If a decision such as Following Orders resets, first leave the campaign, return to the main menu, and fully restart the game. Then reproduce the choice once from a clean launch. If the reset remains, replay the mission through Campaign Mission Select when available, check for any overwrite warning, and report the behavior to Activision with precise mission and platform details.
The restart step is an officially recommended response to a currently listed Xbox-on-PC campaign access problem, not a guaranteed repair for a decision flag. Activision says unlisted problems should be submitted through the Modern Warfare 4 Bug Report form. The workflow below separates confirmed support guidance from steps that are sensible diagnostics but are not documented as a direct fix.

What is known about choices that reset
Activision Support’s current Known Issues page, checked October 19, 2026, does not list a defect in which campaign order or moral choices fail to persist. The only directly related item is a missing Campaign launch button for some Xbox-on-PC installations. Activision says that issue was addressed and tells affected players to restart the game. That notice does not confirm that the same restart repairs a choice that has already reverted.
There is also no published statistic showing how often order-choice failures occur. Treat a reset as an unconfirmed save-state problem until you can reproduce it consistently. Record what happens after a complete restart rather than assuming that a visual change at a checkpoint means the campaign has permanently stored the decision.

Use this troubleshooting sequence first
1. Exit cleanly and restart the game
- Leave the mission and return to the game’s main menu instead of immediately selecting another checkpoint.
- Close the game completely on your platform. Do not rely on suspending it or leaving it in a quick-resume state.
- Launch the game again, open Campaign, and load the affected mission or the latest available campaign state.
- Make the same order or moral choice once. Return to the menu and reopen the campaign to see whether the result remains.
This test matters because it distinguishes a temporary display or session problem from a state that fails to survive a new launch. Activision’s wording for the listed Xbox-on-PC issue is: “If you’re still experiencing this, please try restarting the game.” That is the clearest official action currently available, although Activision has not said that it resets a particular choice record.
2. Reproduce the decision and write down the conditions
On the clean launch, avoid changing several variables at once. Note the platform, edition, mission name, checkpoint, exact dialogue or order selected, and the time the choice was made. Check the result after returning to the menu and again after restarting. If other campaign progress, such as mission completion or collectibles, also rolls back, record that separately; it may indicate a broader save or synchronization problem rather than a single decision flag.
3. Replay through Campaign Mission Select
When the affected mission is available, open Campaign Mission Select and replay it from there. A current guide identifies Following Orders as replayable. Select the mission, reach the decision, and inspect the game’s counters or completion indicators before accepting any prompt that could replace existing progress.

The exact relationship between a replay and the original campaign choice is not officially documented. The available guidance does not establish whether replaying changes only the latest checkpoint, overwrites the original decision, creates a separate completion record, or leaves the first outcome intact. Do not assume that a replay automatically rewrites the story. If the game displays an overwrite warning, stop and read it before confirming; if no warning appears, that absence is not proof that the earlier result is protected.
4. Test once more after a full restart
After the replay, return to the menu, close the game, and launch it again. Confirm whether the chosen outcome, mission counters, and any visible completion markers survive. A result that appears only during the replay but disappears after relaunch is materially different from a result that persists through a complete restart.
How to interpret replay results
| Action | What it can tell you | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Return to the main menu and relaunch | Whether the current session’s decision survives a new game launch | That the underlying choice flag has been repaired |
| Replay from Campaign Mission Select | Whether the mission can be reached again and whether the game presents a new result or counter | Whether the replay overwrites the original outcome or only changes a checkpoint |
| Check mission and collectible counters | Whether visible completion data changed alongside the decision | Which internal save object controls those counters |
| Repeat after restarting | Whether the behavior is reproducible across sessions | Whether cloud, profile, checkpoint, or mission-completion storage is responsible |
| Submit a bug report | Gives Activision the information needed to investigate an unlisted symptom | A guaranteed immediate fix or a published response date |
Use the comparison above to describe the outcome precisely. For example, “the choice displayed correctly until the next launch, while mission completion remained intact” is more useful than saying only that the save failed.

Following Orders: what players can safely try
Players specifically report that the Following Orders choice does not stick and ask whether replaying the mission changes the outcome. The mission is reported as replayable from Campaign Mission Select, so replay is the appropriate supported way to test the decision again when the mission is available in your menu.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Campaign Mission Select and choose Following Orders if it is listed.
- Use the same checkpoint or the earliest checkpoint that reliably presents the decision.
- Choose the intended order and allow the scene to finish rather than quitting during dialogue or a transition.
- Check mission counters and any completion screen for a change.
- Look for an overwrite prompt before confirming a return to the campaign.
- Restart the game and verify the result a second time.
Because Activision has not published save-system semantics for this mission, do not promise that the replay will overwrite the first outcome. If your purpose is to preserve the original playthrough, consider documenting the existing counters and outcome before confirming a replay. If your purpose is to change the outcome, document the old state so you can tell whether anything actually changed.
PC stability checks when a reset accompanies crashes or glitches
General PC stability work is relevant when the apparent reset occurs alongside crashes, freezes, corrupted visuals, failed loading, or an interrupted shader build. These steps come from standard stability guidance and are not a confirmed repair for the campaign decision itself.

