The program can’t start because msvidc32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

msvidc32.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows file, and its description is Microsoft Video 1 Compressor. If Windows says msvidc32.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is corrupt, repair Windows or the affected application instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use the symptom that best matches your situation:

  • Only one old program or game fails: Repair or reinstall that application first. It may have an incomplete private copy or may expect an obsolete Video for Windows component.
  • Several programs fail: Treat this as possible Windows component corruption. Install updates, then run DISM and SFC.
  • The problem began after antivirus action: Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
  • You use Windows N or KN: Install the Media Feature Pack, then restart.
  • The message shows “not designed to run on Windows” or error 0xc000012f: Suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a damaged application installation.
  • The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: Check compatibility and do not swap files between System32 and SysWOW64.
  • The file exists but video still fails: The issue may be an unsupported AVI codec, damaged media, or an application that no longer supports this legacy codec.

What msvidc32.dll actually is

msvidc32.dll is the Microsoft Video 1 Compressor component. Microsoft Video 1 is a legacy video codec associated with the older Video for Windows and Video Compression Manager stack, not a modern runtime such as Visual C++ Redistributable.

Old video editors, capture utilities, AVI tools, and other programs may request it when opening or creating Microsoft Video 1 content. A program can also mention the file during startup if it checks its media components before displaying its main window.

The file is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Its absence does not automatically mean malware, and a quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file was malicious. A genuine Windows copy should come from Windows servicing or trusted Microsoft installation media.

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may use the 32-bit system view exposed through %WINDIR%SysWOW64. Windows uses file-system redirection so 32-bit applications do not necessarily access the same physical directory as 64-bit applications. Do not decide that a file is missing merely because it is not in the folder you expected.

Windows builds also use different file versions and locations. There is no single version or file size that applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

Read the error before changing anything

These messages point to slightly different problems:

msvidc32.dll was not found.
The code execution cannot proceed because msvidc32.dll was not found.
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).

A damaged or incompatible file may produce wording similar to:

msvidc32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
Error status 0xc000012f.

The exact wording can vary. Windows may name the executable, show a full path, or report another status code.

Before repairing anything, note:

  1. The application or game named in the error.
  2. Whether one application or several are affected.
  3. Whether the program is 32-bit.
  4. Whether the issue began after Windows Update, cleanup software, antivirus activity, an uninstall, or moving the program to another drive.
  5. Whether the error names a path inside the application folder rather than a Windows folder.

That last detail matters. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows files, but they do not reliably repair an application’s private copy.

Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair system files

This is the safest general repair when the file is missing from Windows or multiple programs fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
  6. Test the affected application.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
  2. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Launch the affected application again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to check and replace protected system files. Running SFC first can leave it without a healthy source for replacement files.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, the problem may be application-specific, architectural, or related to another dependency. If DISM reports that it could not complete the operation, note the exact message before moving to recovery options.

If repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and interpreting DISM or SFC logs is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its full repair is required to apply fixes, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling an application that owns a private copy.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one program reports msvidc32.dll, the application is often the better place to start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a Microsoft Store or packaged application

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Select Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair, if available.
  8. Start the application again.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset only after confirming that the application’s local settings or saved data are backed up.

Repair a classic desktop application

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find the affected program in Programs and Features.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Select Repair, if the installer provides that option.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows and test the program.

If Repair is unavailable, uninstall the program and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or the original installation media. Avoid repackaged installers that bundle old DLL collections.

For a game, open its official launcher and look for Verify integrity, Verify files, or similar wording. The menu differs by launcher, but file verification is preferable to manually copying msvidc32.dll.

If the error points to a file inside the program’s own directory, reinstalling that program is usually more relevant than replacing a Windows system file. A Windows repair cannot guarantee the integrity of an application-private copy.

Fix 3: Check whether you have Windows N or KN

Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. That can affect older video applications, although Microsoft does not state that every N build exposes this exact DLL after installation of the Media Feature Pack.

Check your Windows edition

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read the Windows specifications section.
  5. Check whether the edition includes N or KN.

Install Media Feature Pack

On supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 N installations:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Select View features.
  5. Search for Media Feature Pack.
  6. Select it.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Select Install.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Test the media application again.

Do not install this feature simply because a normal Home, Pro, or Enterprise edition reports the DLL. It is intended for N editions.

Fix 4: Check Defender Protection history

If the file disappeared immediately after a Microsoft Defender or third-party security alert, check the quarantine record.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from Start.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Open the relevant detection.
  5. Review the original file path, detection name, and publisher information.

Only consider restoring the file if you have confirmed that it is a Microsoft-signed file in its original Windows location and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Do not restore an unsigned DLL just because its filename matches.

If Microsoft Defender quarantined a file and you restore it, Defender can detect it again unless you use Actions > Allow on device. Make that choice only after validating the file and understanding why it was flagged. If the file was in a program folder, reinstalling that program from its official source is safer than restoring an unexplained copy.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The 32 in msvidc32.dll is consistent with its legacy 32-bit codec role. It does not mean that every 64-bit Windows program can load it.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • %WINDIR%System32 contains the native system files used by 64-bit processes.
  • %WINDIR%SysWOW64 is the redirected system directory used by many 32-bit processes.
  • A 32-bit application may see a different system path from a 64-bit command shell.

