Use Java Edition snapshots if you want to follow the Java development track on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer. Use Bedrock Preview on supported non-Android devices, or Bedrock Beta on Android, for the Bedrock track. Neither route is universally first: the dated changelog for the feature you want determines which build contains it, and some features also require a separate world-level experiment.
These are different development channels, not two names for one beta. Before launching either, protect your normal saves and confirm that your device, friends, and target feature match the same edition and build.

What is the difference between Java snapshots and Bedrock Preview?
Java snapshots are pre-release builds of Java Edition, while Bedrock Preview and Beta are pre-release builds of Bedrock Edition. Each channel follows its own codebase, release notes, platform rules, and feature schedule; installing one does not give you the other edition’s test build.
Java snapshots
Java is the desktop edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux. You opt into snapshots from the Minecraft Launcher’s Installations tab, then select the snapshot installation when you play. Java may expose an early feature only after you create a world with the relevant experimental feature toggle enabled.

Bedrock Preview and Beta
Bedrock testing uses Preview on supported platforms and Beta on Android. Preview is a separate testing application where the platform provides one; Android joins the Beta program through Google Play, and that Beta client replaces the regular Android client while enrolled. Minecraft describes these builds as work in progress and warns that they can be unstable and may not represent final-version quality (official Bedrock changelog).
The official edition overview explains the two routes and their platform split (Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock guide). Treat the edition and build number as separate decisions: a feature announcement for one track is not proof that the other track has it.
Which devices can run each test channel?
Your hardware often decides the practical answer before the feature does. Java snapshots require a supported desktop computer; Bedrock Preview or Beta is the choice for consoles, phones, and other Bedrock platforms.

Platform availability can change, and console access is not an automatic entitlement for every account. Check the current Minecraft Help installation guidance for the device you own before changing your client.
How do I enable Java snapshots?
You need Java Edition ownership on a supported computer, the Minecraft Launcher, and a disposable test world or a verified backup. Do not point a snapshot at the only copy of a valuable save.

- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Installations and turn on the option to show snapshots.
- Create or select a snapshot installation, then choose the dated build you want to inspect.
- Open that snapshot’s changelog and search for the exact feature. Note whether the notes require an experimental feature toggle or a newly created world.
- Before launching, copy important saves somewhere outside the normal worlds folder, or create a completely separate test world.
- Launch the snapshot installation and test only in that disposable world. Keep the release installation selected when you want to return to ordinary Java.

How do I join Bedrock Preview or Beta?
Choose the instructions for your platform, then read the build notes before creating a world. Bedrock’s channel names are platform-dependent: Android uses Beta, while the other listed mobile and console routes use Preview.
Android Beta
- Back up worlds stored on the device.
- Open the Minecraft listing in Google Play and use its Beta enrollment option.
- Install the Beta update and confirm that the version shown in the game matches the build you intend to test.
- Use a separate test world. Because Beta replaces the normal Android client, leave the program and restore the ordinary app before relying on a production save.
iOS Preview
- Use the Minecraft Preview TestFlight route when places are available.
- Expect limited capacity; a full TestFlight program is an availability issue, not evidence that your account or device is defective.
- Keep a backup and use a new test world while enrolled.
Xbox Preview
- Open the Microsoft Store on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Search for Minecraft Preview and install the Preview application when your account is eligible.
- Start with a copied or disposable world and confirm the Preview build number in its notes.
PlayStation Preview
- Use the digital Minecraft installation on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5.
- Open Settings inside Minecraft and select Preview, following the prompts shown for your account.
- Check the ownership requirements in Minecraft Help; not every account receives automatic access.
Windows Bedrock Preview
On Windows, select the Bedrock Preview route supplied for your account rather than the Java snapshot installation. Keep the two clients and their test worlds clearly separated, then verify the Preview changelog before enabling experiments.
Do I need to turn on Experiments or another feature toggle?
Sometimes. A development build only determines which code is installed; a world-level toggle determines whether particular unfinished content is active in that world.

Java
Some Java snapshot features are behind an experimental feature toggle during world creation. If the snapshot notes identify one, create a new world and enable the named option there. Do not assume that every item listed in a snapshot is active in an existing world.

Bedrock
Bedrock uses the world’s Experiments settings for some new content. The setting can apply when creating a world and, for supported experiments, to an existing world. The official Bedrock explanation warns that an experimental world cannot be restored to a non-experimental state (Bedrock Experimental Features guidance).
Read the dated changelog first, then inspect the world settings it names. A missing toggle usually means either that the selected build is wrong or that the feature is not enabled by default; it does not establish that the feature is absent from the edition.
Can I use my main world in a snapshot or Preview?
Use a separate test world and keep a backup of anything important. Minecraft explicitly warns that testing versions can corrupt a world and recommends backing up or running them in a different folder from main worlds (official testing warning).

