What this file actually does
msonpppr.dll is a print-processor DLL associated with the OneNotePrint2007 print processor. Print processors are user-mode components in the Windows printing pipeline: they help prepare print jobs before the Print Spooler sends them to a printer.

Its product association is Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 Printer Driver. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or ordinary Windows-system DLL. Historical installations place it under a spooler print-processor folder similar to:

Do not treat that historical path as a universal installation rule. The file belongs with the Office and printer component that installed it, rather than being copied casually into C:WindowsSystem32.

Historical file databases report an x86 file, along with a particular version and small file size, but those details are not a current Microsoft-published manifest. Do not use a version number alone to decide whether a replacement is safe.
The error may appear as “msonpppr.dll is missing,” “specified module could not be found,” or “the code execution cannot proceed.” The more useful symptom is often that Send to OneNote 2007 has disappeared, printing fails, or spoolsv.exe crashes when the printer is used.
Causes matched to symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error began after Office cleanup or repair | OneNote 2007 printer files were removed or damaged | Repair Office 2007 |
| Send to OneNote 2007 is missing | Printer or print-processor registration is broken | Reinstall the OneNote/Office feature |
| Print Spooler stops when printing | A broken OneNote component or another printer driver | Repair Office, then isolate printer drivers |
| Antivirus lists the file in Protection History | The file was quarantined | Verify the Office installation before restoring it |
| The failure began after a driver or Windows change | A recent system change affected printing | Use System Restore if appropriate |
| Windows itself has several corruption symptoms | Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| You have no Office 2007 media | The legacy component cannot be restored through a standalone DLL | Move to a supported OneNote or Office installation |
Fix 1: Repair Office 2007 or OneNote 2007
This is the most direct repair because msonpppr.dll belongs to the OneNote 2007 printing feature.
- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Microsoft Office 2007 entry.
- Click Change.
- Choose Repair, if that option is offered.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows when it finishes.
- Open a document and check whether Send to OneNote 2007 appears in the printer list.
If Office 2007 is listed but Repair fails, run the setup program from the original Microsoft disc or installation files. Choose the option to modify or reinstall the installation, and ensure OneNote and its Send to OneNote printer feature are included.
Microsoft’s Office 2007 installation guidance explains that the original installation disc and product key may be required. Office 2007 is a legacy, unsupported product, so do not expect a current standalone Microsoft download for this DLL.
The repair worked if the error disappears and the OneNote printer returns. If Office does not appear in Programs and Features, or the installer cannot find its source files, skip to the section about unavailable installation media rather than copying a random DLL.
Fix 2: Confirm the OneNote printer and restart the Print Spooler
A repaired file will not help if the virtual printer registration or spooler state is still broken.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Look for Send to OneNote 2007.
- If it is absent after Office repair, rerun Office setup and modify the installation so the OneNote printing feature is installed.
You can also test from Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
control printersand press Enter. - Check whether the OneNote printer is listed.
- Print a small test document if it is present.
Restart the spooler
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Try printing again.
If the spooler stops immediately, another printer driver may be involved. Remove obsolete or duplicate printers, restart the service, and test the OneNote printer separately.
Clear a stuck queue
Only do this when print jobs are stuck:
- Open
services.msc. - Right-click Print Spooler and choose Stop.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS
- Delete the files inside that folder, not the folder itself.
- Return to Services.
- Right-click Print Spooler and choose Start.
- Test printing.
Microsoft’s printer connection and printing guidance covers this queue-cleaning procedure.
Fix 3: Remove conflicting printer drivers
If Office repair restores OneNote but the Print Spooler still crashes, investigate other printer drivers before blaming msonpppr.dll.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues and Printers.
- Right-click an obsolete or duplicate printer.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm removal, then restart Windows.
- Download and install the current driver from the printer manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Test the physical printer and Send to OneNote separately.
Do not copy an x86 file into a 64-bit print-processor directory, and do not substitute a DLL from another Office release. Legacy print processors can also behave differently on modern 64-bit Windows and ARM devices. The architecture of the old Office component must match the printing environment; a random replacement cannot solve that compatibility problem.
When identifying several stale drivers manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention. Its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it is not a substitute for repairing the Office component that owns msonpppr.dll.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old Office DLL, particularly after a cleanup or scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Find the event involving
msonpppr.dll. - Check its reported location and reason.
- Restore it only when the file is in the expected Office/spooler location and the Office installation is trusted.
- If you are unsure, leave it quarantined and reinstall Office from original Microsoft media.
Microsoft warns that allowing a file can expose the device if it is genuinely malicious. The safer repair for a trusted installation is to reinstall the owning Office feature, which restores the component and its associated registration together. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM repair Windows component corruption. They are useful when the computer has broader Windows problems, but they are not the primary repair for an Office-owned print processor.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Right-click Start.
- Choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer and OneNote again.
A successful result means Windows repaired or found no protected system-file corruption. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after DISM completes and review the result. If the msonpppr.dll error remains unchanged, return to Office repair rather than repeatedly running SFC.
If you prefer not to keep hunting through repair logs and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and identify repair targets. Its free scan shows detected problems, while repair through the full version is optional and cannot replace reinstalling Office when that is the damaged component.
For Microsoft’s procedure, follow Use the System File Checker tool.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when printing worked and the failure started after a driver installation, software cleanup, or system change.
The Tool Desk

- Pick a point from before the failure began.
- Click Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point is suitable.
- Restart and test OneNote printing.
System Restore does not replace a missing Office installation source. It can help when the component or its registration was recently altered. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
Why downloading or registering the DLL is the wrong first move
There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download page for msonpppr.dll. A DLL download sites site may provide the wrong version, wrong architecture, an altered file, or a file without the printer registration and supporting Office components that make it useful.
Do not copy the file into System32, an application folder, or a print-processor directory merely because a generic DLL guide recommends it. Manual copying is reasonable only in a controlled repair using a verified, matching file extracted from the user’s original Microsoft installation media.
regsvr32 msonpppr.dll is also generally not the correct repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer; print processors are normally installed and associated through printer-driver installation. If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that does not prove the DLL is bad.
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not supported by the file’s identity and should not be used as a guess.
If Office 2007 media is unavailable
Do not download the DLL separately. Check whether you still have:
- The original Office 2007 disc
- A legitimate saved Office installation folder
- The matching product key
- An existing system image or backup from when OneNote printing worked
If none is available, the practical solution may be migrating to a supported OneNote or Office version. Modern OneNote uses newer printer implementations, and its printing behavior is not the same as the legacy OneNotePrint2007 path. Microsoft documents current behavior in Print documents and files to OneNote.
FAQ
Is msonpppr.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with the Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 Printer Driver and the OneNotePrint2007 print processor.
Is it a normal printer driver?
It is part of a printer component, specifically a print processor used by the OneNote 2007 virtual printer. It is not a general-purpose hardware driver or Windows runtime.
Should I use SFC to restore it?
Not as the first step. Repair or reinstall Office 2007 first. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself shows corruption or related system failures.
Does a missing file always mean the file was deleted?
No. The file may be present while its dependent component, printer registration, architecture, or Print Spooler configuration is broken.
Does regsvr32 repair OneNote printing?
Usually not. Reinstalling the Office printer feature restores the relevant installation and registration more reliably.
Can modern OneNote restore OneNotePrint2007?
Not necessarily. Current OneNote and the legacy OneNote 2007 printer use different implementations. A modern installation should not be expected to recreate every Office 2007 component.
What is the safest fix?
Use the original Microsoft Office 2007 installation media to repair or reinstall OneNote and its Send to OneNote printer feature, then troubleshoot the Print Spooler if printing still fails.
