MSI’s U.S. store listed the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM-001US as in stock for $1,299.99 when checked on August 18, 2026. The original “you can’t buy it just yet” description applied to its June 2024 unveiling, not its current U.S. status.
What happened to the MSI Claw 8 AI+?
MSI unveiled the Claw 8 AI+ at Computex on June 4, 2024. It was presented as an 8-inch Windows gaming handheld powered by Intel’s then-upcoming Core Ultra Series 2 platform, known by the codename Lunar Lake. MSI did not provide a firm retail date at that event, so early reports correctly described the device as official but not yet available.

That changed later. On December 3, 2024, MSI announced the Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+ using “Available Now” language. Availability still varies by region and model, but the specific U.S. listing discussed here is currently buyable: MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM-001US.

What Lunar Lake means for gaming
“Lunar Lake” is Intel’s codename for the Core Ultra Series 2 mobile platform. The Claw 8 AI+ uses the Core Ultra 7 258V, combining CPU cores, an integrated Arc 140V GPU and an NPU in a low-power mobile package.
The gaming-relevant change is primarily the newer CPU/GPU design, improved efficiency, drivers and power management—not the word “AI” in the product name. The NPU and Copilot+ PC capabilities do not automatically increase game frame rates. Gaming performance still depends on the GPU, memory, drivers, power limit, cooling, resolution, graphics settings and upscaling.
How it improves on the original MSI Claw
The Claw 8 AI+ is a larger and more refined successor to the original 2024 Claw A1M. MSI’s changes address both hardware limitations and complaints about the first generation.
- Larger screen: The 8-inch 1920×1200 16:10 panel provides more display area than the original Claw.
- Larger battery: The 80Wh battery gives the handheld more capacity, although demanding games can still drain it quickly.
- Newer platform: Lunar Lake and Arc 140V are designed to deliver better efficiency and integrated-graphics performance than the original Intel platform.
- Redesigned controls: MSI updated the sticks, bumpers, D-pad and triggers, including Hall-effect components intended to reduce traditional stick-drift concerns.
- More connectivity: Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports support DisplayPort, charging, docks, external storage and other peripherals.
- Cooling changes: MSI uses its Cooler Boost HyperFlow design to manage heat at handheld power levels.
- Updated software: MSI Center M provides handheld-focused controls and modes for balancing performance and battery use.
The result is a substantial revision rather than a minor cosmetic refresh. However, it is still a Windows handheld with integrated graphics, not a replacement for a desktop gaming PC or a high-end discrete-GPU laptop.
Performance and battery expectations
Independent reviews were broadly more positive about the Claw 8 AI+ than reviews of the original Claw. Tom’s Guide described it as a significant improvement, highlighting the larger display, battery and Lunar Lake efficiency. Windows Central reported very strong handheld performance for its testing period.
Those conclusions should not be turned into a universal claim that the Claw 8 AI+ beats every AMD-based handheld. Results change with the game, resolution, preset, upscaling mode, driver, thermal conditions, power limit and whether the system is plugged in.
MSI claimed that, at a 17W operating point, the Claw 8 AI+ delivered up to 113% higher peak FPS and an average 20% higher FPS than competitors under its test conditions. These are MSI’s manufacturer test claims, not universal independent benchmark results.
Battery figures require similar caution. Laptop Mag reported 13 hours and 31 minutes in a continuous web-browsing test at 150 nits. That is a light productivity workload and should not be interpreted as 13 hours of AAA gaming. Modern demanding games can consume the 80Wh battery much faster.
What can you play on it?
Because it runs Windows 11, the Claw 8 AI+ can access Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store and other Windows launchers. It is well suited to older AAA games, esports titles, indie games and many PC-library workloads. Emulation is also possible where the software and game files are legally obtained. MSI additionally supports Android gaming through its App Player software where compatible.
Rank #2
- Intel Core Ultra 7 258V – AI-Powered Efficiency: Next-gen Series 2 processor delivers 50% better GPU performance and 40% higher efficiency. 47 NPU TOPS accelerate local AI tasks – from Copilot+ to real-time game optimization.
- 8" 120Hz VRR Touch Display: FHD+ IPS screen with 500 nits sunlight readability. 16:10 golden ratio and VRR support eliminate tearing. Perfect for AAA gaming, streaming, or productivity on the go.
- 80Whr Battery + Fast Charge: Massive 80Whr capacity beats most handhelds. Fast charge gets you back in action quickly. Game longer, worry less – whether on a flight or a long commute.
- Revolutionary Intraflow Cooling: Redesigned airflow keeps internal components cool, preventing thermal throttling. Hall Effect analog sticks and triggers offer drift-free, microscopic precision – built to last.
- Unlimited Expansion: Connect external GPU for desktop-class graphics, dual 4K displays, or high-speed storage. Wi-Fi 7 delivers 5.8 Gbps and 2ms latency – lag-free cloud gaming and downloads.
Newer, graphically demanding AAA games may require reduced settings, a lower rendering resolution, upscaling or a higher power mode. Windows also remains less controller-oriented than SteamOS: launcher updates, desktop dialogs and system maintenance can make the experience feel more like using a compact PC than a console.

