For a solo Commander hunt in MW4 DMZ, build for sustained damage, a long fight without a teammate revive, and an exit after other Operators hear the battle. A practical setup is a Type 73 LMG with a suppressor and 100-round box, a close-range secondary, at least a 2-Plate Carrier, a Self-Revive Kit, two Medkits, an ammo supply, and a Secure Slot for the loot you need to extract. Swap in a PILA or RPG-8 for the Tank; a captured SAM site is the official counter to Deathstalker.
The crucial distinction is that killing a Commander is not enough: its 3D Printer Ingredients count as a reward when you extract. Commanders roam Hajin, cannot be bought as Boss Board intel, and can draw AI, rival Operators, or Hunt Squads. Treat the fight as an extraction run with a boss in the middle—not as a copied Multiplayer class or a kill at any cost.

What should a solo Commander loadout include?
Start with survival and ammunition, then pick a weapon for the target. Activision describes Commanders as “seemingly impervious against many standard weapons,” and warns that engaging one can attract nearby forces, rival Operators, and squads hunting the same target. The recommended Type 73 setup is a Commander-fight choice; the Han 86 remains a strong general-purpose DMZ weapon, but a popular Multiplayer build is not automatically a boss build.
| Slot or need | Solo recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Type 73 LMG with suppressor, 100-round box, and armor-piercing ammunition if available; use a recovered Han 86 with a 60 Round Drum if that is the gun you have. | Longer firing windows and fewer reload interruptions help against a durable target. Suppression can help keep optional engagements from drawing AI before the boss fight starts. |
| Second weapon | ISO Nightshade, PPSh-41, or X-58 Nyx for close-range Operators; Oris 8.6 or another marksman rifle if you prefer headshots and flinch. | A Commander fight can attract players. Your second weapon should cover a different threat than the LMG. |
| Target-specific damage | PILA or RPG-8 with ammunition for the Tank; capture a SAM site for Deathstalker. | The Tank is a vehicle target, and the SAM battery automatically targets enemy aircraft while under your control. |
| Protection | 2-Plate Carrier minimum; 3-Plate if available. Do not begin the fight on one plate. | You need room to absorb damage from the boss, AI, and any third party. |
| Recovery and sustain | Self-Revive Kit, at least two Medkits, plates, and an Armor Box if you can craft or loot one. | There is no teammate to pick you up, and a drawn-out engagement can exhaust supplies. |
| Backpack and utility | Medium backpack or better with a Secure Slot; parachute, gas mask, smoke, Thermite, C4, Molotov, or Drill Charge; Munitions Box. | Protect keys, manuals, or ingredients, and keep options for repositioning, replenishing, or leaving. |
| Traits | Survivalist 9 and Warfighter 9: Consumable Duration, Free Revive, Die Hard; Combat Resistance, Quick Fix, Possum. | This prioritizes solo recovery, resilience, and repeat engagements rather than teammate-only revive benefits. |
The loadout screen is not Multiplayer Create-a-Class. DMZ has two weapon slots, and either can hold a primary or secondary; it also has separate slots for Plate Carrier, Self-Revive, Headgear, Tactical, Lethal, Backpack, Field Upgrade, Fire Support, Parachute, Dog Tag, and a Mission Item that fills automatically. Armor plates do not sit in the pre-infil loadout stash: your Armor slot fills automatically on spawn, while extra plate capacity comes from Traits or an Armor Box Field Upgrade.

Do not bring a Vault or insured blueprint you cannot afford to lose. Failed exfil costs anything not protected in a Secure Slot. A Basic Pack has eight slots; Medium backpacks add a Secure Slot that retains keys and manuals if you die. The exact protection described for that slot is keys and manuals, so do not assume an unextracted Commander ingredient survives a death.
Which Commander are you preparing to fight?
MW4 DMZ has three Commanders: Colossus, Deathstalker, and the North Korean battle tank. They always exist somewhere in the Hajin Exclusion Zone, appear on the Tac Map when nearby, and cannot be purchased as intel from the Boss Board. The Team Leader also warns when one is close, so use the callout and map marker to decide whether your supplies and exit plan are ready.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Colossus: sustained fire against an armored infantry target
Call of Duty Staff describes Colossus as: “A seven-foot tall, heavily armored soldier built for the conditions in Hajin, equipped with a Minigun firing depleted uranium rounds (above right).” His slow movement does not make him safe: community reports describe a large health pool and a persistent chase. Bring the LMG, preferably a 3-Plate if you own one, and avoid standing in the open while his minigun is firing.
Community tactics include using pillars or vehicles as cover, firing between minigun bursts, and using Thermite, C4, sustained LMG fire, or marksman headshots. Some players report that Colossus path-sticks on cars; treat that as a situational community observation, not a guaranteed safe spot. Drill Charges reportedly dealt less damage to him after the launch-patch tuning than during Early Access, so do not build the plan around them.
Military Composites are a reported typical ingredient drop. Activision has not published his health, armor values, or a specific ingredient guarantee. Colossus also appears as a story beat in Operation Fallen Ember, but that does not make the roaming Commander a predictable, buyable hunt.
Deathstalker: use the SAM site or bring high-caliber fire
Call of Duty Staff describes Deathstalker as: “There are four types of enemy drones active in Hajin. This is a helicopter-sized Autonomous drone adversary mounted with dual machinegun turrets.” The official counter is a captured SAM site: “Under your control, the battery automatically targets enemy aircraft, which is particularly useful against Deathstalkers.”

