What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
mscorwks.dll is a genuine Microsoft .NET Framework component used by older applications built for .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5. The safest first fix is to enable or repair .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0), then restart Windows.
Do not download mscorwks.dll from a random DLL website. A copied file can be malicious, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or leave the damaged .NET Framework installation unrepaired.

What is mscorwks.dll
mscorwks.dll is part of the Microsoft Common Language Runtime, or CLR. The name refers to the workstation version of the runtime. In .NET Framework 2.0, the workstation and server runtime variants were merged into mscorwks.dll.

These framework versions use CLR 2.0.50727. Installing or enabling .NET Framework 3.5 also supplies the older .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 layers required by many legacy programs. Microsoft documents the relationship between these framework versions in its version and dependency guide.

Common locations are:
%WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll
%WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll
The Framework directory contains the 32-bit runtime. Framework64 contains the 64-bit runtime. A 64-bit Windows installation can legitimately contain both directories because it can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Microsoft describes these .NET installation paths in its Windows .NET installation documentation.
This is a legacy file, but it remains relevant when an older game, launcher, utility, installer, Windows component, or developer tool still targets .NET Framework 2.0 through 3.5. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 remains supported through January 9, 2029, according to Microsoft’s .NET Framework lifecycle information.
What the error actually means
A message naming mscorwks.dll does not prove that the file itself is missing.
Windows or an application may display this error when:
- .NET Framework 3.5 is disabled or not installed
- the CLR file is damaged
- the Windows component store is damaged
- the application requests the wrong architecture
- a dependency cannot be loaded
- .NET Framework registration or servicing data is damaged
- antivirus software quarantined the file
- an application or game installation is incomplete
- a debugger is using the wrong CLR command
- a recent update, restore operation, disk problem, or failed installer disrupted the framework
A literal message such as mscorwks.dll was not found is also possible from a generic loader or application, but that wording does not establish that the file is absent from Windows. The complete error text and path matter.
Microsoft explains that .NET initialization errors occur when the required runtime is missing, invalid, or cannot be loaded. Read Microsoft’s guide to .NET Framework initialization errors if the message appears before an older application starts.
Check the path and architecture first
Before repairing anything, record the full path shown in the error.
A path containing:
\Framework\v2.0.50727\
normally points to the 32-bit CLR.
A path containing:
\Framework64\v2.0.50727\
normally points to the 64-bit CLR.
The application must be able to use the matching runtime architecture. A 32-bit program generally needs the 32-bit CLR. A 64-bit program needs the 64-bit CLR. Do not copy a file from Framework into Framework64, or the other way around.
To search both framework directories, open Command Prompt and run:
where /r "%WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET" mscorwks.dll
A healthy installation may return one path or both paths, depending on the Windows architecture and installed framework components.
For more detail, open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem "$env:WINDIR\Microsoft.NET\Framework*\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll" |
Select-Object FullName, Length,
@{Name='FileVersion';Expression={$_.VersionInfo.FileVersion}},
@{Name='ProductVersion';Expression={$_.VersionInfo.ProductVersion}}
The command reports the location, file size, file version, and product version of files that exist. There is no single file size or version that is correct for every Windows release, architecture, and servicing state. Do not compare your result with an arbitrary DLL website and replace the file because the numbers differ.
If where finds no file, that still does not mean you should download one manually. Continue with the official .NET Framework repair steps below.
The 60-second fix: enable .NET Framework 3.5
For most application errors involving the v2.0.50727 path, start by enabling the Windows feature that supplies .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 through version 25H2
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Windows Features. - Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Find .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
- Select the checkbox.
- Select OK.
- If Windows asks to download files from Windows Update, choose the option to allow the download.
- Wait for the feature installation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application again.
If the checkbox is already selected, clear it, select OK, restart Windows, then return to the same screen and enable it again. This refreshes the optional component state.
A successful repair usually means that the program starts without the mscorwks.dll message. If another error appears, record its exact wording instead of immediately downloading another file.

Windows 11 version 26H1 and later
Microsoft changed the installation method for .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 11 version 26H1, build 28000, and later. In these releases, .NET Framework 3.5 is installed with a version-specific standalone installer rather than the older Windows optional component method.
Use Microsoft’s current Windows 11 .NET Framework 3.5 installation guide, identify the installer matching your Windows release, install it, and restart.
Do not keep retrying the Windows Features method if your Windows 11 release is one of the versions covered by Microsoft’s standalone-installer instructions.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why installing .NET 4.x may not fix this
Installing .NET Framework 4, 4.8, or another 4.x release does not necessarily satisfy an application built for .NET Framework 1.1 through 3.5.
The older framework generations and .NET Framework 4.x can coexist. If the failing program expects the CLR 2.0.50727 runtime, it may continue to report mscorwks.dll even though a newer .NET Framework version is present.
Install or enable .NET Framework 3.5 for an application that requires the older layer. Do not remove .NET Framework 4.x simply because it did not resolve this particular error.
If the application documentation specifically says it requires a modern .NET runtime rather than .NET Framework, use the official .NET download page and install the runtime version named by the application. The modern .NET runtime and the older .NET Framework are different product families.
Repair damaged Windows components with DISM and SFC
If enabling .NET Framework 3.5 does not help, repair the Windows component store and protected system files. This is especially important when:
- the dialog says the file is not designed to run on Windows
- more than one .NET application fails
- System File Checker identifies
mscorwks.dll - the problem began after an interrupted update or restore
- the computer experienced disk errors
- a repair or cleanup operation preceded the failure
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Leave the Command Prompt window open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. The process can appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes.
A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, do not close the issue as an application problem. Move to the matching installation-media method below.
Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files were not found to be corrupt.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again if necessary, review the CBS details, and repeat SFC after the component store is repaired.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.
Microsoft’s supported order and command examples are documented in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

