Usually, your Xbox library and progress move with you. Sign in to the new Xbox One or Xbox Series console with the same Microsoft account that owns your games. Compatible digital purchases should appear in Ready to Install, and Xbox One or Xbox Series saves can sync through the cloud. You generally do not buy those compatible digital games again. The important exceptions are original Xbox saves, games that are not backward compatible, and physical discs used with the digital-only Xbox Series S.
Your account-based license follows your Microsoft account, while a separate device license can let other people use your purchases on one designated Home Xbox. That distinction explains most transfer and game-sharing questions.

Will my Xbox games transfer to a new Xbox?
Compatible digital Xbox One and Xbox Series purchases are tied to the Microsoft account that bought them, not permanently locked to the old console. On the new console, sign in with that account and look in Ready to Install for the owned titles. A new console does not turn a different Microsoft account into the owner of the old library.
“Compatible” matters. Xbox Series X|S plays selected Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, but backward compatibility is decided title by title. Owning a game is therefore not a promise that every version runs on every Xbox generation.

| Xbox One or Xbox Series save | Can sync through Xbox cloud storage | The old console must finish syncing while connected to Xbox network services |

| Xbox 360 or original Xbox digital title | Only playable when that specific title is backward compatible | Check the official compatibility listing for the game |

How do Xbox digital licenses work on a second console?
Microsoft describes two licenses for Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games. The user license is associated with the purchasing Microsoft account. That account can use its games on another Xbox when signed in. The device license is attached to one designated Home Xbox, allowing anyone using that console to play the purchaser’s device-licensed games.
As a result, moving to a new console does not automatically remove ownership from the account. It can, however, change which console receives the household-sharing benefit if you designate the new machine as Home Xbox. Microsoft says the Home Xbox setting can be changed up to five times during a rolling one-year period, so changing it casually can use up a change and move device licenses away from the previous console.

Do the preparation before selling, resetting or disconnecting the old console. The goal is to let cloud data finish uploading and to confirm which account owns the games.
- Identify the owner account. Confirm the email address or gamertag for the Microsoft account that purchased the digital games. A family member’s profile or a newly created account will not inherit that library.
- Connect the old Xbox to Xbox network services. Leave it online long enough for important games to finish syncing their saves. If a game reports that data is still syncing, do not reset the console yet.
- Open each important game once. This gives the console an opportunity to upload its latest save. Avoid deleting local data while a sync conflict is unresolved.
- Record physical-disc needs. If your collection is on discs, plan for a disc-capable replacement. Series S has no disc drive.
- Review Home Xbox sharing. If other household profiles rely on the old console, decide whether the new console should become the designated Home Xbox before changing the setting.
- Check older games individually. Look up Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles in the official backward-compatibility list rather than assuming that ownership guarantees support.
The exact current network-transfer wizard is not described here as a verified procedure. Xbox support pages can change their interface, so rely on the instructions shown on your consoles for any optional local-network copying feature.
How do I restore games on the new Xbox?
Start the new console and sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the old one. Open your owned-games area and check Ready to Install; compatible digital purchases should be listed there. Select a title to download it again. The license check is account-based, so reinstalling a purchased game does not create a second purchase.

After installation, launch one important game and wait for the cloud-save selection to appear. Choose the newer cloud data when the console presents a conflict, unless you have a specific reason to keep the local copy. Let the game reach its main menu, then verify that your expected progress, profile and achievements are present before removing anything from the old console.

Xbox One and Xbox Series saves can transfer to another Xbox One or Xbox Series console through the cloud. Achievements and other Xbox-service profile progress are likewise associated with the account and gamertag, which is why signing in with the original account is more important than copying a particular hard drive.
The original Xbox save exception
Original Xbox game saves are the major exception. Xbox’s official FAQ says saves created on the original Xbox do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. That limitation is separate from the newer-generation cloud-save behavior, so an original Xbox title that runs through backward compatibility may still start without the old local save.
Play Anywhere is an additional path, not a universal rule
Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to participating digital games. For those titles, Microsoft says progress is saved with the player’s gamertag and can continue on another compatible Windows device or Xbox console. Do not assume every Xbox purchase supports this cross-device feature; it is a title-specific program.
Cloud saves do not guarantee that every game-specific preference transfers identically. Local-only settings, screenshots, clips or other data outside the Xbox save system may require separate handling by the game or console.

