There is no permanently correct “best clan” in Monster Train 2. For a first run, choose the primary clan whose champion, cards and defensive jobs are easiest to read, then keep that primary clan while changing only the ally. For high Covenant, judge clans by early-floor survival, reliable scaling, matchup coverage and how much room their plan consumes. In the current patch-2.2.1 data, Underlegion and Melting Remnant carry the strongest editorial signal, while Luna Coven, Railforged, Lazarus League and Banished are also rated highly. Those rankings indicate ceiling and flexibility, not a guaranteed win rate for every player or Seraph fight.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underlegion | Players prioritizing a high late-run ceiling | S tier in RailTools’ July 2026 editorial ranking; exact mechanics vary by build | Oct 2026 |
| Melting Remnant | Experienced players seeking another S-tier ceiling option | S tier in RailTools’ July 2026 editorial ranking; no universal win-rate claim | Oct 2026 |
| Luna Coven | Players comparing A-tier high-Covenant candidates | A tier in RailTools’ July 2026 editorial ranking | Oct 2026 |
| Railforged | Players willing to solve a demanding opening for a strong payoff | A tier; mechanical and smelting identity; PC Gamer reported early-game difficulty in standard Covenant 10 runs | Oct 2026 |
| Lazarus League | Players testing an A-tier primary or ally | A tier in RailTools’ July 2026 editorial ranking | Oct 2026 |
| Banished | Players testing an A-tier primary or ally | A tier in RailTools’ July 2026 editorial ranking | Oct 2026 |
What is the best clan in Monster Train 2?
The best clan depends on the job you are asking it to do. Beginners need a plan that remains understandable when draws are imperfect. High-Covenant players need a plan that survives stacked difficulty modifiers, scales before the final fights and still functions when a draft withholds a key rare card.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The current data covers 12 playable clans and a run structure with one primary clan and one allied clan. Your primary supplies the champion; both clan pools influence the cards and strategic tools available during the run. Because the available sources do not publish a reliable, universal win-rate table by clan and Covenant level, a letter tier cannot settle every matchup or player preference.
How do primary and allied clans work?
Choose the primary for the identity you want to pilot and the ally for tools that repair its weaknesses. The primary slot is not merely cosmetic: the champion comes from it, and progression rewards are weighted toward it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Primary clan: supplies the champion and receives 100% of the run’s clan XP according to the cited unlock guide.
- Allied clan: contributes its card pool and strategic options and receives 50% of the run’s clan XP.
- Deck identity: comes from the interaction between both pools, not from the tier label of either clan alone.
For learning, keep the primary fixed for several runs and rotate the ally. You then learn the champion’s breakpoints and the primary pool’s basic roles without changing every variable at once. Once the opening fights feel predictable, reverse the experiment: keep a familiar ally and test a different primary to see which clan is actually carrying your plan.
Which Monster Train 2 clan is easiest for beginners?
No cited source establishes one clan as objectively easiest. The most dependable beginner route is to select the clan whose opening cards let you identify one damage plan, one way to keep units alive and one answer to back-line or front-line threats without relying on a narrow rare discovery.
Use a visible learning loop
- Read the champion and starter cards before the first battle. Write down what is supposed to kill enemies, what is supposed to absorb damage and what effect is reserved for emergencies.
- Keep the same primary for several runs. This isolates decision mistakes from unfamiliar champion paths.
- Change only the ally. A new ally shows whether you need more damage, defense, draw, floor control or recovery.
- Review the first two floors after a loss. If the run failed before your engine appeared, the issue is early stability rather than late-game scaling.
- Promote the primary while learning. Since the primary receives the full XP share and the ally half, this approach also advances the clan you are actively studying faster.
What “easy” should mean
An easy clan is not necessarily weak. The useful test is whether its basic roles remain clear when a card is missing, a floor fills unexpectedly or an enemy arrives in an awkward wave. A mechanically demanding clan can be excellent after you understand sequencing, while a seemingly simple clan can still require careful scaling at high Covenant.
What clans are best for high Covenant?
Use Covenant 10 as the high-difficulty reference point used by the cited guide. RailTools describes it as the highest rank in its recorded game data and says each rank adds another modifier; treat that description as a current database representation rather than an independently verified official rules statement.
A high-Covenant clan earns consideration when it can do all of the following:
- Survive the opening battles: early units and spells must work before the full engine is assembled.
- Scale repeatedly: damage and health should grow through common or replaceable pieces, not one exact rare card.
- Cover multiple threats: the plan needs answers for front-line tanks, back-line attackers, sweep checks and bosses.
- Protect floor space: units, Room cards and Equipment must fit without forcing a damaging sequence of compromises.
- Recover from imperfect drafts: the clan should still have a coherent line when the ideal package does not appear.
- Survive the boss matchup: Seraph variations can punish setup time, limited defenses or a narrow damage profile.
RailTools’ July 2026 editorial ranking places Underlegion and Melting Remnant in S tier. Luna Coven, Railforged, Lazarus League and Banished appear in A tier. These are useful strength signals, not official developer grades and not proof that one clan wins more often for every player.

