Verdict: Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is best understood as a preservation-focused look at the series’ formative years, not a modern remake or a complete franchise anthology. Its 23 playable games are paired with a substantial interactive documentary and archival material, giving the collection a historical appeal that goes beyond the quality of every individual game.

What is Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection?

Digital Eclipse’s collection brings together 23 playable Mortal Kombat games from the arcade era and selected home and handheld releases. It also includes an interactive documentary, character histories, a music player, archival video, rare concept art, vintage marketing, and interviews with original developers Ed Boon, John Tobias, John Vogel, and Dan Forden. The official launch FAQ and collection description frame it as a telling of the franchise’s creation and early impact—not an attempt to include every later Mortal Kombat release.

That distinction shapes the review. The package is aimed at players interested in how the series began and how its early releases differed across arcade, console, and handheld versions. It is not presented as a remake, and the available sources do not establish comparative image quality, latency, or input performance against original hardware.

What games and extras are included?

Digital Eclipse confirms a 23-game library spanning arcade titles and selected home and handheld versions. The collection’s historical material is a major part of the package rather than a small bonus menu: the documentary, archival assets, interviews, timeline, character histories, and music player supply context for the games and the series’ original storyline.

For a complete title-by-title list, consult the official FAQ; the sources cited here confirm the total and broad scope but do not provide the individual game roster. The collection’s design makes the most sense for players who want to compare early versions and explore the development story, not simply assemble the strongest possible set of fighting games.

How good is the collection?

GameSpot’s Jason Fanelli published a review in progress on October 28, 2025, and assigned the collection a 9. He praised its selection, preservation work, documentary, and optional quality-of-life features, including an infinite Fatality timer. GameSpot also discussed the PlayStation version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy included in the collection and its improved Shang Tsung morph loading behavior. These are GameSpot’s dated review observations, not claims of independent testing here; read the GameSpot review for its full assessment.

  • Digital Eclipse's interactive documentary format explores how Mortal Kombat changed the way society perceived video games. By using digitized humans as player sprites in an over-the-top, martial-arts fighter, the game thrilled players, shocked critics, and laid the foundation for a franchise that has thrived for more than 30 years. Hear firsthand from the original dev team of Ed Boon, John Tobias, John Vogel, and Dan Forden, along with other exclusive interviews, rare concept art, vintage marketing materials, and archival video footage.
  • Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection also lets players explore Mortal Kombat lore, with a timeline of the original series' storyline and comprehensive character histories that offer stories, secrets, and glimpses behind the scenes at their creation.

The same review cautioned that inclusion does not make every spin-off worth playing: it described Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces as poor games. That creates a useful distinction for prospective buyers. Someone focused on the strongest fighting-game entries may view those titles as dead weight; someone interested in the franchise’s history may value being able to see even its less successful experiments in context.

What online features are available now?

Online Arcade arrived across platforms on December 18, 2025, according to Digital Eclipse’s update history. The developer’s November 4, 2025 patch notes documented early fixes for input latency, audio, stability, menu behavior, and other issues; that history is not evidence that every launch concern remains in the current release. On April 28, 2026, Digital Eclipse announced cross-platform online play and online 2-on-2 modes for four specific game versions:

Krossplay is off by default and can be enabled under Online Options. Digital Eclipse describes “Krossplay” as its term for cross-platform online gameplay. There is one significant exception: Mortal Kombat Trilogy does not support online crossplay on the original Nintendo Switch because of technical limitations. The developer’s April 28, 2026 update and patch notes provide the feature details.

Which platforms can you play it on?

The developer lists Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Its FAQ says the same content is included on each platform; that does not establish identical performance. Digital releases began October 30, 2025, and physical releases began December 12, 2025, according to the official FAQ.

  • Uncover the complete Mortal Kombat origin story with the Legacy Kollection! This compilation delivers the arcade hits that started a revolution, the beloved SNES/Genesis versions that conquered living rooms, and a treasure trove of rare portable and console ports you may have missed.

The same FAQ says the game is verified on Steam Deck. For players comparing editions, the practical choice is therefore about preferred hardware, portability, controller, or physical format—not a different game library. Krossplay support depends on the particular version being played, so check the online-feature details above rather than assuming every game has the same options.

Variable refresh rate support

Digital Eclipse lists variable refresh rate (VRR) support for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Switch 2 handheld mode, and PC. This is a platform-support statement from the developer; compatibility may also depend on the display and hardware setup.

Is it a complete Mortal Kombat collection?

No. The package focuses on the franchise’s formative arcade years and selected early home and handheld releases. Digital Eclipse’s stated aim is to tell the creation story and show the series’ early impact, rather than gather every Mortal Kombat game released later. Buyers looking for an all-era anthology should not treat the 23-game count as a claim of franchise-wide completeness.

Should you buy Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection?

It is a compelling fit for players who want historical versions, archival material, and a substantial documentary alongside playable games. Its appeal is less straightforward if the main goal is a uniformly strong set of fighting games, since GameSpot’s review specifically criticized two included spin-offs. The collection’s value rests as much on curation and preservation as on the average quality of its games.

Physical and digital editions contain the same game content, according to Digital Eclipse. The FAQ says the Kollector’s Edition included a Goro controller holder, hardcover art and lore book, enamel pins, and a collectible coin, but preorders had ended and the edition was sold out when that FAQ was published; current availability is not established here.
