Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, aim assist is a controller aid that helps keep your reticle aligned with a target, but it does not aim or track for you. Your starting point should be 1.65 horizontal and vertical sensitivity, a 0.95–1.00 ADS multiplier, Dynamic response curve, both aim-assist toggles enabled and minimum stick deadzones of 3. Treat those numbers as a beta/pre-launch baseline—not an official launch recommendation—and retune after Activision publishes final settings and patches.
What aim assist actually does
A controller stick has less fine mechanical precision than a mouse, particularly when a target crosses your screen quickly. Aim assist is designed to reduce that disadvantage by helping your reticle remain aligned as you make your own input. The assistance is most noticeable during small corrections and while you are already aiming near an opponent.

It is not an automatic targeting system. You still have to place the reticle, press the aim button, control recoil and move the stick in the direction of the target. If your crosshair starts far from an enemy, aim assist cannot replace the initial turn. If you stop providing useful input, it cannot reliably maintain a target for you.
Tracking therefore depends on three interacting factors: your look sensitivity, your ADS multiplier and the amount of controller movement that is ignored by the deadzone. Aim-assist behavior can make small corrections feel easier, but the game still rewards a repeatable stick motion and consistent practice.

How sensitivity changes tracking
Horizontal and vertical sensitivity
Horizontal and vertical sensitivity determine how quickly the camera responds to left-stick or right-stick movement on the look axes. Higher values let you turn faster, react to close-range targets and complete 180-degree turns with less physical stick travel. The trade-off is precision: a small input produces a larger reticle movement, so it is easier to sweep past a target or oscillate around it.
Lower values give you more control over small movements and can make long-range tracking steadier. They also make rapid target switches and emergency turns slower. There is no universal “best” value because the right balance depends on your controller, field of view, movement habits and the ranges at which you usually fight.
ADS sensitivity multiplier
The ADS multiplier changes look speed while aiming down sights relative to your normal look speed. A value below 1.00 slows scoped movement without slowing hip-fire turning. That can stabilize sustained tracking when an opponent moves across your sight picture. A value at 1.00 keeps ADS and hip-fire response at the same proportional speed.
If hip-fire movement feels controlled but your sight overshoots during ADS, reduce the multiplier slightly rather than immediately lowering both main sensitivity values. If ADS feels sluggish when you follow strafing targets, move the multiplier back toward 1.00. This is a practical tuning relationship, not the result of a published controlled performance study.

A defensible beta starting setup
SCUF’s dated MW4 beta/pre-launch guide provides a useful baseline. It is a starting setup for testing, not an Activision specification, and the final menu may use different labels or ranges.
| Setting | Starting value | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal sensitivity | 1.65 | Left-right camera speed for turns and target switches |
| Vertical sensitivity | 1.65 | Up-down camera speed for recoil control and elevation changes |
| ADS sensitivity multiplier | 0.95–1.00 | ADS movement speed relative to hip-fire look speed |
| Aim response curve | Dynamic | How stick displacement is translated into camera movement |
| Target Aim Assist | On | Enables the target-alignment aid |
| ADS Aim Assist | On | Keeps assistance active while aiming down sights |
| Left stick minimum deadzone | 3 | Smallest input accepted from the left stick |
| Right stick minimum deadzone | 3 | Smallest input accepted from the right stick |
Keep both Target Aim Assist and ADS Aim Assist enabled when you begin testing. Changing several variables together makes it impossible to tell which adjustment helped. Use the baseline long enough to develop a feel for it, then alter one setting at a time.
Step-by-step tracking calibration
- Enter a practice area or private match. Use a setting where you can repeat the same movement without an opponent’s unpredictable behavior obscuring the result.
- Start with the baseline. Set 1.65 horizontal and vertical sensitivity, 0.95–1.00 ADS, Dynamic response, both aim-assist options on and minimum deadzones of 3.
- Check neutral-stick behavior. Stand still and watch whether the reticle or character moves without input. Unwanted movement indicates stick drift, not a need for more sensitivity.
- Test a fixed point. Strafe while keeping your reticle on a stationary mark. This reveals whether your own movement and camera corrections are smooth before moving-target testing.
- Track at multiple ranges. Follow a moving target at close, medium and long distance. A value that feels excellent in a close fight may be too twitchy for a distant target.
- Change only one variable. Keep a short note of the old and new value. Play several matches with the change before judging it; immediate impressions are affected by unfamiliar muscle memory.
- Repeat until the weakness is specific. Adjust main sensitivity for turning problems, ADS multiplier for scoped-tracking problems and deadzone only for drift or unwanted input.
Diagnosing the most common problems
The reticle overshoots targets
When you repeatedly pass the target and have to correct back, lower horizontal and vertical sensitivity together by a small increment. Make the same-size change to both axes first so your movement does not become lopsided. If overshooting happens only while aiming down sights, leave the main values alone and reduce ADS slightly.