- Update the game and the platform client to their current versions.
- Install the latest graphics driver supported by your GPU.
- Close overlays, recording or capture applications, and input-remapping tools before launching the campaign.
- Allow shader compilation to finish before beginning the mission. Interrupting that process can contribute to instability, but it has not been shown to change a stored choice.
- Reduce rendering load if the game is crashing or becoming unstable: lower demanding graphics settings and test again with a stable configuration.
- After making one change, replay the decision and perform a full restart so you can identify whether the symptom changed.
If the game crashes during the test, use Activision’s separate PC Crash Report path as well as the campaign bug form. A crash report should describe the crash; a campaign report should describe the decision and what remained or disappeared after relaunch.
Xbox-on-PC campaign launch problem
Some Xbox-on-PC installations have been listed with a missing Campaign launch button. Activision says that issue was addressed and instructs players who still see it to restart the game. This is an access problem, not an official explanation for a choice that reverts after a mission. If you cannot open Campaign at all, apply the restart instruction first; if Campaign opens but a decision later resets, report that separate behavior with the mission and choice details.
When to stop replaying and file a report
Submit an Activision Modern Warfare 4 Bug Report when the choice still resets after a clean launch, one controlled replay, and a second full restart. Activision’s Known Issues page says: “If you don’t see an issue that you’re experiencing below, you can report it using the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Bug Report form.”
Best Value
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 - Standard Edition
Include the following in one report:
- Platform and edition, including whether the game is running through Xbox on PC or another PC platform.
- Mission name and the checkpoint used.
- The exact order, dialogue, or moral choice selected.
- Whether the choice appeared to apply before leaving the mission.
- Whether it survived a return to the main menu and a complete game restart.
- Whether mission completion, collectibles, counters, or other campaign progress also reverted.
- The approximate time and date of each attempt.
- Any error message, crash, freeze, missing button, or loading problem.
- Whether overlays, recording software, or input-remapping tools were running during the failure.
Use one report for the decision-persistence symptom and the PC Crash Report path when a crash is also involved. Separate, reproducible descriptions help support distinguish a campaign-state problem from a general stability failure.
How campaign decisions fit into the story
Windows Central describes Modern Warfare 4 as having 16 story missions in a mostly linear campaign that takes roughly six to eight hours, depending on player skill and how much time is spent searching for secrets. That is a review description, not an official specification of the save system. The same coverage says some decisions can affect scenes or character outcomes while the overall narrative remains largely linear.
That structure explains why a choice can matter without creating a completely different campaign route. A changed scene or character result is not, by itself, evidence that every later mission branch has been rewritten. Conversely, seeing the same broad story progression after a replay does not prove that the decision failed to save; the effect may be limited to a scene or outcome.
What has not been documented
No current source establishes whether order choices are stored in a separate local profile, a checkpoint record, a cloud-save object, or a mission-completion flag. The available information also does not establish whether replaying a mission overwrites the original choice, preserves both outcomes, or affects only the replay session. Avoid deleting files, changing profile data, or claiming a specific cloud-sync procedure unless Activision publishes instructions for it; those actions could remove useful evidence or other progress.
There is likewise no confirmed, choice-specific workaround beyond restarting, controlled mission replay, and reporting the result. PC updates, driver changes, overlay shutdown, shader completion, and lower rendering load are reasonable when instability is present, but they should be presented as stability checks rather than a guaranteed decision-save fix.
Practical decision tree
- Campaign will not open: fully restart the game. If the missing Campaign button persists on Xbox on PC, document the installation and report it.
- Campaign opens, but one choice resets: reproduce it once after a clean launch, then replay the mission through Campaign Mission Select if available.
- Replay changes a visible result: check counters and warnings, return to the menu, restart, and verify again.
- Reset occurs with crashes or freezes: perform the PC stability checks, then retest from a clean launch.
- Reset persists without a listed issue: file the Modern Warfare 4 Bug Report with the complete timeline and platform information.
Until Activision documents a specific defect or save procedure, the reliable conclusion is limited: restart and controlled replay can test the state, but neither is an officially guaranteed way to repair an order-choice flag.