Price: $899 at launch versus $1,299.99 now
Price reports about this handheld can be confusing because they refer to different dates and sources. Tom’s Guide reviewed it as an $899 launch-era product. That figure should not be treated as the current U.S. price.
As of the August 18, 2026 check, MSI’s U.S. store listed the black A2VM-001US configuration at $1,299.99 and marked it In Stock. Stock and pricing can change, and the official U.S. listing does not establish the price or availability of every regional SKU, special edition or third-party listing.
When checking a listing, confirm the exact model number, memory, storage, finish, seller, warranty and shipping terms. Search results may also mix the Lunar Lake Claw 8 AI+ with the newer Claw 8 EX AI+.
Claw 8 AI+ versus Claw 8 EX AI+
The Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is the Lunar Lake model with Intel Arc 140V graphics. MSI announced the newer Claw 8 EX AI+ at Computex 2026 with a different Intel Arc G3 Extreme platform. The two names are similar, but they should be treated as separate hardware generations.

Do not assume that a listing for “Claw 8 AI+” describes the same machine. Verify whether it says A2VM or EX AI+, and do not apply the A2VM’s price or specifications to the newer model.
Who should buy the MSI Claw 8 AI+?
It makes the most sense for buyers who specifically want a large-screen Windows handheld with a high-capacity battery, 32GB of memory, 1TB of storage and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. It is also a credible upgrade for original Claw owners who were dissatisfied with first-generation performance, controls, cooling or software.
The current U.S. price makes the value question unavoidable. Buyers seeking the lowest-cost handheld, a console-like interface or maximum AAA performance should compare alternatives before ordering. The approximately 795g weight and 8-inch chassis also make it less pocketable than smaller handhelds.
Alternatives to consider
- Steam Deck OLED: A more console-focused software experience and a major reference point for value, but not equivalent in Windows compatibility or hardware configuration.
- ASUS ROG Ally family: A relevant AMD-based Windows alternative for buyers comparing performance, battery and software.
- Lenovo Legion Go family: Worth considering if a large display and detachable controllers are priorities.
- MSI Claw 8 EX AI+: The closest same-brand comparison, but it uses the newer Arc G3 Extreme platform. Its current price and stock should be checked separately.
Prices and availability for these alternatives are not included here because they were not independently verified for August 2026.

The MSI Claw 8 AI+ was officially announced before it was available to buy, which explains the original headline. That is no longer the current situation: the Lunar Lake handheld is a real retail product, and MSI’s U.S. store listed the A2VM-001US in stock at $1,299.99 on August 18, 2026. Its larger display, 80Wh battery, redesigned controls and improved efficiency make it a much stronger proposition than the original Claw, but the current price and Windows-handheld trade-offs deserve careful consideration.
