Magic senior communications manager Blake Rasmussen called the question “not a good question” and said creators would not be punished for negative opinions.
What the reported survey asked
Wargamer reported that an October 15, 2025 survey asked: “To what degree did negative influencer commentary impact your perception of Magic: The Gathering/Marvel’s Spiderman before the set released?” Respondents reportedly rated the effect from one, “greatly worsened my perception,” to five, “greatly improved my perception.” The wording and scale are reported by Wargamer; the original survey instrument was not reviewed, so this should not be taken as the complete questionnaire.
The question concerned respondents’ perceptions before release and the possible influence of negative commentary. It was not simply a question about whether they liked the finished set.
Why the wording drew criticism
The phrasing singled out “negative” influencer commentary and could be read as placing responsibility for unfavorable perceptions on creators. That explains the concern reported around the question, but it does not establish that Wizards intended to blame creators or influence their opinions. Discussion on Reddit reflected varied community reactions, but it is anecdotal rather than representative evidence.

What Wizards said in response
Popverse reported that Rasmussen responded on Bluesky, saying Wizards does not punish creators for negative opinions, “even very negative” ones. He also said the result of this particular question would not be used “as a lever to attack creator or change our creator strategy.” Rasmussen added that surveys are taken holistically and that player voices had been heard, according to Popverse’s account.
Wargamer separately reported that Rasmussen apologized for the phrasing, called it “not a good question,” and said he would look into how it happened. His comments address the question and how its results would be used; they do not disclose who wrote it or why it was included.

What the available reporting does not establish
- The survey’s sample size, respondent profile, response distribution, and full branching logic are not established in the cited coverage.
- No verified result shows how many respondents were influenced by creators, or whether the set’s sales were affected.
- Online discussion cannot be treated as a representative measure of player opinion, and the reported wording alone does not prove Wizards’ motive.
The controversy is about a reported question in a post-release survey, not Wizards’ separate “Player Survey” support page. That page, updated July 7, 2026, describes research into tabletop players who generally do not attend events and tournaments; it is not evidence about the Spider-Man survey.

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man was announced for release on September 26, 2025, as the beginning of a multi-year collaboration with Marvel. Wizards listed products including Play Boosters and Collector Boosters in its product announcement. Those details provide release context; they do not establish current stock or pricing.

At release, Wizards’ September 5, 2025 release notes listed SPM-coded cards as permitted in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Commander, and other formats. That is historical release-time guidance, not confirmation of current format legality; the notes themselves caution that later rules updates may make the information outdated.
