The important distinction is that MW4 multiplayer and Warzone do not use the same carry-forward rules. Regular Prestige preserves your Create-a-Class unlocks while restarting your level. Classic Prestige relocks Create-a-Class progression in return for faster XP earning and exclusive rewards. In Warzone, selected Operators, Operator Skins, Weapon Blueprints, and legacy weapons remain available, but legacy guns are deliberately less flexible than MW4 weapons.

What launches with Modern Warfare 4
Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone release for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, 2026. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not supported. A newer console or a supported PC is therefore a prerequisite before you make any progression decision.

There is no evidence that a menu option called “Start Fresh” deletes anything. In practical terms, starting fresh means building your MW4 multiplayer progression and loadouts around MW4 systems instead of making older Warzone content the center of your play.

How MW4 multiplayer Prestige works
Prestige is the multiplayer decision that most directly changes your progression path. It is an in-game reset loop, not an Activision-account reset and not a deletion of purchased Warzone cosmetics.
Regular Prestige: preserve your class-building progress
Regular Prestige restarts your player level at Level 1 while keeping your Create-a-Class content unlocked. The official description presents it as the flexible option for players who want to maintain their unlocked loadout-building tools while still earning Prestige rewards and progression milestones.
This is the better fit when you want the familiar class system available immediately after each Prestige cycle. You still repeat level progression, but the reset does not force you to relock the Create-a-Class content you already earned.

Classic Prestige: trade access for faster progression rewards
Classic Prestige relocks Create-a-Class progression. In exchange, it provides increased XP earn rates and exclusive rewards. No official numeric XP multiplier has been published, so treat “faster” as a stated benefit rather than a specific percentage.
Classic Prestige suits players who enjoy repeating an unlock chase, want its exclusive rewards, and are willing to rebuild access to class content after each reset. It is a deliberate progression challenge, not a way to erase your account history.

Prestige does not delete your account
Neither Prestige type is described as deleting your Activision account, removing your Warzone purchases, or wiping your account history. The reset applies to the multiplayer progression systems identified above. Your choice should therefore be based on how you want to play MW4, not on fear that Prestige will remove your broader Call of Duty collection.
What Warzone Carry Forward includes
Warzone Season 1 preserves a defined set of content from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7. The supported categories are Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints. This is meaningful continuity for players who bought cosmetics or built a collection across those releases, but it is narrower than a complete transfer of every old system.

How legacy weapons work
Old guns are not presented as ordinary MW4 weapons in the standard weapon ecosystem. To select one, use the Legacy tab in Warzone. Each legacy base weapon is supplied in a five-attachment version. That gives you a defined version of the gun, but not the broad tuning and assembly freedom associated with a current MW4 weapon.
Legacy weapons do not retain Gunsmith functionality or old custom loadouts. You should expect to select the available legacy version rather than rebuild every historical attachment combination. This is the central trade-off of Carry Forward: your familiar weapon remains usable, but its old progression depth does not come with it.
The September 24 correction matters
The September 24, 2026 Warzone article corrected an earlier error that had described legacy Weapon Camos as available. The corrected scope names Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints from the four specified releases. Do not choose Carry Forward on the assumption that your legacy camo library will appear in Warzone Season 1.

Carry Forward versus starting fresh
The two paths differ less in account ownership than in what you prioritize during play. Carry Forward keeps older choices available in Warzone. Starting fresh puts MW4’s own weapons, classes, and progression loop first.

Who should choose Carry Forward
Collectors who value purchased cosmetics
If your enjoyment comes from using Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints you acquired across recent Call of Duty releases, Carry Forward has clear value. The point is continuity: those specified categories remain part of your Warzone choices instead of being confined to their original games.
Warzone-first players
Warzone regulars benefit most because the carry-forward rules are built around Warzone Season 1. You can continue selecting eligible Operators and skins, and you can keep legacy guns in your available pool through the Legacy tab. This lets you preserve a recognizable collection while learning the new season.
Players who want optionality rather than a clean break
Carry Forward does not require you to use an old weapon every match. It simply keeps the supported content available. You can run MW4 weapons for most games and switch to a legacy blueprint or gun when you specifically want it. The limitation is that the legacy option is narrower than the original experience, so optionality should not be confused with full restoration.
Who should start fresh in MW4
Multiplayer-focused players
If MW4 multiplayer is your main reason for buying the game, a fresh MW4-centered approach keeps your attention on its own weapons, Create-a-Class progression, and Prestige loop. You avoid designing your routine around Warzone’s Legacy tab and the fixed five-attachment format.

