Start by building one dependable combat plan, not by collecting every appealing card. In Monster Train 2, you combine two clans, defend a three-floor train and keep enemies from destroying the Pyre. Pick a main floor where your units can survive and deal enough damage, then make card, positioning and upgrade choices that support that floor. This is a beginner framework, not a guaranteed winning formula: the cards and options offered in a run affect which plans are possible.

What should I focus on first?

Every choice should help answer a practical question: what will stop the most dangerous enemies from reaching the Pyre? A card can look powerful and still be a poor fit if it does not help your units survive, deal damage where it is needed, or draw the pieces of your plan more reliably. Treat the Pyre’s safety as the test—not a card’s rarity or novelty.

The train has three floors, so you have to think about where enemies will be fought rather than treating the battle as one undivided line. Choose a floor to serve as your main combat plan. It should have a way to absorb enemy attacks and a way to kill threats; simply gathering strong attackers together is not enough if they cannot stay alive.

At the start of a run, look at your champion, frontline unit and damage source. Ask whether they can form a workable floor together. You do not need to know every possible combination before making this decision. You need a plausible answer to three questions: who can take the pressure, who can deal the damage, and what does the plan still lack?

  • Survival: Identify which unit or effect can keep your important damage source from being overwhelmed.
  • Damage: Decide which units or cards will deal with the enemies most likely to threaten the Pyre.
  • Consistency: Consider whether your deck can draw the pieces of the plan in time, rather than relying on several specific cards appearing together.
  • Position: Check that the units you want to use can fit together on the intended floor and be placed in a useful order.

These are functions, not a fixed build recipe. The right answer depends on the cards, upgrades and clan options actually available in the run.

Where should I place my units?

Put durable units where they can protect units that need time or cover to deal damage. The exact order and floor depend on the units and effects in your run, but a useful default is to think in terms of protection first and damage behind it—not to place units only because their card text looks exciting.

Floor choice matters because the three floors give you more than one place to prepare for combat. A unit can be set on the first floor before enemies spawn there. In its developer-posted FAQ, Shiny Shoe describes the timing this way: “You can now play unit cards one turn before the enemies spawn on the first floor.” That is a preparation opportunity, not proof that the first floor is always the best place for your main plan.

Before committing a unit, check both its job and its fit. A unit intended to protect the damage source has to be placed where it can actually do so, and the floor must have room for the pieces you intend to use. If a floor cannot support the units you want together, rethink the arrangement instead of assuming that every useful card belongs on the same floor.

  • Choose which floor is meant to deliver your main combat plan.
  • Identify the unit that needs protection and the unit or effect that can provide it.
  • Check whether the intended units fit on the floor and whether their placement supports their roles.
  • Use the first-floor setup opportunity when it helps establish the plan; do not treat it as a requirement.

How should I draft and improve my deck?

Draft for the plan you have, and for the part of it that is missing. A new card is useful when it improves damage, survival or consistency; it is not automatically useful just because it is appealing on its own.

A smaller, focused deck makes the cards that matter easier to draw. That is why removing a weak starter can be more valuable than adding another mediocre card: the removal reduces competition for the cards that make your combat plan work. This does not mean that every starter should always be removed. Keep a card if it still performs a job your deck needs.

When a card reward appears, ask what problem it solves and whether it fits the floor you are building around. If your main floor has damage but cannot protect its attackers, prioritize a way to improve survival. If it survives but leaves dangerous enemies standing, look for damage that helps finish them. If both jobs are covered but the plan depends on drawing a particular piece, value consistency over a card that adds a different, unrelated idea.

A practical reward check

  1. Name the current weakness. Is the plan short on protection, damage or reliable access to its key cards?
  2. Match the reward to that weakness. Prefer a card or improvement that strengthens the intended floor instead of opening a second plan you cannot support.
  3. Check the trade-off. Consider whether adding the card makes an important draw less consistent, or whether removing a starter would improve access to your core pieces.
  4. Reassess after a major choice. Once your deck changes, update what you consider a useful reward; a fix for an earlier weakness may no longer be necessary.

Do not follow a universal upgrade priority as if it were a rule. Which upgrade helps most depends on the cards offered and the role each card plays in your run. A damage improvement matters only if the unit or card contributes to the threat your plan needs to handle; a survival improvement matters only if it protects something the plan relies on.

How do room cards and equipment fit into a deck?

Room cards and equipment are separate strategic resources, not interchangeable generic attacks. Use each for the job it can do for your plan, and favor effects that reinforce the same floor or units rather than collecting a new card type simply because it is unfamiliar.

Before choosing one, put its effect into plain language: what changes for the floor, the unit or the combat plan if you take it? If the answer is that it makes your main approach more effective or covers a clear weakness, it may fit. If it requires you to build around a different set of pieces, ask whether the run has actually supplied those pieces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Positioning and floor space remain part of the decision. An effect is not useful in isolation if it does not support the units or floor you are relying on. Look for a connection between the effect and the plan you have already chosen; avoid treating a new card type as an automatic upgrade.

Which clan should I start with?

Start with the clan whose mechanic gives you a plan you understand, then look to the second clan to supply a missing role. There is no universally best starting clan: the available cards and the way your two clans fit together matter more than a clan label in isolation.

A player-created clan reference describes these broad starting identities. They are useful prompts for understanding what a clan may emphasize, not guarantees that every run will offer the cards needed for a particular build.

