If Modern Warfare II shows “Failed to fetch inventory” with “KADENA – MERRILL,” first check Activision’s live service status and your platform’s status. The message appears in player reports during connection trouble, but Activision’s reviewed support materials do not define that reason code or establish one cause. If services are operating normally, test your platform connection and work through basic network checks.
What does “Failed to Fetch Inventory” mean in MW2?
The message indicates that the game could not fetch or load inventory. Players have reported it with the reason text “KADENA – MERRILL,” including reports dated June 13, 2023, and August 29, 2025. Those reports are anecdotal: some described trouble affecting multiple players, platforms, or games, but they are not official incident reports and do not establish the cause of your particular error. Activision’s MWII support guidance does not explain “KADENA – MERRILL” as a specific code or document a universal fix. Treat it as a connectivity symptom to investigate, not proof that your account, inventory, or home network is at fault.
How to troubleshoot the error
- Check game and platform status. Open Activision Online Services, select Modern Warfare II, and check the relevant platform’s status as well. Status can change; this article does not assert whether an outage is active. Activision’s MWII connection guidance recommends checking services first. Activision: Connecting to a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Game
- If there is an alert or outage, wait and retry after services recover. Local router changes are unlikely to resolve a service-side problem. Check the status page again before trying other steps.
- If status is clear, test your platform’s connection.
- PlayStation: Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection.
- Xbox: Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Network settings → Test network connection.
If the test reports a fault, address that connection issue using your platform’s guidance before returning to the game.
- Try basic network checks. Activision suggests restarting your router, reducing bandwidth-heavy activity on the network, and using wired Ethernet where practical. These are general online-connection recommendations, not a confirmed cure for this inventory message.
- Consider advanced router settings only if the problem persists. Activision’s general guide covers testing UPnP and port forwarding, and testing a console in the router’s DMZ. A DMZ test is an advanced troubleshooting step, not a routine fix; remove the console’s static IP from the DMZ afterward. Change one setting at a time and test the game after each change, stopping when the connection works.
- Escalate if the error continues. Check the Modern Warfare II support index for its connection-troubleshooting and Known Issues pages, then contact Activision or your platform’s support if you still cannot connect.
How to tell whether the issue is widespread

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II - PlayStation 5
- Call of Duty: Modern Wafare II PS5
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the sequel to 2019’s blockbuster Modern Warfare.
- Featuring the return of the iconic, team leader Captain John Price, the fearless John "Soap" MacTavish, the seasoned Sergeant Kyle "Gaz” Garrick, and the lone wolf himself, fan favorite Simon “Ghost” Riley, players will witness what makes Task Force 141 the legendary squad it is today.
- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
- Several players or platforms report trouble at once: Check Activision and platform status before changing your home network. Community reports can indicate that others are affected, but they do not confirm an official outage.
- An official service alert is present: Wait for the service to recover and retry. Keep local router settings unchanged unless you have a separate connection problem.
- Status appears normal, but your platform test fails: Focus on the platform or local network connection.
- Status appears normal and the platform test succeeds: Try the basic network checks, then consult Activision’s MWII support pages if the message remains.
Does restarting the game fix it?
Player reports disagree: some say restarting eventually helped, while others say repeated restarts did not. A restart is reasonable to try after checking service status, but it is anecdotal rather than an official or reliable fix. Reddit: r/ModernWarfareII; Reddit: r/MWZombies