Do not copy a DLL from System32 to SysWOW64, or the reverse, based only on the directory names. A mismatched module can cause 0xc000007b, a Bad Image error, crashes, or a failure that looks like a missing file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application is very old:

  1. Right-click its shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Try Run this program in compatibility mode for and select the Windows version recommended by the application publisher.
  5. Select Apply and OK.
  6. Test the program.

Compatibility mode does not recreate missing codec components, but it can help an old launcher behave correctly on a newer Windows release.

Fix 6: Update a related display or capture driver only when symptoms point there

msvidc32.dll is not a graphics driver, and Device Manager is not a normal repair method for this DLL. Use driver repair only if the same failure also involves a capture card, webcam, display adapter, video input device, or a device-specific application.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters, Cameras, Sound, video and game controllers, or the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the General tab and read the device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and test the device application.

If a driver update caused the problem, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Do not remove a working device driver merely because msvidc32.dll is named in an application error.

If checking every display, capture, and audio driver manually is the part that is consuming time, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the full version is required to install updates, and a driver update will not replace the application repair when the program itself is damaged.

Why Visual C++ and DirectX are usually not the fix

Visual C++ Redistributable is not the normal source of msvidc32.dll. Install or repair it only when the error also names a runtime such as:

  • MSVCP140.dll
  • VCRUNTIME140.dll
  • MSVCR*.dll

DirectX is also not the default solution. Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtime supplies older DirectX libraries, including components associated with D3DX, XInput, and XAudio. It is not documented as the source of msvidc32.dll.

Match the repair to the filename in the error instead of installing multiple redistributable packages at random.

Why regsvr32 should not be used

Do not run:

regsvr32 msvidc32.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement and export DllRegisterServer. A legacy codec’s availability through Video Compression Manager is not repaired merely by registering its file. An unsuccessful registration can add confusion without restoring codec support.

Never download a replacement DLL from a random site

Third-party DLL download pages can provide:

  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong architecture
  • A modified or malicious file
  • A file with missing dependencies
  • A copy that does not match Windows component servicing

Even a clean-looking replacement may fail because the real problem is a damaged application, missing media technology, obsolete codec selection, or a corrupted component store.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the Media Feature Pack for eligible N editions, the application’s official installer, or trusted Microsoft installation media instead.

If DISM and SFC report no problem

When Windows servicing completes successfully but the application still fails, work through these checks:

  1. Confirm whether the error names the application directory or a Windows directory.
  2. Repair or reinstall the affected program.
  3. Use the program’s official file-verification feature if it is a game.
  4. Check whether the application is 32-bit.
  5. Check whether the program expects an obsolete Video for Windows codec.
  6. Test another AVI or video file to rule out damaged media.
  7. Check whether the application has its own codec-selection or capture-device settings.
  8. Review the full error path and any additional missing DLL named after msvidc32.dll.

A modern media player may not support every Microsoft Video 1 file, even when Windows contains the relevant legacy component. Restoring the DLL does not guarantee that every old AVI will play in every current application.

Last-resort Windows recovery

Use deeper recovery only when Windows itself shows broader corruption and the normal repair path fails.

System Restore

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open it.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Confirm the restore.

System Restore is most useful when a suitable restore point predates the failure. It does not replace personal backups.

Reinstall Windows 11 using Windows Update

On supported Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings according to Microsoft’s recovery process. Back up important data first.

If storage errors are suspected, review the SFC and DISM results and check drive health. Use chkdsk only when there are signs of filesystem problems, not as a routine response to every missing DLL message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent the error from returning

  • Keep Windows updated and restart after major servicing.
  • Keep installers for old applications and their original media.
  • Use official launcher file verification instead of replacing individual DLLs.
  • Review antivirus Protection history before restoring quarantined files.
  • Avoid registry cleaners and DLL download sites.
  • Keep backups before uninstalling old capture or editing software.
  • Record the full error path when a program fails.
  • Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit system files.

FAQ

Is msvidc32.dll a virus?

No. It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component named Microsoft Video 1 Compressor. A copy with the right filename can still be unsafe if it came from an untrusted location, so verify its path and Microsoft signature before restoring a quarantined file.

Where should msvidc32.dll be located?

The location depends on Windows architecture, build, and the process requesting it. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may access the redirected SysWOW64 view. Do not assume that one folder or one file version applies to every computer.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not for msvidc32.dll alone. Consider Visual C++ only if the error also names a Visual C++ runtime such as MSVCP140.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll.

Will DirectX restore msvidc32.dll?

DirectX is not the normal source of this file. Start with Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or repair of the affected application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix it with regsvr32?

No. Registration is not the normal repair mechanism for this legacy codec component.

Why does the error remain after SFC and DISM?

The application may use a private copy, have an obsolete codec configuration, be damaged, or be failing on another dependency. Repair or reinstall the affected program and inspect the complete error path.

Does Windows N cause this problem?

It can affect older media applications because N editions omit media technologies. Install the Media Feature Pack through Optional features, restart, and test again. Microsoft does not establish that every N build restores this exact DLL.

Is a missing DLL proof that Windows is infected?

No. The file may have been deleted, quarantined, damaged, or requested by an old application. Verify the source and signature rather than judging the file by its name alone.
