MW4 DMZ failures do not all have the same cause. Check Activision and your platform’s service status first, then identify whether the symptom is a crash, a network disconnect, a freeze, or an extraction that completed without credit. Run the platform connection test and a wired Ethernet check before changing router settings. Console players should test UPnP, then port forwarding with a static IP, and only then use a temporary DMZ test. PC players with a desktop crash should follow Activision’s crash-report workflow instead of treating the problem as a router fault. There is no published, universal method that restores loot after every failed extraction, so document the incident and use the current known-issues and reporting channels.
What should I check before changing my router?
Check the service status page before touching local settings. Activision’s connection guidance says a platform indicator that is not green, or an active alert, can cause connection problems. If the service is degraded, router changes cannot repair the platform or game service; wait for restoration and retest.

A notice affecting matchmaking, authentication, or a particular mode is more useful evidence than a generic list of internet tweaks.
- Service indicator is not green or an alert is active: stop local troubleshooting and try again after the incident is cleared.
- Service is operational: continue with the symptom-specific checks below.
- Only MW4 DMZ is affected: investigate the game, mode, and platform path before assuming your whole connection is failing.
- Several online games fail: include the console or PC network test results when you contact your internet provider or platform support.
Which MW4 DMZ symptom are you actually seeing?
Use the exact failure mode to choose the right branch. A loss of connection during exfiltration is not the same event as a crash to desktop, and a mode bug is not proven by a NAT change that happens to coincide with a later successful match.

| Observed symptom | Most useful first branch | What the step can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Game closes to desktop | PC or console crash/freezes support path | Separates a software, graphics, or hardware-style failure from a network drop |
| Screen or console hard-locks | Crash/freezes workflow; capture the time and error state | Shows that the session ended locally rather than proving a server outage |
| Returned to menu with a lost-host or server message | Service check, platform network test, then local connection checks | Tests whether the session lost its network path |
| Disconnected during helicopter extraction | Network and service branches, followed by incident reporting | Identifies a possible disconnect; it does not prove the router caused it |
| Run appears complete but extraction is not credited | Known-issues page and support report | Looks for a mode or progression issue rather than treating it as ordinary Wi-Fi loss |
Before restarting, write down the platform, game build, exact error text, UTC time, map or location, squad state, and whether other online games were affected. These details let support correlate your report with service incidents or a tracked bug.
How do I run the safest network checks?
Start with reversible checks that do not alter router security or addressing. Activision recommends wired Ethernet for online play. Its support guide says, “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay,” and that “A wired connection will allow your system to achieve optimal performance for online gameplay.”
- Stop competing traffic. Pause downloads, video streams, cloud synchronization, game updates, and other bandwidth-heavy activity on the network. Do not assume a speed-test result represents the connection while several devices are busy.
- Restart the router and modem or gateway. Power them off, wait for the normal restart interval specified by the manufacturer, and let the internet connection return before launching MW4.
- Run the built-in platform network test. Use the network-test menu on your PlayStation, Xbox, or Windows network settings and note any NAT, sign-in, packet-loss, or connectivity warning exactly as shown.
- Test one wired session. Connect the gaming device directly to the router with Ethernet. A Cat 6 cable is a practical diagnostic accessory when you do not already have a suitable cable; it is not a guaranteed crash fix.
- Compare like-for-like sessions. Use the same mode and, if possible, similar play conditions. If the problem disappears over Ethernet, Wi-Fi instability is a plausible contributor. That result does not prove every MW4 crash is network-related and does not rule out a simultaneous server or game bug.
Keep the result of each check. “It worked once” is weaker evidence than a short record showing whether several consecutive deployments fail on Wi-Fi but not on Ethernet, or fail identically on both.
What router settings should console players change, and in what order?
Use Activision’s staged sequence rather than enabling every networking feature at once. Change one method, test MW4, and return to the previous state before trying the next. The sequence is for consoles; it is not a general prescription for PC crashes.
1. Test UPnP first
Turn off manual port forwarding rules for the console and enable UPnP on the router. Restart the router if its interface requires that for the setting to apply, then test MW4. UPnP lets the console request the ports it needs without you maintaining a fixed rule set, but the result depends on the router and network topology.