Clan Starting identity Question to ask when building
Banished Equipment and positioning Can the equipment and placement choices support the units on my main floor?
Pyreborne Dragons and Gold Does the run offer enough support for a coherent plan around those themes?
Underlegion Funguy and Decay What role does this mechanic play in keeping enemies from threatening the Pyre?
Lazarus League Infuse Which part of my combat plan benefits from the available Infuse options?
Luna Coven Moon phases Can I make the available phase-related effects contribute to one clear plan?

These summaries do not rank clans or promise that a particular mechanic will appear in a useful combination. If a run does not offer the pieces you hoped for, build around what it does offer rather than forcing a plan that depends on missing cards.

What are the best clan combinations?

The strongest pairing for a run is the one that turns a plausible plan into a more complete one. Choose a primary clan for its payoff and a secondary clan that helps cover a weakness; do not assume one pairing is best in every run.

Compare the two clans by the jobs they can do together. A flashy interaction may be less dependable if it requires several specific pieces, while a less dramatic pairing may be practical if one clan supplies the main plan and the other makes it more survivable or consistent.

Compare pairings by six questions

  • Win condition: What is the main floor trying to accomplish, and do the offered cards support it?
  • Frontline and survival: Is there a plausible way to keep the important units alive long enough to contribute?
  • Damage delivery: Can the plan deal with the enemies most likely to put the Pyre at risk?
  • Card-draw consistency: Does the plan work with a reasonable selection of cards, or does it require several particular pieces together?
  • Floor space and positioning: Can the units and effects the pairing needs work together on the intended floor?
  • Mechanic dependence: If the run does not offer a desired mechanic or card, does the pairing still have a workable route?

For example, if your primary clan points toward a damage plan but you do not yet have a convincing way to protect its attackers, evaluate the secondary clan by whether its offered cards help with survival. If you already have a dependable frontline, assess whether the second clan helps the damage plan finish threats or draw its useful pieces more reliably. These are conditional ways to evaluate a pairing, not claims that any named combination is guaranteed to succeed.

As the run develops, let the cards you actually receive refine your original idea. A pairing can support more than one approach, and the best-supported approach may differ from what you expected when choosing clans. The goal is to find a coherent use for the options on offer, not to force every run into a build someone else recommends.

Should I remove starter cards?

Consider removing a starter when it is weak enough to dilute the cards your plan depends on. A thinner deck can make its key cards easier to draw, but removing a card is not an end in itself: if the starter still contributes a needed function, keeping it may be the better choice.

Judge the removal against the deck you are building now. Ask whether the card still helps protect the main floor, deal with threats or make the plan more consistent. If it does none of those jobs and competes with stronger cards for a draw, removal may improve the deck more than taking another mediocre reward.

Apply the same logic to card additions. A card should earn its place by helping the actual plan—not merely by being stronger in isolation or belonging to one of your clans. The more your deck contains disconnected ideas, the less reliably it can deliver the specific pieces your main floor needs.

What should I change after a loss?

Diagnose the failure before changing the whole plan or clan pairing. The useful question is what function failed: did the frontline die, did enemies survive the damage floor, or did the cards the plan needed arrive too late?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the frontline died

Look for a way to improve survival or arrange the units so that the damage source is better protected. Do not respond automatically by adding more damage if your attackers cannot remain in the fight long enough to use it.

If enemies survived the damage floor

Reconsider what the floor needs to do more damage or which threat it needs to address. Review whether the cards you drafted actually supported that purpose, rather than replacing the whole clan pairing before identifying the damage gap.

If the needed cards arrived too late

Consider whether too many weak or unrelated cards diluted the deck, and whether a removal or more focused draft could improve access to the cards the plan relies on. If the plan requires several specific pieces to appear together, look for a version that works with fewer dependencies.

These diagnoses point toward changing the missing function, not treating any particular pairing as a failure by default. One run cannot establish that a clan combination is always bad; the options and the way the plan was assembled matter.

Which clans and content should I expect?

Monster Train 2 launched on Steam on May 21, 2025. The clan selection a player sees can depend on the content available to that installation, so launch-era descriptions should not be treated as a complete list for every reader.

Official additional-content material discusses Railforged. Official announcements have also discussed The Punished as upcoming; as of October 30, 2026, the available information does not establish that The Punished is playable. Check the current in-game selection or an official release announcement before planning around newly announced content, since ownership and release status can affect what is available.

That changing roster does not alter the central beginner method: identify the mechanic and cards the run actually offers, decide what your main floor needs, and use the second clan to help complete that plan. Avoid relying on an announced or unavailable card as though it were already part of your deck.

How do I make a first-run plan?

Use a short decision sequence at the start of the run, then revisit it when new cards change what is possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify an anchor. Look at your champion, a plausible frontline unit and a damage source. Decide whether they can support one main floor.
  2. Choose the floor and placement. Determine where the units can work together, put protection ahead of units that need it, and use the early first-floor placement opportunity if it suits the plan.
  3. Name the missing job. Decide whether the floor needs more survival, more damage or better access to its key cards.
  4. Draft toward that job. Prefer cards and improvements that reinforce the floor. Consider removing a weak starter if it dilutes the important draws.
  5. Connect new effects to the plan. For room cards and equipment, identify what the effect does for the floor or units before taking it.
  6. After a loss, change the gap. Use the failure—frontline, damage or timing—to decide what to improve next instead of discarding the entire pairing without a diagnosis.

The point is not to predict every battle or to follow a rigid tier list. It is to make each choice answerable: what does this add to the plan that keeps the Pyre safe?