When you are manually repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions are handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this fix.
Use matching installation media when DISM needs a source
If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, use installation media that matches the installed Windows version and edition.
The generic DISM source command is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess
Replace the example source path with the actual matching Windows repair source.
To enable .NET Framework 3.5 from Windows installation media, the command is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:D:\sources\sxs
Replace D: with the drive letter assigned to the installation media.
The source must correspond to the same Windows release. Microsoft warns that using mismatched media can leave .NET Framework in an unsupported or unserviceable state. Follow Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 deployment instructions with DISM.
After the command succeeds:
- Restart Windows.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart again if SFC repairs files.
- Test the affected program.
If the feature installation fails with 0x800F081F, 0x800F0906, or 0x800F0907, check the Windows release and installation-media match before trying again. Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 installation-error guidance covers these cases.
Use the official .NET Framework Repair Tool
Microsoft provides the .NET Framework Repair Tool for supported .NET Framework installation and configuration problems.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Download it only from Microsoft, run it, accept the license terms, and follow the repair prompts. Restart Windows when the tool requests it, then test the failing program.
The tool is not a universal replacement for enabling .NET Framework 3.5, repairing the component store, or reinstalling a damaged application. Microsoft lists the framework versions and Windows versions supported by the tool. If the problem specifically concerns the optional .NET Framework 3.5 component, complete the Windows Features or matching-media repair as well.
Repair the affected application or game
If only one program fails while other .NET applications work, the application itself may be damaged. This often happens after:
- a game update was interrupted
- an installer was cancelled
- application files were moved manually
- a launcher reported damaged files
- a prerequisite installer failed
- the program was restored from a backup
- security software removed an application file
Use the program’s own repair, verify, or reinstall process.
For a game launcher, look for options named Verify, Repair, Scan, or Validate. These options compare the installed files with the application’s expected files and replace damaged files while normally preserving saved data.
If the program has no repair option:
- Back up saves, profiles, settings, or license information if the application’s documentation requires it.
- Uninstall the application through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or reinstall the application from its official publisher or launcher.
- Start it again after the installation completes.
Do not copy mscorwks.dll into the application’s folder as a substitute for repairing the framework. The application may be loading the system CLR from a different location, and a private copied DLL can create a second architecture or version conflict.
If the error appears while a bundled DXSETUP.exe runs, that does not prove DirectX is the cause. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer supplies legacy D3DX, XInput, and XAudio components. It does not supply mscorwks.dll.
Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may quarantine a file after a scan, update, or application installation.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that names a .NET Framework file or the affected program.
Do not restore a quarantined mscorwks.dll automatically. First confirm that the path is a normal Microsoft .NET Framework path, run a full Windows Security scan, and repair or reinstall .NET from Microsoft where possible.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item may cause Defender to detect it again. The Allow on device action should not be used casually. See Microsoft’s guidance for Protection history in Windows Security and restoring quarantined files.
In most cases, reinstalling or repairing the framework from Microsoft is safer than restoring one isolated file.
Check whether Windows recently changed
If the problem started immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, application installation, system restore, or cleanup operation, the timing is useful evidence.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit application compatibility
A 64-bit Windows computer can have both of these files:
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll
That is normal.
Problems can arise when:
- a 32-bit application is started with an incomplete 32-bit framework installation
- a 64-bit application expects the 64-bit framework and it is damaged
- someone copied a DLL between the two directories
- an old installer was configured for a different architecture
- a program was launched through a compatibility wrapper
Do not replace one architecture with the other. Repair the framework installation and let Windows restore the correct files.
If the program offers a 32-bit and 64-bit edition, install the edition that matches the program’s requirements. If only one application fails, check its publisher’s system requirements before changing system-wide components.
Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics driver, chipset driver, or DirectX-related program may be the process displaying the error, but the named mscorwks.dll file is still a .NET Framework CLR component.
Consider driver repair when the same application also reports:
- a graphics device failure
- a display driver timeout
- a missing audio device
- a hardware initialization error
- a DirectX feature-level problem
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows.
Do not uninstall a working driver solely because an application displayed an mscorwks.dll error. Repair .NET first unless the application also provides evidence of a hardware or driver problem.
When checking many devices manually means hunting through versions and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation through the full version is optional, and a driver update is not a guaranteed fix for a .NET Framework error.
Installing Visual C++ Redistributables also does not repair mscorwks.dll. Visual C++ supports programs built with Microsoft C and C++ libraries, while mscorwks.dll belongs to the older .NET Framework CLR. Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads only when the application specifically reports a Visual C++ runtime requirement.
Do not use regsvr32 for mscorwks.dll
regsvr32 is not the correct repair command for mscorwks.dll.
The tool registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. mscorwks.dll is a CLR runtime component, not an ordinary self-registering COM library. There is no Microsoft-supported instruction to register it with regsvr32.
Running commands such as these is not a valid repair:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsregsvr32 mscorwks.dll
regsvr32 C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll
They may produce an entry-point error and can distract from the real problem. Microsoft explains the limitations of regsvr32 in How to use the Regsvr32 tool and troubleshoot errors.
Use Windows Features, the official .NET installer, DISM, SFC, or the application’s repair process instead.
If SFC cannot repair mscorwks.dll
When SFC reports that it cannot repair the file, save the relevant entries from the Component Based Servicing log.
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop and look for entries naming mscorwks.dll or related framework components.
Then:
- Run DISM with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Restart Windows.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart and test the application.
Manual replacement is a controlled last resort only after identifying the exact protected file and obtaining a known-good copy from the same Windows version and architecture. It is not permission to download mscorwks.dll from a DLL repository or copy it from an unrelated computer.
If the error occurs only in one Windows account
If the program works in another local Windows account, the system-wide CLR may be healthy. The failing profile may have a damaged per-user configuration, permission problem, startup item, or application cache.
As a diagnostic check:
- Create or use another local Windows account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Start the same program.
- Compare the result.
If the program works there, investigate the application’s per-user data and permissions. Do not immediately replace the system runtime.
This is a diagnostic direction rather than a Microsoft-specific mscorwks.dll repair. Back up application data before deleting caches or resetting a profile.

