by the forwarding rule.
2. Forward the configured port
Create a router forwarding rule for the value in server-port. With the default configuration, that value is 25565. Set the destination to the Windows computer running the JAR. If you choose a different port in server.properties, forward that value instead and tell players to use it.
3. Allow Java through Windows Firewall
When Windows displays a firewall prompt for Java, allow access on the network profile you actually use. If the prompt was dismissed, open Windows Firewall’s allowed-app or inbound-rule controls and permit the Java runtime or the configured server port. Apply the narrowest rule that works for your network rather than disabling the firewall entirely.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Give players the public address and port
Players outside your home network connect with the host’s public IPv4 address and the port, for example public-address:25565 when the default is still configured. The host can continue using localhost. Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a friend’s network; a device inside the same network may not accurately test the router’s external path.
5. Treat the public address as sensitive
Minecraft strongly warns against publicly advertising a private server with the host’s public IP address because doing so creates a security risk for the home network. Share connection details only with people you trust, keep Windows and Java updated, and remove the forwarding rule when you no longer need outside access. Minecraft does not provide support for home-network configuration or privately made servers, so you are responsible for the exposure you create.

“Java is not recognized”
The runtime is missing, or its executable directory is not on PATH. Install a compatible JRE, add its location to Windows environment variables if necessary, open a new Command Prompt, and verify with java -version. A terminal opened before the PATH change may not see the update.

Changing a property has no effect
Stop the server before editing server.properties. If the server is running, it may continue using values already loaded in memory. Check spelling, keep the value on the correct line, save the file in the server folder, and restart.
Local players cannot join
Confirm that the JAR is still running, that players are using the host’s current local IPv4 address, and that the port in their address matches server-port. Check the Windows Firewall rule and make sure the router is not being involved unnecessarily for a same-network connection.
Friends outside the network cannot join
Verify all three links in the path: the server is listening on the configured port, Windows Firewall permits it, and the router forwards that same port to the correct computer. Friends must use the public IPv4 address rather than the host’s local address. If the public address or local destination changed, update the connection details or forwarding rule.
The server launches, but players have incompatible versions
Use a Java Edition client compatible with the server version represented by the downloaded JAR. A launcher update or a different client installation does not automatically make every server version interchangeable. Keep the server JAR and the clients aligned before troubleshooting networking.
The console closes immediately
Launch from Command Prompt or the batch file so the error remains visible. Check that the JAR filename is correct, java -version succeeds, the EULA is accepted, and the Java runtime is compatible. Fix the first error reported rather than repeatedly double-clicking the file.
Self-hosting versus a managed Minecraft server
A managed service moves the server process and much of the network administration to a provider. The choice is primarily about responsibility and control, not about a different edition of Minecraft.
| Decision area | Windows self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Download Java and the JAR, create files, accept the EULA, configure the server, and test the network. | The provider normally supplies a control panel or deployment flow; exact steps depend on the service. |
| Control | Direct access to server.properties, the world, logs, and other files. |
Control depends on the provider’s panel, file access, and supported server versions. |
| Java and Windows updates | You install, test, and maintain them. | The provider generally maintains the host environment, subject to its policy. |
| Router and firewall exposure | You configure port forwarding and Windows Firewall and protect your public address. | The provider operates the public endpoint; your home router need not expose the server. |
| Backups | You design, run, and test backups. | Backup frequency and restoration options vary and must be checked in the chosen plan. |
| Uptime | Depends on your computer, power, operating-system updates, and home internet connection. | Depends on the provider’s infrastructure and service terms. |
| Recurring cost | No server-software download fee; electricity, hardware, and internet costs remain yours. | Normally a recurring service charge; prices and limits vary. |
| Player capacity | Limited by your hardware, configuration, connection, and workload; no official RAM-per-player formula is provided. | Limited by the selected plan and provider policy. |
If you want full file control and are comfortable maintaining a Windows machine and home network, self-hosting is the flexible option. If you want to avoid router exposure, local uptime problems, and routine maintenance, investigate a managed Minecraft server hosting service and verify its current Java-version support, backups, geography, player limits, uptime terms, and price before subscribing.
When Realms is the simpler alternative
Minecraft’s own guidance points to Realms as a hosted alternative for people who do not want to configure a private home server. The guidance describes automatic backups and support for up to 10 players. That removes the Windows JAR, router forwarding, and home-firewall work, but it also means accepting the features and limits of a hosted product rather than managing the files yourself.
A safe operating routine
- Install or update a compatible Java runtime and verify
java -version. - Keep the server JAR, configuration, and world in a dedicated folder.
- Stop the server cleanly before editing files or taking a backup.
- Keep the EULA setting, server version, and client versions aligned.
- Use only the settings and port you need, and record any change to
server.properties. - For LAN play, share the local address only with people on the same network.
- For internet play, forward the configured port narrowly, allow the required Windows Firewall rule, and do not publicly advertise your home IP.
- Test backups by confirming that the files can actually be restored, not merely that a copy exists.
- Remove internet forwarding when the server is private or offline.
The Bottom Line
Windows self-hosting is straightforward for Java Edition: install a compatible JRE, run the official server JAR, set eula=true, configure server.properties, and use 25565 unless you deliberately choose another port. LAN play needs the local address; internet play additionally needs router forwarding and a Windows Firewall rule. The trade-off for control is that you become responsible for security, updates, backups, and uptime.