- Bedrock: once Experiments are enabled, the world remains experimental and cannot be converted back to a normal, non-experimental state. Make the decision on a copy, not on the original save.
- Android Beta: the Beta client replaces the regular Android client, increasing the importance of an external backup before enrollment.
- Preview applications: treat the Preview world as disposable even when the app is separate from the release client.
A backup is useful only if it is outside the client’s active worlds location and can be restored independently. Do not overwrite that backup with a later experimental save.
How can I tell which edition received a feature first?
Compare dated changelogs for the specific feature instead of relying on a general claim that Java or Bedrock is always ahead. Version labels are identifiers, not performance statistics or a permanent release-order rule.

- Write down the exact feature name and any synonyms used in announcements.
- Open the Java snapshot notes and the Bedrock Beta/Preview notes for the relevant dates.
- Confirm the edition, build number, and publication date in each entry.
- Look for a requirement such as a Java feature toggle or Bedrock Experiments setting.
- Only then create the matching test world and verify the feature in that build.
For a current example from October 2026, Minecraft listed Java 26.4 Snapshot 6, published October 27, and Bedrock Beta/Preview 26.70.22, posted October 28. Both changelogs discuss snow bricks and the Cold Sulfur Cube (Java Snapshot 6 notes; Bedrock 26.70.22 notes). That coincidence shows how to compare notes; it does not prove exact feature parity or establish a lasting lead for either edition.

Can Java and Bedrock players test together?
Do not plan on ordinary Java and Bedrock clients sharing a multiplayer session or server. Multiplayer testing is edition-specific, and development builds add a version-matching requirement.
- Java snapshot players need a Java-compatible server or session that supports the same snapshot expectations.
- Bedrock Preview and Beta participants generally need matching development versions; a release client may not join a test client.
- Eligible Bedrock Realms subscribers have a separate testing-Realm option, but this is distinct from an ordinary Realm.
- Owning both editions on Windows does not merge their worlds, servers, or multiplayer protocols.
Minecraft’s edition guidance and multiplayer notes explain the separation (Java and Bedrock overview). Before inviting friends, have everyone install the same channel and build, then use a copy of the test world.

Work through the build, toggle, platform, and world checks in that order. Most apparent omissions are caused by using the wrong channel or an unconfigured world rather than by a broken installation.
The feature is mentioned but not visible
- Recheck the edition and exact build number in the dated changelog.
- Confirm whether the notes require a newly created world.
- Enable the named Java feature toggle or Bedrock Experiment before loading the test world.
- Do not use an old release world as evidence that the build lacks the feature.
Friends cannot join
- Compare every player’s edition, channel, and full version number.
- Have Bedrock participants install the same Preview or Beta build.
- Do not mix Java and Bedrock clients in the expectation that normal cross-edition multiplayer will work.
- If a Realm is involved, verify that it is the separate testing-Realm option available to eligible Bedrock subscribers.
The platform has no Preview or Beta option
- Check whether your device uses a different channel name: Android uses Beta, while iOS and consoles use Preview.
- On iOS, capacity may be full.
- On consoles, verify the required digital ownership and the current store or in-game path.
- On desktop, ensure you are opening the Bedrock Preview route rather than Java’s snapshot list.
The world will not load after testing
Stop using the experimental copy, restore the untouched backup, and do not open the damaged save in a newer or ordinary client until you have secured another copy. Java experimental worlds can have future-upgrade problems, while Bedrock experimental worlds cannot be reverted to a non-experimental state.

Is Minecraft Preview the same thing as Beta?

Can I install a Java snapshot on an Xbox or PlayStation?
No. Java snapshots are the desktop Java route for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Xbox and PlayStation use Bedrock Preview instead.
Why does an announced block not appear in my test world?
The announcement may refer to a different edition or a later build, or the feature may require a new world and an experiment toggle. Check the exact changelog entry and world settings before reinstalling the client.

No. Bedrock marks a world as experimental after its Experiments settings are used, and Minecraft does not provide a conversion back to the non-experimental state. Restore a backup made before the toggle instead.
Why is iOS Preview unavailable even though other players have it?
The iOS route uses TestFlight, whose available places are limited. A full program can prevent enrollment temporarily without indicating a problem with your Minecraft account.
