msapsspc.dll is a real Microsoft security-provider DLL, and Windows may report it as missing when an old program cannot start. It belongs to the legacy Distributed Password Authentication system, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a modern graphics driver.
msapsspc.dll: quick identification
| Item | What is known |
|---|---|
| Role | Microsoft Distributed Password Authentication Security Support Provider |
| Historical description | “DPA Client for 32 bit platforms” |
| Associated product | Microsoft Internet Services and legacy MSN-era authentication |
| Typical system location | %SystemRoot%System32 on historical Windows installations |
| Architecture | Historical 32-bit Windows component |
| Modern standalone download | No supported Microsoft DLL download is available |
| Correct repair | Repair the Windows installation or the original application that requests it |
Microsoft documents MSAPSSPC.dll as an SSP that provides the CleanupCredentialCache function. An SSP is loaded through Windows security-provider infrastructure, not like an ordinary application plug-in. Microsoft’s documentation places this technology in the Windows 2000-era compatibility range.
The exact package that installed a particular copy cannot be identified from the filename alone. An old application, restored disk image, legacy Windows installation, or altered system configuration may all be responsible.
What the error actually means
You may see messages including:
- “The program can’t start because msapsspc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because msapsspc.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading msapsspc.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “msapsspc.dll is corrupted.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in msapsspc.dll.”
These messages do not always mean the file itself is absent. Windows can find the named DLL but fail to load one of its dependencies. Other possibilities include:

- The DLL was deleted or quarantined.
- The file is damaged or has been replaced.
- A 32-bit application is being given an incompatible file.
- The program expects an older Windows component.
- The calling application was only partially removed or updated.
- Malware or system cleanup altered security-provider configuration.
A Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer can mention this old filename after restoring an XP-era image, installing old software, removing Internet Explorer-era components, recovering an aging game or utility, or running a legacy 32-bit application.
First, identify which program is requesting it
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. Find the owner of the error first.
Check the error window and shortcut
Read the title bar and message carefully. Then right-click the program’s shortcut, select Properties, and check the Target field. The executable name often identifies the application that needs the file.
If the error appears during startup:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Note recently enabled legacy programs.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location, if available.
- Search that application’s folder for its repair or uninstall option.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if offered.
- Select Repair or Reset.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, and choose Advanced options or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
For a game launcher, use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command. If the program has no repair function, uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s original installer or official launcher.
If only one old application fails, repairing that application is more likely to work than changing Windows system folders.
Fix 1: repair or reinstall the original application
This is the safest first repair when one program reports msapsspc.dll.
- Close the affected program and its launcher.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Locate the application.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Advanced options > Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program again.
If the error remains:
- Back up the application’s saves and settings.
- Uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or install it again from the original developer, publisher, or trusted game launcher.
- Apply its current updates.
- Test it before restoring optional modifications or plug-ins.
If the program is too old for current Windows, try its compatibility settings:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Right-click the program executable.
- Select Properties > Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode.
- Test an appropriate older Windows mode.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program genuinely requires it.
Compatibility mode cannot recreate a missing Windows security provider. If the software depends on an obsolete environment, run it in a properly isolated legacy virtual machine rather than copying old security DLLs into the host operating system.

Fix 2: check Windows Update and repair protected files
Use this path when several Windows components are failing, the file should belong to the operating system, or the problem began after disk corruption or an incomplete update.
Install pending updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Check for updates again until none remain.
- Test the affected program.
Then open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Accept the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for protected system files. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after SFC completes and test the program again.
If SFC says it repaired files, restart and retest. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, repeat SFC, and inspect the CBS log. If both commands complete successfully but the same program still fails, the application itself may be the real owner.
When you are manually comparing DISM and SFC output, it is easy to repeat the same repair without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; the repair is performed by the full version, but reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.
Fix 3: check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software can quarantine a modified, unsigned, or unexpectedly located DLL.
Windows Security
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
msapsspc.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
Do not automatically restore the file. Restore it only when the path matches the expected Windows or application location and the file can be verified as Microsoft-signed. If it was found in a Downloads folder, temporary directory, user profile, or unrelated application folder, leave it quarantined and investigate for malware.
Run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan when the file disappeared during suspicious activity or malware cleanup. Save open work first because the computer will restart.
Microsoft has documented malware that used the msapsspc.dll filename in security-provider manipulation. That means a missing file can be safer than blindly restoring an unknown copy.

Fix 4: verify the file’s path, signature, and version
If the file exists, check it before replacing or moving it.

