Start with the M4 (level 14) and ISO Nightshade (level 4) when both are available: that pairing covers medium lanes and close interiors, which is exactly what a first DMZ deployment needs. Before level 14, use the Han 86 (level 4) with the ISO Nightshade (level 4) instead. Two primary weapons are legal in DMZ, so a pistol is not required as your planned backup. The current consensus still places the Han 86 first for Operator fights, but the 28 October 2026 Season 1 patch reduced its torso multipliers and improved the M4. Against AI contracts, current PvE rankings put the M4 ahead of the Han 86.

The practical answer changes at level 14. From level 4 through level 13, equip Han 86 (level 4) + ISO Nightshade (level 4). At level 14, move to M4 (level 14) + ISO Nightshade (level 4) for the most forgiving all-purpose kit, especially when your deployments are contract-focused. NoobFeed’s concise answer is: “The M4 paired with the ISO Nightshade provides balanced medium-range and close-range combat capabilities.”
That recommendation is not a claim that one rifle wins every situation. DMZ combines hostile AI, other Operators, bosses, objectives and extraction routes on the Hajin map. An assault rifle handles streets and sightlines; an SMG handles rooms, stairwells and the final extraction push. Carrying two primaries is permitted, so replacing a planned pistol with a second weapon gives a new player a useful range split.

Why the recommendation has two stages
- Levels 4–13: Han 86 (level 4) is available immediately after the early unlock and is the leading long-range choice in current DMZ lists. ISO Nightshade (level 4) supplies close-range damage.
- Level 14 onward: M4 (level 14) becomes the easier all-round AR for AI work and received a range buff in Season 1. Keep ISO Nightshade (level 4) as the indoor and extraction weapon.
- Do not spend heavily before extraction: begin with recovered loot guns or the inexpensive Budget recipe until you can consistently leave with contraband and cash.
What changed in the 28 October 2026 Season 1 patch?
The 28 October patch changed 15 weapons—nine buffs and six nerfs—so pre-patch “best gun” advice is stale. The figures below are CODMunity’s independent DMZ data and patch transcription, not an official Activision telemetry table.
Patch callout — 28 October 2026: Han 86 remains the safest long-range beginner AR, now without the torso-multiplier crutch. The M4 is the patch winner for players at level 14 or higher.
| Weapon | Season 1 change | Current 10–40 m TTK | Pre-patch seven-day page-view pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Han 86 (level 4) | Maximum damage range 1120→1200; neck and upper-torso multipliers 1.1→1.0 | 329 ms | 27% (21–27 Oct) |
| M4 (level 14) | Maximum damage range 990→1020 | 335 ms | 19.1% (21–27 Oct) |
| ISO Nightshade (level 4) | Left/right arm and hand multipliers 0.95→1 | 400 ms | 8.4% (pre-patch) |
| PPSh-41 (level 27) | ADS-in speed 300→280 ms; movement 4.66→4.70 m/s; sprint 6.18→6.21 m/s; arm/hand multipliers 0.95→1 | 370 ms | Not stated |
| Kastov 762 (level 34) | Maximum damage range 950→1050 | 317 ms | Not stated |
| X-58 Nyx (level 34) | Head multiplier 1.25→1.3; arm/hand multipliers 0.95→1; Void Apex range 437→460 | 462 ms | Not stated |
CODMunity’s post-patch 29 October–4 November in-game pick-rate field was marked Pending, so no later percentage should be invented. The current 34.5% Han 86 share is the DMZ hub’s reported pick share, not official Activision usage telemetry.
Which weapons are actually easiest to unlock?
Unlock order matters more than a theoretical damage ceiling when every failed deployment costs time and equipment. The following levels are the practical progression for a new account.
| Weapon | Player unlock | Useful beginner role | Handling note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Han 86 (level 4) | 4 | Long-range AR and first budget primary | Easy recoil; strongest current DMZ consensus pick |
| ISO Nightshade (level 4) | 4 | Close-range SMG | Consistent inside buildings |
| Rezi 12 (level 4) | 4 | Close-range shotgun | Best shotgun on the current PvE/PvP lists |
| MAR-9 (level 4) | 4 | Beginner marksman rifle | Semi-automatic recoil is manageable |
| KG-7 Vulcan (level 4) | 4 | Sniper-curious second primary | High fire rate, lower damage than standard snipers |
| Type 73 (level 9) | 9 | AI-heavy LMG | Large sustained-fire capacity; slower handling |
| VEL 46 (level 13) | 13 | Not recommended as a DMZ starter | Strong in 6v6, weak in current DMZ consensus |
| M4 (level 14) | 14 | All-round AR | Recoil-friendly and now range-buffed |
| PPSh-41 (level 27) | 27 | Aggressive SMG | Drum magazine shreds armor at short range |
| Kastov 762 (level 34) | 34 | High-damage AR | Requires vertical-recoil control |
| X-58 Nyx (level 34) | 34 | Beginner-friendly alternative SMG | Easy to manage, slower listed TTK than leading options |
| Axion (level 52) | 52 | Late-game AR experiment | Not a beginner DMZ weapon |
Game8 lists the M4 at player level 14, with a maximum gun level of 72, a 30-round magazine and 90-round reserve. Private Match → Create a Class lets you inspect or test weapons without player-level restrictions, but that does not unlock them for DMZ deployments.
How should you build the first-hours Han 86 loadout?
Use the WZStats Budget concept: Han 86 (level 4) with the low-cost loadout and backpack option, listed as +2. The objective is reliable extraction, not a fully optimized Gunsmith screen.

