MR. RECORDS level editor troubleshooting: fix missing assets, crashes, and save errors

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the MR. RECORDS Level Editor loses an asset, crashes while importing music, or refuses to save, there is no published MR. RECORDS-specific repair command or recovery procedure to run. The safest fix is a controlled diagnosis: protect the original project or export, verify the supported Windows configuration, reproduce the failure with the same level and media, isolate whether the trigger is input, imported media, or level data, and report the exact steps and message through the official community or publisher support route.

The built-in editor arrived in the updated demo. It can add your own music, generate gameplay, place obstacles, remix experiences, and share custom levels with the community. That flexibility also means a failure can originate in the imported audio, the level data, the editor build, or the way the level is being tested. The workflow below separates those possibilities without pretending that undocumented cache deletion or file surgery is an official MR. RECORDS remedy.

What the MR. RECORDS editor does—and what is documented

The MR. RECORDS Steam Community announcement and Steam store listing describe a built-in Music Level Editor. Its stated functions are to add personal music, generate gameplay, place obstacles, remix experiences, and share custom levels. The announcement says creations can be shared through the official MR. RECORDS Discord.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same official pages do not publish asset-folder names, package manifests, log-file locations, import-format rules, save-file locations, backup commands, crash codes, or a repair utility. Consequently, a path such as a particular AppData folder, a cache-clearing command, an archive edit, or a driver rollback should not be presented as an MR. RECORDS fix. Those actions may be generic PC experiments, but they are not documented remedies for this editor.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Start with the published PC requirements

Before changing a project, check the configuration against the requirements on the MR. RECORDS Steam listing. A mismatch can make an import or playtest fail for reasons unrelated to the level itself.

Requirement Minimum listed Recommended listed Why to check it
Processor and operating system 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system Confirms the basic platform expected by the PC build.
Windows Windows 10 Windows 11 Use the supported Windows edition when reproducing a failure.
DirectX DirectX 10 DirectX 11 Helps distinguish a graphics/runtime mismatch from a level-data problem.
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM Important when importing media or testing generated gameplay.
Available storage 2 GB Not separately stated Check space before importing or saving; a full drive can interrupt a write.
Controller Not required in the listing Controller recommended A compatible PC game controller is useful for playtesting and input-isolation checks.

These figures come from the published listing, not from a performance test. If your machine is below a minimum, bring the system up to the listed baseline before treating the level as corrupted. If it meets the minimum but not the recommendation, record that fact in a support report rather than assuming the project is broken.

Fix missing MR. RECORDS level-editor assets

“Missing asset” can mean that the source file is no longer where it was when the level was created, that an import did not complete, or that the editor cannot resolve a dependency while loading the level. The official pages do not identify a universal asset directory or promise that external audio is embedded in every custom level, so start with preservation and reproducibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Preserve the original before experimenting

  1. Close the editor without saving over the only copy.
  2. Make a separate copy of the original project or export. Keep the untouched copy in a different folder or on another drive.
  3. Give the working copy a clear name such as level-test-01 so every later attempt can be traced.
  4. Write down the level name, the asset name shown by the editor, the editor build if visible, your Windows version, and the exact error text.

Making a copy is workflow protection, not a documented MR. RECORDS recovery feature. It prevents a failed repair attempt from destroying the only evidence of the problem.

  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

2. Confirm the source asset independently

Check that the original music or other custom asset still exists and that its filename has not been changed since the level was made. Keep the check simple: locate the source file, confirm that it can still be opened by the application normally associated with it, and note its exact spelling. Do not rename or relocate the original while diagnosing; use a duplicate if you need to test a different name or folder.

3. Retry through the editor’s documented flow

Use the Level Editor’s normal create or import flow again rather than copying files into an assumed game directory. Import one asset into a new, minimal test level. If that succeeds, repeat with the affected level. This separates an unavailable source file from a problem in the existing level data.

