Minecraft fences are see-through barrier blocks that separate areas while stopping most mobs from walking or jumping through. Their entity collision box is 1.5 blocks high even though the model looks roughly one block tall. You can craft wooden fences from matching planks and sticks, craft Nether Brick Fences from Nether Bricks and Nether Brick, connect posts into pens and boundaries, and attach leads to them as hitching points. The right fence depends mainly on your build palette and whether you need wood or Nether materials; the basic barrier and lead behavior remains the same.
What is a fence in Minecraft?
A fence is a transparent-looking barrier block used to divide spaces, outline structures, protect a base, or keep animals in a pen. Unlike a wall, a fence lets you see through its openings. Fences occupy the center of their block space and automatically form connections with suitable neighboring blocks, creating a continuous boundary without requiring a separate connector piece.

The apparent height is deceptive. The collision box that entities encounter is 1.5 blocks tall, so most mobs cannot simply jump over a normal fence. Players can still interact with the post, look through it, and use it as a compact boundary in places where a solid wall would block the view.
How do you craft a wooden fence?
Use matching planks and sticks in a crafting table. Every wooden fence variant follows the same recipe family, and the output is three fences. Matching matters: choose one plank type for the recipe rather than combining unrelated wood types.

Mojang describes the recipe as planks and sticks using any type of plank, including warped and crimson. The fence’s appearance follows the wood you use, so selecting the matching plank lets the boundary fit an oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, pale oak, bamboo, crimson, or warped build.
Wooden fence recipe and output
| Fence family | Ingredients | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden fences | Matching planks and sticks | 3 fences |
| Nether Brick Fence | Nether Bricks and Nether Brick | 6 fences |
The recipe output is per crafting operation. If you are enclosing a large farm, calculate the perimeter first and craft in batches so you do not run out of posts halfway around the enclosure.
Which fence types can you make?
The reference list includes twelve wooden fence variants and one Nether variant. Wooden types are oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, pale oak, bamboo, crimson, and warped. Nether Brick Fence is the separate Nether-material option.
- Overworld wood: oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, pale oak, and bamboo.
- Nether wood: crimson and warped.
- Nether masonry: Nether Brick Fence.
Choose the material that matches nearby blocks and the visual language of the build. A spruce farm, for example, can use spruce fences for a consistent palette, while a Nether fortress-style build can use Nether Brick Fence. The material changes the appearance and connection rules, not the basic purpose of separating spaces.
How do fences connect to other blocks?
Fences connect automatically to compatible adjacent blocks. Wooden fences connect to other wooden fences, and they also connect to adjacent solid blocks. Nether Brick Fences have their own connection behavior and connect to fence gates.
Mixing wooden and Nether brick fences
A wooden fence does not directly connect to a Nether Brick Fence. This can leave a visible change in the shape of the boundary, but the two materials still occupy their block spaces and form a barrier. Mobs cannot pass through the material boundary simply because the visual connection is different.

How high is a Minecraft fence?
A fence has a 1.5-block entity collision height. Its model can look close to one block tall, but the extra collision height is why most mobs cannot jump over it. This makes a fence more effective than its appearance suggests while preserving visibility across the boundary.
Can mobs jump over fences?
Most mobs cannot jump over an ordinary fence. The important exceptions are movement abilities rather than a weakness in the fence itself: spiders can climb fences, and camels can walk over them. If either type is relevant to your build, a fence alone is not a complete containment solution.

Fences are therefore best for ordinary animal pens, paths, and base borders where visibility and compactness matter. For a threat that can climb or step over the barrier, add a design feature that addresses that specific movement behavior instead of assuming every mob treats the fence identically.
Can a player jump over a fence?
A player normally cannot jump directly over the 1.5-block collision. You can, however, create a deliberate step-up arrangement. Placing a carpet, trapdoor, moss carpet, or pale moss carpet above a fence gives players a way to jump onto or over the barrier while still blocking most mobs.
This technique is useful for a pen entrance, a shortcut over a decorative boundary, or a parkour route. Test the arrangement in the exact location because the top block changes how the player approaches the fence and how the surrounding blocks connect.

