Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, identify the software that produced the error.
- Which program displays it? Is it Visual Basic 6.0, an old business application, or an installer for legacy software?
- When does it appear? Does it happen when Windows starts, when you launch an application, or during installation?
- Is the software 32-bit?
pdaddin.dllis a legacy 32-bit VB6 add-in. A 64-bit version is not the correct replacement. - Does the file exist already? Search for
pdaddin.dll, but do not copy a search result intoSystem32orSysWOW64. - Was it recently quarantined? Check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling anything.
pdaddin.dll is the Package and Deployment Wizard add-in from Visual Basic 6.0. It is not a normal Windows system DLL, so the safest repair is usually to repair or reinstall the VB6 tools or the older application that supplied them.

Fix 1: Repair the program that triggered the error
This is the fastest and most reliable fix when an unrelated legacy application reports pdaddin.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the error appears while installing an old application
- Close the installer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the application being installed or repaired.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall, if the partial installation is listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the vendor’s original installer again by right-clicking it and choosing Run as administrator.
- If the installer offers Repair, Modify, or Custom, choose the repair option first.
- If it asks for installation media, use the original disc, ISO, or preserved installer package.
If the error returns at the same point, the installer may be incomplete or damaged. Obtain a newer installer from the original software vendor, if one exists. Do not solve an application installer failure by downloading pdaddin.dll separately.

If the installed application already has a repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from trusted original media. A legacy installer may have included the Package and Deployment Wizard files even though the application itself is not named Visual Basic.
Success looks like: the application or installer opens without the pdaddin.dll message.
If it fails: note the exact application name, the stage at which the error appears, and whether the message says the file is missing, cannot load, or cannot register. That information identifies whether the parent application or the VB6 development tools need repair.
Fix 2: Repair Visual Basic 6.0 and the Package and Deployment Wizard
The normal installation location is:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioVB98WizardsPDWizardPDADDIN.DLL
On 64-bit Windows, the path may instead begin with:
C:Program Files (x86)
The folder and filename may use different capitalization, but Windows treats those as the same file.
The Package and Deployment Wizard was bundled with Visual Basic 6.0 and could be opened from the VB6 Add-Ins menu or the Visual Studio 6.0 Tools menu. It is part of the older development tools, not the ordinary VB6 runtime.
Repair from original VB6 media
- Insert the Visual Basic 6.0 or Visual Studio 6.0 installation media.
- Open This PC in File Explorer.
- Open the installation disc or mounted ISO.
- Right-click
Setup.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, if Setup offers it.
- If Setup offers component selection, ensure the Visual Basic 6.0 tools and Package and Deployment Wizard are selected.
- Complete Setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Check the
VB98WizardsPDWizardfolder again.
Do not assume that installing the VB6 runtime will restore this file. Microsoft distinguishes the supported VB6 runtime from the unsupported VB6 IDE and development tools. The Package and Deployment Wizard belongs to the latter.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft still publishes VB6 Service Pack 6 updates, including the VB6 Service Pack 6 cumulative update and the VB6 Service Pack 6 security rollup. These are updates for an existing compatible installation, not documented standalone replacements for pdaddin.dll.
Success looks like: PDADDIN.DLL exists under the VB6 PDWizard folder and the Package and Deployment Wizard opens from VB6.
If it fails: do not mix a DLL from another computer, language edition, service level, or download archive with your installation. Reinstall the complete matching VB6 tools from the original media instead.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
A legitimate file can disappear after antivirus action, but its name alone does not prove that a file is safe. Verify the original path, installation source, and digital signature before restoring anything.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Open an item that refers to
pdaddin.dll. - Check its original file path and detection details.
- Restore it only when it came from trusted Microsoft or original application installation media.
- If Windows offers Allow on device, select it only after verifying the file.
- Reinstall or repair the parent program afterward if the file is still incomplete.
Microsoft explains the quarantine workflow in its Protection History documentation.
Success looks like: the file returns to the original application or VB6 folder and the program launches.
If it fails: leave the item quarantined and reinstall the parent software from trusted media. If the file repeatedly triggers a detection, stop using that installer and have it checked by the software vendor.
Fix 4: Register the legitimate 32-bit COM add-in
regsvr32 applies here because pdaddin.dll is a COM add-in. It is not a universal fix for missing DLL messages.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst confirm that the file exists in the legitimate VB6 folder. Then open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the command matching the actual file path.
For a 32-bit Windows installation:
regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioVB98WizardsPDWizardpdaddin.dll"
For a 32-bit VB6 installation on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98WizardsPDWizardpdaddin.dll"
If your installation is under another folder, replace the quoted path with that path. Do not place the file in System32 merely because it has a .dll extension.
Success looks like: RegSvr32 reports that registration succeeded, and the Package and Deployment Wizard loads when you reopen VB6.
If it fails: check the spelling and path first. “The specified module could not be found” can indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing pdaddin.dll. Check whether PDWizard.ocx, MSADDNDR.DLL, and other VB6 files are present, then repair the full installation. Registration may need to be repeated for each Windows user because VB6 add-in settings are stored in the current user’s registry hive.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other programs are also failing
Windows component repair will not normally recreate pdaddin.dll. Use it when multiple unrelated applications have missing-file errors, installers fail broadly, or Windows itself appears damaged.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
Success looks like: DISM completes successfully, SFC reports that it repaired or found no integrity violations, and other Windows components work normally.
If it fails: copy the exact result, then return to repairing the application that owns pdaddin.dll. SFC does not prove that this application file has been restored.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slower. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it found before repair; its repair features are handled by the full version, but reinstalling the VB6 parent program remains the definitive fix for this file.