The announcement confirms that players can add their own music, but it does not define every supported format, a required folder layout, or automatic repair of external dependencies. Do not infer those rules from another game. If the editor displays a format or path requirement, record that wording exactly for later troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Isolate the failing dependency

Test one variable at a time:

  • Open a new level with no custom media.
  • Add the same obstacle or generated-playback action without the missing asset.
  • Import the suspect music alone.
  • Load the duplicated original level only after the single-asset test.

If only the original level fails, the level data or one of its references is implicated. If every attempt to import that asset fails, the source file or the editor’s handling of that media is the stronger lead. If a new level also loses unrelated assets, capture the build and system details before changing anything else.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

5. Record a support-ready report

Include the asset’s exact name, the level or export name, the action that triggers the error, whether a new test level reproduces it, your Windows edition, DirectX level, RAM, free storage, controller status, and the full message as displayed. Attach the preserved project or export only through a support or community channel that accepts it. The official announcement identifies the MR. RECORDS Discord as the sharing community; it does not guarantee that every uploaded level contains all external media.

Stop MR. RECORDS editor crashes during song import

There is no published MR. RECORDS crash-specific procedure. Treat a crash as a reproducible technical failure rather than immediately as proof that the song or level is permanently damaged.

First classify when the crash occurs

  • Before the editor opens: check the 64-bit Windows, DirectX, memory, and storage requirements first.
  • When choosing an import command: reproduce with a new empty level and the same media.
  • During media processing: test the source asset by itself and record the exact step at which the application closes.
  • When generating gameplay or placing obstacles: use a minimal level to determine whether the imported song is actually required to trigger the failure.
  • Only during playtesting: compare keyboard and mouse input with the recommended controller, then report which input path changes the result.
  • Only when loading one existing level: work from the duplicate and identify the last asset or edit added before the crash appeared.

Use a controlled reproduction

  1. Restart the PC and open the same editor build you used when the crash first appeared.
  2. Open a new level and attempt the smallest reproduction: import the song, wait for the import to finish, and stop there.
  3. If that works, add one gameplay-generation action or obstacle, test again, and continue one change at a time.
  4. Repeat the sequence in the copied original project, never the protected original.
  5. Write down whether the application freezes, closes to the desktop, displays an error, or returns to a menu.

This sequence tests imported media, level data, and input separately. It does not claim that a clean level repairs the original; it tells you which component to describe to support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the supported environment before deeper testing

Confirm that Windows is 64-bit, that the installed DirectX level meets at least DirectX 10, that at least 8 GB of RAM is available to the system, and that the drive has at least 2 GB free. Windows 11, DirectX 11, and 16 GB RAM are the listing’s recommendations. A controller is recommended for playtesting, so connect a compatible PC controller if you normally use one; also try the same reproduction without it to see whether input changes the symptom.

Avoid presenting generic fixes as official

The published MR. RECORDS pages do not document cache deletion, graphics-driver rollback, launch options, log paths, or save-file surgery. You may see those suggestions in general PC troubleshooting, but label them as general experiments and preserve the project first. If the crash remains repeatable, send the exact sequence, level/export, imported media, build, Windows and DirectX details, and message or crash behavior to the official community or publisher support route.

Fix a custom level that will not save

No official MR. RECORDS page retrieved for this title lists a save location, automatic backup system, recovery command, or known save-error code. The safest approach is to protect the current state, confirm basic capacity, and narrow down the edit that makes saving fail.

Protect the current work

  1. Stop pressing Save repeatedly if the editor reports an error.
  2. Make a manual copy of the current project or export before removing assets or edits.
  3. Do not overwrite the only copy with a newly created test level.
  4. Record whether the failure occurs on an ordinary save, a first save, an export, or only when replacing an existing file.

Check capacity and configuration

Verify that the destination drive has free space and that the computer still meets the published 64-bit Windows, DirectX, RAM, and storage requirements. The listing specifies 2 GB of available storage as a requirement. That number is not a promise that every project needs only 2 GB; it is the published baseline, so record the actual free space when reporting a failure.

