Sony’s PS5 VR controllers are real, but they were not newly announced in 2026. Sony revealed the hardware on March 18, 2021, officially named it the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller on January 4, 2022, and launched it with PlayStation VR2 on February 22, 2023.
The controllers bring adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, finger-touch detection and precision tracking to supported PS VR2 games. They are designed primarily for PS VR2 on PS5; Sony’s official PC setup does not support their adaptive triggers or full haptic feedback.

What are Sony’s PS5 VR controllers called?
The official name is the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller, often shortened to the PS VR2 Sense controller. There are separate left-hand and right-hand controllers, and a standard PS VR2 package includes both.
They are not “DualSense VR controllers.” The PS VR2 Sense controllers borrow technologies associated with the PS5 DualSense controller, particularly adaptive triggers and haptics, but they are separate motion controllers built for virtual reality.

Sony first showed the next-generation VR controller in its March 2021 reveal. The company announced the official name and additional PS VR2 details in January 2022. PS VR2 and the controllers launched globally on February 22, 2023, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment.
How do the adaptive triggers work?
Each PS VR2 Sense controller has an adaptive trigger that can provide variable resistance as it is pressed. Rather than simply vibrating, the trigger can become harder to pull or create a more distinctive point of resistance based on what is happening in a compatible game.
Possible uses include:
- Feeling tension while pulling a bowstring
- Simulating resistance when firing or handling a weapon
- Adding physical feedback when gripping, crushing or manipulating an object
Adaptive triggers are a software feature, so support depends on the individual game. They are not automatically active in every PS VR2 title. Sony describes the triggers and other controller features on its official PS VR2 product page.

- Adaptive triggers: Dynamic resistance can represent actions such as drawing, firing or gripping.
- Haptic feedback: Compatible games can deliver more detailed physical feedback than basic vibration.
- Finger-touch detection: The controllers can detect finger placement even when a player is not pressing a button, helping games represent gestures and open-hand movements.
- Precision tracking: The controllers are tracked as part of the PS VR2 system.
- Ergonomic ring design: The tracking rings surround the hands rather than functioning like traditional gamepad grips.
- Wrist straps: The included straps help keep the controllers secured during play.
These features belong to the controllers. PS VR2’s eye tracking, headset feedback, OLED displays and 3D-audio support are headset or system features, not capabilities provided by the Sense controllers themselves.
Compatibility: PS5, PS VR2 and older PlayStation VR
The PS VR2 Sense controllers are intended for use with a PS5 console and a PS VR2 headset. PS VR2 requires a PS5 for console-based VR gaming.

They are not compatible with the original PlayStation VR system or PlayStation 4. Original PS VR and PS VR2 content are not interchangeable, and PS VR2 does not use PlayStation Move controllers. Sony’s compatibility guide provides the relevant limitations.
The Sense controllers are also not replacements for a standard DualSense controller. Some PS VR2 games support or require a regular DualSense, while others use the left and right Sense controllers for motion-controlled play. They are not universal controllers for ordinary, non-VR PS5 games.

Do the adaptive triggers work on PC?
PS VR2 can be used with a Windows PC through Sony’s PS VR2 PC adapter and SteamVR, but the PC experience does not reproduce every PS5 feature.
Sony specifically lists the following PS5 features as unavailable through the official PC setup:
- HDR output
- PS VR2 Sense controller haptic feedback
- PS VR2 Sense controller adaptive triggers
- Headset feedback
- Eye tracking
Basic controller vibration is supported on PC, but it is not the same as the full PS5 haptic implementation. In practical terms, buying PS VR2 Sense controllers for PC VR will not provide the adaptive-trigger experience demonstrated on PS5.

PC use requires the PS VR2 headset, Sony’s PC adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable sold separately, a suitable Windows PC, Steam, SteamVR, the PlayStation VR2 App and Bluetooth connectivity for pairing the controllers. See Sony’s PS VR2 PC support page for current requirements.

PS VR2 games can use the Sense controllers for different types of interaction, but feature support varies by title. Sony’s examples include drawing a bow, handling weapons and interacting with objects.
Notable PS VR2 games include Horizon Call of the Mountain, Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Gran Turismo 7, No Man’s Sky, Beat Saber and Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2. The presence of a game on PS VR2 does not by itself guarantee that it uses every controller feature, so check the individual game listing or developer information.

The charging station is an accessory for charging the controllers; it should not be confused with a controller bundle. Sony’s official store page says the charging station is sold separately from the controllers. A current standalone-controller price should be verified on the live regional PlayStation Store page before buying.
What does a buyer need?
For PS5 VR
- A PS5 console
- A PS VR2 headset
- Both PS VR2 Sense controllers, normally included with the headset package
- A compatible PS VR2 game or application
- Enough space for the chosen play style
Room-scale games require a play area of at least 2 metres by 2 metres, or approximately 6 feet 7 inches by 6 feet 7 inches. Seated and standing experiences may have different space requirements.
For PC VR
Add Sony’s PS VR2 PC adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, a compatible Windows PC, SteamVR, the PlayStation VR2 App and Bluetooth. The PC route also involves a significant trade-off: adaptive triggers, full controller haptics, eye tracking, headset feedback and HDR are unavailable through Sony’s official PC configuration.
Who should consider the PS VR2 Sense controllers?
- Existing PS VR2 owners: A replacement controller may make sense after loss or damage, but verify whether a listing is for the left or right controller and whether it is new, refurbished or region-specific.
- PS5 owners considering VR: The normal entry point is a complete PS VR2 package, which already includes both controllers.
- PC VR buyers: PS VR2 can provide access to SteamVR, but it is a poor choice if adaptive triggers or full PS VR2 haptics are the main reason for buying.
- Original PS VR owners: The Sense controllers do not upgrade the original headset. PS VR2 is a separate system with separate content compatibility.
- Players seeking a standard PS5 gamepad: Buy or use a DualSense instead. The Sense controllers are not general-purpose PS5 controllers.
Verdict
The PS VR2 Sense controllers remain notable because they bring dynamic trigger resistance, haptics and finger detection to console VR. However, the news is historical rather than current: Sony revealed them in 2021, named them in 2022 and launched them in 2023.
For PS5 owners, their strongest features appear in supported PS VR2 games. For PC users, the official adapter offers SteamVR access but omits adaptive triggers and full controller haptics. Most new buyers should look for a complete PS VR2 package rather than standalone controllers, since both controllers are normally included.
