There is no evidence-backed PC parts list that guarantees smooth play through all of Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo lists the game for Switch platforms, not Windows, while several unrelated fan-made Windows recompilations have different requirements. Choose the specific project and the exact game-file version first; only then can you check whether your CPU, GPU, memory and storage qualify.

For TotK Recomp v0.1.1, the documented baseline is an AVX2 x86-64 processor, a Vulkan 1.3 GPU exposing VK_EXT_external_memory_host, at least 4 GB of VRAM, 16 GB of system RAM and 36 GB free during setup. UltraTears has a narrower developer report: an RTX 3060 reached the game’s roughly 30-fps rate in its opening areas, with shader-related drops. Neither fact is a promise of a sustained 60 fps across Hyrule.

These are separate projects, not interchangeable editions. Their graphics extensions, accepted game versions, storage accounting and maturity differ. The project documentation is the authority for a particular release: TotK Recomp releases, UltraTears and SkyboundTOTK.

Is there an official Windows version of Tears of the Kingdom?

No. Nintendo’s cited product listing is for Switch hardware, not a Windows edition: Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom listing. The projects above are unofficial native Windows recompilations. They do not contain Nintendo game data and require files obtained from the player’s own legally owned copy.

A Switch cartridge is not a ready-made Windows download, and owning one does not ensure that its dump matches the version a project expects. Nintendo also lists a separate Switch 2 Edition with improved console visuals and performance; that cartridge remains console software rather than a PC port: Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition listing.

Which project should you match to your hardware and game files?

TotK Recomp v0.1.1

TotK Recomp accepts a player’s own base game with update 1.2.1 or 1.4.3 and builds the native executable locally. Its installer prepares shaders during setup, so the temporary disk requirement is larger than the final installed footprint. The project exposes a 60-fps default setting, experimental higher limits, resolution choices, FSR 1 and an F10 performance overlay, but those options are features rather than proof of a stable frame rate.

The project README describes the software as “Early development. The game is playable on Windows; visual bugs and crashes are still expected.” Treat the listed CPU, Vulkan extension, VRAM, RAM and storage values as launch requirements, not as a full-playthrough certification. Read the current release notes before downloading because support can change between builds: TotK Recomp’s current release page.

UltraTears 0.1.0-beta

UltraTears expects an already extracted version 1.4.3 consisting of exefs and romfs; encrypted packages are not directly accepted. Its stated Windows baseline uses an AVX2 processor and a Vulkan 1.3 GPU exposing VK_EXT_shader_object. That extension is different from TotK Recomp’s required VK_EXT_external_memory_host, so “supports Vulkan” alone is not enough.

The only named hardware-and-frame-rate report identified for these projects comes from the UltraTears developer. On Windows 10 with a 16-thread Ryzen processor and a GeForce RTX 3060, the opening areas reached approximately 30 fps, with drops when newly encountered shaders had to compile. The report covers the prologue and Great Sky Island, not a completed playthrough, other graphics cards or a sustained 60-fps target. UltraTears also states that Steam Deck and Linux are not yet supported by its current Windows build.

SkyboundTOTK

SkyboundTOTK uses the unmodified base game version 1.0.0, not the updates expected by the other projects. Its documentation requires a GPU and driver supported by wgpu-native and at least 45 GB of free space in addition to the original game dump. The build is CPU- and memory-intensive and requires separately installed development tools, but the README does not establish a particular smooth-play CPU, VRAM or system-RAM threshold.

First visits can stutter while shaders and pipelines compile. Its experimental image interpolation can add displayed frames, but it does not make the game simulate frames faster or reduce input latency. A higher displayed count therefore must not be treated as native game performance.

What does “smoothly” mean for these ports?

Three different outcomes are often conflated:

  • Launch compatibility: the executable starts, recognizes the GPU and loads the selected game files.
  • Sustained frame rate: the game maintains a target such as 30 or 60 fps during a defined route.
  • Frame-time consistency: input and camera motion remain even, without shader-compilation spikes or traversal stutter.

The documentation establishes some launch requirements and limited observations, not a reproducible, cross-hardware 60-fps result for the whole game. TotK Recomp’s 60-fps setting is not a benchmark. UltraTears’ RTX 3060 observation is a project-specific report in early areas. SkyboundTOTK explicitly warns about first-visit stutter. A PC can therefore be compatible while still showing crashes, visual defects or uneven frame pacing.

Which PC components should you check first?

CPU: verify AVX2, not just core count

TotK Recomp and UltraTears list AVX2 as a requirement. Check your processor’s instruction-set support in its official specifications or a trusted system-information utility before considering a GPU purchase. A high core count does not substitute for AVX2, and SkyboundTOTK’s documentation does not provide a comparable threshold.

GPU and driver: identify the exact Vulkan extension

For TotK Recomp, the GPU must expose Vulkan 1.3 and VK_EXT_external_memory_host. UltraTears instead calls for Vulkan 1.3 and VK_EXT_shader_object. Verify the extension on the installed driver for the exact card; a generic Vulkan-capable label cannot confirm either requirement. SkyboundTOTK uses the wgpu-native support matrix rather than one named Vulkan extension.