Capturing the site starts a siren and can provoke a local AI response. Defend the terminal, then remain near the captured site; if you leave, enemy forces can recapture it. If you cannot use a SAM, community advice favors high-caliber or armor-piercing fire, including an AP Type 73. Players also report a yellow hit-marker weak spot. Do not stand in the open beneath the turrets while you shoot.
After it is destroyed, the wreck reportedly splits into nose, body, and tail loot containers. Prototype RF Module is a reported typical ingredient. These drop descriptions are community reports; Activision has not published which ingredient each Commander drops or an ingredient drop rate.
Tank: bring a launcher, not a bullet-only plan
Call of Duty Staff describes the Tank as: “A North Korean battle tank on high alert, patrolling Hajin (above left).” Community guidance is blunt: “Bullets do nothing, and grenades barely scratch it, so bring a launcher.” A PILA or RPG-8 is the specialist choice. A recovered PILA is a realistic early option because it is listed as a day-one weapon; the LoadoutVault weapon table gives it 8 RPM and a one-round magazine.
One community solo test reported using about 25 rockets, but that is not an official health estimate or a fixed ammunition requirement. Carry multiple ammo supplies or fight near an Ammo Cache rather than treating the reported count as a guarantee. A Vendor Warhead killstreak in the Fire Support slot reportedly did most of the damage in seconds in one solo test; that is an anecdotal option, not a published damage figure.

Loot the Tank at the front, back, and top. Nanostructured Alloy is its reported typical ingredient and is used in 3-Plate Vest recipes. Activision has not published Tank health, armor values, exact ingredient assignment, or iconic-weapon drop rates.
Which gun is best for a Commander fight?
Use the Type 73 when you are building specifically for a Commander: the job is sustained damage against armored or vehicle-scale targets, while a second weapon handles players who crash the fight. Use the Han 86 when you need a broadly useful, recoverable gun for AI and Operators, or when you do not yet have a Type 73. These are different decisions: general DMZ popularity does not establish which gun is best against every Commander.

After the 28 October 2026 tuning pass, LoadoutVault’s 29 October synthesis of five independent lists ranked the Han 86 first on average for general DMZ. CODMunity’s 28 October list put the Han 86 Long Range build at a 34.5% pick share, followed by the VEL 46 at 13.1% and Hyeon Burst at 8.6%. WZStats marked the Han 86 nerfed and the M4, Kastov 762, and PPSh-41 buffed on 29 October. Those figures describe community loadout choices, not boss damage tests.
The Han 86’s listed base configuration is 740 RPM with a 30-round magazine. If it is your available weapon, a 60 Round Drum addresses reload frequency; a suppressor supports stealthier movement before committing to a fight. NoobFeed’s 28 October DMZ setup lists FSS IS300 muzzle, Hanbit RK8 406mm barrel, FSS Fireline Grip, 60 Round Drum, and SZ SRE-7, with PPSh-41 as a secondary. Its beginner pairing is M4 plus ISO Nightshade. These are DMZ examples, not a claim that every attachment is unlocked or ideal for a Commander.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMMOEXP’s 26 October budget guidance identifies the FSS IS300 at Han 86 weapon level 6 and 60 Round Drum at level 10. It reports each at about 16,000 DMZ Cash and both at about 36,000 Cash in a Gunsmith cart. Those are reported costs, not a reason to empty the replacement kit: if you only buy one upgrade, prioritize the suppressor for stealth routes or the drum if reloads are disrupting your fights. A recovered Han 86 unchanged is a valid budget route.
For the Commander-focused primary, community boss-farm guidance recommends Type 73 plus X-58 Nyx, smoke, Thermite, Munitions Box, and Armor Box. Another solo boss guide recommends Type 73 with suppressor, 100-round box, and armor-piercing ammunition when available, plus a marksman rifle for headshots. The Oris 8.6 is reported to flinch a boss on every headshot. Armor-piercing, a particular attachment combination, or a flinch effect is not an official guarantee for every target.
ISO Nightshade’s listed specification is 923 RPM and a 30-round magazine. It can fill the close-range role, as can PPSh-41 or X-58 Nyx. WZStats labels M4 plus PPSh-41 its Extreme Threat bucket and M4 its All Rounder, making those alternatives for players without Type 73 access. The broader DMZ weapon pool has 33 launch weapons, according to LoadoutVault compiling Activision launch data; that count does not mean all 33 suit a Commander engagement.
Which Traits help a solo Commander hunter?
Build Survivalist and Warfighter rather than copying Multiplayer perks. Activision’s three DMZ Trait trees are Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist; an Operator has 18 Trait Points, can put at most nine into one tree, and Traits are locked once picked unless you use Operator Prestige or dismiss that Operator. Some fan guides use different tree labels; the official names are Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist.