Players who prefer uncluttered loadouts
A large historical collection can be useful, but it can also make a new game feel like an extension of several older systems. Starting fresh means choosing from MW4’s current equipment first, learning its balance and class structure, and treating older content as optional rather than foundational.
Players willing to repeat the unlock chase
Classic Prestige is especially compatible with a reset-oriented mindset. You relock Create-a-Class progression, earn XP at the increased rate described by the official announcement, and pursue exclusive rewards. If repeating that loop sounds satisfying rather than frustrating, a fresh progression identity may fit better than preserving every old convenience.
How to make the decision at launch
- Confirm your platform. MW4 supports Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. If you are on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, the game is not supported.
- Use the Activision account that owns your progression. Battle Pass progress and unlocked content follow the linked Activision account across linked platforms. Sign in with the same account before judging that content is missing.
- Choose your multiplayer reset philosophy. Select Regular Prestige if preserving Create-a-Class access matters more than the fastest stated XP earning. Select Classic Prestige if you accept relocks for increased XP earning and exclusive rewards.
- Build your initial MW4 classes from current content. Even Carry Forward players should treat MW4 weapons as the normal starting point for multiplayer. Legacy Warzone equipment is a separate continuity feature.
- Find older Warzone guns in the Legacy tab. Do not expect them beside ordinary MW4 weapons. Select the available five-attachment version and plan around the absence of the older Gunsmith and custom-loadout systems.
- Check the actual category before assuming a cosmetic transferred. Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints are the stated categories. Legacy Weapon Camos were specifically removed from the corrected description.
Account, Battle Pass, and COD Points rules
Battle Pass progress and unlocked content are tied to your Activision account and appear on linked platforms. This is separate from the platform where you launch the game, so a missing Battle Pass unlock is first an account-linking issue to investigate.
COD Points are more restrictive. COD Points bought or earned through the Battle Pass can only be spent on the platform account where they were bought or earned. Content purchased with COD Points is generally usable on linked platform accounts, subject to platform-specific exceptions. In other words, content access can follow the Activision account while the currency balance remains tied to the earning or purchasing platform.

Common problems and the correct interpretation
An old gun is missing from the normal weapon list
Check the Legacy tab in Warzone. Legacy weapons are not promised as ordinary entries in the MW4 weapon list.
Your old Gunsmith build cannot be recreated
That is an announced limitation, not necessarily an account error. Legacy weapons do not retain Gunsmith functionality or prior custom loadouts, and each base weapon is provided in a five-attachment version.
A legacy camo does not appear
The corrected September 24, 2026 description does not include legacy Weapon Camos. Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints are the categories explicitly identified for carry-forward.

Your Battle Pass unlock is absent on another platform
Verify that both platforms use the same linked Activision account. Battle Pass progress and unlocked content follow that account; signing into a different account can make legitimate content appear missing.
Your COD Points are not available after switching platforms
Check the platform where the points were bought or earned. COD Points remain spendable only on that platform account, even though COD-Point-purchased content is generally usable on linked accounts subject to exceptions.
What the earlier MWII-to-MWIII model does—and does not—tell us
The earlier Modern Warfare II-to-Modern Warfare III Carry Forward model transferred a broader mix of weapons, attachments, Operators, cosmetics, and weapon progression. It also warned that removed gameplay items and Wartracks could be excluded and that there was no carry-back.
That history explains why players may expect a complete transfer, but it is not a promise about MW4. MW4’s documented scope is narrower: selected Operators, Operator Skins, Weapon Blueprints, and legacy weapons with specific restrictions. Do not assume that every attachment, camo, progression level, or old feature will follow simply because an earlier transition carried more.
Bottom-line decision
Choose Carry Forward when your Warzone identity and purchased collection matter most, accepting the Legacy tab, fixed five-attachment weapons, and missing old Gunsmith/custom-loadout support. Choose a fresh MW4-centered path when multiplayer progression, current weapons, and uncluttered classes matter more than preserving old weapon functionality. Regular Prestige is the middle ground for players who want a level reset without relocking Create-a-Class; Classic Prestige is the deliberate reset for faster XP earning and exclusive rewards.