- Add the Hanbit RK8 406mm barrel.
- Use the FSS Fireline Grip underbarrel.
- Install the 60 Round Drum.
- Finish with the SZ SRE-7 optic.
The 60-round drum extends sustained fire against AI and armor, while the recoil-focused parts make longer bursts easier to keep on target. Pair it with ISO Nightshade (level 4); the PPSh-41 (level 27) is not an honest first-unlock recommendation even though it is the more aggressive pairing later.

- XRK Herder 40 muzzle.
- ZLR Carbon-900 barrel.
- FSS Tac90 Grip underbarrel.

This arrangement prioritizes close-range consistency without making the weapon sluggish when you enter a building or defend an extraction zone.

What is the best M4 loadout after level 14?
The M4 (level 14) is the default upgrade once it is unlocked. WZStats places it first against AI, and the 28 October range buff increased its maximum damage range from 990 to 1020. Game8 lists 30 rounds in the magazine, 90 in reserve and a maximum gun level of 72.
M4 (level 14) DMZ attachments
- FSS IS300 muzzle.
- 16" Highmark Barrel.
- FSS Fireline Grip underbarrel.
- 60 Round Drum.
- SZ SRE-7 optic.
NoobFeed describes this configuration as a recoil-stability and ammunition-capacity build. Keep ISO Nightshade (level 4) in the second primary slot for rooms, stairwells and the extraction fight. The M4’s standard five-attachment build is preferable to chasing an advanced kit during your first week.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why not start with the M4 Hurricane Apex?
The M4 Hurricane is a 5.7x28mm variant designed to be lighter and faster, but it blocks the barrel and magazine slots, some high-magnification optics and 5.56 NATO High Velocity ammunition. GameSpot notes that Apex attachments unlock only at maximum weapon level and that they do not consume one of the five standard attachment slots. That makes the Hurricane a later experiment, not a level-14 survival plan.
What is the best weapon for Operator fights?
For PvP, the Han 86 (level 4) remains the consensus leader after the nerf. LoadoutVault averaged five post-launch DMZ lists and gave it a 1.0 average rank, appearing first in all five. CODMunity’s DMZ hub reports a 34.5% pick share for the Han 86 Long Range build, with share code A03-Y1JWU-UKN91-1 (CODMunity, checked 28 October 2026).
The important qualification is that the neck and upper-torso multipliers are now 1.0 rather than 1.1. Its longer damage range and manageable recoil still make it forgiving, but it no longer receives extra torso damage. Destructoid described it as having great range and easy recoil control; that is the useful beginner advantage that survived the patch.
The M4 (level 14) is a close second for Operators and a better first choice when most of your time is spent on contracts. LoadoutVault’s five-list average is 3.2, while CODMunity lists a 335 ms 10–40 m TTK after the range buff. The Han 86’s corresponding listed figure is 329 ms, a small difference that does not erase the M4’s accessibility or PvE advantage.
Operator-focused secondary choices
- PPSh-41 (level 27): use it with Han 86 (level 4) or M4 (level 14) once unlocked. Its massive drum is an armor shredder at short range, and the patch improved ADS-in speed and limb multipliers. Its limited range demands discipline.
- ISO Nightshade (level 4): the easiest early close-range partner and WZStats’ number-one PvE SMG.
- X-58 Nyx (level 34): a later alternative whose head and limb multipliers improved, though its listed 10–40 m TTK is 462 ms.
Which loadout is best for AI contracts?
Use a PvE kit rather than copying an Operator-hunting tier list. WZStats’ PvE board puts M4 (level 14) first among ARs, ISO Nightshade (level 4) first among SMGs and Type 73 (level 9) first among LMGs. AI density rewards ammunition sustain and predictable recoil more than a headline PvP TTK.
Standard contract kit: M4 (level 14) + ISO Nightshade (level 4)
The M4’s 60-round drum reduces reload exposure while fighting groups, and ISO Nightshade clears interiors. This is the recommended kit for learning Hajin’s routes, completing objectives and practicing extractions.

