The Modern Warfare 4 launch patch is the October 21, 2026 build prepared for the worldwide release on October 23. It delivers the major weapon, movement, spawn, interface and audio changes, plus fixes for hundreds of reported problems across Multiplayer, DMZ and Campaign. A separate October 25 update added more fixes and balance adjustments; those changes are listed separately below so they are not confused with the launch baseline.
What did the Modern Warfare 4 launch patch change?
The launch build overhauled weapon balance, reorganized perks, revised movement and spawning, expanded audio feedback, and added interface improvements. It also fixed server crashes, progression errors, DMZ objective blockers, visual glitches and Campaign progression problems. Infinity Ward summarized the scope as “Several hundred bugs. Killed dead.”

Activision’s worldwide launch on October 23 includes a new Campaign, DMZ extraction gameplay in Hajin, 20 Multiplayer maps, 33 weapons, 17 Killstreaks and more than a dozen Multiplayer modes. The launch map groups are:

Returning modes are Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free-for-All, Frontline, Search & Destroy, Gunfight, Gun Game and related playlists. How did the launch patch rebalance weapons and progression?
Weapon balance
Infinity Ward’s stated goal was to make weapon choice meaningful rather than mandatory. Submachine guns are more effective from close to mid-range, while powerful one-hit-kill weapons were tempered through flinch and damage tuning. Every weapon received a broader balance pass instead of a single isolated nerf.
Advanced Weapon Stats and attachments
Advanced Weapon Stats were added so players can inspect more detailed performance information. Attachments were tuned for flexibility and balance, and a shared attachment unlock now carries across every compatible weapon instead of requiring a separate unlock on each gun.

Weapon Prestige returns. Prestiging a weapon locks that weapon’s attachments and puts it back onto a classic level-unlock path, but shared attachments already unlocked remain usable on other compatible weapons.

What changed for perks and movement?
- Perks were redistributed into three categories.
- Battle Hardened now counters Flash, Concussion and Screamer Mine effects more effectively.
- Resupply recharges sooner.
- Blood Rush makes Tactical Sprint trigger by default when the sprint key is pressed.
- Tactical Sprint is no longer a universal default ability; it is tied to Blood Rush.
- First-person and third-person movement mismatches were corrected, and transition behavior was adjusted.
How were spawns, Killstreaks and equipment adjusted?
Spawn logic was iterated around player separation, squad spawning and more predictable Hardpoint locations. The launch roster contains 17 Killstreaks and introduces the Smart Streak Meter, which rewards objective actions as well as conventional streak play.
UAV health increased from 100 to 150. Wheelson received revised pathing and target-selection logic. Flash and Concussion equipment have slightly shorter range and duration, reducing their ability to dominate an entire engagement.
What changed in optics and the interface?
- Optic Rail Placement changes the sight picture cosmetically.
- Thermal optics now use custom reticle effects.
- Pre-game countdowns were shortened or removed.
- Map pre-loading begins earlier.
- Splash blur was reduced.
- Gunny tutorials were repositioned and made less intrusive.
- Gunsmith Weapon Builds are saved manually when leaving Gunsmith, while edits made during a match save automatically.
What audio improvements are in the launch build?
The patch adds destruction audio and restores mounted-turret audio. Heartbeat Sensors no longer become muted underwater. Text-message cues were added, and dropouts affecting Assault Drone and Bomb Glider audio were fixed. Chopper Gunner and Gunship mixes were adjusted, while Nuke audio was improved and its dropouts corrected.

Were weapon and Campaign issues fixed?
Yes. The Firing Range no longer incorrectly reports a 0.00 time-to-kill value for the Rezi 12 Shotgun. Melee and Launcher weapons now receive weapon-level icons. In the Campaign, the Hotel sequence of the Counter Attack mission no longer blocks progression.
What changed in the separate October 25 post-launch update?
The official notes page is a living document, and the October 25 entry should be read as a follow-up rather than part of the October 21 launch list.

Activision’s October 23 tracker still lists four unresolved areas: Multiplayer loadout saves fail for some players; Combat Record and Leaderboard statistics may not display even though the game is tracking them; some Xbox-on-PC players encounter a COD Home launch-button problem; and DMZ Operator Prestige can fail.

The DMZ Prestige issue has an officially noted workaround that has worked for some players: equip Rare weapons with only three attachment slots before attempting the Prestige action. It is a workaround, not a confirmation that the underlying error is fixed.
Is Modern Warfare 4 included with Game Pass?
No. Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone release and was not included with Game Pass at launch. Players must purchase the game separately, and the correct platform, edition and physical-versus-digital format should be confirmed before buying.
What should returning players check first after installing?
- Open Gunsmith and verify that saved builds contain the intended attachments after the manual-save change.
- Review Advanced Weapon Stats before settling on a loadout, especially if you previously relied on a one-hit-kill weapon.
- Select Blood Rush if Tactical Sprint is part of your movement setup.
- Run one Multiplayer match and one DMZ deployment to confirm that completion events and After-Action Report XP are recording normally.
- If DMZ Operator Prestige fails, try the Rare-weapon, three-attachment-slot workaround while the issue remains under investigation.

Does Optic Rail Placement change an optic’s combat performance?
No performance change is described for the launch feature; it changes the sight picture cosmetically. The October 25 follow-up corrected visual problems associated with that placement system.
When are Infected and Possession available?
They were announced for the week after launch rather than the initial October 23 rotation. The launch notes do not give a more precise release time in the material available here.
Is there a workaround for DMZ Operator Prestige failing?
Activision says some players have succeeded by equipping Rare weapons that have only three attachment slots. Because the tracker still lists the failure, treat this as a temporary workaround rather than a permanent fix.
