How the hack changes two-player play

Power-ups remain limited
Hackaday’s account says level power-ups were not doubled. Players therefore should not expect a separate copy of every power-up for each character.
One death affects both players
If either player dies, both players restart at the last checkpoint. That shared consequence makes coordination matter: one player’s mistake can cost the other progress too.

What the patch requires
The 2018 report describes the hack as an XDelta patch applied to a Super Mario Bros. ROM image, using a utility such as xdelta UI. It mentions dumping an image from a cartridge you own or extracting one from a Virtual Console download as possible ways to obtain a ROM image, and advises backing up the image before patching.