AI-heavy operation kit: Type 73 (level 9) + X-58 Nyx (level 34)
NoobFeed recommends the Type 73 for AI-heavy operations because of sustained fire and magazine size. Prioritize a recoil-control compensator, stability grip, reflex sight, recoil-control stock and bullet-velocity barrel; the source does not establish specific part names for those categories. Carry X-58 Nyx (level 34) for rooms and movement between compounds. Type 73 has a handling penalty, so avoid sprinting into every fight.
Destructoid places Type 73 in A-tier and warns about handling. Do not substitute APOC-338: its recoil is described as a beginner nightmare, and it was also nerfed on 28 October.
How do you build an aggressive close-range loadout?
At level 27, use M4 (level 14) + PPSh-41 (level 27) for the WZStats Extreme Threat recipe, listed as +5 loadout and backpack. The combination keeps an AR for streets and a drum-fed SMG for pushes through buildings. NoobFeed also identifies Han 86 (level 4) + PPSh-41 (level 27) as an aggressive pairing.
PPSh-41’s 370 ms listed 10–40 m TTK, improved 280 ms ADS-in speed and 4.70 m/s movement speed reward decisive entries. Its range limit is the trade-off: do not challenge a long lane with it when the Han 86 or M4 is available.
Is a shotgun or sniper a good beginner choice?
Close-range specialist: Rezi 12 (level 4)
Rezi 12 is WZStats’ number-one shotgun and averages rank 7.4 across the five-list DMZ comparison. Destructoid calls it the best shotgun and a strong close-range option; VGC notes that only two shotguns launched and identifies Rezi 12 as the pick. Pair it with Han 86 (level 4) if you want a long-range answer, but accept that the shotgun leaves you exposed across open ground.
Do not choose Warlord (level 32) as a beginner shortcut. Although CODMunity’s DMZ module shows a 4.6% pick share, WZStats now places it in D-tier after the 12 Gauge Slug mid-range damage reduction from 900 to 810.

Sniper-curious kit: KG-7 Vulcan (level 4) + ISO Nightshade (level 4)
WZStats labels this Sniper Lover and rates it +6. KG-7 Vulcan unlocks at level 4; Destructoid describes it as a lower-damage, higher-fire-rate sniper, while GameSpot calls it a mobile bolt-action option. It is a specialist choice, not the fastest way to learn close and medium engagements.
How do the main beginner guns compare?
Use range, control, ammunition and mode—not a single “best” badge—to choose a replacement when a weapon is unavailable.

CODMunity’s EaseScore comes from its multiplayer hub and is only a handling reference, not a DMZ ranking. The DMZ ladder and the PvE ladder can disagree because Operators and AI present different target behavior and engagement patterns.
How much DMZ Cash should a beginner spend?
Spend almost nothing until you can extract consistently. WZStats’ recipe labels show the relative burden: Budget Han 86 (level 4) is +2 loadout and backpack; All Rounder M4 (level 14) is +7; Extreme Threat M4 (level 14) + PPSh-41 (level 27) is +5; Sniper Lover KG-7 Vulcan (level 4) + ISO Nightshade (level 4) is +6. The page groups cash filters at $10,000, $20,000 and $30,000-plus.