Then display its embedded version information:
(Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32msapsspc.dll").VersionInfo
A valid Microsoft signature and an expected system path are reassuring. An unsigned copy, a file in a user-writable directory, or several conflicting copies requires further investigation.
Historical Windows XP inventories report a 32-bit DPA client and a version commonly shown as 6.00.7755, but those details are not a current Microsoft package manifest. Do not use that information to force a particular version onto Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 5: handle 32-bit and 64-bit mismatches correctly
The historical msapsspc.dll identity is 32-bit. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows uses the WOW64 compatibility environment, but that does not mean you should copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64.

The correct destination depends on the component, Windows build, installer, and loading mechanism. Public file listings do not establish a supported 64-bit version of this DLL.
Identify the calling executable first. If it is an old 32-bit program, obtain its matching original installer or repair package. Do not substitute a DLL from another Windows release, even if the filename matches.
Fix 6: check dependencies and the calling process
“The specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency rather than msapsspc.dll itself.
If only one program fails:
- Open the program’s logs, if available.
- Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting Event Viewer.
- Review Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Note the executable and faulting module names.
- Repair or reinstall that application.
If several programs fail, inspect Windows repair results and security-provider changes. Process Monitor can identify which executable requests the file and which load operation fails, but it is an advanced diagnostic tool. Do not delete or edit LSA or security-provider registry entries based on guesswork.

What about drivers and Windows Features
A display, chipset, audio, or storage driver normally does not provide msapsspc.dll. Installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET also normally will not restore this legacy SSP.
Still, update drivers when the failure began after a broader system upgrade or when Device Manager reports a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs one.
Avoid third-party driver bundles that replace unrelated system files. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the specific versions involved; the driver installation is performed by the full version, and a driver update will not replace this DLL when the legacy application itself is damaged.
Windows Features are not a normal source for this file. You may check Settings > Optional features > More Windows features for a feature required by the old application, but enabling random legacy components will not safely recreate an SSP.

Fix 7: use System Restore or a repair installation
Use System Restore when the error began recently after an uninstall, cleanup, driver change, or update.
- Press Windows key, type Create a restore point, and open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the affected program.
If Windows components remain damaged, use an in-place repair installation from matching official Windows installation media. Choose the option to keep personal files and applications. Back up important files first and confirm that the edition and language match the installed Windows version.
If the machine is severely compromised, a clean installation may be safer than restoring individual security-provider files.
What not to do
Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched build, or a modified file. Even a clean copy may not fix a missing dependency or damaged security-provider configuration.
Use the original application installer, Windows Update, Microsoft repair tools, or matching trusted installation media instead.
Do not copy the file into both system folders
Blindly copying files between System32 and SysWOW64 can create architecture and servicing problems. It also hides the identity of the program that actually needs repair.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair command
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. msapsspc.dll is an SSP, not an ordinary COM server. Running:
regsvr32 msapsspc.dll
may produce an entry-point error and will not repair Windows authentication infrastructure. Its relevant loading model is security-provider configuration, not COM self-registration.

If the error returns after repair
If the same message comes back after reinstalling the application and repairing Windows:
- Check whether antivirus quarantines the file again.
- Verify the file’s path and Microsoft signature.
- Identify the exact executable requesting it.
- Run a Defender Offline scan.
- Check Event Viewer and application logs.
- Stop using unofficial copies of the DLL.
- Consider an isolated legacy virtual machine for incompatible software.
If multiple Windows components fail, prioritize malware investigation and a Windows repair installation. If only one old program fails, its installer, plug-ins, or compatibility with modern Windows is the more likely cause.
FAQ
Is msapsspc.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s legacy Distributed Password Authentication security provider and Internet Services infrastructure.
Is it part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No reliable Microsoft evidence connects it to those runtimes. Installing them is not the normal fix.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I download it from Microsoft?
Microsoft documents the component and its role but does not provide a supported standalone download for msapsspc.dll. Use Windows repair or the original application installer.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
The historically documented identity is a 32-bit component. Do not assume that a 64-bit replacement exists or move files between system directories without confirming the application and Windows build.
Should I run regsvr32 msapsspc.dll?
No. It is an SSP rather than a normal COM DLL, so regsvr32 is generally inappropriate.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be damaged, the architecture may be wrong, or the application may expect a legacy Windows environment.
What is the safest fix?
Repair or reinstall the exact application that reports the error. If Windows itself is damaged, use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, trusted installation media, or an in-place repair installation.