Survivalist 9: recovery and time to finish the fight
- Consumable Duration: extends the value of consumables, supporting a longer run.
- Free Revive: the solo build’s first-wound recovery option.
- Die Hard: reported to grant unlimited bleed-out and auto-call exfil while crawling. Some recaps call this trait Hardened; use the in-game trait label.
Faster Revive and Numb the Pain are teammate-pickup benefits and are weaker choices for a solo build. Every player gets one free tourniquet revive from Last Stand per match; returning Wounded lowers the health cap until a Medkit removes that state. A solo hunter should budget Medkits rather than assume the first revive restores full fighting capacity.
Warfighter 9: resilience, regeneration, and an extra chance
- Combat Resistance: reduces explosive and tactical damage, useful against grenades and explosive threats around a Commander.
- Quick Fix: shortens regeneration delay after a kill, helping when successive AI waves arrive.
- Possum: official wording says it “Allows a Self Revive into Last Stand from death, restoring health to maximum, once per match.” It is an extra recovery chance, not a reason to take a fight without plates or an exit.
Major Traits occupy the 3-, 6-, and 9-point milestones in either/or pairs; minor traits are random. The official explanation is that a single Operator can earn up to 18 Trait Points, and “Once you pick a Trait, it is locked in and can’t be substituted.” For a player already invested in Scout, Overwatch keeps UAV Towers the Operator activates from expiring, while Thermal Padding hides the Operator from UAVs. That combination helps rotate toward a roaming Commander or avoid a squad; it is less useful after a minigun fight has already started.
How do you prepare and extract on a solo Commander run?
Go only when you can afford to disengage. The important success condition is not merely dealing damage or securing a kill: Activision says the valuable 3D Printer Ingredients come from killing a Commander and extracting. The official recommendation is also to control the area and break contact if the fight becomes insurmountable.
- Gear at the FOB before deploying. Do not start on a Free Loadout or one plate. Bring a 2-Plate or better, Self-Revive Kit, two Medkits, an ammo supply, and parachute. Pack the Armor Box and Munitions Box if available. Mirae General Hospital and green Clinics are practical Medkit farms.
- Choose a weapon you can actually field. If Gunsmith is not unlocked, use a looted Type 73 or Han 86, or a recovered gun. DMZ Gunsmith unlocks at player level 10. The Vendor unlocks at level 5, and the 3D Printer at level 2. A base gun purchase requires extracting that gun’s Weapon Manual or using a looted or Vendor copy; Multiplayer weapon levels and attachment unlocks are shared, but that does not give you a Multiplayer class in DMZ.
- Set up a target-specific counter. For a Tank, bring a PILA or RPG-8 and enough ammunition to sustain the attempt. For Deathstalker, consider capturing a SAM site before committing; defend it and stay near it. For Colossus, favor sustained LMG fire, a 3-Plate if you have one, and cover that lets you shoot between bursts.
- Rotate with awareness. Use vehicles across open ground and watch their fuel. Crouch-walk near players because footsteps are loud. Activate a UAV Tower before committing if one is available; the Overwatch Trait can keep a tower you activate from expiring. Do not treat intel as protection from a close-range third party.
- Assess the approach before firing. When the Team Leader calls a Commander, check plates, ammunition, supplies, and the route to exfil. Clear nearby AI quietly if practical, but avoid farming extra kills in the same compound: too many AI kills fill the Hostiles Kill Count meter and can dispatch a Hunt Squad marked for death.
- Fight in controlled bursts and reposition. Use cover and target-specific damage rather than standing still and emptying magazines. Keep smoke or a movement route for breaking contact. Activision explicitly advises leaving if the engagement becomes insurmountable; preserving the Operator and kit can be better than losing both.
- Secure the ingredients, then leave. Put valuable keys and manuals in the Secure Slot; do not assume ingredients survive death. Avoid optional PvP after the kill and head for an exfil. A called exfil helicopter reportedly leaves after 30 seconds, and its flare is visible to nearby squads, so the pad itself may be contested. If it is camped, community solo guidance advises waiting for final exfil with gas masks on board.
- React to a Dog Tag Case separately. If you also picked up a Lieutenant’s Dog Tag Case, your position is broadcast. Activision says immediate exfil is critical. Do not confuse that Lieutenant objective with Commander rewards.
Hajin is large—Activision lists more than 60 named locations and LoadoutVault lists 13 major points of interest—but that is not a reason to search high-threat interiors without preparation. Chang-san Air Base bunker, The Grid, and the prison core are Extreme/Critical POIs where Commanders and stacked squads can overlap. Do not enter them just to force a Commander encounter when your kit cannot support it.