Weapon choice is only half of a DMZ loadout. NoobFeed’s DMZ-specific equipment recommendations are built around concealment, replenishment and surviving the exit.
- Tactical: Smoke Grenades to cross exposed ground, break line of sight or cover a revive and extraction.
- Lethal: Sticky Grenades for clearing enemies from rooms and corners.
- Field upgrade: Armor Box or Munitions Box; choose armor when plates are the limiting resource and munitions when a contract is consuming ammunition.
- Armor plates: carry extras whenever the inventory allows. A 60-round drum does not replace plates after a bad push.
Multiplayer perk packages such as Ghost, Ninja, Tracker, Fast Hands or Battle Hardened should not be copied into DMZ automatically; the cited recommendations are multiplayer context, not a DMZ rule set. In DMZ, complementary weapons and an extraction plan matter more than a fashionable six-versus-six setup.
Which weapons should beginners skip?
Several guns are popular elsewhere but are poor first investments in DMZ.
Recommended Free Tools
- Axion (level 52): a late-unlock multiplayer favorite, but Destructoid places it in C-tier for DMZ and LoadoutVault gives it a 16.2 average rank.
- Kastov 762 (level 34): high damage and a range buff, but its vertical recoil demands practice. Save it until the M4 (level 14) or Han 86 (level 4) feels automatic.
- APOC-338: high damage cannot offset the recoil warning for beginners, and the rifle was nerfed in Season 1.
- Oden (level 39): nerfed and placed low by the current DMZ boards.
- VEL 46 (level 13): CODMunity’s DMZ module shows 13.1%, but Destructoid rates it C-tier, WZStats puts it C-tier in PvP and D-tier in PvE, and LoadoutVault’s average rank is 17. Its popularity is mainly a 6v6 signal, not a DMZ beginner verdict.
- Hyeon Burst (level 21): its 8.6% DMZ pick share preceded a 28 October Hyperburst Apex max-damage nerf from 37 to 34; burst timing is an unnecessary complication for a first kit.
- Launchers: PILA, RPG-8, JOKR and PM-40 Anvil are in Destructoid’s C-tier DMZ group and leave too many ordinary engagements uncovered.
- Planned pistol pairings: DMZ allows two primary weapons. A pistol can be a fallback, but it should not replace the second primary in the default beginner plan.
How we picked these beginner loadouts
The selection uses post-launch DMZ rankings published from 20 October 2026 onward, the 28 October Season 1 balance changes, unlock levels, recoil accessibility, range coverage, ammunition sustain, cash burden and the distinction between PvE contracts and PvP Operator fights. LoadoutVault’s five-source averages, WZStats’ PvP and PvE ladders, CODMunity’s dated DMZ hub data, and the beginner attachment guidance from NoobFeed and Destructoid were weighted according to the task each source measures. No official Activision weapon-TTK study or in-game pick-rate table is available, so independent figures are identified as such.
Frequently asked questions
Can I practice an M4 build before reaching level 14?
Yes. Game8 says Private Match → Create a Class lets you inspect weapons without player-level restrictions. That practice does not unlock the M4 for DMZ, but it can teach recoil and sight placement before the real unlock.

Why does the best PvE gun differ from the best PvP gun?
AI contracts create repeated waves and longer ammunition demands, which is why WZStats places M4 (level 14), ISO Nightshade (level 4) and Type 73 (level 9) at the top of its PvE categories. Operator rankings emphasize human movement, armor breaks and range duels, where Han 86 (level 4) remains the leading consensus choice.
When should I start using Apex attachments?
Wait until the specific weapon reaches maximum gun level. Apex kits unlock only then, and some kits remove ordinary barrel or magazine choices, so a standard five-attachment build is usually more useful while learning DMZ.
Is the Han 86 still good after its nerf?
Yes, but its advantage is now range and controllable recoil rather than extra neck or upper-torso damage. The 28 October change reduced both multipliers from 1.1 to 1.0, while the maximum damage range increased from 1120 to 1200.
