Yes—ordinary in-game saves can generally move between compatible Citra-family 3DS emulators on an Anbernic RG DDS. Save normally in the game, close the source emulator, back up its user data, then copy the matching title directory into the destination emulator’s selected user folder. For Azahar and Lime3DS, the commonly documented save file is main under the Citra-style sdmc tree. Save states are a different format and should not be assumed to work across emulators.
The RG DDS-specific menu and final bundled emulator image are not yet verified: Anbernic lists the device as an Android 16 pre-order with gradual shipping from December 10, 2026. The reliable method is therefore to follow the app’s actual user-folder selection and verify the resulting path, rather than copying instructions for the older RG DS.

Can you transfer saves between 3DS emulators on the RG DDS?
Usually, yes, when both applications use a compatible Citra-family save layout and you move a normal in-game save for the same title. Azahar and Lime3DS document the familiar structure in which game data sits below an emulator user folder’s sdmc/Nintendo 3DS directory; the per-game file most often identified for the save itself is main.PKForge’s Azahar and Lime3DS guide describes that layout.
This is a file-compatibility procedure, not a verified hands-on transfer on shipping RG DDS hardware. The console is still listed as a pre-order, and its eventual software image may select a different emulator, package name or storage location. Treat the path below as a map to confirm inside the running app, not as a fixed RG DDS promise.

Which 3DS data transfers, and which data should you avoid assuming will work?
The important distinction is between a save written by the game and an emulator snapshot. Copying a file with the right name does not make an unrelated format compatible.
| Data type | Transfer outlook | Practical instruction |
|---|---|---|
| Normal in-game save | Most likely to transfer between compatible Citra-family builds | Save in the game, exit the source app, then copy the matching title directory or its main file into the destination’s corresponding path. |
| Save state | Do not assume compatibility | Load the game’s own save after migration instead of trying to import an emulator snapshot. |
Extra data (extdata) |
Game-dependent | Keep a complete backup of the source sdmc tree; some titles may need extra data in addition to main. |
| Emulator settings, NAND or configuration | Separate from the per-game save | Do not overwrite the destination wholesale unless you know exactly which settings and system data you intend to replace. |
The Citra-family organization separates game saves under title from extra data and other system directories. That is why a copy of one file can be sufficient for one game but incomplete for another; retaining the original folder lets you add related data without losing the source progress.

Prepare both emulators and a rollback copy before touching the destination. You need:
- The source and destination app names and exact builds, including whether either one is running as a standalone Android app or as a RetroArch core.
- Access to the user folder selected by each app. On Android, the package-name directory is not a universal answer.
- A normal in-game save made recently, followed by a clean exit from the source emulator.
- Separate storage for a backup, such as a computer, removable card or another folder that will not be overwritten during the move.
- A backup of any existing destination progress before replacing a file.
Do not start by guessing an Android/data/<package> path. Azahar’s Android release discussion explains that users may need to reselect an existing user directory after a package-ID change, and Android setup can present the folder choice during onboarding.Azahar’s Android setup and user-directory discussion shows why the folder selected in the app matters more than a guessed package path.

How do you transfer a normal save between standalone Citra-family emulators?
Use the following sequence for a standalone Azahar, Lime3DS or another build that demonstrably uses the same Citra-style layout.
- Record the apps and user folders. Open each emulator’s storage or setup screen and note the selected user directory. If an app offers a “user directory” or equivalent option, record that exact location before browsing with a file manager.
- Make and close a game save. Start the game in the source emulator, save through the game’s own menu, wait for the save operation to finish, and exit the emulator. Do not rely on a recently created save state as the source.
- Make a full source backup. Copy the source user folder, or at minimum its entire
sdmcdirectory, to separate storage. Leave the original untouched. This gives you a rollback if the destination uses a different path or if an existing file is overwritten. - Locate the title directory. In the source user folder, inspect the path
<selected user folder>/sdmc/Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1>/title/00040000/<game>/data/00000001/main. The bracketed labels are directory names created by the emulator; type neither the literal text<ID0>nor<game>. The00040000segment identifies the game-title branch in this documented layout. - Match the same title. Copy the source game’s directory, or the relevant
mainfile, into the destination’s correspondingtitle/00040000/<game>/data/00000001directory. Match the game directory rather than choosing a file from another title or renaming an emulator state. - Create a destination path when necessary. If the destination has never created a recognizable directory for that game, launch the game in the destination, make a fresh in-game save, close the destination, and compare the new folders with the source. This is a cautious way to let the destination create its own identifiers; it is a procedural inference from the documented layout, not a confirmed RG DDS menu sequence.
- Protect destination progress. Before replacing a destination
mainfile or copying a whole game directory, copy the destination version to a separate backup. Keep both copies until the migrated save has been opened successfully. - Reopen and verify the game save. Start the game in the destination and choose its normal load or continue option. Confirm the expected progress without loading an older save state. If the game starts as new, close it and work through the troubleshooting checks below instead of repeatedly overwriting files.
PKForge documents the Azahar/Lime3DS path and cautions that an exported copy is not active until it is placed back into the emulator’s user data. Simply renaming a file does not confer compatibility.See the documented Azahar and Lime3DS save layout.
How do you find the correct user folder on Android?
Find it from the emulator that will read the save, not from a web search for its package name. During first-run setup, the app may ask you to choose a user directory; after an update or package-ID change, it may ask you to select the old directory again. Reopen the app’s storage or setup screen and confirm which folder it currently reports before copying anything.
Android file pickers can show a different view from a desktop file manager. An apparently empty guessed folder is therefore not proof that the save disappeared. Browse from the app’s own folder selector when possible, and compare the visible sdmc tree with the backup made from the source.