How are Commanders different from Lieutenants?
Commanders and Lieutenants are separate Boss Board categories, and their rewards and intel rules differ. The Boss Board unlocks after the second DMZ Order. Activision says players can buy intel for Lieutenants and receive free information about Commanders; Commander intel itself cannot be purchased.
| Category | How to locate | Distinct risk or reward |
|---|---|---|
| Commanders | Always present somewhere in the Exclusion Zone; marked on the Tac Map when close, with a Team Leader warning. | First kill of a specific Commander gives DMZ Cash; killing and extracting yields valuable 3D Printer Ingredients. No Dog Tag Case. |
| Lieutenants | Buy intel with DMZ Cash or climb a Lieutenant Hunt tower; purchased intel lasts one deployment. | Drop a Dog Tag Case that broadcasts the holder’s position, making immediate exfil important. |
Named Lieutenant hunts include Gorani, Bale, Jin-Tae, The Doctor, The Chemist, Iskra, Scavenger, Roze, Jang-Ui, and The Warden. Community launch-week reporting counted 13 bosses—10 Lieutenants and three Commanders—but Activision has not published an official Lieutenant count. The count should therefore be understood as community reporting, not an official roster total.

Community reporting puts a Lieutenant first-kill bounty at 10,000 DMZ Cash, Boss Board Lieutenant intel at 25,000, a first Commander kill at about 50,000, and an extracted Lieutenant Dog Tag Case at about 25,000 in the After Action Report. Activision has not published exact Commander first-kill Cash, so treat the Commander figure as a player-reported estimate, not a guaranteed payout. The kill’s first-time Cash reward is separate from the extraction requirement for Commander Ingredients.
Activision says players can expect additional “[CLASSIFIED]” rewards for slaying multiple Commanders. No details are published, so do not plan around a specific reward or drop. Likewise, Activision has not published Commander health, armor values, exact Ingredient assignments, or iconic-weapon drop rates.
What should you avoid on a solo boss run?
- Do not buy Commander intel. It is not available; watch for the proximity map marker and Team Leader warning instead.
- Do not copy a Multiplayer build wholesale. DMZ uses Trait trees rather than Ghost, Ninja, and Tracker Create-a-Class perks, and its loadout slots and progression differ.
- Do not start under-equipped. One plate, no self-revive, or a single small magazine leaves little margin for the boss, AI, and Operators.
- Do not assume a kill equals a completed objective. Ingredients are tied to extraction, and Activision does not say they survive a death.
- Do not farm AI while waiting for the boss. Extra AI kills can fill the Hostiles Kill Count and bring a Hunt Squad into an already noisy fight.
- Do not count community observations as guarantees. Rocket counts, Cash amounts, pathing quirks, typical Ingredients, and weapon effects are reported by players; official Commander health and drop-rate figures are not published.
- Do not risk a valuable blueprint you cannot replace. Active Duty Operators can return from MIA without gear, even though their Traits remain; recovery costs scale with Trait Points.
MW4 DMZ launched in Early Access on 20 October 2026 and reached full launch on 23 October 2026, according to Activision and LoadoutVault. The mode supports solo play: turn Squad Fill off on the Ready Up screen (L2/LT on controller or 1 on keyboard). Solo means no squadmates to revive or cover the exfil—not a solo-only or PvE-only lobby. Proximity chat and the ping wheel can support a truce or joining another squad, but neither removes the risk of a third party.
For the cleanest decision: take Type 73 and a close-range weapon for Colossus, prioritize a captured SAM or high-caliber fire for Deathstalker, and bring a launcher plus ammunition for the Tank. Across all three, protect your ability to survive, replenish, and leave; the ingredients become the meaningful reward only once you extract.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play MW4 DMZ solo?
Yes. Solo play is supported by turning Squad Fill off on the Ready Up screen: use L2/LT on a controller or 1 on a keyboard. DMZ is not a solo-only or PvE-only mode, so other Operators may still encounter you.
How many Active Duty Operators can I keep?
The default is two Active Duty slots, with a third available at DMZ player level 15. The Vault Edition starts with three slots instead of two, according to Activision.
