If Windows or an old application reports that msident.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. msident.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the legacy IUserIdentityManager Shell interface, historically used by Outlook Express and related identity features.

On supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, install pending updates, restart, then repair Windows with DISM followed by System File Checker. If only an old application fails, repair or reinstall that application from its original installer after checking Windows component health.

What msident.dll is

Microsoft documents Msident.dll as the DLL implementing the legacy IUserIdentityManager interface. That interface could enumerate, identify, log on, log off, and manage Windows user identities.

The component was associated with older Windows, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express installations. Microsoft’s historical security documentation lists it as an x86 Windows system file, with different versions appearing across Windows releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The interface is deprecated and may be altered or unavailable. That matters because a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation is not expected to provide a modern standalone installer for msident.dll. The strongest official error documentation concerns Outlook Express on Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows 2000-era systems.

Is msident.dll part of Microsoft Identity Manager?

No verified evidence connects this DLL to Microsoft Identity Manager 2016.

Microsoft Identity Manager is a separate server product with components such as Synchronization Service and Service and Portal. The similar name causes many DLL listings to misidentify msident.dll, but installing Microsoft Identity Manager is not a normal solution for a Windows application error involving this file.

What usually causes the error

The likely cause depends on what launches the error:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Windows component file is damaged, deleted, or mismatched.
  • An old Outlook Express installation is damaged.
  • A legacy program expects a 32-bit DLL that is unavailable or incompatible.
  • Antivirus software quarantined a file.
  • The application has another missing dependency or is incompatible with current Windows.
  • A private copy of the DLL inside the application folder is damaged.

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not verified sources for msident.dll. Reinstalling those runtimes is therefore not the primary repair path.

Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair system files

This is the safest first fix when the error names a file under the Windows directory or appears after an update, cleanup operation, or system failure.

Install pending Windows updates

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Try the affected program again.

If the error remains, repair the component store and protected system files.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows when the scan completes.
  2. Launch the affected application again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks protected operating-system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available. Microsoft recommends this order in its System File Checker repair guidance.

Running these commands manually can mean repeating scans without knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the built-in repair path.

If DISM says source files cannot be found

Windows may be unable to obtain repair files through Windows Update. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
  /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a legitimate repair source that matches the installed Windows version and edition closely. Do not use a random ISO or a downloaded copy of msident.dll. Microsoft’s repair-a-Windows-image documentation explains the source requirement.

If SFC still cannot repair the file, inspect:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

You can also retry in Safe Mode, use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists, perform an in-place Windows repair, or reinstall Windows after backing up personal data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine a file that an old application expects. This is a diagnostic possibility, not a confirmed common cause for msident.dll.

Check Microsoft Defender history

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Click Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections involving the affected application or Windows directory.

Only restore a quarantined file when Windows Security identifies it as a legitimate Microsoft-signed file in the expected Windows location. If the file came from an unknown application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan instead.

To run a full scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Click Scan now.

After the scan, run DISM and SFC again. Malware damage or an unwanted replacement can leave a DLL present but still unusable.

Fix 3: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit location

A 32-bit application cannot use a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. On 64-bit Windows, the directory names are also easy to misread:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • C:WindowsSystem32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system binaries.

Windows file-system redirection can cause a 32-bit process to see a different system directory from a 64-bit process. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

Do not copy a DLL between System32 and SysWOW64 to test random combinations. Do not overwrite a file with one copied from another PC. Windows build, architecture, servicing state, language, and signature can differ.

Instead:

  1. Identify whether the failing executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Check the error’s named executable in Event Viewer or the application documentation.
  3. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  4. Repair the application using its original installer.
  5. If the application is old, check whether its vendor provides a current build compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Microsoft’s modern file inventory may show an x86 msident.dll under SysWOW64, but third-party inventories are not official package specifications. File versions vary by Windows release.

Fix 4: Repair the application that triggers the message

If Windows itself works normally and only one old program fails, the application may be loading a private copy of msident.dll or may have other damaged dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows’ installed-app repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.
  9. If Repair does not help, choose Reset only after preserving the application’s settings and data.

Some desktop programs do not provide these buttons. In that case, use the application’s original installer and choose Repair, if offered. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer, after backing up saves, profiles, mail stores, and configuration files.

Do not assume that a missing msident.dll means the application should receive a DLL downloaded from a file archive. A reinstall restores the correct files, registry entries, dependencies, and architecture together.

Fix 5: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A graphics or chipset driver is not a verified provider of msident.dll. Driver replacement is relevant only when the same program also reports graphics initialization failures, crashes in a driver module, display problems, or Device Manager errors.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or another relevant category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General and Driver tabs.
  7. Download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer if an update is needed.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not remove a working driver solely because msident.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers with its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that owns the failure.

Fix 6: Check Windows Features carefully

Windows Features will not normally reinstall msident.dll, but checking optional components can help identify a broader legacy-compatibility problem.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review only features that the affected application explicitly requires.
  3. Select OK and restart if Windows makes a change.

Do not enable random legacy features as a DLL repair. Outlook Express was removed from modern Windows, and reinstalling its old binaries is not a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 solution. Microsoft lists it among removed Windows features.

Should you run regsvr32 msident.dll?

Usually, no.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing protected system file, repair its contents, or make a 32-bit DLL compatible with a 64-bit process.

The old Microsoft Outlook Express repair article instructed Windows 98 and Windows Me users to run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 Msident.dll
regsvr32 Msidntld.dll

Those commands belong to that obsolete Outlook Express procedure. A DLL without DllRegisterServer produces a registration error, and using the wrong-bitness regsvr32.exe can create another misleading failure. Do not use this as the standard fix on Windows 10 or Windows 11. The historical errors and repair context are documented by Microsoft Support.

Why DLL download sites are a bad fix

Avoid downloading msident.dll from random DLL websites or copying it from another computer. The file may have:

  • The wrong Windows version.
  • The wrong architecture.
  • A damaged or missing Microsoft signature.
  • Malware or an altered payload.
  • A name that matches the error but does not match the application’s expected dependency.

Manual copying can also hide the real problem, such as a broken Windows component store, an incompatible legacy application, or another missing DLL. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, the original application installer, or a legitimate matching Windows repair source instead.

FAQ

Is msident.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL associated with the legacy IUserIdentityManager Shell interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Microsoft Identity Manager install it?

There is no verified evidence that Microsoft Identity Manager 2016 supplies this DLL. It is a separate server product.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

There is no evidence that these runtimes supply msident.dll. Repair Windows first, then repair the specific application that reports the error.

Should the file be in System32 or SysWOW64?

That depends on architecture. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally for 64-bit binaries and SysWOW64 for 32-bit binaries. Do not move or replace the file manually.

What if only Outlook Express needs it?

Outlook Express is obsolete and removed from current Windows. The old regsvr32 instructions apply only to the historical Windows 98/Me repair context, not to a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

The error remains after DISM and SFC. What next?

Identify the executable named by the error or Event Viewer, check antivirus history, repair or reinstall that application, and test another Windows user profile. The program may be loading a private DLL, missing another dependency, or simply be incompatible with the current version of Windows.