If you moved the save to a removable card, confirm that the destination app was granted access to that card and that you selected the same directory in its onboarding or storage settings. A successful copy into an unselected directory will have no effect because the running emulator is reading elsewhere.
What changes when Azahar runs as a RetroArch core?
RetroArch’s Azahar core has its own default location and a setting that can redirect it. Libretro documents an Azahar/ directory beneath RetroArch’s save directory; that directory contains the core’s sdmc data. The core’s Save Location option can instead use Azahar Default, which points to the standalone Azahar user directory.Libretro’s Azahar core documentation describes these choices.

- Open the Azahar core’s options in RetroArch before copying files.
- Check the value of
Save Locationand note whether it is the RetroArch save directory or Azahar Default. - Place the game’s
sdmctitle data under the location selected by that option, not under a second Azahar directory chosen by guesswork. - Restart the core and load the game’s normal in-game save.
RetroArch listing both “saves” and “states” does not establish that a save state from another emulator can be imported. The location setting is the key difference: a file can be copied correctly yet remain invisible if the core is configured to read a different user directory.
Why is the transferred save missing?
Work from the running app outward. These checks isolate the common causes without destroying the source copy.

- Wrong user folder: Reopen the destination’s storage selector and verify the active directory. Do not infer it from the Android package name alone.
- Wrong game directory: Compare the complete
title/00040000/<game>branch with the source and confirm that the title, not another game, was copied. - Extra data omitted: If the title uses data outside
main, compare the relevantextdatain the backup and copy only the matching game data after preserving the destination version. - Source was not saved normally: Return to the source backup and verify that the game’s own save command completed before the emulator was closed.
- Destination file overwritten: Restore the destination backup, create a fresh destination save, and compare paths again. Keep the source untouched while diagnosing.
- RetroArch location mismatch: Check
Save Locationand inspect the correspondingAzahar/sdmctree rather than the standalone app’s folder. - Android visibility difference: Use the app’s folder picker or a computer with the removable card attached. A directory that is hidden in one Android view may still exist in the selected user folder.
PKForge specifically warns that an exported copy is not the active save until it is imported into the path the emulator reads, and that renaming does not turn an incompatible file into a usable save.PKForge’s transfer notes provide the relevant compatibility and path guidance.

Anbernic lists the RG DDS as an Android 16 pre-order, with gradual shipping scheduled to begin December 10, 2026. Its product page lists a 4.7-inch upper display at 1200 × 720, a 4-inch lower display at 960 × 720 and TF/microSD expansion up to 2TB; configurations without an included card are also listed.Anbernic’s RG DDS product page presents these as manufacturer specifications, not independently measured performance or a verified final emulator image.
Do not transplant RG DS or Android 14 firmware instructions to the RG DDS. The shipped unit may use a different preinstalled app, and no fixed import/export menu or universal Android path has been established for it.
There is also a support-policy limitation. GamesRadar reported that the Azahar team’s October 26, 2026 announcement said, “Any issues or bugs related to devices from this specific manufacturer will not be investigated or resolved.”GamesRadar’s report on the Azahar support statement This does not show that copying Citra-family save files is impossible; it means device-specific troubleshooting may not be handled by the emulator project.

What is the safest way to preserve progress during a migration?
Keep three copies until the destination is confirmed: the untouched source user folder, a separate backup of that source, and the destination’s pre-migration copy. Copy rather than move files, make one change at a time, and open the game after each change. If the destination reads the save, retain the backup until you have made another normal in-game save and confirmed that the updated file appears in the destination path.
For a handheld with TF expansion, a separate microSD card can serve as practical backup storage, but it is optional. The manufacturer lists TF expansion and a no-card configuration; a USB-C card reader is only relevant if you are moving files through a computer and removable card, not a required replacement for the included charging cable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move a 3DS save from a PC Citra installation to the RG DDS?
It can work when the PC source and the RG DDS destination use compatible Citra-family structures. Copy the title data from the PC user folder, then place it under the destination app’s selected sdmc directory; the RG DDS-specific result remains unverified until its shipping software is known.
Can I transfer only one game instead of the whole user folder?
Yes. After making a complete backup, copy that game’s matching title/00040000/<game> directory and retain any related extra data if the title needs it. Keep the destination’s original game directory separately so you can restore it if the copy is incomplete.
Why did Azahar ask me to choose a folder again after an update?
A package-ID change can make Android lose the previous directory association even though the files remain intact. Use the app’s folder picker to select the existing user directory rather than creating a new empty one; Azahar’s Android discussion documents this re-selection behavior.
Will an RG DDS firmware update preserve emulator saves?
That depends on whether the update keeps the same emulator and user-directory selection. Before updating, copy the entire active user folder to separate storage and note the app’s current path, because the final RG DDS image and its storage behavior are not yet verified.
