The title doesn’t name the item, so identifying it as a Lead is an inference. It is the strongest fit because the official Java 1.21.6 release notes connect the Happy Ghast’s behavior with changed leash mechanics and an updated Lead recipe. The notes do not say that Leads are objectively more frustrating, or that players broadly agree they are.
Java Edition 1.21.6, titled “Chase the Skies,” was published on June 17, 2025, and added the Happy Ghast. Minecraft’s official release article and its official release-notes mirror document the changes.
What makes using a Lead with a Happy Ghast awkward
The release notes give the Happy Ghast a 10-block roaming distance when leashed. That gives a Lead a clear role if you want to keep the mob nearby, but it also limits how far it can roam on its own. The mismatch is especially noticeable because the Happy Ghast is a flying mount, not simply a creature intended to trail behind a player.

When nobody is riding or standing on it, the Happy Ghast roams. The notes specify a 64-block roaming radius generally, reduced to 32 blocks when it wears a Harness, and a 10-block roaming distance when leashed. These are documented Java Edition mechanics; don’t assume the same details apply to Bedrock Edition without checking that edition’s notes.

How the Harness works
A Harness is crafted from 3 Leather, 2 Glass blocks, and 1 Wool block; it takes the wool’s color and can be redyed in a crafting grid. There are 16 colors. Shears can remove the Harness when nobody is mounted. The Happy Ghast can carry up to four players when equipped.

Getting a Happy Ghast
- Find a Dried Ghast in a Nether Fossil structure, or craft one from 1 Soul Sand block and 8 Ghast Tears.
- Keep the Dried Ghast continuously waterlogged. It changes hydration level over approximately 20 minutes before spawning a Ghastling.
- Wait about 20 minutes for the Ghastling to grow into a Happy Ghast, or feed it Snowballs to speed up its growth.
- Equip the Happy Ghast with a Harness if you want to ride it; use a Lead if your priority is keeping it close while it roams.