A graphics or chipset driver does not normally provide pdaddin.dll. Driver work is relevant only if the legacy application fails during hardware detection, crashes while accessing a device, or shows other device-related errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- If the device has a warning icon, open Properties and review the Device status message.
- If Windows cannot find a driver, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer or computer manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention; its driver installation features are handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that supplied pdaddin.dll.
Success looks like: Device Manager shows no relevant warning icon and the application proceeds past hardware detection.
If it fails: focus on the application installer and its installation log. A driver update will not create the VB6 Package and Deployment Wizard.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a failed installation, cleanup utility, or system change, System Restore may return the related files and settings to an earlier state.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the results.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore affects system files and settings, not personal documents. Microsoft lists this and other recovery choices in its Windows recovery options.
Success looks like: the original VB6 tool or application opens again.
If it fails: undoing the restore will not repair a missing installer payload. Reinstall the parent application from its original media.
Why you should not download pdaddin.dll
Avoid DLL mirror sites and automated DLL-fix utilities that offer a standalone copy. A downloaded file may have the wrong build, architecture, dependencies, metadata, or malicious modifications. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create conflicts without repairing the damaged installer.
The safe sources are:
- The original Visual Basic 6.0 or Visual Studio 6.0 installation media.
- The original application vendor’s installer or repair package.
- Microsoft’s official VB6 service updates for an existing VB6 installation.
- A trusted, preserved installation image maintained by your organization.
The correct file is the one supplied by the matching installation, not whichever version has the right filename.
Frequently asked questions
Is pdaddin.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Visual Basic 6.0 Package and Deployment Wizard add-in, not a standard Windows component in System32 or SysWOW64.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is pdaddin.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The identified VB6 add-in is 32-bit. It can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but it must be registered with the 32-bit SysWOW64regsvr32.exe tool when appropriate.
Will installing the VB6 runtime fix the error?
Usually not. The runtime and the VB6 IDE tools are separate. Repair or reinstall the Visual Basic 6.0 tools or the legacy application that included the wizard.
Why does an unrelated program mention it?
An older application may have been packaged with Microsoft’s Package and Deployment Wizard, or its installer may be invoking the wizard. Repair that application first.
Should I register every copy I find?
No. Register only the legitimate copy from the matching installation. Multiple copies from unrelated folders can make the problem harder to diagnose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if registration says a module is missing?
The message may refer to a dependency of pdaddin.dll. Repair the full VB6 or application installation and verify related wizard files instead of downloading individual dependencies.
What should I collect before contacting the vendor?
Record the exact application name, the complete error text, when it appears, the installer version or source, the file path if one is shown, and the results of the repair or registration steps. This lets the vendor identify the correct parent package rather than treating pdaddin.dll as a generic Windows file.
