mmdvd.dll errors may appear as “This application failed to start because mmdvd.dll was not found,” “The file mmdvd.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “Error loading mmdvd.dll.” The mmdvd.dll file belongs to the old DVDExpress application, not to Windows itself, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the DVD software that originally installed it.
The 60-second answer
mmdvd.dll is a 32-bit application component associated with DVDExpress, an old DVD and MPEG player developed by Mediamatics, Inc. Its reported description is “DirectShow DVD Abstraction API.”
It is not normally a Windows system file, modern DirectX component, Visual C++ runtime file, or standard hardware-driver file. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into System32 or `SysWOW64.
Use this order:
- Identify the DVD application that is requesting the file.
- Repair it from Windows Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the complete DVDExpress or OEM DVD-player package from its original CD, recovery media, or computer manufacturer support package.
- Check Windows Security quarantine.
- Use System Restore if the problem began after a recent removal or update.
- Run DISM and SFC only if Windows itself also has corruption symptoms.
- Replace the obsolete DVD player if its original installer is unavailable or it cannot run on your version of Windows.
What is mmdvd.dll?
mmdvd.dll is a Dynamic Link Library used by DVDExpress. The file provides part of the program’s DirectShow-based DVD playback functionality.

DVDExpress was distributed mainly with older computers through OEM manufacturers. It appeared in DVD software packages supplied with systems from companies including Toshiba and Compaq. That means the file may be inside an old manufacturer multimedia folder rather than a Windows folder.
Commonly reported file metadata identifies it as a Win32 or 32-bit DLL. Some file indexes report version 3.10.0.3, a size of 72,704 bytes, and Mediamatics copyright information from the late 1990s. Those details come from third-party file metadata and are not guaranteed to match every copy. Do not use the reported size or version as the sole test of whether a replacement is safe.
Microsoft describes DirectShow as legacy multimedia technology and recommends newer Media Foundation-based technologies for new software. Microsoft does not identify mmdvd.dll as one of Windows’ own DirectShow binaries.
What did the file come with?
The most likely parent program is:
- DVDExpress
- An OEM DVD player bundled with an older computer
- A manufacturer multimedia or recovery package containing DVDExpress components
There is not enough evidence to associate mmdvd.dll with a particular modern game, Windows Media Player, Paint, a current media player, or a current Microsoft runtime.

The error usually means the application still expects a private DLL that is no longer beside its executable. Typical causes include:
| Cause | What happened | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Partial uninstall | The DVD player was removed incompletely | Reinstall or fully remove the old application |
| Damaged installation | The DLL or another application file was corrupted | Use Repair, then reinstall if needed |
| Old backup restored | The executable returned without all supporting files | Restore the complete application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software isolated the file | Verify its origin before restoring anything |
| Wrong architecture | A replacement does not match the 32-bit application | Reinstall the complete compatible package |
| Legacy incompatibility | The program cannot run correctly on current Windows | Replace the obsolete DVD software |
| Startup residue | Windows still launches a removed application | Remove its startup entry or uninstall it completely |
A message such as “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that mmdvd.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing. Replacing only the named file may therefore fail.
Fix 1: Identify the application requesting mmdvd.dll
Start with the error dialog. The title bar or surrounding message often names the executable or DVD program that is failing.
Check the installation folder
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the folder before the executable name.
- Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
If the target points to an old DVD player, manufacturer multimedia folder, or recovery-installed application, that is likely the parent program.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can also check the shortcut location:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Look for the program’s executable and nearby DLL files.
- Do not delete or replace files yet.
If the error appears during startup and no DVD software opens, inspect startup entries:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old DVD player, media utility, or unknown entry associated with the folder you identified.
- Select it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup entry can stop the message, but it does not repair the application. If you still need the DVD software, reinstall it from its original package.
Fix 2: Repair DVDExpress or the OEM DVD application
Windows may be able to restore missing application files through its repair function.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the old DVD application.
- Choose Change or Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
A successful repair should make the original application open without the missing-file message. If the error remains, the repair package may not contain the complete legacy installation, or the application may have been damaged beyond repair.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete original DVD package
Reinstalling the application is the most reliable repair because it restores the DLL together with its related files, registry settings, codecs, and dependencies.
Use one of these sources:
- The original DVD software CD supplied with the computer
- The computer manufacturer’s recovery media
- An official manufacturer support archive that identifies the exact computer model
- A complete OEM recovery image
Do not obtain only mmdvd.dll. A standalone DLL may be the wrong build, may not include required companion files, and may have been modified.
Before reinstalling:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Remove the damaged DVD application if it is listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer.
- If the installer fails, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Restart again.
- Test the DVD application.
If the installer is on an old disc, copy its contents to a local folder first, then run the setup program as administrator. If Windows displays a compatibility warning, do not force the installation repeatedly. The software may depend on legacy components that current Windows no longer supports.
The definitive fix remains reinstalling the complete DVDExpress or OEM DVD-player package, not reconstructing it from individual files.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have quarantined a file after the application was installed or updated. A detection is not automatically a false positive, so verify the file’s origin before restoring it.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions.
- Look for an entry involving
mmdvd.dllor the DVD application. - Expand the entry and inspect its path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from the legitimate original application installer and the computer has been scanned.
Microsoft documents quarantine restoration and Allow on device actions in Windows Security. If the file came from an unofficial DLL download, do not restore it. Remove it and reinstall the application from trusted original media instead.
After restoring a legitimate quarantined file, restart the application. If Windows Security quarantines it again, leave it isolated and perform a full scan. The program may be damaged or the file may not be trustworthy.

