Most MR. RECORDS editor problems fall into four patterns: the music file is rejected, the chart starts at a constant offset, the song drifts progressively out of time, or playback is silent. Use the editor’s own controls in that order: import the file, align tempo, set the first-beat offset, then tune scroll speed and volume. Shared ZIP files add a separate risk because the project may depend on audio that is not included.
What the MR. RECORDS editor can do
MR. RECORDS includes a built-in Level Editor rather than requiring a separate modding utility. From the main menu, look beside the story-play option for the editor entry. In the editor, the first icon lets you create a new level or import one from a file.

For a custom song, choose Import Music, select an audio file, and configure four parameters:
- Tempo: the song’s beat rate, which determines how the chart advances over time.
- First-beat offset: the starting alignment between the first playable beat and the audio.
- Scroll speed: the visual rate at which notes or obstacles travel.
- Music volume: the level of the imported track in the game mix.
The editor also offers Use Game Music for levels built around the game’s own tracks. When a level is ready, use Share to export it as a ZIP file. The official Level Editor FAQ directs players to the MR. RECORDS Discord for finding and sharing community levels.

Identify the symptom before changing settings
Changing every timing control at once makes diagnosis harder. First decide whether the failure is a file-import problem, a fixed starting error, a timing error that grows during the song, a visual-pacing issue, a sound-output issue, or a damaged/shared project.
| What you observe | Most relevant control or check | Why it fits | Project scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| The file is rejected or will not load | Import Music and the validation message | The editor has not accepted the audio yet, so timing settings cannot help | Local level |
| Every beat is early or late by about the same amount | First-beat offset | A constant start-time error is an alignment problem | Local or shared level |
| The song starts correctly, then increasingly loses sync | Tempo first, offset second | A rate mismatch accumulates over time; offset only moves the starting point | Local or shared level |
| Timing is correct but notes look too fast or slow | Scroll speed | This changes visual pacing without changing beat alignment | Local level |
| The chart runs but no music is audible | Music volume, game volume, and output device | The file may be playing while the mix or Windows output is muted | Local or shared level |
| A shared ZIP will not open | Import from a file, ZIP integrity, and export method | The archive may not be an editor export or may be incomplete | Shared level |
| A shared level opens without its custom track | Ask the creator for the source audio | The documentation does not promise that every ZIP embeds or redistributes custom music | Shared level |
When the Level Editor option is missing
Check the main-menu location
Return to the main menu and look beside the story-play option. The official FAQ places the Level Editor there, not inside a story chapter or a separate launcher.

The free demo includes the editor, but an old or partially updated build may not show the current menu. Confirm that the demo or game build has finished updating, then restart it. Restarting after an update is practical troubleshooting guidance; the FAQ documents the menu location but does not describe a separate editor-recovery command.
Know the current availability
The full game is listed on Steam as not yet available. The free demo is available and lists seven handcrafted levels. Its minimum requirements are Windows 10, 8 GB of memory, DirectX 10, and 2 GB of storage. If you are following instructions written for a different build, verify that you are launching the available demo rather than expecting unreleased full-game content.

Importing a song that the editor rejects
Use the editor’s import route
- Open the Level Editor from the main menu.
- Use the first icon to create a level or import an existing one.
- Choose Import Music, rather than trying to attach the file through a general file browser.
- Select the audio file and read any validation message shown by the editor.
- Only after the file is accepted, set tempo, first-beat offset, scroll speed, and music volume.
A file that plays in another media player is not automatically a file that MR. RECORDS accepts. The published documentation does not provide a definitive supported-format list, so do not assume that a particular extension, codec, sample rate, or bit depth is guaranteed. The validation response in your build is the authoritative indication that the editor can use the selected file.
Separate file validation from chart setup
If the import command fails immediately, changing tempo or offset cannot repair it because those controls apply after the audio is loaded. Re-select the file through Import Music and capture the exact validation behavior. If the editor accepts the file but the level later has no sound, move to the playback checks instead of repeatedly importing it.

Keep the original file available
Work from a stable local copy while building the level. Do not move or rename the audio between import and testing unless you are deliberately checking how the project handles an external dependency. This is especially important when a project will be shared, because the ZIP may not provide another player with the same source audio.
Fixing a song that starts out of sync
Use first-beat offset for a constant error
If the first playable beat is always early or always late by roughly the same amount, adjust first-beat offset. Offset moves the chart’s starting alignment against the audio; it does not change the song’s rate.
- Play the level from the editor and identify a clear first beat or transient.
- Decide whether the chart arrives before or after that sound.
- Change the first-beat offset in a small direction, then test again.
- Repeat until the opening beat lines up.
Use the same reference point each time. If the opening is aligned but later beats separate, stop changing offset and diagnose tempo.

