For the current Monarchs at Play demo, start at your display’s normal resolution with the game’s existing defaults. If movement is uneven, change one control at a time. When the slowdown is GPU-limited and your build actually exposes resolution or render scale, lower it incrementally, then check that map labels and interface text remain readable. If an effects or shadow control is present, test one lower step only after the resolution experiment.
This is guidance for the downloadable demo, not a final-game preset. The full game is still marked Coming soon as of October 30, 2026, and no inspected official source publishes a verified best-settings combination, game-specific FPS result, or exhaustive graphics menu. You can download the demo from the official Steam listing.

| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal resolution with demo defaults | First launch and a sharp image | Use the display’s native resolution and the controls already present in the demo | Windows and macOS demo | Nov 2026 |
| Lower resolution or render scale, if offered | A GPU-limited system with uneven camera movement | Reduce incrementally; no game-specific optimum is published | Any platform where the installed build shows the control | Nov 2026 |
| One-step effects or shadow reduction, if offered | Slowdowns that persist after a resolution change | Only controls visible in your build are confirmed; cloud shadows were added, but a toggle is not documented | Any platform where the installed build shows the control | Nov 2026 |
| Windows 11 High performance GPU preference | Hybrid laptops selecting the integrated GPU | Settings > System > Display > Graphics > app > Options > High performance | Windows 11 with multiple GPUs | Nov 2026 |
The rows are ordered from the safest baseline to more targeted troubleshooting. They are not measured presets: the available controls, driver behavior and frame rate can change with a demo update.
What can you actually configure in the Monarchs at Play demo?
The reliable starting point is the demo’s current menu, not a presumed Low, Medium or High profile. The inspected official material does not publish a complete graphics-options list, a tested preset, or GPU-by-GPU FPS figures. Therefore, settings such as texture quality, shadows, FSR, DLSS, frame generation, V-Sync and a render-scale slider must not be treated as confirmed Monarchs at Play controls unless you can see them in the build installed on your computer.

The developer’s July graphics update mentioned new cloud shadows. That establishes a visual feature, not an adjustable shadow-quality switch or a known performance cost. Treat every control as conditional: read its exact label, make one change, and compare the same scene before changing anything else.
The product is also moving. A September 22 developer announcement introduced the demo, and October updates changed its scope. The Steam page still marks the full release as Coming soon. Advice that depends on a particular menu, renderer, map or build should be revisited after patches.

What hardware and operating-system requirements are published?
Steam’s minimum specifications describe the lowest supported configuration, not a smooth-performance guarantee. They do not establish a target frame rate or tell you which visual settings to select.
| Platform | Minimum operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or later | Intel i5-6300U or higher | 8 GB RAM | Intel HD Graphics 520 or higher | 8 GB available |
| macOS | macOS 13.0 | Intel Core i5 or Apple Silicon | 8 GB RAM | Metal 3-compatible graphics | 2 GB available |
These are the current figures on the official listing checked October 30, 2026. Recommended specifications are not substantively filled in there, so there is no defensible “recommended GPU” or guaranteed-FPS tier to publish. An Intel HD Graphics 520 meeting the Windows line means the demo is within the stated minimum, not that a large map will maintain a particular cadence.
How should I establish a useful baseline?
Record the conditions before touching a setting. This prevents a different map, camera angle or demo build from being mistaken for an improvement.
- Identify the build. Note the date of the installed demo and any launcher or Steam update that preceded the problem. October’s changes are significant enough that an older result may not describe the current map.
- Record the machine. Write down Windows or macOS version, processor, installed memory and the GPU selected by the system. On a laptop, note whether it is running on battery or external power.
- Record the display mode. Note the monitor or panel resolution and whether the game is fullscreen, borderless or windowed if those choices exist in your build. Do not assume a windowed option is available.
- Choose one repeatable scene. Use the same menu, camera movement and map area each time. A quiet menu is not a substitute for the larger classic-mode map if that is where the hitch occurs.
- Describe the symptom. Separate a consistently low-looking frame rate from brief hitches during camera movement, a pause when a map loads, or text that becomes difficult to read. Each points to a different experiment.
- Change one item and restart when requested. Write down the old and new value. If the game or operating system asks for a restart, complete it before comparing.
This procedure creates a fair before-and-after record without pretending that an uncontrolled observation is a benchmark. It also makes a bug report more useful: include the demo build, map, camera state, operating system, GPU and rendering-driver choice.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which setting should I lower first when the GPU is the bottleneck?
Use resolution or render scale first only if the installed demo exposes such a control. Lowering the number of pixels the GPU must draw can improve smoothness, but it also softens the 3D image; there is no published Monarchs at Play value that can be called optimal.
Godot’s resolution-scaling documentation describes the general trade-off: a lower 3D scale can reduce GPU work while making the result blurrier. That documentation explains the engine principle; it does not prove that this demo includes a render-scale slider or that a particular percentage works best.

