Yes. Minecraft Dungeons II supports online co-op, cross-play, couch co-op, and mixed sessions that combine players on one device with friends joining remotely. A party can contain up to four players total. The game is scheduled for release on September 29, 2026, with versions listed for Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Friends can join with an eight-character party code regardless of platform, while matchmaking can find players or fill open slots. Console online play may require a platform subscription; on PS5, the store listing specifically names PlayStation Plus.
Is there co-op in Minecraft Dungeons II?
Yes. Minecraft Dungeons II can be played solo or cooperatively, both locally and online. Its online mode includes cross-play, so supported players can form one party even when they are using different platforms. The official overview also identifies a mixed-co-op option: people sharing one device can play alongside friends connecting remotely.

This is a broader setup than simply adding an online lobby to a local game. You can choose an offline couch session, create an online party, or turn a local group into an online session without requiring every participant to be in the same room. See the official Minecraft Dungeons II overview for the currently listed modes and platforms.
How many players can join a Minecraft Dungeons II party?
The maximum party size is four players total: one player plus up to three others. The cap applies to the whole session, not separately to local and remote participants. For example, two people on one console and two friends online use all four available places.

Minecraft announced the “up to three other players” limit in its June 7, 2026 gameplay and release announcement. That figure is a product specification, not a recommended minimum; the game remains playable alone if you prefer a solo run.
What co-op modes does Minecraft Dungeons II have?
Solo play
Solo play is available when you want to progress without filling the other party slots. No second controller, online connection, or remote invite is needed for a one-player session.
Local couch co-op
Couch co-op places multiple players on the same device. Minecraft says local co-op works in both online and offline modes, so you can play together without connecting the session to remote players, or use the same local group as the starting point for a mixed party.
Online co-op and cross-play
Online co-op lets remote players join one session. Cross-play means the supported platform versions can play together rather than being separated into platform-specific pools. The official materials list Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported platforms.
Mixed co-op
Mixed co-op combines both arrangements in one party. Two people can share a screen locally while one or two other players connect online, provided the four-player total is not exceeded. This is useful for households that want to play together on one console while including friends elsewhere.

Can you play with friends on another platform?
Yes, provided everyone is using one of the supported versions. The co-op deep dive describes a party-code system designed to let friends join “regardless of which platform anyone is using.” That makes the party code the most platform-neutral way to organize a session.

How do you get everyone into the same party?
The simplest cross-platform method is an eight-character party code. Minecraft describes the code as a unique combination of letters and numbers for the current party; friends enter it through the “join by party code” dialog. The code can be used from the lobby or while a game is already in progress.
- Start the party. One player opens the multiplayer lobby and creates or hosts the session.
- Share the code. Give friends the displayed eight-character code exactly as shown, including every letter and number.
- Open the join dialog. Each friend selects the option to join by party code on their own platform.
- Enter the code. The joining player submits the code and accepts the party prompt.
- Check the roster. Confirm that every local and remote participant appears before launching a quest; the total cannot exceed four.
You can also use the game’s normal friends or invite flow when that is more convenient. If nobody has a specific friend to invite, matchmaking can search for players or fill unoccupied party slots. The official deep dive says matching considers factors such as core quest progress, region, and power level, and can place a player into a session that is already underway.
Can local and online players play together?
Yes. Mixed co-op is specifically intended for this combination. A local group can begin on one device, take the session online, and leave the remaining party places open for remote friends.

To avoid confusion, count people rather than devices. Three players sharing one screen use three of the four party places; only one remote player can then join. Conversely, one local player can invite up to three remote players.
- Use offline couch co-op when everyone is in the same room and no remote connection is needed.
- Use an online session when all participants are connecting separately.
- Use mixed co-op when at least one pair shares a device and another participant is remote.
Does Minecraft Dungeons II require a subscription for online co-op?
Console online multiplayer may require a platform-specific subscription sold separately. Minecraft’s launch announcement states that console online co-op has this requirement, but it does not name one universal service for every platform.
For PlayStation 5, the official store page explicitly says PlayStation Plus is required for online play and lists support for up to four online players. Do not assume that the PlayStation requirement is the exact rule on Xbox or Nintendo hardware; check the current online-service terms for the platform and country where you play.
A subscription requirement is separate from the game’s party limit. Paying for an online service does not increase the four-player cap, and an offline local session does not need an online subscription simply because the game supports online multiplayer.
How does cross-platform progression work?
The developer article says hero data is stored online. It also says that linking your platform accounts to the same Microsoft account lets you continue with the same hero on another platform, where that platform supports the feature.

