There is no separate “PS5 Prism” console or transfer utility. The Prism Collection, announced on 28 October 2026, consists of transparent DualSense controllers and matching console covers in Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray. The covers change the shell, not the storage or operating system. Move your data exactly as you would between any two PS5 consoles: use Sony’s built-in Data Transfer when both systems work, PlayStation Plus cloud storage for saves only, or a USB backup when you need a complete console image.
Keep the old console powered and signed in until you have checked the destination. A wired network connection is usually faster than Wi-Fi, but Sony publishes no guaranteed transfer time. Most importantly, PS5 saves cannot be copied individually to a USB drive; use Data Transfer, cloud storage, or a full backup instead.

The Prism name identifies a cosmetic collection, not a new hardware generation. Sony’s 28 October 2026 announcement covers three transparent DualSense wireless controllers and matching PS5 console covers. Recommended prices are $84.99/€84.99/£74.99/¥12,480 for a controller and $74.99/€74.99/£64.99/¥9,980 for a cover, including tax where Sony lists it. Pre-orders begin 10 November 2026, with launches starting 4 February 2027; dates can differ by country.
Changing a cover is a shell replacement. It does not move users, games, saved data, captures, or settings, and there is no Prism-specific migration process. Sony’s cover instructions distinguish original CFI-1000 hardware from CFI-2000/7000 groups, and the announcement does not establish which chassis every Prism cover fits. Check the cover’s model compatibility before removing panels; do not assume a cover made for one chassis will clip onto another.

The procedures below apply to a new standard PS5, PS5 Slim, or PS5 Pro in the same way, subject to the destination’s disc-drive hardware and storage configuration.
Which transfer method should I use?
Use Data Transfer if both consoles turn on and you want the fullest migration. Choose cloud storage when you only need saves, USB Backup and Restore when you need a complete image but can accept that restoring erases the destination, and drive reuse when your games already live on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Method | What moves | Must the old console stay on? | Effect on destination | Cost and speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Transfer | Users, accounts, PS5-playable games, PS5-playable saves, captures, and settings | Yes, until copying completes | Additive: data already on the destination is skipped | Free; wired LAN is generally faster than Wi-Fi |
| PlayStation Plus cloud | Saved data only | No, after the upload finishes | Download selected saves; check timestamps first | Membership required; speed depends on internet |
| USB Backup and Restore | All user data, games and apps, saves, captures, and settings | Only while creating the backup | Destructive: restore erases all destination data | Requires a FAT32 or exFAT drive; local USB speed |
| Reuse USB extended storage | Installed game files on the drive | No network copy of those installs | Connect the drive and use its games; PS5 games must be copied back to play | Requires compatible SuperSpeed USB storage |
| Move M.2 SSD | Installed games and apps on the M.2 | No network copy of those installs | Install the drive in the destination; formatting is not required between PS5 consoles | Fast local reuse; requires compatible SSD and screwdriver |
Digital games can always be downloaded again from the destination’s Game Library. Disc games install from the disc, so a disc-less destination, including a PS5 Pro without its add-on drive, needs the separately sold disc drive to install physical games.
How do I prepare both PS5 consoles for Data Transfer?
Data Transfer is Sony’s official, preferred route when the source and destination both operate normally. Treat the old console as the source and the Prism-equipped console as the destination.
- Use the same PlayStation account. Sign in to the account on both consoles. Account-linked backup data and cloud saves are usable on another console only after you sign in with the account that created them.
- Update both systems. Install the latest available system software on the source and destination before starting. Different software versions can prevent or interrupt migration.
- Sync trophies. Trophy information is not included in a USB backup. Open the profile’s trophy area while online and allow synchronization to finish.
- Connect both consoles to the same network. Wi-Fi works. If the household normally uses Wi-Fi, connect a commercially available LAN/Ethernet cable to speed the transfer. Sony says that if both consoles already use wired network connections, you do not need an additional cable directly between them.
- Keep the source available. It does not need to remain connected to a television, but it must remain powered and reachable on the network.
Do not shut down either console, change network settings, or run an internet connection test during the copy. Sony warns that interrupting the process can damage or lose data.
How do I transfer from one PS5 to the new PS5 Prism?
For a PS5-to-PS5 move, Data Transfer copies users, account information, saves for games playable on PS5, screenshots, video clips, PS5-playable games, and settings such as language, login, power-saving choices, and login passcodes.
During first-time setup
- Turn on the destination PS5 and follow the setup screens.
- When the setup process offers data transfer, choose the option to transfer from another PS5.
- On the source console, follow the prompt to confirm the destination.
- Select the users and categories offered by the wizard, then start the transfer.
The destination may restart. After the restart, some game data can continue copying in the background. A game’s thumbnail appears on the Games home screen when that title is ready, so you can play it while the remaining data moves. Track progress in Control Center > Downloads/Uploads.
When the destination is already set up
- On the destination, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.
- Choose Continue and follow the prompts to locate the source PS5.
- Confirm the source console and select the information to copy.
Data already stored on the destination is not transferred again. Sony allows one source console per destination PS5 in this process. This makes Data Transfer additive rather than a wipe-and-replace operation, so it is safer than restoring a full backup when the new console already contains games or settings you want to keep.