- Open the demo’s display or graphics menu and look for a control explicitly labelled resolution, render scale or 3D scale. If none is present, do not invent one through an unrelated operating-system setting.
- Lower the value by one available step, apply it, and return to the identical map and camera movement used for the baseline.
- Check motion and readability together. Inspect map labels, buttons and interface text, not just the world geometry.
- Keep the change only if it improves the hitch without making information unreadable. Otherwise restore the previous value and investigate another cause.
If the frame pacing does not change after a substantial resolution reduction, the slowdown may not be GPU-bound. CPU work, shader compilation, a driver issue or a build-specific hitch can remain, and lowering resolution will not necessarily address any of them.
Should I reduce effects or shadows?
Only when your actual menu provides an effects or shadow-quality control. The developer’s cloud-shadow update is a reason to inspect the menu, not evidence that a shadow toggle exists or that reducing it has a known FPS benefit.
- After recording the resolution result, return to the same scene and lower one effects or shadow option by a single step.
- Apply the setting and repeat the same camera movement. Look for changes in frame-time consistency, not merely a momentary peak.
- Check image quality: removing a visual effect can change depth cues or make the board harder to read even when movement improves.
- Restore the original value if there is no repeatable benefit. Do not stack several changes, because you will not know which control mattered.
Do not assume that texture quality, ambient occlusion, volumetric effects, anti-aliasing or V-Sync are present. A guide that lists them as guaranteed Monarchs at Play options would be describing a different menu.
Is Vulkan or DirectX 12 faster for Monarchs at Play?
There is no current, controlled result showing that one renderer is universally faster. If your launcher exposes more than one rendering-driver choice, compare them on the same computer, build, map and camera movement, and judge stability as well as apparent speed.
In a May 4, 2026 playtest recap, MixedMoonGames wrote: “During the playtest, a D3D12-related issue caused big problems for some players.” The developer said it had been fixed for the next playtest. That is historical troubleshooting context, not proof that today’s demo has a universal D3D12 defect or that Vulkan should always be selected.
A rendering driver is not a graphics-quality preset. Switching it can alter compatibility and frame pacing while leaving visual-quality controls unchanged. If one choice fails, record the exact error, driver option and build when reporting it; do not generalize one machine’s result to every Windows or macOS system.

On a Windows 11 laptop with integrated and discrete GPUs, assign the demo to the intended adapter before changing game quality settings. This changes GPU preference at the operating-system level; it does not create a High, Medium or Low mode inside the game.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Find Monarchs at Play in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to add the game’s executable, then select it.
- Choose Options, select High performance, and save.
- Close and restart the game, then repeat the same baseline scene.
These instructions follow Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 per-app GPU path: Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11. They apply to Windows 11 systems with multiple GPUs; do not extend the path to macOS or Linux. Microsoft’s separately named windowed-game optimization targets DirectX 10 and 11, so it should not be promised as a fix for a title running through D3D12 or Vulkan.