Memory and VRAM

TotK Recomp documents 16 GB of system RAM and 4 GB of VRAM. UltraTears documents 16 GB of system RAM but does not establish a universal VRAM floor in the cited requirements. SkyboundTOTK gives no specific smooth-play RAM or VRAM number. Meeting 16 GB should be treated as eligibility for the projects that state it, not as evidence that shader compilation, bugs or frame pacing will be solved.

Storage: distinguish temporary build space from the final install

TotK Recomp needs 36 GB free during setup and reports about 20 GB afterward. UltraTears separates roughly 32 GB for build output from roughly 16 GB for the original game dump. SkyboundTOTK asks for at least 45 GB beyond the original dump. Do not add these figures across projects or assume that an SSD cures software defects; the important check is whether the selected build can complete its own local conversion with room for temporary files.

How should you choose hardware before buying anything?

  1. Select the project and release. Decide whether your files are compatible with TotK Recomp’s 1.2.1/1.4.3 inputs, UltraTears’ extracted 1.4.3 folders or SkyboundTOTK’s base 1.0.0 input.
  2. Check the processor. Confirm AVX2 if the chosen project lists it.
  3. Check the graphics extension. Use the project’s named Vulkan extension or wgpu-native requirement, together with a current driver, rather than relying on the GPU model name.
  4. Reserve build storage. Measure free space against the project’s temporary and original-file requirements at the same time.
  5. Run the existing system before upgrading. Use the project’s documented settings and performance overlay where available. This tells you whether your current bottleneck is compilation stutter, frame pacing or a hard compatibility failure.
  6. Only then consider a component change. No cited evidence shows that additional RAM, an SSD or a more expensive GPU fixes unfinished-port crashes, visual bugs or first-visit shader stutter.

What settings and behavior should you expect after installation?

Shader preparation is part of the experience rather than a one-time guarantee. TotK Recomp prepares shaders during setup; UltraTears reports drops when new shader work appears; SkyboundTOTK warns about compilation on first encounters. Allow the build or first area to complete its documented preparation, then watch frame-time behavior rather than relying only on an in-game frame counter.

For TotK Recomp, the F10 overlay can help distinguish a rendering-rate problem from a crash or compilation spike. Resolution controls and FSR 1 can reduce rendering load, but they do not change the project’s CPU simulation work or repair unsupported graphics features. SkyboundTOTK’s interpolation option should likewise be judged separately from native simulation rate and input response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controls are another compatibility layer. The projects are local Windows applications, so plan to use a Windows-compatible controller or keyboard mapping that your selected build recognizes. If input works but graphics fail, re-check the required extension and driver; if the build rejects the files, re-check the exact update or base version before changing hardware.

Can an RTX 3060 run the native TotK port?

An RTX 3060 is the named card in UltraTears’ limited developer report, where the opening areas reached approximately 30 fps with drops during newly encountered shader work. That makes it evidence that one UltraTears setup can run those scenes, not a universal minimum, a stable-60 recommendation or proof for TotK Recomp and SkyboundTOTK. The result also does not establish performance at every resolution or across the full game.

Is a console the more predictable option?

If your priority is a supported, finished product rather than an experimental Windows recompilation, Nintendo’s Switch listings are the established route. The Switch 2 Edition is a separate console release with Nintendo-described visual and performance improvements. It does not answer the PC-hardware question, but it avoids mixing unofficial build requirements, extracted-file versions and changing driver extensions.

How we picked the requirements

The comparison uses only the maintained project documentation and the one developer performance report identified for these builds. It separates launch requirements from observed frame rate, keeps each project’s game-file version and graphics extension distinct, and does not turn a configurable 60-fps option or an interpolated display rate into a sustained-play claim. Because the projects are early and changing, recheck release notes, bug reports, supported platforms and extension requirements immediately before installation.

Frequently asked questions

Does owning the Switch cartridge give me the files needed by a PC recompilation?

No. The projects require the player to create or supply their own extracted game data, and each one accepts a particular version or folder format. A cartridge is proof of a game purchase, not a Windows installer or a guarantee that its files match the selected release.

Can I use UltraTears on Linux or a Steam Deck?

UltraTears’ current documentation says Steam Deck and Linux are not yet supported. Do not infer support from the fact that the underlying hardware can run Vulkan; the project’s platform and driver status are separate requirements.

Will adding more than 16 GB of RAM guarantee fewer stutters?

No. The 16 GB figure is a stated baseline for projects that list it, while shader compilation and unfinished software can still cause pauses. No cited result demonstrates that a larger memory kit removes those project-level problems.

Is a displayed 60 fps from interpolation the same as 60-fps gameplay?

No. SkyboundTOTK’s interpolation can create additional displayed frames without increasing the rate at which the game simulates frames or lowering input latency. Judge native frame pacing and responsiveness separately from the number shown by a display counter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I recheck compatibility?

Check the selected project’s release page, extension requirements, supported game version and bug reports immediately before building, and again after a major update. These projects are in early development, so a previously compatible driver or input format may not remain the current recommendation.