Can I transfer from a PS4 to a PS5?
Yes. A PS4 can send PS5-playable games, their saved data, users, account information, and settings to a PS5, but what transfers depends on whether the destination is still in initial setup.
During initial setup, users who have signed in on the source PS4, PS5-playable saves, PS5-playable games, and console settings can move to the destination. After setup, only saved data for the logged-in user and PS5-playable games transfer; PS4 user/account information and console settings do not transfer after setup.

One-click scans. No signup required.
That distinction matters if you want the PS4’s language, login, power-saving preferences, or other console-wide choices to follow you. If so, start the transfer when the PS5 first asks during setup rather than postponing it.
How do child accounts work during transfer?
Sony does not allow a child account to transfer during the destination’s initial setup by itself. You have two practical options: complete the child account’s initial setup and transfer afterward, or use an adult account for initial setup and transfer both the adult and child accounts as part of that setup process.
Confirm family-member sign-ins before initializing the old console. A child’s saved data remains tied to that child’s account, so moving only an adult profile will not make the child’s progress appear.
How long does PS5 Data Transfer take?
Sony provides no official duration estimate. Transfer time depends on the amount of data, the number and speed of games, Wi-Fi interference, router performance, and whether you use wired LAN. Third-party guidance commonly warns that a large library can take hours over Wi-Fi, while a wired connection is usually faster; those are general guidance figures, not Sony guarantees.
Plan the move for a period when both consoles can remain powered. The destination can become usable after its restart, but copying may continue. Do not interpret the first playable game as proof that every save, capture, and setting has arrived.
Do I need PlayStation Plus to transfer data?
No. PlayStation Plus is not required for direct Data Transfer, copying PS4 saves to a USB drive, or making a full USB backup. A membership is required for PlayStation Plus cloud storage.

How do I move saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage?
Cloud storage is a saves-only method. It does not copy installed games, screenshots, video clips, or complete console settings. Sony’s current limits are 100 GB of PS5 saved data, 100 GB of PS4 saved data, and a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files.
Enable automatic synchronization on the old PS5
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- For PS5 games, choose Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data > Enable Auto-Sync.
- For PS4 games, choose Saved Data (PS4) > Auto-Upload > Enable Auto-Upload.
- Make sure automatic updates are enabled, then leave the source online until synchronization finishes.
For PS5 games, the console and cloud synchronize to the most recent data. PS4 saves upload automatically, but downloading them to the new PS5 is a manual action.

Download saves on the new console
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account.
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
- Select Download or Delete from Cloud Storage > Download to Console Storage.
Check the timestamps before downloading. If the cloud copy is older than the local save on the old console, downloading it can replace newer progress. Let the old console finish its upload first, and avoid launching the game on the new console until you have selected the correct version.
Can I copy PS5 saves to a USB drive?
No. Sony explicitly states: “You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.” For PS5 saves, use direct Data Transfer, PlayStation Plus cloud storage, or a full console backup. A normal USB flash drive cannot be used as an individual PS5-save export.
PS4 saved data is different. To copy it, connect a compatible USB drive to the source, then on the PS5 open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > USB Drive > Copy to Console Storage. This procedure applies only to PS4 saves; it does not unlock USB copying for PS5 saves.
How do I make a complete USB backup?
USB Backup and Restore is useful when the source console works but direct transfer is impractical, or when you want a local image of all user data. It includes games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings. All user data on the source is included rather than being selected by individual user.

- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The USB volume used for PS5 game installs is formatted differently and cannot hold a console backup file.
- Connect the drive directly to the PS5; avoid a hub.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Choose the categories to include and select Back Up.
- Allow the console to restart and finish. Do not turn it off while writing the backup.
Trophies are excluded, so synchronize them before creating the file. Games and apps stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are also excluded; keep those drives so you can reconnect them separately.
Restore on the destination
- Install system software on the destination that is the same version or newer than the version used to create the backup.
- Sign in with the PlayStation account associated with the backup.
- Connect the backup drive and open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Restore Your PS5.
- Select the backup and confirm the restore.
Restoring erases all data already on the destination. Sony warns that erased data cannot be restored. A restore also disables Console Sharing and Offline Play; turn that setting back on afterward if other household users need access to your games. Never disconnect the drive or power off the console during restoration.