Is Underlegion better than Melting Remnant?
Neither is universally better on the evidence available. Both occupy RailTools’ S tier, so the practical choice is which plan you can pilot through the opening and which one fits the Seraph matchup and ally cards offered in your draft.
Use the two S-tier names as ceiling candidates rather than automatic beginner picks. During the first few runs, track whether your losses come from dying before scaling, running out of floor space, missing a defensive answer or failing to convert a winning setup into boss damage. The clan that produces fewer of those specific failures for you is the better choice, even if another clan has a higher theoretical ceiling.

What does each highly rated clan offer?
Underlegion
Underlegion is one of the two clans placed in S tier by RailTools in July 2026. That label makes it a sensible candidate for players looking for a powerful late-run plan, but the ranking does not identify a universal route, champion path or guaranteed early-game safety. Treat the first battles as a test of whether its available cards can stabilize before you invest in ambitious scaling.
As a primary, ask whether the champion gives you a complete enough starting plan. As an ally, ask whether its cards solve a specific hole in another clan’s defense or damage coverage. Do not assume that an S-tier label means every pairing is equally effective.
Melting Remnant
Melting Remnant shares S-tier placement with Underlegion. It is therefore a strong candidate for experienced players comparing high ceilings, but the available evidence does not support declaring it the easiest clan, the best primary in every run or a universal counter to every Seraph.
When evaluating it, separate what you know from what you are inferring. The editorial tier is a current strength judgment; your own draft still determines whether the run has an early blocker, a repeatable damage route and enough room for the final floor pattern.
Luna Coven
Luna Coven is in RailTools’ A tier. That makes it a serious high-Covenant option rather than a consolation pick, but an A-tier placement alone does not reveal whether it is more stable as a primary or more valuable as an ally in a particular draft.
Use the same checklist you would use for an S-tier clan: identify an opening defense, a way to scale and a boss plan before spending resources on cards that only become good after the engine is online.

Railforged
Railforged has an A-tier ranking and a mechanical, smelting-oriented identity in the cited coverage. PC Gamer also reported struggling to survive the early game in standard Covenant 10 runs. That combination illustrates why “powerful” and “easy to win with” are different claims.
Railforged can be a rewarding choice for a player who enjoys sequencing and is prepared to solve the first fights deliberately. It is a poor recommendation when your immediate goal is the most forgiving path to consistent Covenant 10 clears, because an excellent late ceiling does not repair an engine that arrives too late.