How do you keep animals inside a fenced pen?
Build the fence as a closed perimeter with no unplanned gaps, then use a fence gate or a controlled opening for entry. Because the fence is visible through, you can inspect animals from outside without opening the enclosure. The 1.5-block collision keeps most ordinary animals from jumping out.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose the fence material that matches the surrounding build.
- Lay out the pen boundary and check every corner for a continuous run.
- Place the fence posts around the perimeter; compatible posts connect automatically.
- Add a gate where you need regular access, keeping the opening away from corners if that makes animal handling easier.
- Move animals into the pen, close the opening, and inspect the perimeter from inside and outside.
Remember that a fence is not universal mob-proofing. Spiders can climb it, camels can walk over it, and a carpet or similar top piece can create a player route over the boundary. Design the pen around the animals and hostile mobs that will actually use the area.
Can you attach a lead to a fence?
Yes. A fence post can anchor a lead, making it a compact hitching point for a horse or another mob that accepts a lead. This is one reason fences are useful beyond simple walls: the same post can define the pen and hold an animal temporarily outside it.
Using a fence as a hitching post
- Place a fence post where you want the animal secured.
- Use a lead on the animal to attach it.
- Use the lead on the fence post to transfer the anchor to the post.
- Keep the post within a sensible distance of the pen or stable so the animal remains where you intend.
A lead anchor does not replace a closed enclosure. Treat it as a flexible tie point for loading, unloading, or parking an animal while the fence perimeter provides the main separation.
What are fences used for besides pens?
Fences are compact all-purpose separators. Their transparency makes them practical where a wall would hide a view or make a path feel enclosed.

- Stable and hitching areas: Combine a pen perimeter with posts for leads.
- Decorative structures: Use connected posts as railings, balconies, bridges, and framework.
- Temporary separation: Divide two work areas while retaining visibility between them.
Mojang characterizes fences as especially good at keeping two areas separated. That narrow purpose is a strength: they use less visual mass than a wall while still creating a meaningful collision boundary.

Can fences be used as furnace fuel or with note blocks?
Yes. Fences can be used as furnace fuel, and placing one under a note block produces a bass note. These are secondary uses rather than the reason most players craft fences, but they can be useful when a build already has spare posts or when you are designing a note-block instrument.
Fuel efficiency and musical arrangements depend on the rest of your setup, so treat these properties as block functions rather than a reason to dismantle a completed pen. Keep the posts in place when the fence is serving a structural or containment role.

What is the difference between a wooden fence and a Nether Brick Fence?
The main differences are material, appearance, recipe output, and connection behavior. Wooden fences use matching planks and sticks and yield three per recipe; Nether Brick Fence uses Nether Bricks and Nether Brick and yields six. Wooden fences connect to other wooden fences, while Nether Brick Fences follow their own connection rules and connect to fence gates.
| Comparison | Wooden fence | Nether Brick Fence |
|---|---|---|
| Material family | Overworld or Nether wood | Nether masonry |
| Recipe ingredients | Matching planks and sticks | Nether Bricks and Nether Brick |
| Recipe output | 3 | 6 |
| Connection behavior | Connects to other wooden fences and adjacent solid blocks | Connects to compatible Nether fence structures and fence gates |
| Direct connection to the other family | Does not directly connect to Nether Brick Fence | Does not directly connect to wooden fences |
Both families provide the characteristic fence barrier and can be used to divide spaces. Select between them based on the resources available and the style of the build, then account for the different connection behavior when a border changes materials.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When were fences added to Minecraft?
Fences were added in August 2010 during Minecraft’s eighth Seecret Friday update. Mojang’s contemporary explanation presented them as a major barrier block, particularly useful for separating areas and protecting bases from hostile mobs such as spider jockeys.
Fence coverage has expanded with later releases. Nether Brick Fence arrived in Java Beta 1.9 prereleases; later updates added additional wood types, waterlogging support in the 1.13-era snapshot period, crimson and warped fences in the 1.16 cycle, mangrove in 1.19, bamboo and cherry in the 1.20 cycle, and pale oak in the 1.21.2 cycle. Exact availability can differ by edition and patch, so check the recipe list in the version you are playing when a particular wood is missing.

What should you check before building a fence boundary?
A short planning check prevents most containment and connection surprises.
- Material: Are all wooden recipe planks the same type, and does the fence match the build palette?
- Perimeter: Is the boundary closed, including corners and the area around the intended gate?
- Mob behavior: Could a spider climb it or could a camel walk over it?
- Player access: Do you need a gate, lead post, or carpet-and-fence step?
- Connections: Will a material change create a non-connecting join between wood and Nether brick?
- Edition: Is the fence type available in your current edition and patch?
Checking these points before placing a long perimeter is faster than rebuilding a pen after animals escape or a mixed-material section fails to connect visually.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can camels walk over a Minecraft fence?
Yes. Camels can walk over a normal fence, so a camel enclosure needs a different containment plan or an additional barrier. This is separate from the usual 1.5-block collision that stops most mobs.
Why do two different fence materials fail to join?
Wooden fences and Nether Brick Fences do not directly connect because they use different connection rules. The material boundary still blocks passage, but the posts will not form the same continuous visual connection as matching fences.

Which blocks let a player get over a fence?
A carpet, trapdoor, moss carpet, or pale moss carpet placed above a fence can provide a step-up route for players. The arrangement is useful for access while retaining a barrier against most mobs.
Can a fence hold a mob without a pen around it?
A fence post can anchor a lead, so it can temporarily hitch an animal or other lead-compatible mob. A lead is a tie point, not a replacement for a closed perimeter if the mob must remain contained.
