Current launch guidance reports up to 60 players across as many as 20 squads in an MW4 DMZ match. A normal deployment squad has up to three Operators, and you can enter alone, with one friend, or as a trio. The 60-player figure is reported launch guidance rather than a hard cap published on Activision’s public DMZ page; DMZMap says the exact match-wide population was not confirmed. Treat the number, matchmaking behavior, and squad rules as subject to change after patches.
How many players are in an MW4 DMZ match?
DMZTracker’s current guide, last checked against Early Access on October 20, 2026, reports a ceiling of 60 players in 20 squads. GamesRadar+ also describes 20 squads dropping onto the map. Because Activision has not published a definitive match-cap specification on its public mode page and DMZMap recorded the total as unconfirmed, the safest reading is “up to 60 players in up to 20 squads” for launch planning, not a guaranteed lobby count every match.

What the reported numbers mean
| Rule or figure | Current guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Reported match population | Up to 60 players | DMZTracker launch guidance; exact cap not confirmed by DMZMap or Activision’s public page |
| Reported squad count | Up to 20 squads | Reported by DMZTracker and GamesRadar+ for launch coverage |
| Starting squad size | One to three players | Solo, duo, and trio deployments are supported |
| Largest group during a match | Four players | Infinity Ward says assimilation is capped at four total players |
How big is an MW4 DMZ squad?
You begin with a maximum of three Operators in your squad. That can be one player, two players, or a full trio. During a deployment, assimilation can increase a group to four total players, which is the largest in-match team allowed by the developer’s stated rule.

A four-player group is therefore not a fourth-person starting queue. It is created during the run through assimilation, and the cap applies to the combined group after players join.
Can I play MW4 DMZ solo?
Yes. Solo deployment is supported, and you can prevent random teammates from being added by turning Squad Fill off before matchmaking. Solo play gives you complete control over movement and extraction timing, but every fight, revive, objective interaction, and equipment decision is yours alone.

- Return to the Forward Operating Base and prepare your Operator and equipment.
- Choose a deployment activity: Story Mission, Dynamic Operation, Side Op, or Free Roam.
- At the Ready Up screen, set Squad Fill: Off.
- Start matchmaking and verify the setting again before your next deployment if you want to remain solo.
Squad Fill controls your own team size; it does not create a private match, remove rival Operators, or guarantee that other players are alone. You can still encounter a duo, trio, or a four-player group formed through assimilation.

Is there a solo-only queue in MW4 DMZ?
No protected solo-only queue is guaranteed. The Infinity Ward DMZ team says matchmaking is built with the direction of putting solos with solos, duos with duos, and trios with trios, but explicitly adds that there is no guarantee. A solo Operator can therefore face a larger team, even when Squad Fill is off.
Plan around the possibility of an uneven engagement: listen for multiple sets of footsteps, avoid committing to a prolonged fight without cover, and leave when the route to extraction becomes more dangerous than the remaining reward.
What is the DMZ risk-and-reward loop?
DMZ is a PvPvE extraction mode on Hajin. You can pursue Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, high-value targets, or free exploration while dealing with hostile AI and rival Operators. Activision describes the choice as moving covertly, fighting hostile factions, or hunting opposing players.

Successful extraction carries recovered gear and resources into future deployments, helping you prepare for later runs. If you stay too long, push beyond a safe route, or fail to extract, the equipment and materials collected during that deployment can be lost.
Choose an exit condition before you deploy
- Objective secured: leave once the mission-critical task is complete.
- Supplies low: extract before ammunition, armor, medical items, or other essentials run out.
- Route contested: break contact if another squad controls the approach to extraction.
- Reward no longer justifies risk: stop extending the run when the next objective could cost your insured or recovered kit.
Should I enter solo, as a duo, or as a trio?
The best choice depends on whether you value independence or recovery power. More teammates add weapons, shared awareness, and additional opportunities for revives, while solo play removes coordination overhead and makes stealth routes easier to manage.
| Entry | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Full control, quieter movement, no random teammate decisions | No teammate revive or covering fire; larger groups remain a threat |
| Duo | One partner for crossfire, revives, and carrying objectives | Still outnumbered by trios or assimilated groups |
| Trio | Maximum starting firepower and task coverage | More noise, more equipment to protect, and greater exposure |
For a first solo run, choose one objective that does not require simultaneous coverage of multiple angles. Extract as soon as that objective and a reasonable supply buffer are secured; deeper exploration is optional, not mandatory.

Will solo players face full squads?
They can. Similar-size matchmaking is an aim rather than a promise, and assimilation can create a four-player group after deployment. Treat every unexplored building, vehicle route, and extraction zone as potentially occupied by a larger team.
What should I remember before an MW4 DMZ deployment?
- Use “up to 60 players in up to 20 squads” as current launch guidance, not an immutable publisher specification.
- Starting squads contain up to three players; assimilation raises the maximum group to four.
- Turn Squad Fill off to deploy alone, then recheck it before later matches.
- There is no guaranteed solo-only lobby.
- Extraction preserves recovered resources; a failed run can forfeit them.
- Recheck the rules after patches because population and matchmaking are changeable systems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning Squad Fill off stop other players from joining my squad?
It prevents random teammates from being placed on your starting team. It does not prevent encounters with rival Operators or a later assimilation that creates a larger enemy group.
Can I start an MW4 DMZ match with four friends?
No. The documented starting structure is a maximum of three players. Four-player groups can form only after assimilation during the deployment.

What activities can I choose in DMZ?
Deployments can focus on Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, high-value targets, or Free Roam. The choice determines whether your run is centered on a specific objective or open exploration.
What happens to gear when I extract?
Recovered gear and resources carry into future deployments after a successful extraction. Failing to get out can cost the equipment and materials collected during that run.