Fix 5: Check whether the old software is compatible
A current 64-bit installation of Windows can generally run many 32-bit programs, but that does not guarantee that an old DVD player will work correctly. DVDExpress was designed for older Windows environments and may rely on obsolete codecs, drivers, copy-protection systems, or hardware interfaces.
Try the built-in compatibility troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select the affected DVD application.
- Follow the recommended test.
You can also configure the executable manually:
- Right-click the application’s executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the program’s documentation or original installer indicates that it needs one.
- Select Run this program as an administrator if the program requires elevated access.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If the program reports that it is “not designed to run on Windows” or returns status 0xc000007b, the problem may be an architecture mismatch or a damaged dependency rather than simply a missing mmdvd.dll.

Do not install a 64-bit substitute for a DLL used by a 32-bit application. The correct fix is a compatible copy installed by the original application package.
Fix 6: Reinstall runtimes only when the error names them
Installing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages or the DirectX End-User Runtime does not normally install DVDExpress or mmdvd.dll.
The DirectX End-User Runtime provides legacy components such as D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX 1.1. It does not provide this Mediamatics DVD component.
Visual C++ Redistributables provide Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. Install one only if the error separately names a missing Microsoft runtime, such as a specific MSVCP or VCRUNTIME file, and use Microsoft’s official architecture-appropriate package.
Do not install these runtimes as a substitute for reinstalling DVDExpress. They may be relevant to another dependency, but they do not restore the application’s private DLL.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a tool for downloading, restoring, or repairing every DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Running:
regsvr32 mmdvd.dll
is unlikely to fix this problem. It may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found, or it may fail because the file is missing or the command is using the wrong architecture.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official installer or documentation specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL. A missing DVDExpress component should normally be restored by reinstalling the application.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features only for related Windows problems
Windows Features cannot install DVDExpress or mmdvd.dll, but checking them can help when the error is actually related to a broader legacy-media setup.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the enabled features.
- Do not enable random features to resolve this DLL message.
- If you changed a feature for another documented reason, restart Windows and test again.
There is no Windows Feature that should be treated as the official source for this third-party application DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 9: Run DISM and SFC for Windows corruption
Because mmdvd.dll is an application file rather than an established Windows-protected component, DISM and SFC are secondary fixes. Use them when Windows has additional symptoms, such as damaged system apps, repeated component errors, failed updates, or unexplained crashes.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the DVD application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components and normally will not recreate a third-party DVDExpress DLL. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the original application. If the message remains, return to the application reinstall step.
Repeating SFC and DISM without identifying what changed is unlikely to solve a missing private application file. If manually checking Windows components and dependencies is taking too long, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs require the full version. Reinstalling DVDExpress remains the definitive fix for this file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after uninstalling software, installing an update, restoring a backup, or changing system configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall the original DVD package instead.
Fix 11: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to hardware
mmdvd.dll is not established as a standard hardware-driver file. Do not update every driver simply because this DLL is missing.
Check Device Manager if the DVD drive itself is missing, has a warning icon, or cannot read discs:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Look for a warning icon or missing device.
- Right-click the drive and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Also expand Display adapters and Sound, video and game controllers if playback hardware is malfunctioning.
- Restart Windows.
If the hardware manufacturer provides a driver, obtain it from the computer or component manufacturer’s official support page. A driver update will not normally recreate mmdvd.dll, and reinstalling the DVD application is still required for a missing application file.
If checking each device and locating the correct manufacturer package is taking longer than expected, Outbyte Driver Updater can show reported driver issues in a scan; the free scan identifies problems, while driver installation through the full version is optional. This does not replace reinstalling DVDExpress when the application itself is missing its DLL.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites offering an isolated mmdvd.dll download. A file from an unverified source may be:
- Modified or malicious
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- From an incompatible DVDExpress build
- Missing other required dependencies
- Unsigned or impossible to trace to the original installer
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create additional conflicts. The correct location is normally the application’s own installation folder, and the correct file should come from the complete application distributor package.
Safe sources are the original DVD, legitimate OEM recovery media, the computer manufacturer’s identified support package, or a complete recovery image. There is no current official Microsoft package whose purpose is to install mmdvd.dll.
When the original DVD software is unavailable
If the OEM installer cannot be found, the computer manufacturer no longer provides the package, or the program fails compatibility testing, stop trying to rebuild the installation one DLL at a time.
Remove the broken startup entry or uninstall the obsolete DVD player. Then use a currently supported DVD application that is compatible with your Windows version and optical drive. If you need files or settings from the old program, back them up before removing it.

FAQ
Is mmdvd.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with DVDExpress, an old third-party DVD player from Mediamatics, Inc. It should not normally be expected in the Windows system folders.
Is mmdvd.dll part of DirectX?
No verified Microsoft DirectX package installs it. DVDExpress used legacy DirectShow technology, but that does not make this DLL a Microsoft DirectX system file.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the error separately identifies a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime dependency. Visual C++ Redistributable does not normally restore mmdvd.dll.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
It is commonly identified as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. Copies from unidentified sources should not be assumed to match that architecture or the application’s expected build.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I register mmdvd.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Reinstall the complete DVDExpress or OEM DVD package instead.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling a DVD program?
The uninstall may have left a shortcut, startup entry, or related program that still expects mmdvd.dll. Remove the leftover entry or reinstall the complete application if you still need it.
Will DISM or SFC restore mmdvd.dll?
Normally no. They repair protected Windows components, while mmdvd.dll is a third-party application file. Use them only when Windows has separate corruption symptoms.
What if antivirus quarantined the file?
Inspect Protection history, verify that the file came from legitimate original software, scan the system, and restore it only when its provenance is clear. Otherwise reinstall the application from trusted media.
What is the safest permanent solution?
Repair or reinstall the original DVDExpress or OEM DVD-player package. If that software is obsolete or unavailable, replace it with a currently supported DVD application rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