Therefore, a message such as Unable to find module mscorwks may mean that the debugger command does not match the runtime loaded by the target process. It does not automatically mean that mscorwks.dll is missing from Windows.

FAQ
Is mscorwks.dll a genuine Windows file?
Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft .NET Framework Common Language Runtime component associated with the .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 generation.
Which program installed mscorwks.dll?
The file is supplied as part of the .NET Framework installation used by the application or Windows component. An older program may trigger the error, but that does not mean the program should contain its own replacement DLL.
Is mscorwks.dll safe?
A file in the expected Microsoft .NET Framework directory can be legitimate. The filename alone does not prove that an arbitrary copy is genuine. Check its path, repair .NET through Microsoft, and investigate antivirus history if the file disappeared.
Is .NET Framework 4.8 enough?
Not necessarily. An application built for .NET Framework 2.0 through 3.5 may still require the older framework layer. Enable or install .NET Framework 3.5.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I download mscorwks.dll?
No. Downloading a standalone DLL risks malware, a wrong Windows build, a wrong architecture, and an incomplete repair. Install or repair the Microsoft framework package instead.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
Do not do this as a normal fix. The source computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, servicing level, or file state. Repair Windows using Microsoft-supported packages and matching installation media.
Why does the error mention DirectX?
The program displaying the message may be a game, launcher, or DirectX prerequisite installer. That does not prove DirectX is the underlying cause. mscorwks.dll belongs to .NET Framework.
Why does installing Visual C++ not help?
Visual C++ Redistributables provide C and C++ runtime libraries. They do not supply the .NET Framework CLR file mscorwks.dll.
Why does the error appear only for a 32-bit program?
The 32-bit program may require the CLR in the Framework directory while a 64-bit program uses Framework64. Repair the appropriate .NET installation and do not swap files between the directories.
What if Windows Features does not show .NET Framework 3.5?
On Windows 11 version 26H1 and later, Microsoft uses a version-specific standalone installer instead of the older optional-component method. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 .NET Framework 3.5 instructions.
What is the correct order for DISM and SFC?
Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Can I register mscorwks.dll with regsvr32?
No. mscorwks.dll is not repaired by registering it with regsvr32. Use .NET Framework repair, DISM, SFC, Windows Features, or the application’s repair process.
What should I do if only one game fails?
Verify or repair the game files through its launcher. If verification does not help, reinstall the game or its launcher, then confirm that .NET Framework 3.5 is enabled.
What should I do if every older .NET program fails?
Enable or reinstall .NET Framework 3.5, run DISM followed by SFC, check antivirus quarantine, and restart Windows. If the problem began after a system change, consider System Restore or Windows recovery options.
What does “could not be loaded” mean?
It means the required runtime could not initialize. The file may be missing or corrupted, but the message can also result from a damaged dependency, wrong architecture, broken component-store data, or a damaged framework installation.
