Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, write down:
- Which executable shows the error
- When it appears, such as during startup, after antivirus cleanup, or when opening a recorder
- Whether Mouse Recorder or Macro Recorder is installed
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The full path of the program named in the error

mrkey.dll is not a Windows system file. It is associated with Bartels Media’s Mouse Recorder software, where the documentation describes it as the mouse system hook that reads mouse movements. The file has also appeared in older Macro Recorder installations.
That distinction matters. If a genuine recorder installation is damaged, reinstalling the complete application is the correct fix. If an unfamiliar startup program requests mrkey.dll, especially after an antivirus Trojan detection, treat the incident as a possible malware problem instead of downloading the DLL.
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because mrkey.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting mrkey.dll.”
- “Error loading mrkey.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mrkey.dll was not found.”
- “mrkey.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording varies with the Windows version and loader condition. Follow the steps below in order.
1. Identify the program that is requesting mrkey.dll
Look at the title bar or body of the error message and note the executable name. If the message does not show it, use the timing of the error:

- Restart Windows.
- Record the first popup that mentions
mrkey.dll. - Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Mouse Recorder, Macro Recorder, or an unfamiliar entry that launches at sign-in.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- Note the complete path without opening or running the executable.
Now check whether the associated application is installed:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Mouse Recorder and Macro Recorder.
- If neither is installed, do not download
mrkey.dllseparately. The error may come from an orphaned startup entry or an unwanted executable.
If the program is located in an unexpected temporary, download, or user-profile folder, pause the repair process and complete the security checks in step 3.
2. Repair Mouse Recorder or Macro Recorder
If you recognize the program and intentionally installed it, repair the application before trying system commands.
Try Windows’ built-in repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Mouse Recorder or Macro Recorder.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the recorder again.
Not every traditional desktop program provides Repair or Reset. If Repair is unavailable or does not restore the file, continue with a complete reinstall.

- Save any recorder macros or scripts that you need.
- Close the recorder and any related process in Task Manager.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall Mouse Recorder or Macro Recorder.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from Bartels Media’s official Mouse Recorder or Macro Recorder website.
- Run the installer using an administrator account.
- Start the application and test the operation that previously failed.
The publisher describes Macro Recorder as the successor to Mouse Recorder and currently provides a Windows download. The current installer may not restore an old mrkey.dll installation exactly. If you need an older release and the current package does not work with an old macro file, use a saved original installer or contact the publisher. Do not substitute a DLL from another computer.
Success looks like this: the recorder starts without the missing-file message, and its normal recording or playback functions work.

If reinstalling fixes the error only temporarily, or Windows Security immediately removes the file again, stop reinstalling and continue with the security checks below.
3. Check Windows Security before restoring anything
A missing DLL can be the result of antivirus remediation rather than accidental deletion. One documented startup report showed a missing-mrkey.dll message after Microsoft Security Essentials detected a Trojan. Security research has also described legitimate Macro Recorder files being abused in DLL side-loading attacks.
Check the detection as follows:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand the event related to the executable or DLL.
- Record the threat name, detected path, and action taken.
- Do not choose Allow on device or Restore solely because the filename is familiar.
- Run a new scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Choose Full scan and allow it to finish.
If the event names an unfamiliar executable, such as a randomly named startup program, leave it quarantined. Remove the associated startup entry only after recording its path and completing the malware scan. If the detection continues, use Microsoft’s available offline or additional scanning options rather than creating an antivirus exclusion.
Restore a file only when all of the following are true:
- The application is one you intentionally installed.
- The file is in the expected application folder.
- The installer came from the original publisher.
- The detection has been reviewed and identified as a false positive.
- The parent executable and installation source are trustworthy.
If antivirus repeatedly removes mrkey.dll, the definitive safe path is to remove the questionable installation, scan the computer, and reinstall the legitimate application from the publisher. A familiar filename is not proof that a quarantined file is safe.
4. Remove an orphaned startup entry
If you previously removed Mouse Recorder or Macro Recorder, Windows may still try to start a leftover shortcut or task.