2. Test port forwarding with a static IP
If UPnP does not resolve the connection symptom, disable UPnP. Assign the console a static local IP address, then create the port-forwarding rules required by Activision’s current connection instructions for your platform. Test again after confirming that the rules point to the correct device. A static address matters because forwarding to an address that later changes sends traffic to the wrong device.
3. Use a temporary console DMZ test only as a later diagnostic
If the issue remains, turn off port forwarding and place the console’s static IP in the router’s DMZ for a controlled test. This can help identify whether the router’s filtering or forwarding configuration is involved; it does not demonstrate that DMZ is a permanent fix, and it does not repair a server-side or game-code fault.
4. Remove the DMZ assignment after testing
When the test is finished, remove the static IP from the router’s DMZ and restore the safer configuration you intend to use. Activision Support explicitly states: “Once you have tested DMZ, be sure to remove your Static IP address from your router’s DMZ.” Leaving a console exposed in DMZ is not a recommended permanent security setting.
If none of the three router stages changes the symptom, stop cycling through settings. Repeated changes make it harder to identify the cause and can create overlapping rules, double-NAT confusion, or an accidental loss of the original configuration.
What should PC players do when MW4 crashes or freezes?
A desktop crash, graphics-style error, or hard freeze needs the crash-specific branch. Activision maintains a dedicated crashes-and-freezes support route and a PC crash-report path. Use those resources when the program closes or locks rather than treating an Ethernet cable or router reset as a repair for confirmed game-code, driver, or hardware faults.

- Record whether MW4 closed to Windows, stopped responding, rebooted the PC, or displayed a graphics or driver message.
- Save the exact error text, UTC time, map, activity, squad state, and whether the failure repeats at the same point.
- Submit Activision’s PC crash report when the support flow requests it, including the requested system and crash details.
- Keep the network branch separate: a wired test can investigate a concurrent disconnect, but it cannot establish that a local network caused a desktop crash.
Do not use registry cleaners or unrelated “optimization” utilities as a substitute for the official crash workflow. They can change system state without addressing the underlying fault, and there is no evidence here that they recover a DMZ inventory lost in a crash.
Why can an extraction fail, and can lost DMZ loot be recovered?
DMZ is an extraction mode: you deploy, pursue rewards, and return to the Forward Operating Base after extraction. A disconnect or crash during that loop can therefore affect progression or inventory, but the available official material does not establish a universal recovery process for every lost deployment.
First classify what happened. A service outage can end a session for many players; an unstable local connection can remove one player; a game crash can terminate the client; and a mode-specific bug can fail to credit an otherwise completed extraction. The same missing loot screen can follow several different causes.
What to do immediately
- Do not assume that reconnecting, reinstalling, or changing NAT settings will restore the lost items.
- Check the current Activision known-issues page for a matching progression, extraction, or inventory issue.
- Record the deployment details: platform, build, map, squad, approximate UTC time, extraction location, objective state, and the exact point at which the session ended.
- Report the incident through the official support channel and include the service-status result and network-test observations.
A successful later deployment does not prove that the earlier loss was fixed; it only shows that the later session completed. Likewise, a failed Ethernet test does not prove the router caused a missing inventory record. Treat recovery as possible only when an official notice describes a restoration or grant process for the specific issue.

How should I interpret the current known-issues list?
The known-issues page is the best place to distinguish a tracked MW4 problem from a generic player workaround. Read the status label and the scope of each entry rather than applying its steps to every crash or disconnect.