How can I compare two settings without fooling myself?
Hold the scene constant and compare frame-time consistency, image clarity and stability, not a single highest number. The demo’s changing content makes this especially important.
- Same map: The October 19 update increased classic-mode opponents from two to three and introduced a larger map. Results from an earlier, smaller build are not directly interchangeable with the current one.
- Same camera path: Use the same panning or zooming movement, because a still screenshot can hide a hitch that appears during motion.
- Same power state: On a laptop, keep the charger, operating-system power mode and GPU assignment consistent.
- Same driver choice: If comparing Vulkan and D3D12, change only that choice and keep every other condition fixed.
- Same readability test: Verify labels and interface text at the chosen resolution. A softer image is not automatically a successful setting.
- Same build: Record updates between comparisons. A patch can change map size, effects or behavior independently of your setting.
No controlled Monarchs at Play comparison or game-specific FPS statistic was located. Treat your notes as troubleshooting observations, not as a published benchmark.
Can an integrated GPU run the demo?
The Windows minimum lists Intel HD Graphics 520 or higher, so an integrated-GPU system can fall within the stated minimum. That specification is a compatibility floor, not a promise that every map, camera movement or future build will feel smooth.
Start with the native-resolution default and observe where the problem occurs. If the demo offers resolution or render scale, perform the incremental GPU-bound experiment described above. If that has no effect, verify that a hybrid laptop is using the intended GPU, then compare available rendering-driver choices under identical conditions.
Do not infer performance from the approximately 60-minute match description published by the developer. That figure describes game design, not frames per second, memory use or a hardware requirement.
What should macOS players check?
The current macOS minimum is macOS 13.0, an Intel Core i5 or Apple Silicon processor, 8 GB RAM, Metal 3-compatible graphics and 2 GB available storage. The listing does not provide a recommended configuration or a measured performance tier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the same method: record the macOS version and demo build, start with the normal display resolution and existing defaults, and change only controls actually shown in the game. Windows-specific per-app GPU instructions do not apply to macOS. If a renderer choice or graphics option is available, document its exact label when reporting a problem rather than translating Windows terminology onto the Mac build.
What does Steam Deck support mean for settings?
On October 27, the developer announced controller and Steam Deck support for the demo. Steam still labels Steam Deck Compatibility as Unknown, so support is not the same as Valve Verified status and does not provide a measured handheld frame-rate guarantee.

If you play on a Steam Deck handheld gaming PC, compare smoothness against battery use and image clarity. Use only controls present in the installed demo, keep the map and camera movement constant, and avoid presenting an unverified power profile or FPS cap as a recommended setting. A result from one demo build may change when the map or controller support is updated.

Stutter appears during camera movement
Repeat the same movement on the same map. If a resolution or render-scale control exists, lower it one step and check whether the hitch changes. If it does not, restore the image setting and compare the available rendering-driver choices, recording the build and driver used.
The game looks soft but is not smoother
Restore the previous resolution or scale. A lower 3D scale can blur the scene without helping when the bottleneck is not GPU rendering. Check the selected GPU on a Windows 11 hybrid laptop before lowering image quality further.
Only a large classic-mode map is affected
Record the map and opponent count. The October update changed classic mode from two opponents to three and added a larger map, so an older report or a smaller-map comparison may not explain the current behavior.
The game fails only with one renderer
Keep the working choice for play and report the failing choice with the exact build, operating system and driver. The historical D3D12 issue was acknowledged and described as fixed for a subsequent playtest; it should not be treated as a universal present-day diagnosis.
Labels become hard to read
Raise the resolution or scale to the last legible value, even if a lower value appears faster. In a strategy game, readable map and interface text is part of usable performance.

That information distinguishes a content change from a settings change and avoids turning a single historical bug into a claim about every current installation.
How these settings recommendations were selected
The order follows the evidence available for the current demo: begin with the sharp, existing defaults; test a resolution-related control only when the build exposes one; inspect effects controls without assuming they exist; select the intended GPU on supported Windows 11 laptops; and compare rendering drivers under identical conditions. The criteria are reversibility, image readability, repeatability and clear separation between a game setting, an operating-system preference and a rendering-driver choice.
Because the full game is unreleased and the demo continues to change, exact quality labels, driver-by-driver results, handheld power profiles and an optimal FPS target remain unverified. Recheck the Steam listing and developer news after patches before treating any menu or map detail as permanent.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 8 GB RAM minimum guarantee smooth play?
No. The 8 GB figure is the published minimum for both Windows and macOS, not a frame-rate promise. Smoothness also depends on the processor, graphics adapter, driver path, map and the behavior of the current demo build.
Is the developer’s 60-minute match length an FPS target?
No. It describes the approximate duration of a match as a game-design characteristic. It does not indicate how many frames per second a computer should deliver or which graphics preset to choose.
Should I upgrade my hardware before changing settings?
Not on the available evidence alone. First determine whether the installed build is using the intended GPU and whether a visible resolution or effects control changes the specific symptom; the published minimums do not identify a required upgrade tier.
Will the final release use the same graphics menu?
That is not established. The full game is still marked Coming soon, and the demo’s scope, map and support have changed through October updates, so a release build may expose different controls or defaults.