Check startup applications:
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Turn off an entry that points to the old recorder installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the popup no longer appears.
Also inspect scheduled tasks:
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Task Scheduler and open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch at sign-in or system startup.
- Open a suspicious task’s Actions tab and inspect the executable path.
- Disable the task only when you are certain it belongs to the removed application.
- Do not delete a task belonging to Windows, your security software, or another required business application without identifying it first.
If the startup executable is unfamiliar or was flagged as malicious, treat the problem as a security incident. Removing the popup without removing the malicious program is not a complete repair.
5. Check for an application version or architecture mismatch
A complete application reinstall normally supplies a matching DLL and executable. Problems occur when someone copies an old DLL into a newer installation, mixes files from 32-bit and 64-bit packages, or restores only part of a backup.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
That does not by itself tell you whether the recorder is 32-bit. Many 32-bit desktop applications run on 64-bit Windows. The important rule is to use the DLL supplied with the same application release as the executable.
Do not assume that a public file catalogue’s reported architecture, version, size, or hash represents an official Bartels Media release. Those details are not confirmed by the publisher. Do not copy a reported mrkey.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If the error changes from “missing” to “entry point not found” or “procedure entry point,” the file may be present but incompatible with the executable. Uninstall the recorder, restart Windows, and reinstall the complete matching package rather than replacing individual files.
6. Update Windows and check drivers only when the symptoms point there
mrkey.dll is an application hook, not a device-driver DLL. A driver update is not the normal fix for a missing recorder file. Consider drivers only if the application also fails when interacting with a mouse, keyboard, or other input device.

To check Windows updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
To inspect input devices:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices and Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the recorder.
Do not remove a device or install an unrelated driver just because mrkey.dll is missing. If the recorder itself is absent or damaged, reinstalling the recorder remains the definitive fix.
Manually checking every device and matching driver versions can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Mouse Recorder or Macro Recorder.

7. Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
Because mrkey.dll belongs to a third-party application, Windows system-file tools will not normally restore it. Use them when other Windows components are also failing, such as damaged built-in apps, update errors, or repeated system-file warnings.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
- Test the affected application.
Success looks like this: DISM completes without an error, SFC reports that it did not find integrity violations or repaired protected files, and other Windows functions behave normally. If the commands report corruption that cannot be repaired, review the result and address Windows servicing problems separately.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify repair issues before you decide whether to proceed; its free scan shows what it found, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and it cannot substitute for reinstalling the application that owns mrkey.dll.
8. Do not register or download mrkey.dll manually
Do not use regsvr32 mrkey.dll as a general repair step. regsvr32 is intended for DLL or OCX files that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary application library may not provide those exports, and registering it will not rebuild a damaged recorder installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also avoid:
- Random DLL download sites websites
- Copying the file from another PC
- Placing it in
System32orSysWOW64 - Disabling antivirus to force the file into place
- Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without evidence that one of those components is missing
- Allowing a security detection based only on the filename
Standalone DLL replacements can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different release, or leave the underlying executable and installation damaged. The safe source is the original Mouse Recorder or Macro Recorder installer from Bartels Media.
FAQ
Is mrkey.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Mouse Recorder and historical Macro Recorder installations. It is not normally expected in the Windows system directories.

Is mrkey.dll a Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX file?
There is no credible evidence that it belongs to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a Microsoft runtime. Reinstalling those packages is not the primary remedy.
Why did the error appear after antivirus cleanup?
The security product may have quarantined a file used by a legitimate recorder, or it may have removed a malicious startup executable that happened to request the same filename. Inspect Protection history and the executable’s full path before restoring anything.
Can I copy mrkey.dll from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different recorder release, architecture, or damaged file. Reinstall the complete application from its original publisher instead.
Should I run System File Checker?
Only as a secondary step when Windows itself shows signs of corruption. SFC repairs protected Windows components; it does not normally restore third-party application DLLs.
What if the current installer does not fix an old installation?
The old release may no longer be distributed. Look for the original installer you legitimately saved or contact Bartels Media support. Do not use an unverified DLL archive as a substitute.