Activision’s current list includes a specific DMZ progression issue involving advancement through the Information Power Order. It also gives a workaround for a separate operator-prestige issue involving rare weapons with three attachment slots. Those entries are narrow; they are not evidence that all failed extractions share one cause.
Use four evidence labels in your notes:
- Officially listed as fixed: Activision has changed the entry to indicate a fix. Retest after the relevant update, but keep the original incident details if the symptom returns.
- Under investigation: Activision acknowledges the issue is being examined. Local router changes are unlikely to resolve a server or game defect.
- Reported by players: A symptom has been described by the community, but it has not been established as a universal cause.
- Untested workaround: A suggested step lacks a verified result from the publication or source presenting it. Use caution, back up settings, and prefer reversible actions.
A secondary report reviewed 129 posts from DMZ Codex in 2026. That is a limited sample of reports, not a crash rate or prevalence estimate for all MW4 players. It can show that a symptom has been discussed, but it cannot establish how common it is or guarantee that a proposed workaround works.
Which troubleshooting step fits each failure?
| Step | Best symptom match | Evidence level | Risk and reversibility | What it can prove |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Service-status check | Widespread disconnects, sign-in failures, matchmaking errors | Official service information | Lowest risk; no configuration change | Whether an active platform or service incident may explain the timing |
| Platform network test | Lost-host messages and repeated network drops | Platform diagnostic | Low risk | Whether the device reports a local connectivity or NAT warning |
| Router restart and traffic pause | Intermittent connection instability | Standard local check | Low risk; temporary interruption for every device | Whether a transient gateway state or congestion was involved |
| Wired Ethernet comparison | Wi-Fi-only disconnects or variable latency | Activision recommendation | Low risk; requires a cable and a temporary physical connection | Whether wireless instability is a plausible contributor |
| UPnP | Console NAT or session-establishment problems | Activision connection sequence | Reversible router change | Whether automatic port mapping works better on that network |
| Port forwarding plus static IP | Persistent console connection problems after UPnP | Activision connection sequence | Reversible but configuration-sensitive | Whether explicit forwarding to the correct console address changes the symptom |
| Temporary console DMZ | Last-stage router diagnostic | Activision connection sequence | Higher exposure; must be removed afterward | Whether router filtering may be involved, not whether the game or service is healthy |
| Crash report | PC close-to-desktop, freeze, or graphics-style failure | Official crash workflow | Low configuration risk | Details Activision can use to investigate a client-side failure |
What common troubleshooting mistakes make MW4 problems harder to diagnose?
- Changing the router before checking service status: this creates local variables during a possible platform outage.
- Calling every failure a “crash”: a menu return with a server message needs a network branch, while a desktop close needs a crash branch.
- Enabling UPnP, forwarding, and DMZ together: overlapping methods prevent a clean comparison and can leave unintended exposure.
- Leaving the console in DMZ: Activision’s own guidance says to remove the static address from DMZ after the test.
- Using a wired result as proof of a universal fix: Ethernet can isolate a likely Wi-Fi contribution, but it cannot repair or disprove a server-side bug.
- Treating community reports as confirmed causes: label them as player-reported or untested unless an official page confirms the issue.
- Promising loot recovery: no evidence supports an automatic restoration process for every crash or disconnect.
- Failing to record UTC time and exact wording: vague reports are difficult to match with an incident or known issue.
What is the shortest decision path?
Use this order when you need a repeatable routine:
- Check Activision and platform service status.
- Classify the symptom as crash, freeze, network disconnect, or uncredited extraction.
- Run the platform network test and pause competing traffic.
- Restart the router and compare one wired Ethernet session.
- For a console connection problem, test UPnP, then static-IP port forwarding, then a temporary DMZ diagnostic; undo each previous method before moving on.
- For a PC crash or freeze, use Activision’s crash support and PC crash report instead of escalating router changes.
- For lost extraction rewards, check known issues, preserve incident details, and report the event without promising recovery.
This sequence keeps low-risk checks first, matches the action to the symptom, and makes clear what each result can—and cannot—demonstrate.

Does a strict NAT type always cause MW4 DMZ crashes?
No. NAT information can help explain session-establishment problems, but a crash to desktop, a service outage, or a mode-specific progression bug can occur independently of NAT. Treat NAT as one diagnostic signal rather than a universal explanation.
Should I keep UPnP enabled after a DMZ test?
Choose one router method and keep the configuration you can manage reliably. After a DMZ test, remove the console’s static address from DMZ; do not leave multiple forwarding methods enabled simply because they were used during troubleshooting.

Can Activision restore items lost during a failed exfiltration?
Only an official incident-specific process can establish that. Current evidence does not support promising restoration after every crash or disconnect, so include the deployment record in a support report and watch the known-issues page for a matching notice.
How long should I test Ethernet before deciding Wi-Fi is involved?
Use several comparable deployments rather than one lucky session. A repeatable difference between Wi-Fi and a direct wired connection makes wireless instability plausible, but it still does not prove that every MW4 failure has the same cause.
What information is most useful in a crash report?
Provide the platform, game build, UTC timestamp, map or activity, squad state, exact error text, and whether the program closed, froze, or returned to a menu. Include the platform network-test result and service-status observation when the event also looked like a disconnect.