Find the edit that blocks the write

  1. Create a minimal test level and save it through the normal editor flow.
  2. On a duplicate of the affected level, remove or undo only the most recent change if the editor provides that operation.
  3. Save the duplicate under a new name rather than replacing the original.
  4. Add back the music, generated gameplay, and obstacles one at a time, saving after each addition.
  5. Note the first change after which saving fails.

This process identifies a trigger; it is not a guarantee that the editor can repair a damaged file. If even a new, empty level cannot be saved, stop modifying the original and provide the environment, destination, exact message, and reproduction steps to support.

Recover a broken custom level without losing the source

When a level opens with missing content, crashes during loading, or fails every save, treat the original as evidence. Work only on a copy and keep a dated sequence of exports or project copies.

Use a minimal rebuild when loading is unreliable

  1. Create a new level through the editor’s documented create flow.
  2. Import the music again using the normal interface.
  3. Confirm that the music alone can be tested.
  4. Recreate gameplay generation and obstacles in small groups.
  5. Save each successful stage under a new name.

If one stage consistently reproduces the failure, report that stage rather than claiming the entire editor is unusable. If the new level works but the old one does not, include both outcomes in the support report; that contrast is more useful than a statement that the file is simply “broken.”

Do not edit unknown files blindly

Because official documentation does not publish package manifests, internal paths, or recovery commands, opening an archive, deleting an unrecognized cache, or moving files inside the installation can remove evidence or create a second problem. Keep those actions out of a first-line MR. RECORDS troubleshooting guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Share a level with another player

The MR. RECORDS announcement says custom levels can be shared through the official MR. RECORDS Discord. Use the editor’s own export or sharing flow, if available in your build, and provide the recipient with the level name, the editor build, the custom music or other external assets required, and any steps needed to reproduce the level.

The announcement does not promise that every custom audio asset is embedded, that external dependencies are repaired automatically, or that a recipient’s copy will resolve files stored on your computer. Before sharing, test the export from a separate copy and tell the recipient exactly which media must accompany it. If the level works only on your machine, report that limitation instead of presenting the upload as a self-contained package.

Choose the next troubleshooting action

Action Preserves the original Best variable isolated Useful report outcome
Duplicate the project or export Yes Protects level data from experimental edits Lets support compare the untouched and working copies.
Test a new empty level Yes Level data versus editor or imported media Shows whether the failure is specific to one project.
Import one asset by itself Yes Imported media handling Identifies the exact asset and import step.
Playtest with and without the controller Yes Input handling Shows whether the recommended controller changes the symptom.
Rebuild in small stages Yes Last music, gameplay, or obstacle change Produces a short, repeatable failure sequence.
Delete unknown caches or edit installation archives No guarantee Not established by MR. RECORDS documentation Creates an undocumented change and can erase useful evidence.

What to include when asking for help

A useful report is a reproduction recipe, not just a symptom. Include:

  • The MR. RECORDS demo or editor build number, if the game displays one.
  • Your 64-bit Windows edition and whether it is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • DirectX level, installed RAM, and free storage at the time of failure.
  • Whether a controller was connected, and whether keyboard and mouse changed the result.
  • The level or export name and the exact custom asset filename.
  • The precise action immediately before the crash, missing-asset warning, or save error.
  • Whether a new empty level reproduces the same behavior.
  • The full on-screen message, including punctuation and any code.
  • A copy of the project or export only when the official community or support channel permits attachments.

Use the official MR. RECORDS Discord for community sharing as identified by the announcement, or the publisher’s support route for a private project or sensitive file. Keep the untouched original available in case a support request asks for another reproduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for each failure type

  • Missing assets: preserve the original, verify the source file, retry through the editor’s normal import flow, and isolate the asset in a new level.
  • Import crashes: confirm the published requirements, reproduce with one song and one empty level, then compare input and level-data variables.
  • Save errors: make a manual copy, confirm free storage, save a minimal level, and add edits back in stages.
  • Broken levels: rebuild from a duplicate rather than editing unknown installation files.
  • Sharing: use the official MR. RECORDS Discord, and do not assume external music is embedded or automatically repaired.