- Experience an all-new chapter in the Minecraft Dungeons saga that takes you across the Overworld... and beyond.
- Craft the perfect hero with legendary gear, including a wide range of weapons, armor, and artifacts.
- Team up with new and old friends in a party of up to four players and smash your foes with the power of teamwork.
That is cross-platform progression, not the same thing as cross-play. Cross-play determines who can occupy one party at the same time; online hero storage determines whether your character data can follow you between supported platforms. Use one Microsoft account consistently if you want the best chance of carrying the same hero across devices, and keep the qualification “if the platform supports it” in mind rather than treating transfers as universal.
How are servers and matchmaking handled?
Minecraft Dungeons II uses dedicated servers for online sessions, according to the official co-op deep dive. The game chooses a server for the party based on each player’s ping, a design intended to make connections more stable across regions and platforms.
“From the start, our motto has been ‘one-click crossplay’, meaning a player can boot up the game for the first time and it just works,” says Stefan Annell, Technical Director on Minecraft Dungeons II, in the official co-op article.

Matchmaking is not described as a completely random queue. The same article says the system considers core quest progress, region, and power level, then can place a player in an existing session or use them to fill an open party slot. Those factors are intended to produce a more compatible group, but they do not guarantee identical progression or skill levels.

- Party capacity: Count every local and remote player. A full four-person party cannot accept another invite.
- Code accuracy: Generate or copy the current eight-character code again rather than reusing an older message. The code is unique to the current party.
- Supported version: Confirm that both players are on one of the platforms listed by Minecraft and have installed the current game update.
- Online entitlement: On PS5, verify that the joining account has the PlayStation Plus access identified on the store page. On other consoles, consult that platform’s current online-service rules.
- Account linking: If progression or identity appears wrong after changing devices, check that the intended platform accounts are linked to the same Microsoft account.
- Matchmaking filters: A region, quest-progress, or power-level mismatch may affect who the system finds. Try a direct party-code join when you need a specific friend.
- Connection quality: Dedicated servers reduce dependence on one player hosting, but a weak local connection or high latency can still prevent a stable session. Restart the game and network connection before creating a new party.
If the game accepts the code but the player disappears from the roster, have the party leader leave and recreate the lobby. This creates a fresh party code and avoids relying on a code tied to a previous session.

When does Minecraft Dungeons II release?
Minecraft’s announcement gives September 29, 2026 as the release date. Because online features, platform support, and subscription policies can change through launch updates or regional storefront rules, use the official game and platform pages for the latest availability information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe official sources establish the co-op features and listed platforms, but they do not establish physical retail availability or a current store listing for every edition. Check the storefront for your chosen platform before placing an order.
What is the practical answer for a four-player group?
If your group has four people, any combination is supported as long as the total is four: four remote players, four people sharing a device where local play permits it, or a mixture such as two local players and two online friends. Use a party code when platforms differ, and check the relevant console’s online-service requirement before the first session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a party code be used after the party leader starts a quest?
Yes. The official co-op article says friends can enter the code through the lobby or an ongoing game. It does not state how long a code remains valid after the party is closed, so create a fresh code if an old one fails.
Is cross-save the same feature as cross-play in Minecraft Dungeons II?
No. Cross-play concerns joining the same multiplayer session, while cross-platform progression concerns accessing hero data on another supported platform. The developer describes online hero storage and Microsoft-account linking, but still qualifies transfers with platform support.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do all players need to use the same Microsoft account?
No single shared account is described for a multiplayer party. The progression guidance concerns linking each player’s platform accounts to that player’s Microsoft account so their own hero can be recognized across supported devices.
Can I buy any edition and assume every co-op feature is included?
The official co-op pages describe the game’s modes but do not establish identical edition contents or retail availability for every platform. Check the exact platform listing and edition details before purchasing, especially if your group uses different devices.
