The Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY Prerelease ran June 6–12, 2025, ahead of the tabletop release on June 13, 2025. Those dates have passed, but the set’s Sealed format remains useful to understand if you’re playing its Limited events or building a deck from Play Boosters. The core approach: build a reliable 40-card deck from the cards you open, prioritize strong threats and removal, and use the set’s two-color themes as guidance—not as a reason to force a weak build.

What happened at a FINAL FANTASY Prerelease?

A Prerelease is an early play event for a new Magic set. At the FINAL FANTASY event, each player opened a Prerelease Pack and built a 40-card Sealed deck, then played against other attendees. Wizards’ Prerelease Guide describes the event as building “a 40-card sealed deck and facing off against your fellow Prerelease attendees.”

The FINAL FANTASY Prerelease Pack contained six FINAL FANTASY Play Boosters, one traditional foil year-stamped rare or mythic rare, a deck box, and a spindown die. One in 20 packs contained a special acrylic spindown die, according to Wizards’ 2025 guide. The store provided basic lands for deck construction.

Wizards’ current Prerelease FAQ estimates that most events take four to five hours, including deck building, pairings, and breaks. That is a general estimate, not a FINAL FANTASY-specific duration guarantee.

What should you bring, and do you need your own cards?

You did not need a personal card collection to play in this event: the Prerelease Pack supplied the cards for your pool, and the store supplied basic lands. The official FAQ says beginners and returning players can ask store staff or other attendees for help building. Bring any personal items you prefer for playing, and check with the store about its registration details and event logistics.

How to build a 40-card Sealed deck

Build from the cards you actually opened rather than choosing a favorite character or color pair first. Your goal is a deck with enough playable cards, useful ways to win, answers to opposing threats, and mana that lets you cast its spells consistently.

  1. Sort the pool. Group cards by color and set multicolor, colorless, and land cards aside. This makes the depth and quality of each color easier to judge.
  2. Identify your best ways to win. Look for strong creatures, powerful Equipment, and high-impact spells. A deck needs threats that can make progress toward ending the game.
  3. Find interaction. Check for removal and other cards that can answer an opponent’s dangerous creatures or permanents. A tempting theme is less useful if the resulting deck cannot respond to threats.
  4. Choose a likely two-color base. Compare the strongest cards and synergies across colors, while checking that your pool contains enough playable cards and that your mana can support the colored costs. A focused two-color deck is often more reliable to cast than a build that stretches across too many colors.
  5. Build to 40 cards. Use the available playables to form a complete Sealed deck, then review whether the threats, interaction, synergies, and mana work together. The official guide recommends considering those qualities together rather than relying on a color-pair label.

Which FINAL FANTASY Limited themes should you look for?

Wizards’ Prerelease Guide presents these two-color themes as signposts for the set’s Limited archetypes. They can help you spot synergies in a pool, but they do not guarantee that every Sealed pool will support the named pair.

Color pair Limited theme
White-blue Artifacts, including artifact creatures, Equipment, and Treasures
Blue-black Reanimation
Black-red Discard synergies
Red-green Creatures with power 4 or greater
Green-white Quests
White-black Sacrifice synergies
Blue-red Spells
Black-green Graveyard interactions
Red-white Equipment and aggression
Green-blue Town ramp and land value

If two builds look viable, weigh threat quality and ability to close games, removal and interaction, synergy, mana reliability, and the number of playable cards available for a stable 40-card deck. These are comparison factors, not a proven ranking of the archetypes.

Are Through the Ages cards legal in FINAL FANTASY Sealed?

Yes. FINAL FANTASY Play Boosters contain cards from the main set (FIN) and FINAL FANTASY Through the Ages (FCA); cards from both are playable in FINAL FANTASY Draft and Sealed when opened from Play Boosters. Do not exclude a card from your pool just because it comes from the bonus sheet. The Commander product uses the separate set code FIC.

For product details, Wizards’ collecting article and the official set page provide set information. Current availability of products and events can change; check a local game store or current official listings rather than assuming the 2025 event window is still open.

How does job select work in Limited?

Job select is a triggered ability on some Equipment. When an Equipment with job select enters, its controller creates a 1/1 colorless Hero creature token and attaches that Equipment to the token. The Equipment continues to function according to its printed abilities, and it can later be attached to another creature using its equip ability. As with any rules-sensitive interaction, check the full text of the individual card and the current rules. Wizards rules manager Matt Tabak explains the mechanic in the FINAL FANTASY mechanics article.

Can you still attend the FINAL FANTASY Prerelease?

The official Prerelease window was June 6–12, 2025, and tabletop release followed on June 13, 2025, so the original event has passed. If you’re looking for a current event featuring the set, check local store listings; availability depends on the store and its schedule.