Can I play my Xbox One discs on a new Xbox?
A supported disc-based game can be used on Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Insert the disc, allow the console to download the game to its hard drive, and keep the disc in the drive whenever you play; the disc acts as the ownership check. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot read physical Xbox, DVD or Blu-ray game discs.
What changed with disc-to-digital in 2026?
In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 26, 2026, Microsoft said Xbox Insiders would begin testing a disc-to-digital feature on August 31, 2026. The announcement says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but not every title is available at launch.
The resulting digital license is limited: Microsoft’s rules condition it on continued possession of the qualifying disc, and eligibility can vary with the game, publisher licensing and technical factors. Treat the feature as title-dependent rather than as a blanket conversion of an entire disc collection. Jason Ronald, Xbox vice president for next generation, described the goal as making it easier for libraries to move forward with players.
Which new Xbox is suitable for a disc library?
Choose a disc-capable Xbox Series X if you need to use physical Xbox One or Xbox Series games. Choose Xbox Series S only when your library is fully digital or you are prepared to replace disc purchases with eligible digital versions. Both choices still require title-by-title compatibility checks for older Xbox 360 and original Xbox games.

How does Home Xbox sharing change after a move?
On the designated Home Xbox, other profiles can use the purchaser’s device-licensed digital games without the purchaser staying signed in. The purchaser can use the same library on another console by signing in, using the account-based license. This is why a household may need to plan the Home Xbox assignment rather than simply signing into every console.

Changing the Home Xbox setting moves the device licenses to the newly selected console. Microsoft limits changes to five in a rolling one-year period. If you share games with family members, check which console is currently Home before making the switch and reserve changes for genuine hardware moves.
What happens to Game Pass access?
Game Pass access is governed by the Xbox account and subscription status, not by permanent ownership of every game in the catalog. Sign in with the subscribed account on the new console to use the service under its current terms. If the subscription becomes inactive or a game leaves the catalog, access can change even though separately purchased games remain licensed to the purchasing account.
Keep the two categories separate when troubleshooting: a missing Game Pass title may reflect catalog or subscription status, while a missing purchase usually points to the wrong account, an unsupported title or a licensing-sync issue.
Why is a game missing on the new Xbox?
Most missing-library cases have a small number of causes. Work through these checks before buying the game again.
- Wrong Microsoft account: Sign out and verify the email address and gamertag that made the purchase. A console can contain several profiles, but only the owner account carries the user license.
- Unsupported version: Check whether the title is included in Xbox backward compatibility and whether the edition you own is covered.
- Game Pass confusion: Determine whether you downloaded the game through a subscription rather than purchased it permanently.
- Incomplete save sync: Reconnect the old console, open the game and allow synchronization to finish before trying again.
- Disc requirement: On Series X, insert the qualifying disc. On Series S, a disc cannot serve as the license because the console has no disc drive.
- Home Xbox change: If other household users lost access, review the designated Home Xbox rather than repeatedly changing it.
Do not erase the old console until an important game has launched on the new one and the expected cloud save is visible. If a sync conflict offers local and cloud versions, stop and identify which timestamp contains the latest progress instead of selecting blindly.

What should I remember before disposing of the old console?
Keep the old console connected until digital ownership, cloud saves and physical-media plans are confirmed. Make sure every important title has reached a synchronized state, verify the new console with the owner account, and only then reset the old hardware. If you use household sharing, document which console is Home so the five-change annual limit is not consumed by trial-and-error switching.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy an Xbox game again if I change consoles?
Not when it is a compatible digital purchase owned by the same Microsoft account. Re-purchasing is only a possibility if you are trying to use a different account, a different unsupported version, or a physical copy on hardware that cannot read discs.
Will my Xbox achievements appear on the new console?
Achievements are Xbox-service data associated with your account and gamertag, so they should appear after you sign in with the original account. This does not promise that every game’s local options, screenshots or clips will be reproduced.
Do Xbox cloud saves work without Xbox Play Anywhere?
Yes for saves made on Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles moving to another console in those families; Play Anywhere adds a separate path to compatible Windows devices. Play Anywhere is limited to participating digital games and is not required for ordinary Xbox-to-Xbox cloud synchronization.
Can an original Xbox save be recovered on Xbox Series X|S?
Xbox’s stated compatibility rules exclude transferring original Xbox saves to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. A backward-compatible version may run, but you should be prepared to begin without the original console’s save data.
How often can I change my Home Xbox?
Microsoft allows up to five Home Xbox changes during a rolling one-year period. The limit applies to the account’s setting, so changing consoles repeatedly for troubleshooting can use the allowance and affect household game sharing.
