What winui.dll is
The genuine file is identified in embedded metadata as:

| Property | Identified value |
|---|---|
| File name | winui.dll |
| Company | Electronic Arts, Inc. |
| Product | EA WinUI for Paul.dll |
| Description | Windows UI for PAUL.DLL |
| Typical architecture | Win32/x86 |
| Typical location | The affected game’s installation folder |
The name is easy to confuse with Microsoft’s WinUI framework. They are different. Modern Windows applications using Microsoft’s framework may contain files such as Microsoft.UI.Xaml.dll; that does not make winui.dll a Windows component.
This EA file is associated with the custom SecuROM/PAUL DRM used by some older PC games. Documented examples include The Sims 3, Mass Effect, Mirror’s Edge, and Medal of Honor (2010), although the exact files depend on the game release and installation.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
winui.dll normally sits beside the game executable and paul.dll, often under a folder named Binaries, Bin, or an expansion folder. It should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Public listings show 32-bit versions such as 1.0.0.2 and 1.0.0.3. Other versions have also appeared in game files, but these are not interchangeable builds. A verified 32-bit copy from the exact game release is more useful than a newer-looking file from another source.
Errors caused by a missing or damaged file
You may see one of these messages:
The program can't start because winui.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.winui.dll was not foundCannot find winui.dllwinui.dll could not be locatedwinui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error
The game may instead display an authorization or launch error, including a message that there is a problem connecting to the server. In older EA games, a missing or mismatched DRM file can appear as an activation problem rather than a straightforward DLL error.
Before changing Windows, note the exact game named in the dialog and the path shown by the error. A path inside the game folder points to an application repair. A path inside System32 requires separate Windows diagnosis.
Fix 1: Repair the EA game first
This is the safest and most likely fix because it restores the complete, matching set of game files.
Repair through the EA app
- Open the EA app.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the game’s three-dot menu or Manage icon.
- Choose Repair.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart the EA app, then launch the game again.
The repair process can restore winui.dll and its companion files from the installed game’s own release. If the repair fails, restart Windows and repeat it. Also check that the game drive has free space and that your account can write to the game folder.

Verify through Steam or another launcher
If the game is installed through Steam:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to download or replace damaged files.
- Start the game from the same launcher.
For another launcher, use its equivalent Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command. Do not copy winui.dll from a different EA game. Even when two games use the same DRM family, their winui.dll and paul.dll files may not be compatible.
Recommended Free Tools
If no repair feature is available, uninstall the affected game, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original EA, Steam, disc, or other legitimate installer. Back up saved games first if that release stores saves inside its installation folder.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a game file after an update, reinstall, or scan. A filename associated with EA is not automatically safe, so verify the file’s origin before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Inspect detections recorded near the time the game stopped working.
- If the detection concerns the game’s original installation and you have verified the installer and file location, follow your organization’s malware-review process.
- Restore the file only when you can demonstrate that the detection is a false positive.
- Run the EA app or game launcher repair afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the device. If the detection identifies suspicious behavior, an altered binary, or an untrusted installer, do not restore it. Remove the game and reinstall it from a trusted source.
After restoration, repair the game again so winui.dll and paul.dll come from the same release. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to force the game to start.
Fix 3: Restore matching winui.dll and paul.dll files
Older EA DRM commonly uses winui.dll together with paul.dll. Replacing only one file can leave the game unable to launch or authenticate.

Check the game’s installation directory for both files. Right-click each file, choose Properties, and inspect the Details tab. Compare the company, product, and file-version information with files restored by the official game installer. Metadata helps identify a file, but it does not prove that the file is safe.
If one file is missing or the pair has different origins, do not mix files from other games or arbitrary downloads. Use the launcher repair function or reinstall the exact game release. This is especially important when a game was patched, moved between computers, or restored from an old backup.
A missing-DLL message can also conceal an obsolete activation service. Repairing the local files cannot bring back an unavailable server or make unsupported DRM work on every modern Windows configuration. If repair and reinstall do not help, contact the publisher’s support service or use a legitimate modern edition if one exists. Do not bypass the game’s DRM.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 4: Check permissions and the game folder
A launcher may report success while failing to replace a file because the installation directory is read-only, protected, or owned by another account.
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the game folder.
- Right-click the folder and select Properties.
- Confirm that the drive is available and that the folder is not being synchronized or locked by backup software.
- Start the launcher normally and run its repair function.
- If it still cannot write files, consult the launcher’s logs and check permissions with your administrator.
Do not routinely run an entire game as administrator. Use an elevated launcher only when the publisher’s instructions specifically require it, and return to normal operation afterward.
Fix 5: Consider broader Windows corruption only when symptoms support it
DISM and sfc normally repair Windows components, not an EA game-local DLL. Use them when several unrelated programs fail, Windows features are damaged, or system files are also reporting errors.

- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game’s repair function again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands may repair the Windows component store and protected system files, but they will not normally restore winui.dll to an EA game directory.
If repeatedly hunting component versions and rerunning SFC or DISM is becoming impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it found; repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the EA game remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that game.
Fix 6: Update Windows and investigate drivers only for related failures
A graphics or storage driver does not normally supply winui.dll. Driver work is reasonable when the game also crashes with display errors, the system has disk problems, or several applications fail after a hardware change.
Update Windows
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Storage controllers, and any category marked with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not remove a working driver merely because winui.dll is missing. If the game still fails after a driver update, return to the game repair or reinstall path.
If identifying stale drivers across several devices is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions; the driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing the EA game that owns winui.dll.

Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Those directories are for Windows and shared system components. A private EA dependency belongs in the game’s own directory. System-wide placement can create conflicts and still leave the game with an incompatible companion file.
Do not download a standalone DLL as the first fix
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an altered binary, or a build that does not match paul.dll. They also leave the damaged game installation unresolved. Use the original game installer or launcher repair feature.
Do not install Microsoft WinUI packages for this filename
Microsoft WinUI and winui.dll from an older EA game are unrelated. Installing a modern Windows app framework will not normally provide the EA DRM file.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes a tool for registering DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A game runtime or DRM helper is not automatically a COM component. Running:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
regsvr32 winui.dll
does not restore a missing file and may produce an entry-point error. Use it only when the software vendor explicitly documents that registration is required.
Do not assume redistributables will provide it
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, and Windows Update do not normally install this EA-specific DLL. Reinstall those components only when the error also names one of their files or the game documentation requires them.
FAQ
Is winui.dll a Windows file?
No. The documented winui.dll is an Electronic Arts file associated with older games and EA’s PAUL DRM. It is different from Microsoft’s WinUI technologies.
Which game installed winui.dll?
Documented examples include The Sims 3, Mass Effect, Mirror’s Edge, and Medal of Honor (2010). This is not a complete list, and the exact location varies by game and release. Search installed game folders and launcher libraries rather than guessing from the filename alone.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should winui.dll be in System32?
Normally no. It should be beside the affected game’s executable, often in a Binaries, Bin, or expansion folder.
Do I need to register winui.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair tool, and this game-local file should be restored through the game’s installer or launcher.
Why does the game still show an authorization error after repair?
The local winui.dll and paul.dll files may still be mismatched, or the game’s older activation service may be unavailable or incompatible. Reinstall the exact game release, then contact official support if the authorization problem remains.
When should I use System Restore?
Only when a restore point predates the failure and you accept the application changes it may undo. System Restore is a fallback, not a replacement for repairing or reinstalling the owning EA game.