Turning and target switches feel too slow
If you cannot complete a close-range turn or move from one opponent to another quickly enough, raise horizontal and vertical sensitivity gradually. Higher sensitivity improves turn speed, but it also magnifies small errors. Test the new value against both a rapid target switch and a long, steady track before keeping it.

Hip-fire feels good but ADS tracking is unstable
Reduce the ADS multiplier toward 0.95 or another small step below your current value. This slows sight movement while preserving your hip-fire response. Do not simultaneously change the response curve or deadzone, or you will lose a clear comparison.
ADS feels sluggish
Move the multiplier back toward 1.00 if your sight cannot keep up with a strafing target. Sluggishness can also come from an excessively high deadzone, which delays the first part of a stick movement.
The controller drifts when untouched
Raise the affected stick’s minimum deadzone only enough to stop the drift. A larger deadzone filters more unintended movement, but it creates a wider area in which small intentional inputs are ignored. Excessive deadzone can make the reticle feel delayed and can undermine close tracking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy deadzone is a precision-versus-drift decision
A minimum deadzone is the amount of stick movement the game ignores around the neutral position. The SCUF baseline uses 3 for both sticks. That is appropriate when the controller holds its center reliably. If the reticle moves by itself, increase the relevant minimum value in small steps until the movement stops.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Deadzone is not a substitute for sensitivity. Raising sensitivity will not cure drift, and lowering sensitivity will not remove the delay caused by an oversized deadzone. Treat the two settings separately: sensitivity controls how fast accepted input moves the camera; deadzone controls when input begins to count.
Response curve and muscle memory
The response curve determines how physical stick displacement is translated into in-game camera speed. Dynamic is the beta guide’s starting choice, but the final MW4 curve names and behavior had not been confirmed in the available official material. If Activision changes the available curves or their tuning, recheck the setting rather than assuming the beta label behaves identically at launch.
Whichever curve you choose, consistency matters. Frequent switching makes every setting feel unfamiliar and can be mistaken for poor aim assist. Keep a configuration for several matches, test the same ranges and movement patterns, and change only the variable linked to the problem you observed.
What is confirmed about MW4 and what is provisional
Activision identifies Modern Warfare 4 as an Infinity Ward first-person shooter scheduled for October 23, 2026. The listed platforms are Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision describes multiplayer as grounded, precise combat with fluid movement.

The publisher had not, in the material available for this guide, published final MW4 aim-assist type names, strength values, deadzone scales or recommended sensitivity numbers. A dated compilation of Activision statements reports the beta note: “For Weekend 2, we’ve made adjustments to aim assist to reduce its impact.” The same note says that change was not the exact tuning the team wanted.
That means beta behavior should not be treated as a launch guarantee. Check the first official launch patch notes and the live controller menu after October 23 before treating any value as permanent. The game is advertised with more than 800 customization options across graphics, gameplay, input devices, interface and other categories, so labels and ranges can change as the live build is tuned.
Choosing between different setup priorities
| Priority | Useful direction | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fast close-range turns | Raise main sensitivity gradually; keep ADS near 1.00 | More risk of overshooting and recoil corrections |
| Long-range tracking stability | Use a lower ADS multiplier, such as 0.95, while retaining controlled main sensitivity | Slower sight movement during rapid target switches |
| Maximum drift tolerance | Increase the affected stick’s deadzone only until drift stops | More initial input delay and less fine control |
| Balanced beta starting point | 1.65/1.65, 0.95–1.00 ADS, Dynamic, both aim-assist options on, deadzones 3 | Requires personal adjustment for controller condition and play style |
Use these as decision axes rather than as competing “best settings.” Turn speed versus precision, hip-fire versus ADS control, drift tolerance versus input latency and close-range switching versus long-range stability are real trade-offs; improving one can weaken another.
Questions to answer before changing settings
- Does aim assist help tracking? It can make small target-following corrections easier when your reticle is already near the target, but you must still supply the aim and movement.
- Should sensitivity be higher because aim assist is enabled? Not automatically. Assistance may let some players raise sensitivity, but higher values also increase over-correction. Test the change rather than assuming it will improve performance.
- What deadzone should you use? Start at 3 on both sticks if there is no drift. Increase only the affected stick enough to stop unwanted movement.
- Are the beta settings final? No. The 1.65 baseline and related values come from a dated SCUF guide, while Activision had not published final aim-assist types, strengths, scales or recommendations in the available material.
- How long should you test a change? Keep one adjustment for several matches and repeat the same close-, medium- and long-range tracking tests before deciding whether it helped.
The Bottom Line
Use 1.65/1.65 sensitivity, 0.95–1.00 ADS, Dynamic response, both aim-assist settings on and deadzones of 3 as a measured beta starting point. Tune one variable at a time, raise deadzone only for drift, and verify the live settings and patch notes after MW4 launches on October 23, 2026.