Lazarus League
Lazarus League is placed in A tier by RailTools. The ranking supports testing it among credible high-difficulty choices, but the cited material does not establish a single champion path, card package or matchup in which it is categorically superior.
Start by deciding whether you want it as the primary teacher for several runs or as an ally that patches a known weakness. That distinction matters more than treating the A label as a promise of identical performance in every deck.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBanished
Banished also receives an A-tier placement. It belongs in the group of clans worth comparing for difficult runs, while the evidence remains insufficient for a blanket claim that it is the easiest, strongest or best partner in every situation.
Use draft quality and Seraph matchup as tie-breakers. If the offered cards do not supply both an early survival line and a late scaling line, change the plan rather than forcing the tier-list reputation to fit the run.
What is the best primary and allied clan combination?
There is no single combination that the cited material validates for every run. Build the pairing by assigning jobs, then check whether the two clans compete for the same limited resources.
Assign the primary’s jobs
- Champion role: decide whether the champion is your main damage dealer, tank, support engine or floor-control tool.
- Opening defense: identify the cards that keep the first waves from reaching the top of the train.
- Scaling route: name the repeatable effect that turns a surviving floor into boss damage.
Assign the ally’s jobs
- Patch a missing answer: add back-line reach, front-line removal, healing, armor, draw or another tool your primary lacks.
- Reduce sequencing pressure: prefer cards that function without requiring a precise multi-card order if your primary already consumes many actions.
- Protect floor space: avoid an ally package that demands extra units or Rooms when the primary already fills every slot.
Check the pairing before committing
- Look at the first battles and confirm that at least one clan can stabilize with ordinary draws.
- Check whether both clans require the same Equipment slots or floor positions.
- Ask how the combined deck handles a high-health front enemy and a dangerous back-line enemy.
- Identify the boss plan before taking upgrades that only improve early fights.
- Keep a fallback line for a draft that never supplies the ideal rare card.
Why do I keep dying early on Covenant 10?
Early Covenant deaths usually mean the deck is investing in a late engine before it has paid for immediate survival. Covenant modifiers magnify small weaknesses, so diagnose the first failed floor rather than blaming the final boss.
If the first wave overwhelms you
Take a cheaper blocker, an immediate damage spell or a card that buys one more turn before selecting ambitious scaling. A plan that is theoretically weaker but online one floor earlier can produce a stronger run because it preserves health and upgrade opportunities.
If your floor fills too quickly
Count unit slots, Room cards and Equipment commitments together. The sequel’s emphasis on Room and Equipment means an old habit from the original game may no longer transfer cleanly: a card that looks efficient in isolation can crowd out the unit or Room that completes your actual plan.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you survive but cannot kill bosses
Check whether your damage scales against high-health targets or only clears ordinary waves. Add a repeatable source of damage growth, stronger single-target coverage or a way to keep the damage dealer active through repeated attacks.
If one Seraph matchup ends every run
Change the plan for that matchup rather than assuming the clan is universally weak. Coverage reports that clan performance can vary by Seraph, so a build that dominates one boss pattern may expose a different defensive gap against another.
How do Room and Equipment cards change clan comparisons?
Room and Equipment cards increase the value of sequencing and space management. A clan should be judged not only by the strength of individual cards but also by whether its complete floor can fit and function after those systems are included.
- Room pressure: a powerful Room may compete with the placement pattern your units need.
- Equipment pressure: an Equipment upgrade can amplify a primary damage or defense plan, but it may also consume a slot or resource needed elsewhere.
- Order pressure: effects that must be played before a unit attacks or after a trigger can become unreliable when a floor is crowded.
- Boss pressure: a slow setup can be acceptable in ordinary waves and still fail when a Seraph punishes delayed scaling.
These are Monster Train 2-specific reasons not to import an original Monster Train tier list without qualification. The sequel’s systems, card text, unlock order and balance can change the value of an otherwise familiar clan concept.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many cards and artifacts are in the current data?
RailTools reports 564 cards and 220 artifacts in its patch-2.2.1 data. Those totals are snapshots tied to that patch and source, not timeless specifications. RailTools says its counts, champion rosters and keyword frequencies are generated from game data, while its playstyle summaries are editorial synthesis.
That distinction matters when you read a clan ranking. A data-derived count can tell you what is present in the recorded build; it does not by itself prove that a clan is easier, has a higher win rate or is the correct ally for your next run.
How should you level clans efficiently?
Put the clan you most want to understand in the primary slot. The cited unlock guide reports 100% XP for the primary and 50% for the ally, so repeatedly placing an underleveled clan as primary advances it faster than using it only as support.
- Choose one primary whose champion you want to learn.
- Run several allies without changing that primary.
- Record which ally fixes your most common early failure.
- Move that successful ally to other primaries and compare whether the benefit was general or clan-specific.
- Return to the original primary at a higher level and reassess its Covenant performance.
How were these clan recommendations chosen?
The comparison uses the same questions throughout: early-floor stability, scaling reliability, defensive and damage coverage, floor-space and sequencing demands, champion dependence and ally compatibility. It combines the current patch-2.2.1 clan data, the 2026 RailTools editorial ranking, the cited unlock information and PC Gamer’s specific observation about Railforged’s early Covenant 10 difficulty.

FAQ
Can an A-tier clan outperform an S-tier clan against a particular Seraph?
Yes. The available coverage explicitly notes that clan performance can vary by Seraph matchup. A clan with a lower general ranking may provide the exact defensive or damage coverage that the current boss demands.

Record the first floor that became unstable, the missing answer that would have prevented it and whether the final loss came from damage, defense or floor capacity. This turns a tier label into a concrete next-run experiment.
Are the card and artifact totals permanent?
No. The reported 564-card and 220-artifact totals are tied to RailTools’ patch-2.2.1 data snapshot. Future balance updates, unlock changes or additions can alter both the counts and the relative value of a clan.
Should I force an S-tier clan when its opening cards are poor?
No. High-Covenant success depends on surviving the opening fights before the ceiling matters. If the draft cannot produce an immediate defense and a credible scaling route, preserving the run’s health and floor space is more important than honoring a general editorial ranking.
