What game was trending on Steam?
The game was Mr. President!, released in 2016. Its president is called Ronald Rump, and the player’s role is to protect him from fictional assassination attempts. That distinction matters: the “assassination game” wording in the headline can sound as if the player is the attacker, but the game’s premise is defensive and satirical.
TheGamer’s James Troughton published the story on July 15, 2024, after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on July 13. The original TheGamer page was not accessible for verification, so the headline, byline, and publication date are preserved through bibliographic reference rather than a retrieved article.
How large was the reported player spike?
HandWiki attributes a 440% increase in concurrent players during 2024 to TheGamer’s July 15 story. The underlying Steam player data and the original reporting could not be independently checked, and no original publisher of the statistic was identified. Treat 440% as a figure reported through that secondary attribution—not as a verified Steam statistic.

Keep the 2024 story separate from a later Steam headline
A separate PC Gamer report published April 27, 2026 concerned Bohrdom, a chemistry and physics simulation game reportedly removed from sale after a different attempted attack and a wave of meme reviews. That later story involved a different game and event; it is not part of the 2024 Mr. President! report.