Can I reuse my USB extended-storage drive?
Yes. Reconnecting a previously formatted PS4 or PS5 extended-storage drive can avoid copying those installed game files over the network. Sony requires SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, no USB hub, and only one extended-storage drive in use at a time.
PS4 games can run directly from extended storage. PS5 games can be stored there, but they must be copied to the PS5’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD before they can be played. Safely eject the drive from the old console before unplugging it, then connect it to the destination and follow the on-screen recognition prompt.

Yes, provided the drive meets Sony’s requirements: PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M, Socket 3, capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, and a cooling structure or heatsink. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster; M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
- Power down the source completely and unplug it.
- Remove the side cover and M.2 bay cover using a compatible No. 1 Phillips screwdriver.
- Remove the retaining screw and spacer, then lift out the SSD.
- Install it in the destination’s M.2 bay with the spacer in the correct position and secure the cover.
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account.
When moving an M.2 SSD between two PS5 consoles, formatting is not required. The games remain available to the account that owns them. Do not format the drive when prompted unless you intentionally want to erase it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check before wiping the old console?
Do not initialize, sell, or recycle the old PS5 until the destination has passed a deliberate checklist:
- Sign in to every required adult and child profile and confirm that each profile appears.
- Launch several games and verify recent save slots, not just the game icons.
- Check that screenshots and video clips are present if you wanted them moved.
- Open settings and confirm language, login, power-saving, and Console Sharing choices.
- Check Control Center > Downloads/Uploads for unfinished transfer jobs.
- Confirm cloud-upload timestamps or verify that the USB backup completed successfully.
- Remove discs, USB extended-storage drives, and M.2 SSDs that you intend to keep.
- Only after those checks, initialize the old console using its system-software reset option.
Keep the old console untouched for a few days if the data is irreplaceable. A successful transfer of one game does not prove that every account, save, capture, or setting was copied.
What are the most common transfer problems?
The consoles cannot find each other
Confirm both systems are signed in, updated, and connected to the same local network. Restart the router only before beginning a new attempt, not during an active transfer. If Wi-Fi discovery remains unreliable, connect both consoles by LAN to the same router.
The transfer stops or appears frozen
Do not immediately power off either console. Check the progress screen and allow time for large games. If the process genuinely fails, restart both systems, verify free space on the destination, and begin again; never change network settings or run an internet test while the copy is active.

A save is missing
Confirm you used the same account and opened the correct PS5 or PS4 save-data category. For cloud recovery, compare timestamps and download the newest file. For a PS4 save on USB, use the dedicated PS4 path; a PS5 save will not appear there.
The destination says there is not enough space
Delete or move unwanted games from the destination, reconnect extended storage, or move an M.2 SSD before retrying. Data Transfer skips games already present, while Restore does not offer that protection because it erases the destination first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A disc game will not install
The destination needs a compatible disc drive. A digital-only PS5 or a PS5 Pro without its separately sold drive cannot read the source game disc; the digital edition must be purchased or downloaded from the account’s Game Library.
Which choice is safest for most Prism owners?
Use Data Transfer over a wired network when both consoles work and you want users, saves, captures, settings, and games with the least risk to existing destination data. Add cloud synchronization as a second copy of important saves. Use USB Backup and Restore only when you understand that restoration wipes the destination, and use extended storage or an M.2 SSD to avoid recopying installations that already exist on a drive.
The Prism cover and transparent controller do not alter any of these rules. Once the hardware is compatible and installed, your migration is an ordinary PS5-to-PS5 move: same account, current software, verified saves, and no old-console wipe until the new system is proven complete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing to a Prism console cover delete my games or settings?
No. Replacing a compatible PS5 cover changes only the external shell. It does not format internal storage, remove accounts, or trigger Data Transfer, although you should power the console down and follow Sony’s model-specific cover instructions before opening it.
Can two PS5 consoles use the same PlayStation account after the move?
You can sign in on both, but account sharing and offline access depend on the Console Sharing and Offline Play setting. After a USB restore, Sony disables that setting, so re-enable it on the console intended for household sharing.
What happens to games purchased digitally if I do not copy the game files?
They remain associated with your PlayStation account. Sign in on the destination and download them from Game Library; only the installation files need to be copied or downloaded again.
Do trophies transfer with a PS5 backup?
Trophies are not included in USB Backup and Restore. Synchronize trophy information with PlayStation Network before moving or resetting the old console.
Can I use a USB hub for extended storage or a backup drive?
Sony’s extended-storage requirements call for the drive to connect directly, with no USB hub. Use a separate compatible FAT32 or exFAT drive for console backups rather than the differently formatted game-storage volume.
