Modern Warfare 4’s new South Korean squad provides the campaign’s human center, making its inexperienced soldiers more emotionally immediate than the established icons Ghost and Captain Price. The game splits its story between Private Park Hyun Jun’s unit fighting a North Korean invasion and Price’s off-book pursuit of a personal enemy. Price still carries the series’ biggest action set pieces, but Park, Jay, Cho, Moon, West and Dunn must discover who they are while under fire. That vulnerability, teamwork and connection to home give their missions stakes that the veteran operators’ familiar reputations cannot match.
What is Modern Warfare 4’s campaign about?
Activision describes a dual campaign set during a full-scale North Korean invasion of South Korea. One strand follows Private Park Hyun Jun and his South Korean marine squad as front lines collapse; the other follows Captain Price conducting a personal, unauthorized war. The official product information lists an October 23, 2026 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

This is not simply another globe-spanning mission tour: the invasion is happening where Park’s soldiers live, and the squad is learning its roles as the crisis unfolds.
That structure explains the character verdict. Price’s missions are built around continuity, betrayal and revenge. Park’s missions are built around people trying to survive their first real war together.

Who are the new Modern Warfare 4 characters?
Private Park Hyun Jun
Park is the frontline South Korean viewpoint and the closest thing the campaign has to a new central protagonist. He gives players an entry point into the invasion without the accumulated legend surrounding Price or Ghost. His perspective is defined by responsibility arriving faster than experience.
Park, Jay, Cho and Moon
These conscripted South Korean marines form the core of Park’s squad. Their lack of battlefield experience is a deliberate dramatic advantage: uncertainty, fear and mistakes are visible parts of their behavior rather than backstory that has already been resolved. They have to earn confidence and coordinate under pressure.
West and Dunn
West and Dunn are American Marines embedded with the Korean unit. Narrative Director Jeff Negus describes the setup as a “fish out of water” and culture-collision dynamic. Their outsider position creates friction and conversation while also forcing the group to translate different military experiences into a working team.
Valeria Garza
Garza is not part of Park’s squad. She is an uneasy partner for Price, presented as a pragmatic ally against a larger threat. In the campaign trailer she asks, “Why sit on the high ground and watch the world burn when we can fight fire with fire?” Her role reinforces the darker, morally compromised direction of Price’s storyline.

The Archer
The Archer is the antagonist linked to an unknown weapon of war. The limited information keeps the threat deliberately opaque, while the invasion gives the new squad an immediate, comprehensible danger before every mystery is explained.
Why do Park’s squad and the other new characters feel more compelling?
They stay close to the player
Associate Design Director Alex Norris says the developers wanted to put characters “next to you on the front lines.” That means squadmates have gameplay responsibilities, not just radio dialogue or cinematic entrances. Their decisions affect how a mission feels moment to moment, so players spend more time responding to them than observing them.
Fear has consequences
Veteran operators can be impressive, but their competence often removes uncertainty. Park’s conscripts are visibly frightened and unsure of themselves. Their hesitation creates emotional friction: a breach, retreat or rescue is also a test of whether the squad can function when training and confidence run out.
Personality emerges through cooperation
The Korean and American Marines cannot rely on identical experience or assumptions. They have to communicate across different cultural and military positions, allowing character to emerge through disagreement, adjustment and mutual dependence instead of exposition alone. Negus says the team aimed to make the characters “three-dimensional” and “flawed in the right ways.”

The setting gives every mission personal weight
Park’s unit is fighting for its home while the invasion is underway. South Korea is not just a backdrop for an operator fantasy; it determines what the squad is protecting and what failure costs. That setting-specific pressure makes even small acts of teamwork feel consequential.
The campaign gives them room to own the story
PC Gamer reports that more than half of the six-hour campaign follows the young South Korean Marines. The reviewer called the new, non-elite faces the main reason this was the most enjoyable Call of Duty campaign they had played in years. Structurally, the emphasis matters: the new squad is not a brief prologue before the familiar heroes reclaim the narrative.

Ghost and Price remain effective precisely because players already know what they represent. The new squad is effective because players do not know what it will become.
| Comparison | Park’s squad | Ghost and Price |
|---|---|---|
| Player proximity | Fights beside the player as an active unit with mission responsibilities. | Arrive with established roles, reputations and iconography. |
| Vulnerability | Conscripts are inexperienced, frightened and still learning. | Veteran operators are defined by competence and history. |
| Ensemble chemistry | Korean and American Marines must negotiate differences and depend on one another. | Ghost, Gaz and Price operate inside a familiar network of loyalties and judgments. |
| Setting | The invasion threatens the squad’s own country and communities. | The pursuit is a more detached manhunt and revenge operation. |
| Agency | The group discovers its identity under pressure. | The characters’ identities are largely established before the campaign begins. |
| Emotional payoff | Trust and competence have to be earned during the story. | The drama comes from testing or breaking relationships players already understand. |
Ghost and Gaz are tasked with capturing or killing their former captain after Price goes rogue, making them pursuers and moral checks on him. The developers have said Price’s choices in Modern Warfare III put him somewhere he cannot simply return from. That continuity gives the legacy arc weight, but it also makes its direction feel preloaded.

PC Gamer found Price’s parallel missions less interesting and noted that he largely leaves the story’s back half without intersecting the newer protagonists. TechRadar similarly frames the contrast as Park’s camaraderie against Price’s revenge-driven moral decline. In other words, Price supplies the franchise mythology while Park’s unit supplies discovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is Price a fugitive, and does Ghost hunt him?
Price goes rogue after the consequences of his Modern Warfare III decisions, turning his personal campaign into an off-book war. Ghost and Gaz pursue him because he was once their captain and now represents both a threat and a moral crisis for the people who served with him.

This is why the legacy storyline feels darker than a standard hero mission. The question is not whether Price can win another operation; it is whether his choices have taken him beyond the point where his old allies can justify following him.
Is Modern Warfare 4 worth buying for the campaign?
If you want a campaign centered on recognizable operators and large-scale spectacle, Price still offers that. If you want characters who change in response to danger, the South Korean squad is the stronger reason to play. More than half of a reported six-hour campaign is devoted to those young Marines, so their arc is substantial rather than an optional side story.

The most accurate expectation is a split experience: Price provides continuity and high-impact set pieces, while Park, Jay, Cho, Moon, West and Dunn carry the emotional investment. Calling the new characters “better” is an editorial judgment, not an official ranking, but the campaign’s structure strongly favors their immediacy.
What does Valeria Garza add to the story?
Garza gives Price a partner who is useful without being comfortably heroic. Her willingness to fight a larger threat by “fighting fire with fire” mirrors the campaign’s interest in compromised choices and prevents the Price missions from becoming a simple good-versus-evil chase.

The Archer is associated with an unknown weapon of war, but the available campaign material does not explain its full capability, origin or strategic purpose. That uncertainty is part of the setup rather than evidence that the antagonist is already fully defined.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Private Park the only character players control?
No. The campaign is deliberately divided between Park’s South Korean marine perspective and Price’s separate off-book missions. The balance favors Park’s unit, with more than half of the reported six-hour story following the young Korean Marines.
How does the Korean setting change the campaign’s tone?
The invasion places the squad’s families, communities and national survival behind every operation. Missions therefore carry local consequences instead of functioning only as stops on an international operator tour.
Are Ghost and Gaz still allies in Modern Warfare 4?
They are aligned in pursuing Price after he goes rogue, but their role is closer to that of pursuers and moral checks than a conventional hero team. Their loyalty is tested by what Price has become.
What platforms can run Modern Warfare 4?
The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The campaign information does not establish feature or performance differences between those editions.