Use tempo for progressive drift
When the chart starts correctly and gradually moves ahead of or behind the music, the tempo value is the first setting to check. Independent troubleshooting guidance identifies an incorrect tempo as the cause of increasing drift. A wrong tempo creates a rate error, so every subsequent beat is displaced a little more than the previous one.
- Test the beginning and a later section of the song.
- If the opening is close but the later section is substantially off, adjust tempo rather than offset.
- Play through another section to see whether the separation is shrinking or growing.
- Once the rate is stable, use first-beat offset for the remaining constant start-time error.
The correct order matters: tempo fixes the slope of the timing error; offset fixes the intercept. Applying offset first can make the beginning look better while leaving the underlying drift untouched.
Do not use scroll speed as a timing fix
Scroll speed changes how quickly the chart appears to travel on screen. It can make a pattern easier or harder to read, but it does not correct an audio-to-beat mismatch. Set tempo and offset until the hits are synchronized, then choose a scroll speed that feels playable.
When playback is silent
Check the level’s music volume
Open the level settings and verify that music volume is above zero. The official FAQ documents this control. A muted imported track can look like a failed import even when the file loaded correctly.
Check the game and system output
Verify the game’s master volume and the operating system’s selected output device. Confirm that the active headphones, speakers, or monitor are not muted and that another application has not taken exclusive control of the device.

Play from the editor
Use the editor’s play function to test the level before exporting it. If the track is audible in the editor, the import succeeded and the problem is more likely to be a game-mix or output-device setting. If it is silent there as well, recheck music volume and the selected file.
Distinguish missing music from missing chart audio
A level can display gameplay while the music channel is silent. Do not infer that the chart itself is broken from visual behavior alone. Test with a known working game track through Use Game Music when available; this helps separate a project’s imported-file dependency from a general output problem without changing the custom file permanently.
Fixing shared level ZIP files
Import the archive through the editor
- Open the Level Editor.
- Choose the first icon and select Import from a file.
- Select the ZIP produced by the creator’s Share command.
- Wait for the import to complete before opening the level.
A ZIP that will not open may not have been exported with the editor’s Share command, may have been renamed in a way the build does not recognize, or may have been incompletely downloaded. Obtain the archive again and preserve the original filename while testing. If the creator sent individual project files instead of the editor’s ZIP, ask for a fresh Share export.
Check whether the archive is complete
Compare the downloaded file size with the sender’s copy when possible and download it again if the transfer was interrupted. Do not edit the archive contents before importing; changing its structure can turn a valid editor export into an archive the game cannot read.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen the level opens but the music is missing
The available documentation does not promise that every shared ZIP embeds or redistributes custom music. Ask the creator whether the project expects a separately imported audio file and request that source file through an appropriate legal channel. A level can therefore import successfully while still lacking the track used during its creation.

Testing controls and reducing false diagnoses
MR. RECORDS is a timing-sensitive game, so unreliable input can look like bad tempo or offset. Steam recommends a controller for playing the game, and a Windows-compatible controller is also useful when testing custom levels.
- Connect the controller before launching the game so the build detects it consistently.
- Use the same input device while adjusting timing; switching between keyboard and controller can change your physical response.
- Test a built-in level before judging a custom chart. If inputs feel unreliable there too, fix the control setup first.
- Keep the controller still while checking whether a note arrives early or late; accidental presses can obscure the visual timing reference.
Controller use does not change the imported song’s tempo or offset. It simply gives you a more consistent way to play and evaluate the chart.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Follow this order so each test answers one question:
- Confirm the editor exists. Find it beside the story option on the main menu and verify that you are using a build that includes the feature.
- Load the project. Use the first icon to create a level or choose Import from a file for a shared ZIP.
- Load the track. Choose Import Music and follow the editor’s validation response. If it rejects the file, timing controls are not yet relevant.
- Set a plausible tempo. Compare the chart at the beginning and later in the song. Progressive separation points to tempo.
- Align the first beat. Once the rate is stable, adjust first-beat offset for a constant early or late start.
- Set visual pacing. Change scroll speed only after the audio and chart are synchronized.
- Restore audible output. Check music volume, the game mix, and the operating system’s output device, then play from the editor.
- Test the controls. Use a Windows-compatible controller if input timing feels inconsistent.
- Share only after local playback works. Export with Share and tell recipients whether the project needs a separate audio file.
What the demo and platform requirements mean for troubleshooting
The currently available free demo is a Windows release with minimum requirements of Windows 10, 8 GB of memory, DirectX 10, and 2 GB of storage. It contains seven handcrafted levels and the built-in editor described above. The full game listing is not yet available, so menu labels and behavior should be checked against the build you actually installed rather than assumed from descriptions of planned content.
These requirements do not guarantee that every audio file will import or that every device will produce sound. They establish the minimum environment for running the demo; editor validation, timing setup, output configuration, and shared-file completeness remain separate checks.
How to report a problem clearly
If you need help from the creator or the official MR. RECORDS Discord, describe the symptom shape rather than saying only that the song is “broken.” Include:
- Whether the Level Editor appears on the main menu.
- Whether the file fails during Import Music or loads successfully.
- Whether the timing error is constant from the first beat or grows through the song.
- The tempo and first-beat offset values you tested.
- Whether music volume is audible in editor playback.
- Whether the level is local or came from a shared ZIP.
- Whether the shared project opens but lacks its custom audio.
- The controller or keyboard setup used during testing.
This information lets someone distinguish a rejected file, an alignment error, a rate mismatch, an output problem, and a missing external dependency without asking you to repeat unrelated changes.

MR. RECORDS’s editor is easiest to troubleshoot when you treat each control as having one job: import validation decides whether the file can be used, tempo controls the rate, first-beat offset controls the starting alignment, scroll speed controls visual pacing, and music volume controls audibility. Shared ZIPs add archive integrity and possible external-audio dependencies. Checking those layers in sequence resolves the common failures without masking one problem with another.
